Life-Long Multi-Task Learning of Adaptive Path Tracking Policy for Autonomous Vehicle

This paper proposes a life-long adaptive path tracking policy learning method for autonomous vehicles that can self-evolve and self-adapt with multi-task knowledge. Firstly, the proposed method can learn a model-free control policy for path tracking directly from the historical driving experience, where the property of vehicle dynamics and corresponding control strategy can be learned simultaneously. Secondly, by utilizing the life-long learning method, the proposed method can learn the policy with task-incremental knowledge without encountering catastrophic forgetting. Thus, with continual multi-task knowledge learned, the policy can iteratively adapt to new tasks and improve its performance with knowledge from new tasks. Thirdly, a memory evaluation and updating method is applied to optimize memory structure for life-long learning which enables the policy to learn toward selected directions. Experiments are conducted using a high-fidelity vehicle dynamic model in a complex curvy road to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method can effectively evolve with continual multi-task knowledge and adapt to the new environment, where the performance of the proposed method can also surpass two commonly used baseline methods after evolving.

Information Sieve: Content Leakage Reduction in End-to-End Prosody For Expressive Speech Synthesis

Expressive neural text-to-speech (TTS) systems incorporate a style encoder to learn a latent embedding as the style information. However, this embedding process may encode redundant textual information. This phenomenon is called content leakage. Researchers have attempted to resolve this problem by adding an ASR or other auxiliary supervision loss functions. In this study, we propose an unsupervised method called the "information sieve" to reduce the effect of content leakage in prosody transfer. The rationale of this approach is that the style encoder can be forced to focus on style information rather than on textual information contained in the reference speech by a well-designed downsample-upsample filter, i.e., the extracted style embeddings can be downsampled at a certain interval and then upsampled by duplication. Furthermore, we used instance normalization in convolution layers to help the system learn a better latent style space. Objective metrics such as the significantly lower word error rate (WER) demonstrate the effectiveness of this model in mitigating content leakage. Listening tests indicate that the model retains its prosody transferability compared with the baseline models such as the original GST-Tacotron and ASR-guided Tacotron.

Orientation-Aware Planning for Parallel Task Execution of Omni-Directional Mobile Robot

Omni-directional mobile robot (OMR) systems have been very popular in academia and industry for their superb maneuverability and flexibility. Yet their potential has not been fully exploited, where the extra degree of freedom in OMR can potentially enable the robot to carry out extra tasks. For instance, gimbals or sensors on robots may suffer from a limited field of view or be constrained by the inherent mechanical design, which will require the chassis to be orientation-aware and respond in time. To solve this problem and further develop the OMR systems, in this paper, we categorize the tasks related to OMR chassis into orientation transition tasks and position transition tasks, where the two tasks can be carried out at the same time. By integrating the parallel task goals in a single planning problem, we proposed an orientation-aware planning architecture for OMR systems to execute the orientation transition and position transition in a unified and efficient way. A modified trajectory optimization method called orientation-aware timed-elastic-band (OATEB) is introduced to generate the trajectory that satisfies the requirements of both tasks. Experiments in both 2D simulated environments and real scenes are carried out. A four-wheeled OMR is deployed to conduct the real scene experiment and the results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of simultaneously executing parallel tasks and is applicable to real-life scenarios.

Laser Driven Fluorescence Emission in a Nitrogen Gas Jet at 100 MHz Repetition Rate

We report the fluorescence emission which is driven by femtosecond laser pulses with a repetition rate of 100 MHz and a center wavelength of 1040 nm in a nitrogen gas jet. The experiment is performed in a femtosecond enhancement cavity coupled with high repetition rate laser for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In contrast to previous observation at low repetition rate with a nitrogen gas jet, where the 391 nm radiation was observed but the 337 nm emission was missing, the 337 nm emission is 3 times stronger than the 391 nm emission in our experiment. By examining the dependence of the radiation intensity on the flow rate of the nitrogen gas and the polarization of the pump pulse, the formation mechanism of the N2(C3Πu) triplet excited state, i.e., the upper state of the 337 nm emission, is investigated. We attribute the main excitation process to the inelastic collision excitation process, and exclude the possibility of the dissociative recombination as the dominate pathway. The role of the steady state plasma that is generated under our experimental conditions is also discussed.

Fundamental group of Galois covers of degree $6$ surfaces

In this paper we consider the Galois covers of algebraic surfaces of degree 6, with all associated planar degenerations. We compute the fundamental groups of those Galois covers, using their degeneration. We show that for 8 types of degenerations the fundamental group of the Galois cover is non-trivial and for 20 types it is trivial. Moreover, we compute the Chern numbers of all the surfaces with this type of degeneration and prove that the signatures of all their Galois covers are negative. We formulate a conjecture regarding the structure of the fundamental groups of the Galois covers based on our findings. With an appendix by the authors listing the detailed computations and an appendix by Guo Zhiming classifying degree 6 planar degenerations.

Fundamental group of Galois covers of degree 5 surfaces

Let $X$ be an algebraic surface of degree $5$, which is considered as a branch cover of $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with respect to a generic projection. The surface has a natural Galois cover with Galois group $S_5$. In this paper, we deal with the fundamental groups of Galois covers of degree $5$ surfaces that degenerate to nice plane arrangements; each of them is a union of five planes such that no three planes meet in a line.

High-precision target positioning system for unmanned vehicles based on binocular vision

Unmanned vehicles often need to locate targets with high precision during work. In the unmanned material handling workshop, the unmanned vehicle needs to perform high-precision pose estimation of the workpiece to accurately grasp the workpiece. In this context, this paper proposes a high-precision unmanned vehicle target positioning system based on binocular vision. The system uses a region-based stereo matching algorithm to obtain a disparity map, and uses the RANSAC algorithm to extract position and posture features, which achives the estimation of the position and attitude of a six-degree-of-freedom cylindrical workpiece. In order to verify the effect of the system, this paper collects the accuracy and calculation time of the output results of the cylinder in different poses. The experimental data shows that the position accuracy of the system is 0.61~1.17mm and the angular accuracy is 1.95~5.13°, which can achieve better high-precision positioning effect.

Driver Behavior Modelling at the Urban Intersection via Canonical Correlation Analysis

The urban intersection is a typically dynamic and complex scenario for intelligent vehicles, which exists a variety of driving behaviors and traffic participants. Accurately modelling the driver behavior at the intersection is essential for intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Previous researches mainly focus on using attention mechanism to model the degree of correlation. In this research, a canonical correlation analysis (CCA)-based framework is proposed. The value of canonical correlation is used for feature selection. Gaussian mixture model and Gaussian process regression are applied for driver behavior modelling. Two experiments using simulated and naturalistic driving data are designed for verification. Experimental results are consistent with the driver's judgment. Comparative studies show that the proposed framework can obtain a better performance.

VecQ: Minimal Loss DNN Model Compression With Vectorized Weight Quantization

Quantization has been proven to be an effective method for reducing the computing and/or storage cost of DNNs. However, the trade-off between the quantization bitwidth and final accuracy is complex and non-convex, which makes it difficult to be optimized directly. Minimizing direct quantization loss (DQL) of the coefficient data is an effective local optimization method, but previous works often neglect the accurate control of the DQL, resulting in a higher loss of the final DNN model accuracy. In this paper, we propose a novel metric called Vector Loss. Based on this new metric, we develop a new quantization solution called VecQ, which can guarantee minimal direct quantization loss and better model accuracy. In addition, in order to speed up the proposed quantization process during model training, we accelerate the quantization process with a parameterized probability estimation method and template-based derivation calculation. We evaluate our proposed algorithm on MNIST, CIFAR, ImageNet, IMDB movie review and THUCNews text data sets with numerical DNN models. The results demonstrate that our proposed quantization solution is more accurate and effective than the state-of-the-art approaches yet with more flexible bitwidth support. Moreover, the evaluation of our quantized models on Saliency Object Detection (SOD) tasks maintains comparable feature extraction quality with up to 16$\times$ weight size reduction.

Resonant Asymmetric All-Dielectric Metasurface for Boosting Third-Harmonic Generation

Resonant metasurfaces have received extensive attention due to their sharp spectral feature and extraordinary field enhancement. In this work, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of silicon nanopillars, we achieve a sharp Fano resonance. The far-field radiation and near-field distribution of metasurfaces are calculated and analyzed to further uncover the resonant performance of metasurfaces. Moreover, the theoretical derivation and simulation exhibit an inverse quadratic dependence of Q-factors on asymmetry parameters, revealing that the resonance is governed by the symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum. Finally we experimentally demonstrate the sharp resonance, and employ it to effciently boost the third-harmonic generation. This enhancement can be attributed to the strong optical intensity enhancement inside the metasurface.

Design triple points, nexus points and related topological phases by stacking monolayers

Triple points and nexus points are two interesting topological phases, which have been reported in some three-dimensional (3D) materials. Here, we propose that triple points, nexus points and related phases, such as topological tangle nodal lines, can be obtained by alternatively stacking two types of monolayers. Two conditions for the stacking monolayers are required: the first condition is that they have a three-fold (C3) rotation symmetry and three mirror planes along the C3 axis; the second condition is that one of the monolayers should be insulating while the other one should be metallic (or semiconducting) and has a double degenerate band and a nondegenerate band at Γpoint around the Fermi level. Hexagonal boron nitride (HBN) and α/α^'-boron sheets (α/α^'-BS) are suggested as candidate materials. Even if HBN is a wide-gap insulator, the interactions between layers lead to crossings of the nondegenerate and double degenerate bands along the direction normal to the nanosheets, and thus form triple/nexus points or related phases. A tight-binding model is adopted to explain the phase transition between triple points, nexus points and other related phases.

Room-temperature giant Stark effect of single photon emitter in van der Waals material

Single photon emitters (SPEs) are critical building blocks needed for quantum science and technology. For practical applications, large-scale room-temperature solid-state platforms are required. Color centers in layered hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) have recently been found to be ultra-bright and stable SPEs at room temperature. Yet, to scale up solid-state quantum information processing, large tuning range of single photon energy is demanded for wavelength division multiplexing quantum key distribution, where indistinguishability is not required, and for indistinguishable single-photon production from multi-emitters. Stark effect can tune the single photon energy by an electric field, which however, has been achieved only at cryogenic temperature so far. Here we report the first room-temperature Stark effect of SPEs by exploiting hBN color centers. Surprisingly, we observe a giant Stark shift of single photon more than 30 meV, about one order of magnitude greater than previously reported in color center emitters. Moreover, for the first time, the orientation of the electric permanent dipole moment in the solid-state SPE is determined via angle-resolved Stark effect, revealing the intrinsic broken symmetries at such a color center. The remarkable Stark shift discovered here and the significant advance in understanding its atomic structure pave a way towards the scalable solid-state on-chip quantum communication and computation at room temperature.

Enhanced-alignment Measure for Binary Foreground Map Evaluation

The existing binary foreground map (FM) measures to address various types of errors in either pixel-wise or structural ways. These measures consider pixel-level match or image-level information independently, while cognitive vision studies have shown that human vision is highly sensitive to both global information and local details in scenes. In this paper, we take a detailed look at current binary FM evaluation measures and propose a novel and effective E-measure (Enhanced-alignment measure). Our measure combines local pixel values with the image-level mean value in one term, jointly capturing image-level statistics and local pixel matching information. We demonstrate the superiority of our measure over the available measures on 4 popular datasets via 5 meta-measures, including ranking models for applications, demoting generic, random Gaussian noise maps, ground-truth switch, as well as human judgments. We find large improvements in almost all the meta-measures. For instance, in terms of application ranking, we observe improvementrangingfrom9.08% to 19.65% compared with other popular measures.

Symmorphic intersecting nodal rings in semiconducting layers

The unique properties of topological semimetals have strongly driven efforts to seek for new topological phases and related materials. Here, we identify a critical condition for the existence of linked nodal rings (LNRs) in symmorphic crystals, and propose that three types of LNRs, named as alpha-, beta- and gamma-type, can be obtained by stacking semiconducting layers. Several honeycomb structures are suggested to be topological LNR semimetals, including layered and "hidden" layered structures. Transitions between the three types of LNRs can be driven by external strains. Interesting surface states other than drumhead states are found in these topological materials.

Discovery of intrinsic ferromagnetism in 2D van der Waals crystals

It has been long hoped that the realization of long-range ferromagnetic order in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals, combined with their rich electronic and optical properties, would open up new possibilities for magnetic, magnetoelectric and magneto-optic applications. However, in 2D systems, the long-range magnetic order is strongly hampered by thermal fluctuations which may be counteracted by magnetic anisotropy, according to the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Prior efforts via defect and composition engineering, and proximity effect only locally or extrinsically introduce magnetic responses. Here we report the first experimental discovery of intrinsic long-range ferromagnetic order in pristine Cr2Ge2Te6 atomic layers by scanning magneto-optic Kerr microscopy. In such a 2D vdW soft ferromagnet, for the first time, an unprecedented control of transition temperature of ~ 35% - 57% enhancement is realized via surprisingly small fields (<= 0.3 Tesla in this work), in stark contrast to the stiffness of the transition temperature to magnetic fields in the three-dimensional regime. We found that the small applied field enables an effective anisotropy far surpassing the tiny magnetocrystalline anisotropy, opening up a sizable spin wave excitation gap. Confirmed by renormalized spin wave theory, we explain the phenomenon and conclude that the unusual field dependence of transition temperature constitutes a hallmark of 2D soft ferromagnetic vdW crystals. Our discovery of 2D soft ferromagnetic Cr2Ge2Te6 presents a close-to-ideal 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet for studying fundamental spin behaviors, and opens the door for exploring new applications such as ultra-compact spintronics.
