SDSS-IV MaNGA: environmental dependence of stellar age and metallicity gradients in nearby galaxies

We present a study on the stellar age and metallicity distributions for 1105 galaxies using the STARLIGHT software on MaNGA integral field spectra. We derive age and metallicity gradients by fitting straight lines to the radial profiles, and explore their correlations with total stellar mass M*, NUV-r colour and environments, as identified by both the large scale structure (LSS) type and the local density. We find that the mean age and metallicity gradients are close to zero but slightly negative, which is consistent with the inside-out formation scenario. Within our sample, we find that both the age and metallicity gradients show weak or no correlation with either the LSS type or local density environment. In addition, we also study the environmental dependence of age and metallicity values at the effective radii. The age and metallicity values are highly correlated with M* and NUV-r and are also dependent on LSS type as well as local density. Low-mass galaxies tend to be younger and have lower metallicity in low-density environments while high-mass galaxies are less affected by environment.

Less is More: Learning Prominent and Diverse Topics for Data Summarization

Statistical topic models efficiently facilitate the exploration of large-scale data sets. Many models have been developed and broadly used to summarize the semantic structure in news, science, social media, and digital humanities. However, a common and practical objective in data exploration tasks is not to enumerate all existing topics, but to quickly extract representative ones that broadly cover the content of the corpus, i.e., a few topics that serve as a good summary of the data. Most existing topic models fit exactly the same number of topics as a user specifies, which have imposed an unnecessary burden to the users who have limited prior knowledge. We instead propose new models that are able to learn fewer but more representative topics for the purpose of data summarization. We propose a reinforced random walk that allows prominent topics to absorb tokens from similar and smaller topics, thus enhances the diversity among the top topics extracted. With this reinforced random walk as a general process embedded in classical topic models, we obtain \textit{diverse topic models} that are able to extract the most prominent and diverse topics from data. The inference procedures of these diverse topic models remain as simple and efficient as the classical models. Experimental results demonstrate that the diverse topic models not only discover topics that better summarize the data, but also require minimal prior knowledge of the users.

DeepCas: an End-to-end Predictor of Information Cascades

Information cascades, effectively facilitated by most social network platforms, are recognized as a major factor in almost every social success and disaster in these networks. Can cascades be predicted? While many believe that they are inherently unpredictable, recent work has shown that some key properties of information cascades, such as size, growth, and shape, can be predicted by a machine learning algorithm that combines many features. These predictors all depend on a bag of hand-crafting features to represent the cascade network and the global network structure. Such features, always carefully and sometimes mysteriously designed, are not easy to extend or to generalize to a different platform or domain. Inspired by the recent successes of deep learning in multiple data mining tasks, we investigate whether an end-to-end deep learning approach could effectively predict the future size of cascades. Such a method automatically learns the representation of individual cascade graphs in the context of the global network structure, without hand-crafted features and heuristics. We find that node embeddings fall short of predictive power, and it is critical to learn the representation of a cascade graph as a whole. We present algorithms that learn the representation of cascade graphs in an end-to-end manner, which significantly improve the performance of cascade prediction over strong baselines that include feature based methods, node embedding methods, and graph kernel methods. Our results also provide interesting implications for cascade prediction in general.

The growth of the central region by acquisition of counter-rotating gas in star-forming galaxies

Galaxies grow through both internal and external processes. In about 10% of nearby red galaxies with little star formation, gas and stars are counter-rotating, demonstrating the importance of external gas acquisition in these galaxies. However, systematic studies of such phenomena in blue, star-forming galaxies are rare, leaving uncertain the role of external gas acquisition in driving evolution of blue galaxies. Based on new measurements with integral field spectroscopy of a large representative galaxy sample, we find an appreciable fraction of counter-rotators among blue galaxies (9 out of 489 galaxies). The central regions of blue counter-rotators show younger stellar populations and more intense, ongoing star formation than their outer parts, indicating ongoing growth of the central regions. The result offers observational evidence that the acquisition of external gas in blue galaxies is possible; the interaction with pre-existing gas funnels the gas into nuclear regions (< 1 kpc) to form new stars.

SDSS-IV MaNGA: Properties of galaxies with kinematically decoupled stellar and gaseous components

We study the properties of 66 galaxies with kinematically misaligned gas and stars from MaNGA survey. The fraction of kinematically misaligned galaxies varies with galaxy physical parameters, i.e. M*, SFR and sSFR. According to their sSFR, we further classify these 66 galaxies into three categories, 10 star-forming, 26 "Green Valley" and 30 quiescent ones. The properties of different types of kinematically misaligned galaxies are different in that the star-forming ones have positive gradient in D4000 and higher gas-phase metallicity, while the green valley/quiescent ones have negative D4000 gradients and lower gas-phase metallicity on average. There is evidence that all types of the kinematically misaligned galaxies tend to live in more isolated environment. Based on all these observational results, we propose a scenario for the formation of star forming galaxies with kinematically misaligned gas and stars - the progenitor accretes misaligned gas from a gas-rich dwarf or cosmic web, the cancellation of angular momentum from gas-gas collisions between the pre-existing gas and the accreted gas largely accelerates gas inflow, leading to fast centrally-concentrated star-formation. The higher metallicity is due to enrichment from this star formation. For the kinematically misaligned green valley and quiescent galaxies, they might be formed through gas-poor progenitors accreting kinematically misaligned gas from satellites which are smaller in mass.

DeepGraph: Graph Structure Predicts Network Growth

The topological (or graph) structures of real-world networks are known to be predictive of multiple dynamic properties of the networks. Conventionally, a graph structure is represented using an adjacency matrix or a set of hand-crafted structural features. These representations either fail to highlight local and global properties of the graph or suffer from a severe loss of structural information. There lacks an effective graph representation, which hinges the realization of the predictive power of network structures. In this study, we propose to learn the represention of a graph, or the topological structure of a network, through a deep learning model. This end-to-end prediction model, named DeepGraph, takes the input of the raw adjacency matrix of a real-world network and outputs a prediction of the growth of the network. The adjacency matrix is first represented using a graph descriptor based on the heat kernel signature, which is then passed through a multi-column, multi-resolution convolutional neural network. Extensive experiments on five large collections of real-world networks demonstrate that the proposed prediction model significantly improves the effectiveness of existing methods, including linear or nonlinear regressors that use hand-crafted features, graph kernels, and competing deep learning methods.

On Oracle Property and Asymptotic Validity of Bayesian Generalized Method of Moments

Statistical inference based on moment conditions and estimating equations is of substantial interest when it is difficult to specify a full probabilistic model. We propose a Bayesian flavored model selection framework based on (quasi-)posterior probabilities from the Bayesian Generalized Method of Moments (BGMM), which allows us to incorporate two important advantages of a Bayesian approach: the expressiveness of posterior distributions and the convenient computational method of Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). Theoretically we show that BGMM can achieve the posterior consistency for selecting the unknown true model, and that it possesses a Bayesian version of the oracle property, i.e. the posterior distribution for the parameter of interest is asymptotically normal and is as informative as if the true model were known. In addition, we show that the proposed quasi-posterior is valid to be interpreted as an approximate posterior distribution given a data summary. Our applications include modeling of correlated data, quantile regression, and graphical models based on partial correlations. We demonstrate the implementation of the BGMM model selection through numerical examples.

SDSS-IV MaNGA IFS Galaxy Survey --- Survey Design, Execution, and Initial Data Quality

The MaNGA Survey (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory) is one of three core programs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV. It is obtaining integral field spectroscopy (IFS) for 10K nearby galaxies at a spectral resolution of R~2000 from 3,622-10,354A. The design of the survey is driven by a set of science requirements on the precision of estimates of the following properties: star formation rate surface density, gas metallicity, stellar population age, metallicity, and abundance ratio, and their gradients; stellar and gas kinematics; and enclosed gravitational mass as a function of radius. We describe how these science requirements set the depth of the observations and dictate sample selection. The majority of targeted galaxies are selected to ensure uniform spatial coverage in units of effective radius (Re) while maximizing spatial resolution. About 2/3 of the sample is covered out to 1.5Re (Primary sample), and 1/3 of the sample is covered to 2.5Re (Secondary sample). We describe the survey execution with details that would be useful in the design of similar future surveys. We also present statistics on the achieved data quality, specifically, the point spread function, sampling uniformity, spectral resolution, sky subtraction, and flux calibration. For our Primary sample, the median r-band signal-to-noise ratio is ~73 per 1.4A pixel for spectra stacked between 1-1.5 Re. Measurements of various galaxy properties from the first year data show that we are meeting or exceeding the defined requirements for the majority of our science goals.

The upgrade system of BESIII ETOF with MRPC technology

The Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) endcap Time-Of-Filght (ETOF) was proposed to upgrade with Multigap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) technology to substitute the current ETOF of scintillator+PMT for extending time resolutin better than 80 ps and enhance the particle identification capability to satisfy the higher precision requirement of physics. The ETOF system including MRPC modules, front end electronics (FEE), CLOCK module, fast control boards and time to digital modules (TDIG), has been designed, constructed and done some experimental tests seperately. Aiming at examining the quality of entire ETOF system and training the operation of all participated parts, a cosmic ray test system was built at the laboratory and underwent about three months to guarantee performance. In this paper the results will be presented indicating that the entire ETOF system works well and satisfies the requirements of the upgrade.

Black Phosphorus Mid-Infrared Photodetectors with High Gain

Recently, black phosphorus (BP) has joined the two dimensional material family as a promising candidate for photonic applications, due to its moderate bandgap, high carrier mobility, and compatibility with a diverse range of substrates. Photodetectors are probably the most explored BP photonic devices, however, their unique potential compared with other layered materials in the mid-infrared wavelength range has not been revealed. Here, we demonstrate BP mid infrared detectors at 3.39 um with high internal gain, resulting in an external responsivity of 82 A/W. Noise measurements show that such BP photodetectors are capable of sensing low intensity mid-infrared light in the picowatt range. Moreover, the high photoresponse remains effective at kilohertz modulation frequencies, because of the fast carrier dynamics arising from BPs moderate bandgap. The high photoresponse at mid infrared wavelengths and the large dynamic bandwidth, together with its unique polarization dependent response induced by low crystalline symmetry, can be coalesced to promise photonic applications such as chip-scale mid-infrared sensing and imaging at low light levels.

Anisotropic Black Phosphorus Synaptic Device for Neuromorphic Applications

Synapses are functional links between neurons, through which "information" flows in the neural network. These connections vary significantly in strength, typically resulting from the intrinsic heterogeneity in their chemical and biological properties. Such heterogeneity is fundamental to the diversity of neural activities, which together with other features of the brain enables functions ranging from perception and recognition, to memory and reasoning. Realizing such heterogeneity in synaptic electronics is critical towards building artificial neural network with the potential for achieving the level of complexity in biological systems. However, such intrinsic heterogeneity has been very challenging to realize in current synaptic devices. Here, we demonstrate the first black phosphorus (BP) synaptic device, which offers intrinsic anisotropy in its synaptic characteristics directly resulting from its low crystal symmetry. The charge transfer between the 2-nm native oxide of BP and the BP channel is utilized to achieve the synaptic behavior. Key features of biological synapses such as long-term plasticity with heterogeneity, including long-term potentiation/depression and spike-timing-dependent plasticity, are mimicked. With the anisotropic BP synaptic devices, we also realize a simple compact heterogeneous axon-multi-synapses network. This demonstration represents an important step towards introducing intrinsic heterogeneity to artificial neuromorphic systems.

A Prototype Scalable Readout System for Micro-pattern Gas Detectors

A scalable readout system (SRS) is designed to provide a general solution for different micro-pattern gas detectors. The system mainly consists of three kinds of modules: the ASIC card, the Adapter card and the Front-End Card (FEC). The ASIC cards, mounted with particular ASIC chips, are designed for receiving detector signals. The Adapter card is in charge of digitizing the output signals from several ASIC cards. The FEC, edged-mounted with the Adapter, has a FPGA-based reconfigurable logic and I/O interfaces, allowing users to choose various ASIC cards and Adapters for different types of detectors. The FEC transfers data through Gigabit Ethernet protocol realized by a TCP processor (SiTCP) IP core in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). The readout system can be tailored to specific sizes to adapt to the experiment scales and readout requirements. In this paper, two kinds of multi-channel ASIC chips, VA140 and AGET, are applied to verify the concept of this SRS architecture. Based on this VA140 or AGET SRS, one FEC covers 8 ASIC (VA140) cards handling 512 detector channels, or 4 ASIC (AGET) cards handling 256 detector channels. More FECs can be assembled in chassis to handle thousands of detector channels.

The cosmic ray test of MRPCs for the BESIII ETOF upgrade

In order to improve the particle identification capability of the Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII),t is proposed to upgrade the current endcap time-of-flight (ETOF) detector with multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) technology. Aiming at extending ETOF overall time resolution better than 100ps, the whole system including MRPC detectors, new-designed Front End Electronics (FEE), CLOCK module, fast control boards and time to digital modules (TDIG), was built up and operated online 3 months under the cosmic ray. The main purposes of cosmic ray test are checking the detectors' construction quality, testing the joint operation of all instruments and guaranteeing the performance of the system. The results imply MRPC time resolution better than 100$ps$, efficiency is about 98$\%$ and the noise rate of strip is lower than 1$Hz/$($scm^{2}$) at normal threshold range, the details are discussed and analyzed specifically in this paper. The test indicates that the whole ETOF system would work well and satisfy the requirements of upgrade.

Clustering properties and halo masses for central galaxies in the local Universe

We investigate the clustering and dark matter halo mass for a sample of $\sim$16,000 central galaxies selected from the SDSS/DR7 group catalog. We select subsamples of central galaxies on three two-dimensional planes, each formed by stellar mass ($M_{\star}$) and one of the other properties including optical color (g-r) , surface stellar mass density ($μ_{\star}$) and central stellar velocity dispersion ($σ_{\star}$). For each subsample we measure both the projected cross-correlation function ($w_{p}(r_{p})$) relative to a reference galaxy sample, and an average mass of the host dark matter halos ($M_{halo}$) . For comparison we have also estimated the $w_{p}(r_{p})$ for the full galaxy population and the subset of satellite galaxies. We find that, for central galaxies, both $w_{p}(r_{p})$ and $M_{halo}$ show strongest dependence on $M_{\star}$, and there is no clear dependence on other properties when stellar mass is fixed. This result provides strong support to the previously-adopted assumption that, for central galaxies, stellar mass is the galaxy property that is best indicative of the host dark halo mass. The full galaxy population and the subset of satellites show similar clustering properties in all cases. However, they are similar to the centrals only at high masses ($M_{\star} \geq 10^{11} M_{\odot}$). At low-mass ($M_{\star} \leq 10^{11} M_{\odot}$), the results are different: the $w_{p}(r_{p})$ increases with both $σ$ and g-r when $M_{\star}$ is fixed, and depends very weakly on $M_{\star}$ when $σ_{\star}$ or g-r is fixed. At fixed $M_{star}$, the $μ_{\star}$ shows weak correlations with clustering amplitude (and halo mass for central galaxies). Our results suggest that it is necessary to consider central and satellite galaxies separately when studying the link between galaxies and dark matter halos. (Abridged)

South Galactic Cap u-band Sky Survey (SCUSS): Data Release

The SCUSS is a deep $u$-band imaging survey in the south Galactic cap using the 2.3m Bok telescope. The survey observations were completed in the end of 2013, covering an area of about 5000 square degrees. We release the data in the region with an area of about 4000 deg$^2$ that is mostly covered by the Sloan digital sky survey. The data products contain calibrated single-epoch images, stacked images, photometric catalogs, and a catalog of star proper motions derived by Peng et al, 2015. The median seeing and magnitude limit ($5σ$) are about 2".0 and 23.2 mag, respectively. There are about 8 million objects having measurements of absolute proper motions. All the data and related documentations can be accessed through the SCUSS data release website of \url{http://batc.bao.ac.cn/Uband/data.html}.

The SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Overview and Early Data

The Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) will conduct novel cosmological observations using the BOSS spectrograph at Apache Point Observatory. Observations will be simultaneous with the Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) designed for variability studies and the Spectroscopic Identification of eROSITA Sources (SPIDERS) program designed for studies of X-ray sources. eBOSS will use four different tracers to measure the distance-redshift relation with baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Using more than 250,000 new, spectroscopically confirmed luminous red galaxies at a median redshift z=0.72, we project that eBOSS will yield measurements of $d_A(z)$ to an accuracy of 1.2% and measurements of H(z) to 2.1% when combined with the z>0.6 sample of BOSS galaxies. With ~195,000 new emission line galaxy redshifts, we expect BAO measurements of $d_A(z)$ to an accuracy of 3.1% and H(z) to 4.7% at an effective redshift of z= 0.87. A sample of more than 500,000 spectroscopically-confirmed quasars will provide the first BAO distance measurements over the redshift range 0.9 2.1; these new data will enhance the precision of $d_A(z)$ and H(z) by a factor of 1.44 relative to BOSS. Furthermore, eBOSS will provide improved tests of General Relativity on cosmological scales through redshift-space distortion measurements, improved tests for non-Gaussianity in the primordial density field, and new constraints on the summed mass of all neutrino species. Here, we provide an overview of the cosmological goals, spectroscopic target sample, demonstration of spectral quality from early data, and projected cosmological constraints from eBOSS.

Towards Arbitrary-View Face Alignment by Recommendation Trees

Learning to simultaneously handle face alignment of arbitrary views, e.g. frontal and profile views, appears to be more challenging than we thought. The difficulties lay in i) accommodating the complex appearance-shape relations exhibited in different views, and ii) encompassing the varying landmark point sets due to self-occlusion and different landmark protocols. Most existing studies approach this problem via training multiple viewpoint-specific models, and conduct head pose estimation for model selection. This solution is intuitive but the performance is highly susceptible to inaccurate head pose estimation. In this study, we address this shortcoming through learning an Ensemble of Model Recommendation Trees (EMRT), which is capable of selecting optimal model configuration without prior head pose estimation. The unified framework seamlessly handles different viewpoints and landmark protocols, and it is trained by optimising directly on landmark locations, thus yielding superior results on arbitrary-view face alignment. This is the first study that performs face alignment on the full AFLWdataset with faces of different views including profile view. State-of-the-art performances are also reported on MultiPIE and AFW datasets containing both frontaland profile-view faces.
