Bounds on Slow Roll and the de Sitter Swampland

The recently introduced swampland criterion for de Sitter (arXiv:1806.08362) can be viewed as a (hierarchically large) bound on the smallness of the slow roll parameter $ε_V$. This leads us to consider the other slow roll parameter $η_V$ more closely, and we are lead to conjecture that the bound is not necessarily on $ε_V$, but on slow roll itself. A natural refinement of the de Sitter swampland conjecture is therefore that slow roll is violated at ${\cal O}(1)$ in Planck units in any UV complete theory. A corollary is that $ε_V$ need not necessarily be ${\cal O}(1)$, if $η_V \lesssim -{\cal O}(1)$ holds. We consider various tachyonic tree level constructions of de Sitter in IIA/IIB string theory (as well as closely related models of inflation), which superficially violate arXiv:1806.08362, and show that they are consistent with this refined version of the bound. The phrasing in terms of slow roll makes it plausible why both versions of the conjecture run into trouble when the number of e-folds during inflation is high. We speculate that one way to evade the bound could be to have a large number of fields, like in $N$-flation.

On the KKLT Goldstino

We construct general asymptotically Klebanov-Strassler solutions of a five dimensional $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_{2R}$ truncation of IIB supergravity on $ T^{1,1} $, that break supersymmetry. This generalizes results in the literature for the $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times \mathbb{Z}_2\times U(1)_R$ case, to a truncation that is general enough to capture the deformation of the conifold in the IR. We observe that there are only two SUSY-breaking modes even in this generalized set up, and by holographically computing Ward identities, we confirm that only one of them corresponds to spontaneous breaking: this is the mode triggered by smeared anti-D3 branes at the tip of the warped throat. Along the way, we address some aspects of the holographic computation of one-point functions of marginal and relevant operators in the cascading gauge theory. Our results strengthen the evidence that {\it if} the KKLT construction is meta-stable, it is indeed a spontaneously SUSY-broken (and therefore bona fide) vacuum of string theory.

Circuit Complexity in Fermionic Field Theory

We define and calculate versions of complexity for free fermionic quantum field theories in 1+1 and 3+1 dimensions, adopting Nielsen's geodesic perspective in the space of circuits. We do this both by discretizing and identifying appropriate classes of Bogoliubov-Valatin transformations, and also directly in the continuum by defining squeezing operators and their generalizations. As a closely related problem, we consider cMERA tensor networks for fermions: viewing them as paths in circuit space, we compute their path lengths. Certain ambiguities that arise in some of these results because of cut-off dependence are discussed.

Contrasting SYK-like Models

We contrast some aspects of various SYK-like models with large-$N$ melonic behavior. First, we note that ungauged tensor models can exhibit symmetry breaking, even though these are 0+1 dimensional theories. Related to this, we show that when gauged, some of them admit no singlets, and are anomalous. The uncolored Majorana tensor model with even $N$ is a simple case where gauge singlets can exist in the spectrum. We outline a strategy for solving for the singlet spectrum, taking advantage of the results in arXiv:1706.05364, and reproduce the singlet states expected in $N=2$. In the second part of the paper, we contrast the random matrix aspects of some ungauged tensor models, the original SYK model, and a model due to Gross and Rosenhaus. The latter, even though disorder averaged, shows parallels with the Gurau-Witten model. In particular, the two models fall into identical Andreev ensembles as a function of $N$. In an appendix, we contrast the (expected) spectra of AdS$_2$ quantum gravity, SYK and SYK-like tensor models, and the zeros of the Riemann Zeta function.

Contractions from Grading

We note that large classes of contractions of algebras that arise in physics can be understood purely algebraically, via identifying appropriate $\mathbb{Z}_m$-gradings (and their generalizations) on the parent algebra. This includes various types of flat space/Carroll limits of finite and infinite dimensional (A)dS algebras, as well as Galilean and Galilean Conformal algebras. Our observations can be regarded as providing a natural context for the Grassmann approach of arXiv:1312.2941. We also introduce a related notion, which we call partial grading, that arises naturally in this context.

Gauging Away a Big Bang

We argue that in the tensionless phase of string theory where the stringy gauge symmetries are unbroken, (at least some) cosmological singularities can be understood as gauge artefacts. We present two conceptually related, but distinct, pieces of evidence: one relying on spacetime and the other on worldsheet.

Robin Gravity

We write down a Robin boundary term for general relativity. The construction relies on the Neumann result of arXiv:1605.01603 in an essential way. This is unlike in mechanics and (polynomial) field theory, where two formulations of the Robin problem exist: one with Dirichlet as the natural limiting case, and another with Neumann.

Towards a Finite-$N$ Hologram

We suggest that holographic tensor models related to SYK are viable candidates for exactly (ie., non-perturbatively in $N$) solvable holographic theories. The reason is that in these theories, the Hilbert space is a spinor representation, and the Hamiltonian (at least in some classes) can be arranged to commute with the Clifford level. This makes the theory solvable level by level. We demonstrate this for the specific case of the uncolored $O(n)^3$ tensor model with arbitrary even $n$, and reduce the question of determining the spectrum and eigenstates to an algebraic equation relating Young tableaux. Solving this reduced problem is conceptually trivial and amounts to matching the representations on either side, as we demonstrate explicitly at low levels. At high levels, representations become bigger, but should still be tractable. None of our arguments require any supersymmetry.

Random Matrices and Holographic Tensor Models

We further explore the connection between holographic $O(n)$ tensor models and random matrices. First, we consider the simplest non-trivial uncolored tensor model and show that the results for the density of states, level spacing and spectral form factor are qualitatively identical to the colored case studied in arXiv:1612.06330. We also explain an overall 16-fold degeneracy by identifying various symmetries, some of which were unavailable in SYK and the colored models. Secondly, and perhaps more interestingly, we systematically identify the Spectral Mirror Symmetry and the Time-Reversal Symmetry of both the colored and uncolored models for all values of $n$, and use them to identify the Andreev ensembles that control their random matrix behavior. We find that the ensembles that arise exhibit a refined version of Bott periodicity in $n$.

Chiral Higher Spin Gravity

We construct a candidate for the most general chiral higher spin theory with AdS$_3$ boundary conditions. In the Chern-Simons language, on the left it has the Drinfeld-Sokolov reduced form, but on the right all charges and chemical potentials are turned on. Altogether (for the spin-3 case) these are $19$ functions. Despite this, we show that the resulting metric has the form of the "most general" AdS$_3$ boundary conditions discussed by Grumiller and Riegler. The asymptotic symmetry algebra is a product of a $\mathcal{W}_3$ algebra on the left and an affine $sl(3)_k$ current algebra on the right, as desired. The metric and higher spin fields depend on all the $19$ functions. We compare our work with previous results in the literature.

Quantum Chaos and Holographic Tensor Models

A class of tensor models were recently outlined as potentially calculable examples of holography: their perturbative large-$N$ behavior is similar to the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, but they are fully quantum mechanical (in the sense that there is no quenched disorder averaging). These facts make them intriguing tentative models for quantum black holes. In this note, we explicitly diagonalize the simplest non-trivial Gurau-Witten tensor model and study its spectral and late-time properties. We find parallels to (a single sample of) SYK where some of these features were recently attributed to random matrix behavior and quantum chaos. In particular, after a running time average, the spectral form factor exhibits striking qualitative similarities to SYK. But we also observe that even though the spectrum has a unique ground state, it has a huge (quasi-?)degeneracy of intermediate energy states, not seen in SYK. If one ignores the delta function due to the degeneracies however, there is level repulsion in the unfolded spacing distribution hinting chaos. Furthermore, the spectrum has gaps and is not (linearly) rigid. The system also has a spectral mirror symmetry which we trace back to the presence of a unitary operator with which the Hamiltonian anticommutes. We use it to argue that to the extent that the model exhibits random matrix behavior, it is controlled not by the Dyson ensembles, but by the BDI (chiral orthogonal) class in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification.

A Neumann Boundary Term for Gravity

The Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) boundary term makes the Dirichlet problem for gravity well defined, but no such general term seems to be known for Neumann boundary conditions. In this paper, we view Neumann {\em not} as fixing the normal derivative of the metric ("velocity") at the boundary, but as fixing the functional derivative of the action with respect to the boundary metric ("momentum"). This leads directly to a new boundary term for gravity: the trace of the extrinsic curvature with a specific dimension-dependent coefficient. In three dimensions this boundary term reduces to a "one-half" GHY term noted in the literature previously, and we observe that our action translates precisely to the Chern-Simons action with no extra boundary terms. In four dimensions the boundary term vanishes, giving a natural Neumann interpretation to the standard Einstein-Hilbert action without boundary terms. We argue that in light of AdS/CFT, ours is a natural approach for defining a "microcanonical" path integral for gravity in the spirit of the (pre-AdS/CFT) work of Brown and York.

An Alternate Path Integral for Quantum Gravity

We define a (semi-classical) path integral for gravity with Neumann boundary conditions in $D$ dimensions, and show how to relate this new partition function to the usual picture of Euclidean quantum gravity. We also write down the action in ADM Hamiltonian formulation and use it to reproduce the entropy of black holes and cosmological horizons. A comparison between the (background-subtracted) covariant and Hamiltonian ways of semi-classically evaluating this path integral in flat space reproduces the generalized Smarr formula and the first law. This "Neumann ensemble" perspective on gravitational thermodynamics is parallel to the canonical (Dirichlet) ensemble of Gibbons-Hawking and the microcanonical approach of Brown-York.

A Dynamical Boundary for Anti-de Sitter Space

We argue that a natural boundary condition for gravity in asymptotically AdS spaces is to hold the {\em renormalized} boundary stress tensor density fixed, instead of the boundary metric. This leads to a well-defined variational problem, as well as new counter-terms and a finite on-shell action. We elaborate this in various (even and odd) dimensions in the language of holographic renormalization. Even though the {\em form} of the new renormalized action is distinct from the standard one, once the cut-off is taken to infinity, their {\em values} on classical solutions coincide when the trace anomaly vanishes. For AdS$_4$, we compute the ADM form of this renormalized action and show in detail how the correct thermodynamics of Kerr-AdS black holes emerge. We comment on the possibility of a consistent quantization with our boundary conditions when the boundary is dynamical, and make a connection to the results of Compere and Marolf. The difference between our approach and microcanonical-like ensembles in standard AdS/CFT is emphasized.

Phases of Global AdS Black Holes

We study the phases of gravity coupled to a charged scalar and gauge field in an asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetime ($AdS_4$) in the grand canonical ensemble. For the conformally coupled scalar, an intricate phase diagram is charted out between the four relevant solutions: global AdS, boson star, Reissner-Nordstrom black hole and the hairy black hole. The nature of the phase diagram undergoes qualitative changes as the charge of the scalar is changed, which we discuss. We also discuss the new features that arise in the extremal limit.

$ε$-Expansions Near Three Dimensions from Conformal Field Theory

We formally extend the CFT techniques introduced in arXiv:1505.00963, to $ϕ^{\frac{2d_0}{d_0-2}}$ theory in $d=d_0-ε$ dimensions and use it to compute anomalous dimensions near $d_0=3, 4$ in a unified manner. We also do a similar analysis of the $O(N)$ model in three dimensions by developing a recursive combinatorial approach for OPE contractions. Our results match precisely with low loop perturbative computations. Finally, using 3-point correlators in the CFT, we comment on why the $ϕ^3$ theory in $d_0=6$ is qualitatively different.

3D Gravity, Chern-Simons and Higher Spins: A Mini Introduction

These are notes of introductory lectures on (a) elements of 2+1 dimensional gravity, (b) some aspects of its relation to Chern-Simons theory, (c) its generalization to couple higher spins, and (d) cosmic singularity resolution as an application in the context of flat space higher spin theory. A knowledge of the Einstein-Hilbert action, classical non-Abelian gauge theory and some (negotiable amount of) maturity are the only pre-requisites.

A Note on D1-D5 Entropy and Geometric Quantization

We quantize the space of 2-charge fuzzballs in IIB supergravity on $K3$. The resulting entropy precisely matches the D1-D5 black hole entropy, including a specific numerical coefficient. A partial match (ie., a smaller coefficient) was found by Rychkov a decade ago using the Lunin-Mathur subclass of solutions - we use a simple observation to generalize his approach to the full moduli space of $K3$ fuzzballs, filling a small gap in the literature.
