Data Management in Time-Domain Astronomy: Requirements and Challenges

In time-domain astronomy, we need to use the relational database to manage star catalog data. With the development of sky survey technology, the size of star catalog data is larger, and the speed of data generation is faster. So, in this paper, we make a systematic and comprehensive introduction to process the data in time-domain astronomy, and valuable research questions are detailed. Then, we list candidate systems usually used in astronomy and point out the advantages and disadvantages of these systems. In addition, we present the key techniques needed to deal with astronomical data. Finally, we summarize the challenges faced by the design of our database prototype.

AstroServ: Distributed Database for Serving Large-Scale Full Life-Cycle Astronomical Data

In time-domain astronomy, STLF (Short-Timescale and Large Field-of-view) sky survey is the latest way of sky observation. Compared to traditional sky survey who can only find astronomical phenomena, STLF sky survey can even reveal how short astronomical phenomena evolve. The difference does not only lead the new survey data but also the new analysis style. It requires that database behind STLF sky survey should support continuous analysis on data streaming, real-time analysis on short-term data and complex analysis on long-term historical data. In addition, both insertion and query latencies have strict requirements to ensure that scientific phenomena can be discovered. However, the existing databases cannot support our scenario. In this paper, we propose AstroServ, a distributed system for analysis and management of large-scale and full life-cycle astronomical data. AstroServ's core components include three data service layers and a query engine. Each data service layer serves for a specific time period of data and query engine can provide the uniform analysis interface on different data. In addition, we also provide many applications including interactive analysis interface and data mining tool to help scientists efficiently use data. The experimental results show that AstroServ can meet the strict performance requirements and the good recognition accuracy.

Cloud based Real-Time and Low Latency Scientific Event Analysis

Astronomy is well recognized as big data driven science. As the novel observation infrastructures are developed, the sky survey cycles have been shortened from a few days to a few seconds, causing data processing pressure to shift from offline to online. However, existing scientific databases focus on offline analysis of long-term historical data, not real-time and low latency analysis of large-scale newly arriving data. In this paper, a cloud based method is proposed to efficiently analyze scientific events on large-scale newly arriving data. The solution is implemented as a highly efficient system, namely Aserv. A set of compact data store and index structures are proposed to describe the proposed scientific events and a typical analysis pattern is formulized as a set of query operations. Domain aware filter, accuracy aware data partition, highly efficient index and frequently used statistical data designs are four key methods to optimize the performance of Aserv. Experimental results under the typical cloud environment show that the presented optimization mechanism can meet the low latency demand for both large data insertion and scientific event analysis. Aserv can insert 3.5 million rows of data within 3 seconds and perform the heaviest query on 6.7 billion rows of data also within 3 seconds. Furthermore, a performance model is given to help Aserv choose the right cloud resource setup to meet the guaranteed real-time performance requirement.

Nonlinear frequency conversion and manipulation of vector beams in a Sagnac loop

Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. To date, it is still a challenge to realize nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC) and manipulation of such VBs because of the polarization sensitivity in most of nonlinear processes. Here, we report an experimental realization of NFC and manipulation of VBs which can be used to expand the available frequency band. The main idea of our scheme is to introduce a Sagnac loop to solve the polarization dependence of NFC in nonlinear crystals. Furthermore, we find that a linearly polarized vector beam should be transformed to an exponential form before performing the NFC. The experimental results are well agree with our theoretical model. The present method is also applicable to other wave bands and second order nonlinear processes, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

Topological charge independent frequency conversion of twisted light

Light with orbital angular momentum (OAM), or twisted light, is widely investigated in the fields of optical communications, quantum information science and nonlinear optics by harnessing its unbounded dimension. For light-matter interacting with twisted light like quantum memory and nonlinear frequency conversion, efficiencies in these processes are usually decreasing exponentially with topological charges, which severely degrades the fidelity of the output states. Here we conceive and develop a method to eliminate the dependence of conversion efficiency on topological charges in second harmonic generation (SHG) process by utilizing a special designed image technique. The independence of SHG conversion efficiency on topological charge is verified for different topological charges, this independence is valid for various pump power. This method can be generalized to other light matter interaction processes and will revolute the field of light matter interaction with twisted light to achieve higher efficiency and higher fidelity.

Up-conversion imaging processing with field-of-view and edge enhancement

Spiral phase contrast is an important and convenient imaging processing technology in edge detection, and a broader field-of-view (FOV) of imaging is a long-pursuing aim to see more regions of the illumination objects. Compared with near-infrared (NIR) spectrum, the up-conversion imaging in visible spectrum benefits from the advantages of higher efficiency detection and lower potential speckle. FOV enhanced and spiral phase contrast up-conversion imaging processing methods by using second order nonlinear frequency up-conversion from NIR spectrum to visible spectrum in two different configurations are presented in this work. By changing the temperature of crystal, controllable spatial patterns of imaging with more than 4.5 times enhancement of FOV is realized in both configurations. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree well with the experimental observations. Our results provide a very promising way in imaging processing, which may be widely used in biomedicine, remote sensing and up-conversion monitoring.

Revealing photons behaviors in a birefringent interferometer

The interferometer is one of the most important devices for revealing the nature of light and for precision optical metrology. Though lots of experiments were performed for probing photons behaviors in various configurations, a complete study of photons behavior in a birefringent interferometer has not ever been performed. Based on an environmental turbulence immune Mach-Zehnder interferometer, tunable photonic beatings by rotating a birefringent crystal versus the temperature of the crystal for both single-photon and two-photon are observed. Furthermore, the two-photon interference fringes beat two times faster than the single-photon interference fringes. This beating effect is used to determine the thermal dispersion coefficients of the two principal refractive axes with a single measurement, the two-photon interference shows super-resolution and high sensitivity. Obvious differences between two-photon and single photon interference are also revealed in an unbalanced situations. In addition, influences of the photon bandwidth to the beating behaviors that come from polarization-dependent decoherence are also investigated. Our findings will be important for better understanding the behavior of two-photon interference in a birefringent interferometer and for precision optical metrology with quantum enhancement.

All-optical quantum signal demultiplexer

Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is one of the most successful methods for enhancing data transmission rates in both classical and quantum communication networks. Although signal multiplexing and demultiplexing are equally important, traditional multiplexing and demultiplexing methods are based on passive devices such as arrayed waveguides and fiber Bragg cascade filters, which, although widely used in commercial devices, lack any active tuning ability. In this work, we propose a signal demultiplexing method based on sum frequency generation (SFG) with two significant features: first, any signal from the common communication channel can be demultiplexed to a single user by switching the pump wavelength; second, a cheap high-performance detector can be used for signal detection. These two features were demonstrated by demultiplexing multi-channel energy-time entanglement generated by a micro-cavity silicon chip. High interference visibilities over three channels after demultiplexing showed that entanglement was preserved and verified the high performance of the demultiplexer, which will find wide application in high-capacity quantum communication networks.

CCP: Conflicts Check Protocol for Bitcoin Block Security

In this work, we present our early stage results on a Conflicts Check Protocol (CCP) that enables preventing potential attacks on bitcoin system. Based on the observation and discovery of a common symptom that many attacks may generate, CCP refines the current bitcoin systems by proposing a novel arbitration mechanism that is capable to determine the approval or abandon of certain transactions involved in confliction. This work examines the security issue of bitcoin from a new perspective, which may extend to a larger scope of attack analysis and prevention

Loss-based Experimental Test of Bohr's Complementarity Principle with Single Neutral Atom

An experimental test of quantum complementarity principle based on single neutral atom trapped in a blue detuned bottle trap was here performed. A Ramsey interferometer was used to assess the wavelike behavior or particle-like behavior with second $π/2$-rotation on or off. The wavelike behavior or particle-like behavior is characterized by the visibility $V$ of the interference or the predictability $P$ of which-path information, respectively. The measured results fulfill the complementarity relation $P^2+V^2\leq1$. Imbalance losses were deliberately introduced to the stem and find the complementarity relation is then formally "violated." All the experimental results can be completely explained theoretically by quantum mechanics without considering the interference between wave and particle behaviors. This observation complements existing information concerning the BCP based on wave-particle duality of massive quantum.

An efficient scheme to optimize the superconducting levitation via genetic algorithm

The superconducting levitation consisting of high-temperature superconductors (HTSs) and permanent magnet guideway (PMG) is deemed promising technique for the advancement of the maglev transit. To improve the cost-efficiency and thus reduce the investment of this superconducting levitation transit, the optimization of the PMG is the most critical issue of practical interest since it serves as the continuous rail to generate the magnetic field by the rare-earth magnets. By the use of a generalized vector potential within the quasistatic approximation as the state variable to mathematically describe the HTS as well as the surrounding medium, an efficient scheme for optimizing the superconducting levitation has been developed with the genetic algorithm as a strategy to perform the global search of the PMG. This scheme directly describes the HTS element without simplification of its intractable nonlinearity of constitutive law, which renders this study stand out from the existing efforts. The testing of the proposed scheme on a typical optimization of the superconducting levitation has proven its robustness and efficiency, i.e., the time cost is merely 3.6 hours with 3000 individuals evaluated on a moderate desktop. Taking a HTS over the Halbach-derived PMG as a practice, a set of case studies were carried out to understand how the working condition, geometrical and material characteristics of the HTS affect its maximum levitation force achievable at different constraints of the cross-section of the PMG. The findings attained by the case studies, being inaccessible from the experiments, are aimed to provide useful implications for the optimization of a superconducting levitation system for the transit and analogous purposes.

High-gravity Spreading of Liquid Coatings on Wetting Flexible Substrates

This work describes a mechanical approach for manipulating the capillary length and spreading of liquid coatings on flexible substrates with high gravity. Experimental verification in the literature has focused on cases under standard gravity on earth, and to the authors' knowledge, this work is the first to explore its relevance to spreading puddles under high gravity. By using centrifugation with a high-density liquid base underneath a coated substrate, it is possible to apply acceleration normal to a substrate to decrease the capillary length and increase the rate of spreading. Due to the nature of centrifugation, this method works primarily on flexible substrates, which bend with a curvature that conforms to a contour of uniformly distributed centrifugal acceleration. With high gravity of 600 g applied, the capillary length reduces by a factor of 24.5, and the spreading shifts from "transient spreading" between the surface tension-driven and gravity-driven regimes to the gravity-driven regime. Experimental results show that high gravitational acceleration will enhance the rate of spreading such that a puddle, which would require 12 hours under standard gravity on earth to go from an 8-μl droplet to a 40-μm thick puddle, would require less than 1 minute under 600 g. Overall, this work suggests that previously derived expressions for gravity-driven spreading of puddles under earth's standard gravity extend to predicting the behavior of puddles spreading on smooth, wetting substrates exposed to more than 100 g's of acceleration.

Losses-based test of wave-particle duality with Mach-Zehnder interferometers

Wave-particle duality of photons with losses in the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experiment is done with the standard MZI with the beam splitter or the beam merger being continuously varied. The losses are deliberately introduced either inside the MZI (the two arms between the beam splitter and beam mergers) or outside the MZI (after the beam merger). It is proved that the unbalanced losses have great influence on the predictability $P$ (particle nature) and visibility $V$ (wave nature). For the former case the duality inequality holds while for the later the duality inequality is ``violated''. We get $P^2+V^2>1$. This ``violation'' could be eliminated in principle by switching the two paths and detectors and then averaging the results. The observed results can be exactly explained theoretically. The experiment is done with coherent beam, instead of single photons, and we have proved that they are exactly equivalent in duality experiment with MZI.

Singularities, geodesics and Green functions in the BTZ black hole

In the context of studying black hole singularities by the AdS/CFT correspondence, we study the BTZ black hole by a scalar field propagating on it and the corresponding two-point Green functions. We explore how positions inside the horizon are encoded in the boundary theory. The main idea is to relate two different semi-classical approximations of the Green function and see how this indicates the bulk-boundary correspondence. From a key observation of Festucia and Liu, which is a frequency-geodesic identification, we deduce a geodesic approximation from the saddle point approximation. As an application, we find saddles of the Green function and hence their corresponding geodesics. The conclusion is that some of these geodesics do go inside the horizon. This gives the possibility of resolving the singularity from the boundary theory.
