Increasing two-photon entangled dimensions by shaping input beam profiles

Photon pair entangled in high dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) degree of freedom (DOF) has been widely regarded as a possible source in improving the capacity of quantum information processing. The need for the generation of a high dimensional maximally entangled state in the OAM DOF is therefore much desired. In this work, we demonstrate a simple method to generate a broader and flatter OAM spectrum, i.e. a larger spiral bandwidth (SB), of entangled photon pairs generated through spontaneous parametric down-conversion by modifying the pump beam profile. By investigating both experimentally and theoretically, we have found that an exponential pump profile that is roughly the inverse of the mode profiles of the single-mode fibers used for OAM detection will provide a much larger SB when compared to a Gaussian shaped pump.

Extra-cavity-enhanced difference-frequency generation at 1.63 μm

A 1632-nm laser has highly important applications in interfacing the wavelength of rubidium-based quantum memories (795 nm) and the telecom band (typically 1550 nm) by frequency conversion in three-wave mixing processes. A 1632-nm laser source based on pump-enhanced difference frequency generation is demonstrated. It has 300 mW of output power, in agreement with simulations, and a 55% quantum efficiency. An average power fluctuation of 0.51% over one hour was observed, and 200-kHz linewidth was measured using a delayed self-heterodyne method.

Frequency up-conversion of an infrared image via a flat-top pump beam

The infrared imaging detection is an important and promising technology having wide applications. In this work, we report on the frequency up-conversion detection of an image based on sum frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal with a flat-top beam acting as the pump instead of a Gaussian beam, the up-converted image at 525 nm falls in the sensitive band of visible detectors and human eyes. Both theoretical simulations and the experimental results clearly demonstrate that using a flat-top beam as a pump can improve the fidelity of an image after the up-conversion compared with a Gaussian pump beam. Our scheme will be very promising for infrared image detection based on frequency up-conversion.

Domain Knowledge Based Brain Tumor Segmentation and Overall Survival Prediction

Automatically segmenting sub-regions of gliomas (necrosis, edema and enhancing tumor) and accurately predicting overall survival (OS) time from multimodal MRI sequences have important clinical significance in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of gliomas. However, due to the high degree variations of heterogeneous appearance and individual physical state, the segmentation of sub-regions and OS prediction are very challenging. To deal with these challenges, we utilize a 3D dilated multi-fiber network (DMFNet) with weighted dice loss for brain tumor segmentation, which incorporates prior volume statistic knowledge and obtains a balance between small and large objects in MRI scans. For OS prediction, we propose a DenseNet based 3D neural network with position encoding convolutional layer (PECL) to extract meaningful features from T1 contrast MRI, T2 MRI and previously segmented subregions. Both labeled data and unlabeled data are utilized to prevent over-fitting for semi-supervised learning. Those learned deep features along with handcrafted features (such as ages, volume of tumor) and position encoding segmentation features are fed to a Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT) to predict a specific OS day

$q$-form field on a $p$-brane with codimension two

In this paper, by performing a general Kaluza-Klein (KK) decomposition, we obtain a gauge invariant effective action for a bulk massless $q$-form field on a $p$-brane with codimension two. There appear four types of KK modes: two $(q-1)$-forms and one $(q-2)$-form in addtion to the ordinary $q$-form, which are essential for the gauge invariance. Due to the two extra dimensions, we find eight Schrödinger-like equations for the four modes and their mass spectra are closely related. Moreover, via this decomposition mechanism, the Hodge duality in the bulk naturally induces four coupled dualities on the brane, which guarantees that the physical equavalence of bulk dual fields is preserved under the dimensional reduction.

Lunar impact craters identification and age estimation with Chang'E data by deep and transfer learning

Impact craters, as "lunar fossils", are the most dominant lunar surface features and occupy most of the Moon's surface. Their formation and evolution record the history of the Solar System. Sixty years of triumphs in the lunar exploration projects accumulated a large amount of lunar data. Currently, there are 9137 existing recognized craters. However, only 1675 of them have been determined age, which is obviously not satisfactory to reveal the evolution of the Moon. Identifying craters is a challenging task due to their enormous difference in size, large variations in shape and vast presence. Furthermore, estimating the age of craters is extraordinarily difficult due to their complex and different morphologies. Here, in order to effectively identify craters and estimate their age, we convert the crater identification problem into a target detection task and crater age estimation into a taxonomy structure. From an initial small number of available craters, we progressively identify craters and estimate their age from Chang'E data by transfer learning (TL) using deep neural networks. For comprehensive identification of multi-scale craters, a two-stage craters detection approach is developed. Thus 117240 unrecognized lunar craters that range in diameter from 532 km to 1 km are identified. Then, a two-stage classification approach is developed to estimate the age of craters by simultaneously extracting their morphological features and stratigraphic information. The age of 79243 craters larger than 3 km in diameter is estimated. These identified and aged craters throughout the mid and low-latitude regions of the Moon are crucial for reconstructing the dynamic evolution process of the Solar System.

Kalb-Ramond field localization on a de Sitter Thick Brane

In this paper, we study the localization of Kalb-Ramond (KR) tensorial gauge field on a non-flat de Sitter thick brane. The localization and resonance of KR gauge field are discussed for three kinds of couplings. For the first coupling there is no localized tensorial zero mode. For the other two couplings, the zero mode of KR field can be localized under certain condition. There are resonant KK modes on the thick brane for the third case. Furthermore, we mainly analyze the effects of three parameters on the localization and resonant mode for KR field.

Correlating the Electronic Structures of Metallic/Semiconductor MoTe2 Interface to its Atomic Structures

Contact interface properties are important in determining the performances of devices based on atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially those with short channels. Understanding the contact interface is therefore quite important to design better devices. Herein, we use scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to reveal the electronic structures within the metallic (1T')-semiconducting (2H) MoTe2 coplanar phase boundary across a wide spectral range and correlate its properties and atomic structure. We find that the 2H-MoTe2 excitonic peaks cross the phase boundary into the 1T' phase within a range of approximately 150 nm. The 1T'-MoTe2 crystal field can penetrate the boundary and extend into the 2H phase by approximately two unit cells. The plasmonic oscillations exhibit strong angle dependence, i.e., a red-shift (approximately 0.3 eV-1.2 eV) occurs within 4 nm at 1T'/2H-MoTe2 boundaries with large tilt angles, but there is no shift at zero-tilted boundaries. These atomic-scale measurements reveal the structure-property relationships of 1T'/2H-MoTe2 boundary, providing useful information for phase boundary engineering and device development based on 2D materials.

Demonstration of beta-Ga2O3 Optical Waveguides and the Analysis of Their Propagation Losses in the UV-Visible Spectra

This paper reports the first demonstration of beta-phase gallium oxide as optical waveguides on sapphire substrates grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The propagation losses from visible to ultraviolet spectra were comprehensively studied. By optimizing the fabrication processes, minimum propagation loss was identified to be 3.7 dB/cm at the wavelength of 810 nm, which is comparable to other wide bandgap materials within the III-N family (GaN, AlN). To further reveal the underlying loss mechanisms, several physical mechanisms such as two-photon absorption, sidewall scattering, top surface scattering, and bulk scattering were taken into consideration. The results obtained from this work suggest that beta-Ga2O3 is promising for ultraviolet-visible spectrum integrated photonic applications.

A Fiber Optoacoustic Emitter with Maximized Conversion Efficiency and Controlled Ultrasound Frequency for Biomedical Applications

Focused ultrasound has attracted great attention in minimally invasive therapy, gene delivery, brain stimulation, etc. Frequency below 1 MHz has been identified preferable for high-efficacy drug delivery, gene transfection and neurostimulation due to minimized tissue heating and cell fragmentation. However, the poor spatial resolution of several millimeters and the large device diameter of ~25 mm of current sub-MHz ultrasound technology severely hinders its further applications for effective, precise, safe and wearable biomedical studies and clinical use. To address this issue, we report the development of a novel fiber-based optoacoustic emitter (FOE). The FOE, a new miniaturized ultrasound source, is composed of an optical diffusion coating layer and an expansion coating layer at an optical fiber distal end with a diameter of approximately 500 microns. Taking advantage of the fiber size and diffusive nanoparticles introduced, the ultrasound generated by the FOEs showed a spatial confinement of sub-millimeter. The optoacoustic conversion efficiency was maximized through choosing absorbing nanomaterials and thermal expansion matrix. Controllable frequencies in the range of 0.083 MHz to 5.500 MHz were achieved through using the diffusion layer as a damping material or modifying the nano-composition in the expansion layer. This sub-MHz frequency controllability allows FOEs to be used as a localized ultrasound source for precise cell modulation. We demonstrated optoacoustic cell membrane sonoporation with a localization of sub-millimeter and negligible heat deposition, implicating its broad biomedical applications, including region-specific drug delivery, gene transfection as well as localized neuron stimulation.

On-chip directional octave-spanning supercontinuum generation from high order mode in near ultraviolet to infrared spectrum using AlN waveguides

On-chip ultraviolet to infrared (UV-IR) spectrum frequency metrology is of crucial importance as a characterization tool for fundamental studies on quantum physics, chemistry, and biology. Due to the strong material dispersion, traditional techniques fail to demonstrate the device that can be applied to generate coherent broadband spectrum that covers the full UV-IR wavelengths. In this work, we explore several novel techniques for supercontinuum generation covering near-UV to near-IR spectrum using AlN micro-photonic waveguides, which is essential for frequency metrology applications: First, to create anomalous dispersion, high order mode (TE10) was adopted, together with its carefully designed high efficiency excitation strategies. Second, the spectrum was broadened by soliton fission through third order dispersion and second harmonic generation, by which directional energy transfer from near-IR to near-UV can be obtained. Finally, high quality single crystalline AlN material was used to provide broadband transparency from UV to IR. Under decently low pulse energy of 0.36 nJ, the experimental spectrum from supercontinuum generation covers from 490 nm to over 1100 nm, with a second harmonic generation band covering from 405 nm to 425 nm. This work paves the way towards UV-IR full spectrum on-chip frequency metrology applications.

Generating single longitudinal mode entangled photons in telecom band via a submillimeter monolithic cavity

A high-quality, compact, and narrow-bandwidth entangled photon source (EPS) is indispensable for realization of many quantum communication protocols. Usually, a free space cavity containing a nonlinear crystal is used to generate a narrow bandwidth EPS through spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). One major drawback is that this occupies a large space and requires complex optical and electrical control systems. Here we present a simple and compact method to generate a single-longitudinal-mode time-energy EPS via type II SPDC in a submillimeter Fabry-Perot cavity. We characterize the quality of the EPS by measuring the coincidence to accidental coincidence ratio, the two-photon time cross-correlation function and the two-photon interference fringes. All measured results clearly demonstrate that the developed source is of high quality when compared with EPSs generated using other configurations. We believe this source is very promising for applications in the quantum communication field.

Inventory Management for High-Frequency Trading with Imperfect Competition

We study Nash equilibria for inventory-averse high-frequency traders (HFTs), who trade to exploit information about future price changes. For discrete trading rounds, the HFTs' optimal trading strategies and their equilibrium price impact are described by a system of nonlinear equations; explicit solutions obtain around the continuous-time limit. Unlike in the risk-neutral case, the optimal inventories become mean-reverting and vanish as the number of trading rounds becomes large. In contrast, the HFTs' risk-adjusted profits and the equilibrium price impact converge to their risk-neutral counterparts. Compared to a social-planner solution for cooperative HFTs, Nash competition leads to excess trading, so that marginal transaction taxes in fact decrease market liquidity.

Fully Integrated On-FPGA Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The implementation of Molecular Dynamics (MD) on FPGAs has received substantial attention. Previous work, however, has consisted of either proof-of-concept implementations of components, usually the range-limited force; full systems, but with much of the work shared by the host CPU; or prototype demonstrations, e.g., using OpenCL, that neither implement a whole system nor have competitive performance. In this paper, we present what we believe to be the first full-scale FPGA-based simulation engine, and show that its performance is competitive with a GPU (running Amber in an industrial production environment). The system features on-chip particle data storage and management, short- and long-range force evaluation, as well as bonded forces, motion update, and particle migration. Other contributions of this work include exploring numerous architectural trade-offs and analysis on various mappings schemes among particles/cells and the various on-chip compute units. The potential impact is that this system promises to be the basis for long timescale Molecular Dynamics with a commodity cluster.

A resnet-based universal method for speckle reduction in optical coherence tomography images

In this work we propose a ResNet-based universal method for speckle reduction in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. The proposed model contains 3 main modules: Convolution-BN-ReLU, Branch and Residual module. Unlike traditional algorithms, the model can learn from training data instead of selecting parameters manually such as noise level. Application of this proposed method to the OCT images shows a more than 22 dB signal-to-noise ratio improvement in speckle noise reduction with minimal structure blurring. The proposed method provides strong generalization ability and can process noisy other types of OCT images without retraining. It outperforms other filtering methods in suppressing speckle noises and revealing subtle features.

Plasmon-enhanced Stimulated Raman Scattering Microscopy with Single-molecule Detection Sensitivity

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy allows for high-speed label-free chemical imaging of biomedical systems. The imaging sensitivity of SRS microscopy is limited to ~10 mM for endogenous biomolecules. Electronic pre-resonant SRS allows detection of sub-micromolar chromophores. However, label-free SRS detection of single biomolecules having extremely small Raman cross-sections (~10-30 cm2 sr-1) remains unreachable. Here, we demonstrate plasmon-enhanced stimulated Raman scattering (PESRS) microscopy with single-molecule detection sensitivity. Incorporating pico-Joule laser excitation, background subtraction, and a denoising algorithm, we obtained robust single-pixel SRS spectra exhibiting the statistics of single-molecule events. Single-molecule detection was verified by using two isotopologues of adenine. We further demonstrated the capability of applying PESRS for biological applications and utilized PESRS to map adenine released from bacteria due to starvation stress. PESRS microscopy holds the promise for ultrasensitive detection of molecular events in chemical and biomedical systems.

A Novel PN junction between Mechanically Exfoliated \b{eta}-Ga2O3 and p-GaN

Several pn junctions were constructed from mechanically exfoliated ultrawide bandgap (UWBG) beta-phase gallium oxide (\b{eta}-Ga2O3) and p-type gallium nitride (GaN). The mechanical exfoliation process, which is described in detail, is similar to that of graphene and other 2D materials. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) scans of the exfoliated \b{eta}-Ga2O3 flakes show very smooth surfaces with average roughness of 0.647 nm and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) scans reveal flat, clean interfaces between the \b{eta}-Ga2O3 flakes and p-GaN. The device showed a rectification ratio around 541.3 (V+5/V-5). Diode performance improved over the temperature range of 25°C and 200°C, leading to an unintentional donor activation energy of 135 meV. As the thickness of exfoliated \b{eta}-Ga2O3 increases, ideality factors decrease as do the diode turn on voltages, tending toward an ideal threshold voltage of 3.2 V as determined by simulation. This investigation can help increase study of novel devices between mechanically exfoliated \b{eta}-Ga2O3 and other materials.

A Frequency Scaling based Performance Indicator Framework for Big Data Systems

It is important for big data systems to identify their performance bottleneck. However, the popular indicators such as resource utilizations, are often misleading and incomparable with each other. In this paper, a novel indicator framework which can directly compare the impact of different indicators with each other is proposed to identify and analyze the performance bottleneck efficiently. A methodology which can construct the indicator from the performance change with the CPU frequency scaling is described. Spark is used as an example of a big data system and two typical SQL benchmarks are used as the workloads to evaluate the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is accurate compared with the resource utilization method and easy to implement compared with some white-box method. Meanwhile, the analysis with our indicators lead to some interesting findings and valuable performance optimization suggestions for big data systems.
