Channel Extrapolation for MIMO Systems with the Assistance of Multi-path Information Induced from Channel State Information

Acquiring channel state information (CSI) through traditional methods, such as channel estimation, is increasingly challenging for the emerging sixth generation (6G) mobile networks due to high overhead. To address this issue, channel extrapolation techniques have been proposed to acquire complete CSI from a limited number of known CSIs. To improve extrapolation accuracy, environmental information, such as visual images or radar data, has been utilized, which poses challenges including additional hardware, privacy and multi-modal alignment concerns. To this end, this paper proposes a novel channel extrapolation framework by leveraging environment-related multi-path characteristics induced directly from CSI without integrating additional modalities. Specifically, we propose utilizing the multi-path characteristics in the form of power-delay profile (PDP), which is acquired using a CSI-to-PDP module. CSI-to-PDP module is trained in an AE-based framework by reconstructing the PDPs and constraining the latent low-dimensional features to represent the CSI. We further extract the total power & power-weighted delay of all the identified paths in PDP as the multi-path information. Building on this, we proposed a MAE architecture trained in a self-supervised manner to perform channel extrapolation. Unlike standard MAE approaches, our method employs separate encoders to extract features from the masked CSI and the multi-path information, which are then fused by a cross-attention module. Extensive simulations demonstrate that this framework improves extrapolation performance dramatically, with a minor increase in inference time (around 0.1 ms). Furthermore, our model shows strong generalization capabilities, particularly when only a small portion of the CSI is known, outperforming existing benchmarks.

Time-Scale-Adaptable Spectrum Sharing for Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Networks

Cooperation between satellite and terrestrial wireless networks promises great potential in meeting fast-growing demands for ubiquitous communications coverage. To tackle spectrum scarcity, spectrum sharing is studied for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network where satellite links share the same group of time-slotted sub-carriers with terrestrial links opportunistically. In particular, with coarse network-wide time synchronization, a time-scale-adaptable spectrum sharing framework is proposed based on a satellite-terrestrial cooperation time scale that can be flexibly adjusted according to practical requirements. For generality, it is assumed that both full and partial frequency reuse could be adopted among the base stations (BSs) and satellite selection is supported when multiple satellites are available. Relying on only statistical channel state information (CSI), joint link scheduling and power control are explored to maximize the average sum rate of the network while ensuring quality of service (QoS) for users. To solve the complicated mixed integer programming (MIP) problem, a low-complexity spectrum sharing scheme is presented based on link-feature-sketching-aided hierarchical link clustering and Monte-Carlo-and-successive-approximation-aided transmit power optimization. Simulation results demonstrate that by link feature sketching, diversity of the links brought by the spatial distribution of the users could be well utilized. The proposed scheme promises a significant performance gain even under strict inter-link interference constraints.

Joint Low-Rank and Sparse Bayesian Channel Estimation for Ultra-Massive MIMO Communications

This letter investigates channel estimation for ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. We propose a joint low-rank and sparse Bayesian estimation (LRSBE) algorithm for spatial non-stationary ultra-massive channels by exploiting the low-rankness and sparsity in the beam domain. Specifically, the channel estimation integrates sparse Bayesian learning and soft-threshold gradient descent within the expectation-maximization framework. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art alternatives under different signal-to-noise ratio conditions in terms of estimation accuracy and overall complexity.

Large-Model AI for Near Field Beam Prediction: A CNN-GPT2 Framework for 6G XL-MIMO

The emergence of extremely large-scale antenna arrays (ELAA) in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications, particularly in high-mobility scenarios, highlights the importance of near-field beam prediction. Unlike the conventional far-field assumption, near-field beam prediction requires codebooks that jointly sample the angular and distance domains, which leads to a dramatic increase in pilot overhead. Moreover, unlike the far-field case where the optimal beam evolution is temporally smooth, the optimal near-field beam index exhibits abrupt and nonlinear dynamics due to its joint dependence on user angle and distance, posing significant challenges for temporal modeling. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Convolutional Neural Network-Generative Pre-trained Transformer 2 (CNN-GPT2) based near-field beam prediction framework. Specifically, an uplink pilot transmission strategy is designed to enable efficient channel probing through widebeam analog precoding and frequency-varying digital precoding. The received pilot signals are preprocessed and passed through a CNN-based feature extractor, followed by a GPT-2 model that captures temporal dependencies across multiple frames and directly predicts the near-field beam index in an end-to-end manner.

Exploring the Advantages of Sparse Arrays in Near-Field XL-MIMO Systems: Beam Analysis and EDoF Function

This paper investigates near-field XL-MIMO systems with sparse uniform planar arrays (UPAs). Based on the Green's function-based channel model, the paper derives closed-form expressions for the signal beam power when the distance coordinate or the angular coordinates varies with respective to the focused position. Based on that, closed-form expressions for the lobe length and the suppressing ratio are obtained, indicating that both the distance-focusing property and the grating lobe behavior can be enhanced as the focal distance decreases or the antenna spacing increases. Furthermore, the paper introduces a crucial constraint on system parameters, under which effective degrees-of-freedom (EDoF) of XL-MIMO systems with sparse UPAs can be precisely estimated. Then, the paper proposes an algorithm to obtain a closed-form expression, which can estimate EDoF with high accuracy and low computational complexity. The numerical results verifies the correctness of the main results of this paper.

Enhanced Fingerprint-based Positioning With Practical Imperfections: Deep learning-based approaches

High-precision positioning is vital for cellular networks to support innovative applications such as extended reality, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Existing positioning algorithms using deep learning techniques require vast amounts of labeled data, which are difficult to obtain in real-world cellular environments, and these models often struggle to generalize effectively. To advance cellular positioning techniques, the 2024 Wireless Communication Algorithm Elite Competition as conducted, which provided a dataset from a three-sector outdoor cellular system, incorporating practical challenges such as limited labeled-dataset, dynamic wireless environments within the target and unevenly-spaced anchors, Our team developed three innovative positioning frameworks that swept the top three awards of this competition, namely the semi-supervised framework with consistency, ensemble learning-based algorithm and decoupled mapping heads-based algorithm. Specifically, the semi-supervised framework with consistency effectively generates high-quality pseudo-labels, enlarging the labeled-dataset for model training. The ensemble learning-based algorithm amalgamates the positioning coordinates from models trained under different strategies, effectively combating the dynamic positioning environments. The decoupled mapping heads-based algorithm utilized sector rotation scheme to resolve the uneven-spaced anchor issue. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of our proposed positioning algorithms compared to existing benchmarks in terms of the {90%, 80%, 67%, 50%} percentile and mean distance error.

Enabling 6G Through Multi-Domain Channel Extrapolation: Opportunities and Challenges of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Channel extrapolation has attracted wide attention due to its potential to acquire channel state information (CSI) with high accuracy and minimal overhead. This is becoming increasingly crucial as the sixth-generation (6G) mobile networks aim to support complex scenarios, for example, high-mobility communications utilizing ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies and broad spectrum bands, necessitating multi-domain channel extrapolation. Current research predominantly addresses channel extrapolation within a single domain, lacking a comprehensive approach to multi-domain channel extrapolation. To bridge the gap, we propose the concept of multi-domain channel extrapolation, detailing the essential performance requirements for 6G networks. These include precise channel extrapolation, adaptability to varying scenarios, and manageable computational complexity during both training and inference stages. In light of these requirements, we elaborate the potential and challenges of incorporating generative artificial intelligence (GAI)-based models for effective multi-domain channel extrapolation. Given the ability of the Transformer to capture long-range dependencies and hidden patterns, we propose a novel Transformer encoder-like model by eliminating the positional encoding module and replacing the original multi-head attention with a multilayer perceptron (MLP) for multi-domain channel extrapolation. Simulation results indicate that this model surpasses existing baseline models in terms of extrapolation accuracy and inference speed. Ablation studies further demonstrate the effectiveness of the module design of the proposed design. Finally, we pose several open questions for the development of practical GAI-based multi-domain channel extrapolation models, including the issues of explainability, generalization, and dataset collection.

Double-Target Collaborative Spectrum Sharing for 6G Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Networks with User-Centric Channel Pools

Satellite and terrestrial cellular networks can be integrated together for extended broadband coverage in e.g., maritime communication scenarios, in the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) era. To counter spectrum scarcity, collaborative spectrum sharing is considered for a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network (HSTN) in this paper. With only slowly-varying large-scale channel state information (CSI), joint power and channel allocation is implemented for terrestrial mobile terminals (MTs) which share the same frequency band with the satellite MTs opportunistically. Specially, strict quality service assurance is adopted for terrestrial MTs under the constraint of leakage interference to satellite MTs. With the target of maximizing both the number of served terrestrial MTs and the average sum transmission rate, a double-target spectrum sharing problem is formulated. To solve the complicated mixed integer programming (MIP) problem efficiently, user-centric channel pools are introduced. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed spectrum sharing scheme could achieve a significant performance gain for the HSTN.

A Tutorial on Six-Dimensional Movable Antenna for 6G Networks: Synergizing Positionable and Rotatable Antennas

Six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) is a new and revolutionary technique that fully exploits the wireless channel spatial variations at the transmitter/receiver by flexibly adjusting the three-dimensional (3D) positions and/or 3D rotations of antennas/antenna surfaces (sub-arrays), thereby improving the performance of wireless networks cost-effectively without the need to deploy additional antennas. It is thus expected that the integration of new 6DMAs into future sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks will fundamentally enhance antenna agility and adaptability, and introduce new degrees of freedom (DoFs) for system design. Despite its great potential, 6DMA faces new challenges to be efficiently implemented in wireless networks, including corresponding architectures, antenna position and rotation optimization, channel estimation, and system design from both communication and sensing perspectives. In this paper, we provide a tutorial on 6DMA-enhanced wireless networks to address the above issues by unveiling associated new channel models, hardware implementations and practical position/rotation constraints, as well as various appealing applications in wireless networks. Moreover, we discuss two special cases of 6DMA, namely, rotatable 6DMA with fixed antenna position and positionable 6DMA with fixed antenna rotation, and highlight their respective design challenges and applications. We further present prototypes developed for 6DMA-enhanced communication along with experimental results obtained with these prototypes. Finally, we outline promising directions for further investigation.

CKMDiff: A Generative Diffusion Model for CKM Construction via Inverse Problems with Learned Priors

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is a promising technology to enable environment-aware wireless communications and sensing with greatly enhanced performance, by offering location-specific channel prior information for future wireless networks. One fundamental problem for CKM-enabled wireless systems lies in how to construct high-quality and complete CKM for all locations of interest, based on only limited and noisy on-site channel knowledge data. This problem resembles the long-standing ill-posed inverse problem, which tries to infer from a set of limited and noisy observations the cause factors that produced them. By utilizing the recent advances of solving inverse problems with learned priors using generative artificial intelligence (AI), we propose CKMDiff, a conditional diffusion model that can be applied to perform various tasks for CKM constructions such as denoising, inpainting, and super-resolution, without having to know the physical environment maps or transceiver locations. Furthermore, we propose an environment-aware data augmentation mechanism to enhance the model's ability to learn implicit relations between electromagnetic propagation patterns and spatial-geometric features. Extensive numerical results are provided based on the CKMImageNet and RadioMapSeer datasets, which demonstrate that the proposed CKMDiff achieves state-of-the-art performance, outperforming various benchmark methods.

Low-Complexity Iterative Precoding Design for Near-field Multiuser Systems With Spatial Non-Stationarity

Extremely large antenna arrays (ELAA) are regarded as a promising technology for supporting sixth-generation (6G) networks. However, the large number of antennas significantly increases the computational complexity in precoding design, even for linearly regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. To address this issue, a series of low-complexity iterative precoding are investigated. The main idea of these methods is to avoid matrix inversion of RZF precoding. Specifically, RZF precoding is equivalent to a system of linear equations that can be solved by fast iterative algorithms, such as random Kaczmarz (RK) algorithm. Yet, the performance of RK-based precoding algorithm is limited by the energy distributions of multiple users, which restricts its application in ELAA-assisted systems. To accelerate the RK-based precoding, we introduce the greedy random Kaczmarz (GRK)-based precoding by using the greedy criterion-based selection strategy. To further reduce the complexity of the GRK-based precoding, we propose a visibility region (VR)-based orthogonal GRK (VR-OGRK) precoding that leverages near-field spatial non-stationarity, which is characterized by the concept of VR. Next, by utilizing the information from multiple hyperplanes in each iteration, we extend the GRK-based precoding to the aggregation hyperplane Kaczmarz (AHK)-based pecoding algorithm, which further enhances the convergence rate. Building upon the AHK algorithm, we propose a VR-based orthogonal AHK (VR-OAHK) precoding to further reduce the computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed iterative precoding algorithms are proven to converge to RZF globally at an exponential rate. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms achieve faster convergence and lower computational complexity than benchmark algorithms, and yield very similar performance to the RZF precoding.

This model combines the BELLHOP deterministic model and geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM), which provides higher accuracy and flexibility. Different propagation components in shallow water are classified as D-rays, R-rays and F-rays in the proposed model, where D-rays are modeled by BELLHOP while both R-rays and F-rays are modeled by GBSM. Some important channel statistical properties, including time-frequency correlation function (TF-CF), Doppler power spectrum density (PSD), average Doppler shift, and RMS Doppler spread are derived and simulated. Finally, simulation results illustrate the correctness of the proposed model.

A Novel Non-Stationary Channel Emulator for 6G MIMO Wireless Channels

The performance evaluation of sixth generation (6G) communication systems is anticipated to be a controlled and repeatable process in the lab, which brings up the demand for wireless channel emulators. However, channel emulation for 6G space-time-frequency (STF) non-stationary channels is missing currently. In this paper, a non-stationary multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) that accurately characterizes the channel STF properties is introduced firstly. Then, a subspace-based method is proposed for reconstructing the channel fading obtained from the GBSM and a channel emulator architecture with frequency domain processing is presented for 6G MIMO systems. Moreover, the spatial time-varying channel transfer functions (CTFs) of the channel simulation and the channel emulation are compared and analyzed. The Doppler power spectral density (PSD) and delay PSD are further derived and compared between the channel model simulation and subspace-based emulation. The results demonstrate that the proposed channel emulator is capable of reproducing the non-stationary channel characteristics.

Wireless Channel Measurements and Characterization in Industrial IoT Scenarios

Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) communication technologies hold significant potential for realizing the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). In this paper, both Single-Input Single-Output (SISO) and polarized Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel measurements are conducted in an IIoT scenario at the less congested Wi-Fi band, i.e., 5.5~GHz. The purpose is to investigate wireless characteristics of communications between access points and terminals mounted on automated guided vehicles as well as those surrounding manufacturing areas. For SISO channel measurements, statistical properties including the delay Power Spectral Density (PSD), path loss, shadowing fading, delay spread, excess delay, K-factor, and amplitude distribution of small-scale fading are analyzed and compared with those observed in an office scenario. For MIMO channel measurements, results show that there are multiple Dense Multipath Component (DMC) processes in the delay PSD. An estimation algorithm based on the algorithm for a single DMC process is proposed to effectively process the multi-processes data. Moreover, delay, angular, power, and polarization properties of DMCs are investigated and compared with those of specular multipath components. Furthermore, effects of DMCs on Singular Values (SVs) and channel capacities are explored. Ignoring DMCs can overestimate SVs and underestimate channel capacities.

A 3D Continuous-Space Electromagnetic Channel Model for 6G Tri-Polarized Multi-user Communications

It is envisioned that the sixth generation (6G) and beyond 6G (B6G) wireless communication networks will enable global coverage in space, air, ground, and sea. In this case, both base stations and users can be mobile and will tend to move continuously in three-dimensional (3D) space. Therefore, obtaining channel state information (CSI) in 3D continuous-space is crucial for the design and performance evaluation of future 6G and B6G wireless systems. On the other hand, new 6G technologies such as integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) will also require prior knowledge of CSI in 3D continuous-space. In this paper, a 3D continuous-space electromagnetic channel model is proposed for tri-polarized multi-user communications, taking into account scatterers and spherical wavefronts. Scattered fields are calculated using the method of moments (MoM) with high accuracy. Spherical wave functions are utilized to decompose the dyadic Green's functions that connect the transmitted source currents and the received electric fields. Simulation results demonstrate that transmit power, apertures, scatterers, and sample intervals have significant impacts on statistical properties and channel capacities, providing insights into the performance of continuous-space electromagnetic channel models and the design of future wireless systems.
