Rectangular constrained Willmore minimizers and the Willmore conjecture

We show that the well-known family of $2$-lobed Delaunay tori $\;f^b\;$ in $\;S^3,\;$ parametrized by $\;b \in \mathbb R_{\geq1},\;$ uniquely minimizes the Willmore energy among all immersions from tori into $3$-space of conformal class $\;(a, b)\;$. As a corollary we obtain an alternate proof of the Willmore conjecture in $3$-space. This new strategy can be generalized to arbitrary codimensions provided a classification of isothermic constrained Willmore tori is possible and all $\;f^b\;$ remain stable in all codimensions.

The resonant boundary $Q$-curvature problem and boundary-weighted barycenters

Given a compact four-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary, we study the problem of existence of Riemannian metrics on $M$ conformal to $g$ with prescribed $Q$-curvature in the interior $\mathring{M}$ of $M$, and zero $T$-curvature and mean curvature on the boundary $\partial M$ of $M$. This geometric problem is equivalent to solving a fourth-order elliptic boundary value problem (BVP) involving the Paneitz operator with boundary conditions of Chang-Qing and Neumann operators. The corresponding BVP has a variational formulation but the corresponding variational problem, in the case under study, is not compact. To overcome such a difficulty we perform a systematic study, à la Bahri, of the so called {\it critical points at infinity}, compute their Morse indices, determine their contribution to the difference of topology between the sublevel sets of associated Euler-Lagrange functional and hence extend the full Morse Theory to this noncompact variational problem. To establish Morse inequalities we were led to investigate from the topological viewpoint the space of boundary-weighted barycenters of the underlying manifold, which arise in the description of the topology of very negative sublevel sets of the related functional. As an application of our approach we derive various existence results and provide a Poincaré-Hopf type criterium for the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem on compact four dimensional Riemannian manifolds with boundary.

Proof of the remaining cases of the Yamabe boundary problem

In this paper, we solve the remaining cases of the boundary Yamabe problem introduced by Escobar in 1992. Indeed, using the bubbles of Brendle-Chen, which are an adaptation to manifolds with boundary of the original ones introduced by Brendle for the study of the Yamabe flow on closed Riemannian manifolds of dimension greater or equal to 6, and the algebraic topological argument of Bahri-Coron, we solve the cases left open after the work of Brendle-Chen. Thus combining our work with the ones of Brendle-Chen and Escobar, we have that the boundary Yamabe problem is a done deal.

Barycenter technique and the Riemann mapping problem of Escobar

We solve the remaining cases of the Riemann mapping problem of Escobar. Indeed, performing a suitable scheme of the barycenter technique of Bahri-Coron via the Chen's bubbles, we solve the cases left open after the work of Chen. Thus, combining our work with the ones of Almaraz, Chen, Escobar and Marques we have that every compact Riemannian manifold with boundary of dimension greater or equal than 3 carries a conformal scalar flat metric with constant mean curvature.

Morse theory and the resonant Q-curvature problem

In this paper, we study the prescribed $Q$-curvature problem on closed four-dimensional Riemannian manifolds when the total integral of the $Q$-curvature is a positive integer multiple of the one of the four-dimensional round sphere. This problem has a variational structure with a lack of compactness. Using some topological tools of the theory of "critical points at infinity" combined with a refined blow-up analysis and some dynamical arguments, we identify the accumulations points of all noncompact flow lines of a pseudogradient flow, the so called critical points at infinity of the associated variational problem, and associate to them a natural Morse index. We then prove strong Morse type inequalities, extending the full Morse theory to this noncompact variational problem. Finally, we derive from our results Poincaré-Hopf index type criteria for existence, extending known results in the literature and deriving new ones.

Integral pinching results for manifolds with boundary

We prove that some Riemannian manifolds with boundary under an explicit integral pinching are spherical space forms. Precisely, we show that 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary, positive scalar curvature and an explicit integral pinching between the $L^2$-norm of their scalar curvature and the $L^2$-norm of their Ricci tensor are spherical space forms with totally geodesic boundary. Moreover, we prove also that 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with umbilic boundary, positive Yamabe invariant and an explicit integral pinching between the total integral of their $(Q,T)$-curvature and the $L^2$-norm of their Weyl curvature are spherical space forms with totally geodesic boundary. As a consequence of our work, we show that a certain conformally invariant operator which plays an important role in Conformal Geometry has a trivial kernel and is non-negative if the Yamabe invariant is positive and verifies a pinching condition together with the total integral of the $(Q,T)$-curvature. As an application of the latter spectral analysis, we show the existence of conformal metrics with constant $Q$-curvature, constant $T$-curvature, and zero mean curvature under the latter assumptions.

Curvature flows on four manifolds with boundary

Given a compact four dimensional smooth Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with smooth boundary, we consider the evolution equation by $Q$-curvature in the interior keeping the $T$-curvature and the mean curvature to be zero and the evolution equation by $T$-curvature at the boundary with the condition that the $Q$-curvature and the mean curvature vanish. Using integral method, we prove global existence and convergence for the $Q$-curvature flow (resp $T$-curvature flow) to smooth metric of prescribed $Q$-curvature (resp $T$-curvature) under conformally invariant assumptions.

Constant T-curvature conformal metrics on 4-manifolds with boundary

In this paper we prove that, given a compact four dimensional smooth Riemannian manifold (M,g) with smooth boundary there exists a metric conformal to g with constant T-curvature, zero Q-curvature and zero mean curvature under generic and conformally invariant assumptions. The problem amounts to solving a fourth order nonlinear elliptic boundary value problem (BVP) with boundary conditions given by a third-order pseudodifferential operator, and homogeneous Neumann one. It has a variational structure, but since the corresponding Euler-Lagrange functional is in general unbounded from below, we look for saddle points. In order to do this, we use topological arguments and min-max methods combined with a compactness result for the corresponding BVP.

Existence results for mean field equations with turbulence

In this paper we consider the following form of the so-called Mean field equation arising from the statistical mechanics description of two dimensional turbulence \begin{equation}\label{eq:study} - \D_g u = ρ_1 (\frac{e^{u}}{\int_\Sig e^{u} dV_g}-1)-ρ_2 (\frac{e^{-u}}{\int_\Sig e^{-u} dV_g} - 1) \end{equation} on a given closed orientable Riemannian surface ($Σ, g$) with volume 1, where $ρ_1, ρ_2$ are real parameters. Exploiting the variational structure of the problem and running a min-max scheme introduced by Djadli and Malchiodi, we prove that if $k$ is a positive integer, $ρ_1$ and $ρ_2$ two real numbers such that $ρ_1\in (8kπ, 8(k+1)π)$ and $ρ_2<4π$ then $\eqref{eq:study}$ is solvable.
