A Hidden Symmetry of AdS Resonances

Recent investigations have revealed powerful selection rules for resonant energy transfer between modes of non-linear perturbations in global anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. It is likely that these selection rules are due to the highly symmetric nature of the underlying AdS background, though the precise relation has remained unclear. In this article, we demonstrate that the equation satisfied by the scalar field mode functions in AdS(d+1) has a hidden SU(d) symmetry, and explicitly specify the multiplets of this SU(d) symmetry furnished by the mode functions. We also comment on the role this structure might play in explaining the selection rules.

AdS (In)stability: Lessons From The Scalar Field

We argued in arXiv:1408.0624 that the quartic scalar field in AdS has features that could be instructive for answering the gravitational stability question of AdS. Indeed, the conserved charges identified there have recently been observed in the full gravity theory as well. In this paper, we continue our investigation of the scalar field in AdS and provide evidence that in the Two-Time Formalism (TTF), even for initial conditions that are far from quasi-periodicity, the energy in the higher modes at late times is exponentially suppressed in the mode number. Based on this and some related observations, we argue that there is no thermalization in the scalar TTF model within time-scales that go as $\sim 1/ε^2$, where $ε$ measures the initial amplitude (with only low-lying modes excited). It is tempting to speculate that the result holds also for AdS collapse.

Strings vs Spins on the Null Orbifold

We study the null orbifold singularity in 2+1 d flat space higher spin theory as well as string theory. Using the Chern-Simons formulation of 2+1 d Einstein gravity, we first observe that despite the singular nature of this geometry, the eigenvalues of its Chern-Simons holonomy are trivial. Next, we construct a resolution of the singularity in higher spin theory: a Kundt spacetime with vanishing scalar curvature invariants. We also point out that the UV divergences previously observed in the 2-to-2 tachyon tree level string amplitude on the null orbifold do not arise in the $α^\prime\to \infty$ limit. We find all the divergences of the amplitude and demonstrate that the ones remaining in the tensionless limit are physical IR-type divergences. We conclude with a discussion on the meaning and limitations of higher spin (cosmological) singularity resolution and its potential connection to string theory.

Low Tension Strings on a Cosmological Singularity

It has recently been argued that the singularity of the Milne orbifold can be resolved in higher spin theories. In string theory scattering amplitudes, however, the Milne singularity gives rise to ultraviolet divergences that signal uncontrolled backreaction. Since string theory in the low tension limit is expected to be a higher spin theory (although precise proposals only exist in special cases), we investigate what happens to these scattering amplitudes in the low tension limit. We point out that the known problematic ultraviolet divergences disappear in this limit. In addition we systematically identify all divergences of the simplest 2-to-2 string scattering amplitude on the Milne orbifold, and argue that the divergences that survive in the low tension limit have sensible infrared interpretations.

A Stochasticity Threshold in Holography and and the Instability of AdS

We give strong numerical evidence that a self-interacting probe scalar field in AdS, with only a few modes turned on initially, will undergo fast thermalization only if it is above a certain energetic threshold. Below the threshold the energy stays close to constant in a few modes for a very long time instead of cascading quickly. This indicates the existance of a Strong Stochasticity Threshold (SST) in holography. The idea of SST is familiar from certain statistical mechanical systems, and we suggest that it exists also in AdS gravity. This would naturally reconcile the generic non-linear instability of AdS observed by Bizon and Rostworowski, with the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou-like quasi-periodocity noticed recently for some classes of initial conditions. We show that our simple set-up captures many of the relevant features of the full gravity-scalar system.

Desingularization of the Milne Universe

Resolution of cosmological singularities is an important problem in any full theory of quantum gravity. The Milne orbifold is a cosmology with a big-bang/big-crunch singularity, but being a quotient of flat space it holds potential for resolution in string theory. It is known however, that some perturbative string amplitudes diverge in the Milne geometry. Here we show that flat space higher spin theories can effect a simple resolution of the Milne singularity when one embeds the latter in 2+1 dimensions. We explain how to reconcile this with the expectation that non-perturbative string effects are required for resolving Milne. Along the way, we introduce a Grassmann realization of the İnönü-Wigner contraction to export much of the AdS technology to our flat space computation.

Higher Spin Resolution of a Toy Big Bang

Diffeomorphisms preserve spacetime singularities, whereas higher spin symmetries need not. Since three dimensional de Sitter space has quotients that have big-bang/big-crunch singularities and since dS_3-gravity can be written as an SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory, we investigate SL(3,C) Chern-Simons theory as a higher-spin context in which these singularities might get resolved. As in the case of higher spin black holes in AdS_3, the solutions are invariantly characterized by their holonomies. We show that the dS_3 quotient singularity can be de-singularized by an SL(3,C) gauge transformation that preserves the holonomy: this is a higher spin resolution the cosmological singularity. Our work deals exclusively with the bulk theory, and is independent of the subtleties involved in defining a CFT_2 dual to dS_3 in the sense of dS/CFT.

A Grassmann Path From AdS_3 to Flat Space

We show that interpreting the inverse AdS_3 radius 1/l as a Grassmann variable results in a formal map from gravity in AdS_3 to gravity in flat space. The underlying reason for this is the fact that ISO(2,1) is the Inonu-Wigner contraction of SO(2,2). We show how this works for the Chern-Simons actions, demonstrate how the general (Banados) solution in AdS_3 maps to the general flat space solution, and how the Killing vectors, charges and the Virasoro algebra in the Brown-Henneaux case map to the corresponding quantities in the BMS_3 case. Our results straightforwardly generalize to the higher spin case: the recently constructed flat space higher spin theories emerge automatically in this approach from their AdS counterparts. We conclude with a discussion of singularity resolution in the BMS gauge as an application.

Higher Spin Cosmology

We construct cosmological solutions of higher spin gravity in 2+1 dimensional de Sitter space. We show that a consistent thermodynamics can be obtained for their horizons by demanding appropriate holonomy conditions. This is equivalent to demanding the integrability of the Euclidean boundary CFT partition function, and reduces to Gibbons-Hawking thermodynamics in the spin-2 case. By using a prescription of Maldacena, we relate the thermodynamics of these solutions to those of higher spin black holes in AdS_3.

A Kaluza-Klein Subttractor

We generalize the results of arXiv:1212.1875 and arXiv:1212.6919 on attraction basins and their boundaries to the case of a specific class of rotating black holes, namely the ergo-free branch of extremal black holes in Kaluza-Klein theory. We find that exact solutions that span the attraction basin can be found even in the rotating case by appealing to certain symmetries of the equations of motion. They are characterized by two asymptotic parameters that generalize those of the non-rotating case, and the boundaries of the basin are spinning versions of the (generalized) subttractor geometry. We also give examples to illustrate that the shape of the attraction basin can drastically change depending on the theory.

Attraction, with Boundaries

We study the basin of attraction of static extremal black holes, in the concrete setting of the STU model. By finding a connection to a decoupled Toda-like system and solving it exactly, we find a simple way to characterize the attraction basin via competing behaviors of certain parameters. The boundaries of attraction arise in the various limits where these parameters degenerate to zero. We find that these boundaries are generalizations of the recently introduced (extremal) subtracted geometry: the warp factors still exhibit asymptotic integer power law behaviors, but the powers can be different from one. As we cross over one of these boundaries ("generalized subttractors"), the solutions turn unstable and start blowing up at finite radius and lose their asymptotic region. Our results are fully analytic, but we also solve a simpler theory where the attraction basin is lower dimensional and easy to visualize, and present a simple picture that illustrates many of the basic ideas.

Subttractors

We consider extremal limits of the recently constructed "subtracted geometry". We show that extremality makes the horizon attractive against scalar perturbations, but radial evolution of such perturbations changes the asymptotics: from a conical-box to flat Minkowski. Thus these are black holes that retain their near-horizon geometry under perturbations that drastically change their asymptotics. We also show that this extremal subtracted solution ("subttractor") can arise as a boundary of the basin of attraction for flat space attractors. We demonstrate this by using a fairly minimal action (that has connections with STU model) where the equations of motion are integrable and we are able to find analytic solutions that capture the flow from the horizon to the asymptotic region. The subttractor is a boundary between two qualitatively different flows. We expect that these results have generalizations for other theories with charged dilatonic black holes.

Quantum Critical Superfluid Flows and Anisotropic Domain Walls

We construct charged anisotropic AdS domain walls as solutions of a consistent truncation of type IIB string theory. These are a one-parameter family of solutions that flow to an AdS fixed point in the IR, exhibiting emergent conformal invariance and quantum criticality. They represent the zero-temperature limit of the holographic superfluids at finite superfluid velocity constructed in arXiv:1010.5777. We show that these domain walls exist only for velocities less than a critical value, agreeing in detail with a conjecture made there. We also comment about the IR limits of flows with velocities higher than this critical value, and point out an intriguing similarity between the phase diagrams of holographic superfluid flows and those of ordinary superconductors with imbalanced chemical potential.

Type IIB Holographic Superfluid Flows

We construct fully backreacted holographic superfluid flow solutions in a five-dimensional theory that arises as a consistent truncation of low energy type IIB string theory. We construct a black hole with scalar and vector hair in this theory, and study the phase diagram. As expected, the superfluid phase ceases to exist for high enough superfluid velocity, but we show that the phase transition between normal and superfluid phases is always second order. We also analyze the zero temperature limit of these solutions. Interestingly, we find evidence that the emergent IR conformal symmetry of the zero-temperature domain wall is broken at high enough velocity.

Quantum Field Theory, Black Holes and Holography

These notes are an expanded version of lectures given at the Croatian School on Black Holes at Trpanj, June 21-25, 2010. The aim is to provide a practical introduction to quantum field theory in curved spacetime and related black hole physics, with AdS/CFT as the loose motivation.

Vortices in (2+1)d Conformal Fluids

We study isolated, stationary, axially symmetric vortex solutions in (2+1)-dimensional viscous conformal fluids. The equations describing them can be brought to the form of three coupled first order ODEs for the radial and rotational velocities and the temperature. They have a rich space of solutions characterized by the radial energy and angular momentum fluxes. We do a detailed study of the phases in the one-parameter family of solutions with no energy flux. This parameter is the product of the asymptotic vorticity and temperature. When it is large, the radial fluid velocity reaches the speed of light at a finite inner radius. When it is below a critical value, the velocity is everywhere bounded, but at the origin there is a discontinuity. We comment on turbulence, potential gravity duals, non-viscous limits and non-relativistic limits.

The Many Phases of Holographic Superfluids

We investigate holographic superfluids in AdS_{d+1} with d=3,4 in the non-backreacted approximation for various masses of the scalar field. In d=3 the phase structure is universal for all the masses that we consider: the critical temperature decreases as the superfluid velocity increases, and as it is cranked high enough, the order of the phase transition changes from second to first. Surprisingly, in d=4 we find that the phase structure is more intricate. For sufficiently high mass, there is always a second order phase transition to the normal phase, no matter how high the superfluid velocity. For some parameters, as we lower the temperature, this transition happens before a first order transition to a new superconducting phase. Across this first order transition, the gap in the transverse conductivity jumps from almost zero to about half its maximum value. We also introduce a double scaling limit where we can study the phase transitions (semi-)analytically in the large velocity limit. The results corroborate and complement our numerical results. In d=4, this approach has the virtue of being fully analytically tractable.

Hidden Conformal Symmetries of Five-Dimensional Black Holes

Recently it was shown by Castro, Maloney and Strominger (CMS) that 4D Kerr black holes have a "hidden" conformal symmetry. Using some old results of Cvetic and Larsen, I show that this result is very likely to hold also for the most general black holes in five dimensions arising from heterotic/type II string theory. In particular, we show how the wave equation in these geometries in the "near region" can be written in terms of SL(2,R) X SL(2,R) Casimirs. For the special case when the black hole has two spins but no U(1) charges, detailed matches for entropy and absorption cross sections between CFT and geometry are found. The black holes we consider need not be close to extremality.
