Hints of Gravitational Ergodicity: Berry's Ensemble and the Universality of the Semi-Classical Page Curve

Recent developments on black holes have shown that a unitarity-compatible Page curve can be obtained from an ensemble-averaged semi-classical approximation. In this paper, we emphasize (1) that this peculiar manifestation of unitarity is not specific to black holes, and (2) that it can emerge from a single realization of an underlying unitary theory. To make things explicit, we consider a hard sphere gas leaking slowly from a small box into a bigger box. This is a quantum chaotic system in which we expect to see the Page curve in the full unitary description, while semi-classically, eigenstates are expected to behave as though they live in Berry's ensemble. We reproduce the unitarity-compatible Page curve of this system, semi-classically. The computation has structural parallels to replica wormholes, relies crucially on ensemble averaging at each epoch, and reveals the interplay between the multiple time-scales in the problem. Working with the ensemble averaged $state$ rather than the entanglement entropy, we can also engineer an information "paradox". Our system provides a concrete example in which the ensemble underlying the semi-classical Page curve is an ergodic proxy for a time average, and not an explicit average over many theories. The questions we address here are logically independent of the existence of horizons, so we expect that semi-classical gravity should also be viewed in a similar light.

Critical Islands

We discuss a doubly-holographic prescription for black holes in braneworlds with a vanishing cosmological constant. It involves calculating Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces in AdS black funnel spacetimes attached to braneworld black holes in the $ critical$ Randall-Sundrum II model. Critical braneworlds have the virtue of having massless gravitons. Our approach should be useful when the braneworld is a cosmological black hole interacting with deconfined, large-$N$ matter. In higher dimensions, explicit funnel metrics will have to be constructed numerically -- but based on the general structure of the geometry, we present a natural guess for where one might find the semi-classical island. In a 3-dimensional example where a toy analytic black funnel is known, we can check our guess by direct calculation. We argue that this resolves a version of the information paradox in these braneworld systems, by finding strong evidence for "cosmological islands". Comoving Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces and associated UV cut-offs on the brane, play natural roles.

Is there an early Universe solution to Hubble tension?

We consider a low redshift $(z<0.7)$ cosmological dataset comprising megamasers, cosmic chronometers, type Ia SNe and BAO, which we bin according to their redshift. For each bin, we read the value of $H_0$ by fitting directly to the flat $Λ$CDM model. Doing so, we find that $H_0$ descends with redshift, allowing one to fit a line with a \textit{non-zero} slope of statistical significance $2.1 \, σ$. Our analysis rests on the use of cosmic chronometers to break a degeneracy in BAO data and it will be imperative to revisit this feature as data improves. Nevertheless, our results provide the first independent indication of the descending trend reported by the H0LiCOW collaboration. If substantiated going forward, early Universe solutions to the Hubble tension will struggle explaining this trend.

Cosmic Censorship of Trans-Planckian Field Ranges in Gravitational Collapse

A classical solution where the (scalar) field value moves by an ${\cal O}(1)$ range in Planck units is believed to signal the breakdown of Effective Field Theory (EFT). One heuristic argument for this is that such a field will have enough energy to be inside its own Schwarzschild radius, and will result in collapse. In this paper, we consider an inverse problem: what kind of field ranges arise during the gravitational collapse of a classical field? Despite the fact that collapse has been studied for almost a hundred years, most of the discussion is phrased in terms of fluid stress tensors, and not fields. An exception is the scalar collapse made famous by Choptuik. We re-consider Choptuik-like systems, but with the emphasis now on the evolution of the scalar. We give strong evidence that generic spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field leads to super-Planckian field movement. But we also note that in every such supercritical collapse scenario, the large field range is hidden behind an apparent horizon. We also discuss how the familiar perfect fluid models for collapse like Oppenheimer-Snyder and Vaidya should be viewed in light of our results.

A Hairy Box in Three Dimensions

In this short note, we consider the phases of gravity coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field and charged scalar in 2+1 dimensions without a cosmological constant, but with box boundary conditions. This is an extension of the results in arXiv:1609.01208, but unlike in higher dimensions, here the physics has sharp differences from the corresponding AdS problem. This is because Einstein-Maxwell black holes cease to exist when the cosmological constant goes to zero. We show that hairy black holes also do not exist in the flat 2+1 dimensional box under some assumptions, but hairy boson stars do. There is a second order phase transition from the empty box to the boson star phase at a charge density larger than some critical value. We find various new features in the phase diagram which were absent in 3+1 dimensions. Our explicit calculations assume radial symmetry, but we also note that the absence of black holes is more general. It is a trivial consequence of a 2+1 dimensional version of Hawking's horizon topology argument from 3+1 dimensions, and relies on the Dominant Energy Condition, which is violated when (eg.) there is a negative cosmological constant.

Swampland, Axions and Minimal Warm Inflation

Warm inflation has been noted previously as a possible way to implement inflationary models compatible with the dS swampland bounds. But often in these discussions the heat bath dynamics is kept largely unspecified. We point out that the recently introduced Minimal Warm Inflation of arXiv:1910.07525, where an axionic coupling of the inflaton leads to an explicit model for the thermal bath, yields models of inflation that can easily fit cosmological observations while satisfying de Sitter swampland bounds, as well as the swampland distance bound and trans-Planckian censorship.

Page Curve and the Information Paradox in Flat Space

Asymptotic Causal Diamonds (ACDs) are a natural flat space analogue of AdS causal wedges, and it has been argued previously that they may be useful for understanding bulk locality in flat space holography. In this paper, we use ACD-inspired ideas to argue that there exist natural candidates for Quantum Extremal Surfaces (QES) and entanglement wedges in flat space, anchored to the conformal boundary. When there is a holographic screen at finite radius, we can also associate entanglement wedges and entropies to screen sub-regions, with the system naturally coupled to a sink. The screen and the boundary provide two complementary ways of formulating the information paradox. We explain how they are related and show that in both formulations, the flat space entanglement wedge undergoes a phase transition at the Page time in the background of an evaporating Schwarzschild black hole. Our results closely parallel recent observations in AdS, and reproduce the Page curve. That there is a variation of the argument that can be phrased directly in flat space without reliance on AdS, is a strong indication that entanglement wedge phase transitions may be key to the information paradox in flat space as well. Along the way, we give evidence that the entanglement entropy of an ACD is a well-defined, and likely instructive, quantity. We further note that the picture of the sink we present here may have an understanding in terms of sub-matrix deconfinement in a large-$N$ setting.

A Generalization of Gravity

I consider theories of gravity built not just from the metric and affine connection, but also other (possibly higher rank) symmetric tensor(s). The Lagrangian densities are scalars built from them, and the volume forms are related to Cayley's hyperdeterminants. The resulting diff-invariant actions give rise to geometric theories that go beyond the metric paradigm (even metric-less theories are possible), and contain Einstein gravity as a special case. Examples contain theories with generalizeations of Riemannian geometry. The 0-tensor case is related to dilaton gravity. These theories can give rise to new types of spontaneous Lorentz breaking and might be relevant for "dark" sector cosmology.

A General Prescription for Semi-Classical Holography

We present a version of holographic correspondence where bulk solutions with sources localized on the holographic screen are the key objects of interest, and not bulk solutions defined by their boundary values on the screen. We can use this to calculate semi-classical holographic correlators in fairly general spacetimes, including flat space with timelike screens. We find that our approach reduces to the standard Dirichlet-like approach, when restricted to the boundary of AdS. But in more general settings, the analytic continuation of the Dirichlet Green function does not lead to a Feynman propagator in the bulk. Our prescription avoids this problem. Furthermore, in Lorentzian signature we find an additional homogeneous mode. This is a natural proxy for the AdS normalizable mode and allows us to do bulk reconstruction. We also find that the extrapolate and differential dictionaries match. Perturbatively adding bulk interactions to these discussions is straightforward. We conclude by elevating some of these ideas into a general philosophy about mechanics and field theory. We argue that localizing sources on suitable submanifolds can be an instructive alternative formalism to treating these submanifolds as boundaries.

Machine Learning ${\cal N}=8, D=5$ Gauged Supergravity

Type IIB string theory on a 5-sphere gives rise to ${\cal N}=8, SO(6)$ gauged supergravity in five dimensions. Motivated by the fact that this is the context of the most widely studied example of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we undertake an investigation of its critical points. The scalar manifold is an $E_{6(6)}/USp(8)$ coset, and the challenge is that it is 42-dimensional. We take a Machine Learning approach to the problem using TensorFlow, and this results in a substantial increase in the number of known critical points. Our list of 32 critical points contains all five of the previously known ones, including an ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric point identified by Khavaev, Pilch and Warner.

de Sitter, $α'$-Corrections & Duality Invariant Cosmology

Demanding $O(d,d)$-duality covariance, Hohm and Zwiebach have written down the action for the most general cosmology involving the metric, $b$-field and dilaton, to all orders in $α'$ in the string frame. Remarkably, for an FRW metric-dilaton ansatz the equations of motion turn out to be quite simple, except for the presence of an unknown function of a single variable. If this unknown function satisfies some simple properties, it allows de Sitter solutions in the string frame. In this note, we write down the Einstein frame analogues of these equations, and make some observations that make the system tractable. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that a necessary condition for de Sitter solutions to exist is that the unknown function must satisfy a certain second order non-linear ODE. The solutions of the ODE do not have a simple power series expansion compatible with the leading supergravity expectation. We discuss possible interpretations of this fact. After emphasizing that all (potential) string and Einstein frame de Sitter solutions have a running dilaton, we write down the most general cosmologies with a constant dilaton in string/Einstein frame: these have power law scale factors.

Hairy Black Holes in a Box

We do a systematic study of the phases of gravity coupled to an electromagnetic field and charged scalar in flat space, with box boundary conditions. The scalar-less box has previously been investigated by Braden, Brown, Whiting and York (and others) before AdS/CFT and we elaborate and extend their results in a language more familiar from holography. The phase diagram of the system is analogous to that of AdS black holes, but we emphasize the differences and explain their origin. Once the scalar is added, we show that the system admits both boson stars as well as hairy black holes as solutions, providing yet another way to evade flat space no-hair theorems. Furthermore both these solutions can exist as stable phases in regions of the phase diagram. The final picture of the phases that emerges is strikingly similar to that found recently for holographic superconductors in global AdS, arXiv: 1602.07211. Our construction lays bare certain previously unnoticed subtleties associated to the definition quasi-local charges for gravitating scalar fields in finite regions.

Bounds on Slow Roll at the Boundary of the Landscape

We present strong evidence that the tree level slow roll bounds of arXiv:1807.05193 and arXiv:1810.05506 are valid, even when the tachyon has overlap with the volume of the cycle wrapped by the orientifold. This extends our previous results in the volume-dilaton subspace to a semi-universal modulus. Emboldened by this and other observations, we investigate what it means to have a bound on (generalized) slow roll in a multi-field landscape. We argue that for $any$ point $ϕ_0$ in an $N$-dimensional field space with $V(ϕ_0) > 0$, there exists a path of monotonically decreasing potential energy to a point $ϕ_1$ within a path length $\lesssim {\cal O}(1)$, such that $\sqrt{N}\ln \frac{V(ϕ_1)}{V(ϕ_0)} \lesssim - {\cal O} (1)$. The previous de Sitter swampland bounds are specific ways to realize this stringent non-local constraint on field space, but we show that it also incorporates (for example) the scenario where both slow roll parameters are intermediate-valued and the Universe undergoes a small number of e-folds, as in the Type IIA set up of arXiv:1310.8300. Our observations are in the context of tree level constructions, so we take the conservative viewpoint that it is a characterization of the classical "boundary" of the string landscape. To emphasize this, we argue that these bounds can be viewed as a type of Dine-Seiberg statement.

Massive Scattering Amplitudes in Six Dimensions

We show that a natural spinor-helicity formalism that can describe massive scattering amplitudes exists in $D=6$ dimensions. This is arranged by having helicity spinors carry an index in the Dirac spinor {\bf 4} of the massive little group, $SO(5) \sim Sp(4)$. In the high energy limit, two separate kinds of massless helicity spinors emerge as required for consistency with arXiv:0902.0981, with indices in the two $SU(2)$'s of the massless little group $SO(4)$. The tensors of ${\bf 4}$ lead to particles with arbitrary spin, and using these and demanding consistent factorization, we can fix $3-$ and $4-$point tree amplitudes of arbitrary masses and spins: we provide examples. We discuss the high energy limit of scattering amplitudes and the Higgs mechanism in this language, and make some preliminary observations about massive BCFW recursion.

Exact Solution of a Strongly Coupled Gauge Theory in 0+1 Dimensions

Gauged tensor models are a class of strongly coupled quantum mechanical theories. We present the exact analytic solution of a specific example of such a theory: namely the smallest colored tensor model due to Gurau and Witten that exhibits non-linearities. We find explicit analytic expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenstates, and the former agree precisely with previous numerical results on (a subset of) eigenvalues of the ungauged theory. The physics of the spectrum, despite the smallness of $N$, exhibits rudimentary signatures of chaos. This Letter is a summary of our main results: the gory details will appear in a companion paper.

Complete Solution of a Gauged Tensor Model

Building on a strategy introduced in arXiv:1706.05364, we present exact analytic expressions for all the singlet eigenstates and eigenvalues of the simplest non-linear ($n=2, d=3$) gauged Gurau-Witten tensor model. This solves the theory completely. The ground state eigenvalue is $-2\sqrt{14}$ in suitable conventions. This matches the result obtained for the ground state energy in the ungauged model, via brute force diagonalization on a computer. We find that the leftover degeneracies in the gauged theory, are only partially accounted for by its known discrete symmetries, indicating the existence of previously unidentified "hidden" global symmetries in the system. We discuss the spectral form factor, the beginnings of chaos, and the distinction between theories with $SO(n)$ and $O(n)$ gaugings. Our results provide the complete analytic solution of a non-linear gauge theory in 0+1 dimensions, albeit for a specific value of $N$. A summary of the main results in this paper were presented in the companion letter arXiv:1802.02502.

(Anti-)Symmetrizing Wave Functions

The construction of fully (anti-)symmetric states with many particles, when the single particle state carries multiple quantum numbers, is a problem that seems to have not been systematically addressed in the literature. A quintessential example is the construction of ground state baryon wave functions where the color singlet condition reduces the problem to just two (flavor and spin) quantum numbers. In this paper, we address the general problem by noting that it can be re-interpreted as an eigenvalue equation, and provide a formalism that applies to generic number of particles and generic number of quantum numbers. As an immediate result, we find a complete solution to the two quantum number case, from which the baryon wave function problem with arbitrary number of flavors follows. As a more elaborate illustration that reveals complications not visible in the two quantum number case, we present the complete class of states possible for a system of five fermionic particles with three quantum numbers each. Our formalism makes systematic use of properties of the symmetric group and Young tableaux. Even though our motivations to consider this question have their roots in SYK-like tensor models and holography, the problem and its solution should have broader applications.

Dark Matter from a Dark Connection

In the first part of this note, we observe that a non-Riemannian piece in the affine connection (a "dark connection") leads to an algebraically determined, conserved, symmetric 2-tensor in the Einstein field equations that is a natural dark matter candidate. The only other effect it has, is through its coupling to standard model fermions via covariant derivatives. If the local dark matter density is the result of a background classical dark connection, these Yukawa-like mass corrections are minuscule ($\sim 10^{-31}$ eV for terrestrial fermions) and {\em none} of the tests of general relativity or the equivalence principle are affected. In the second part of the note, we give dynamics to the dark connection and show how it can be re-interpreted in terms of conventional dark matter particles. The simplest way to do this is to treat it as a composite field involving scalars or vectors. The (pseudo-)scalar model naturally has a perturbative shift-symmetry and leads to versions of the Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) scenario that has recently become popular (eg., arXiv:1610.08297) as an alternative to WIMPs. A vector model with a ${\cal Z}_2$-parity falls into the Planckian Interacting Dark Matter (PIDM) paradigm, introduced in arXiv:1511.03278. It is possible to construct versions of these theories that yield the correct relic density, fit with inflation, and are falsifiable in the next round of CMB experiments. Our work is an explicit demonstration that the meaningful distinction is not between gravity modification and dark matter, but between theories with extra fields and those without.
