Composite-fermion crystallites in quantum dots

The correlations in the ground state of interacting electrons in a two-dimensional quantum dot in a high magnetic field are known to undergo a qualitative change from liquid-like to crystal-like as the total angular momentum becomes large. We show that the composite-fermion theory provides an excellent account of the states in both regimes. The quantum mechanical formation of composite fermions with a large number of attached vortices automatically generates omposite fermion crystallites in finite quantum dots.

Composite fermions in the neighborhood of $ν=1/3$

We present extensive comparisons of the composite fermion theory with exact results in the filling factor range $2/5>ν>1/3$, which affirm that the composite fermion theory correctly describes the qualitative reorganization of the low energy Hilbert space of the strongly correlated electrons, and predicts eigenenergies with an accuracy of $\sim 0.1$ %. These facts establish the basic validity of the composite fermion description in this filling factor region.

Partially spin polarized quantum Hall effect in the filling factor range 1/3 < nu < 2/5

The residual interaction between composite fermions (CFs) can express itself through higher order fractional Hall effect. With the help of diagonalization in a truncated composite fermion basis of low-energy many-body states, we predict that quantum Hall effect with partial spin polarization is possible at several fractions between $ν=1/3$ and $ν=2/5$. The estimated excitation gaps are approximately two orders of magnitude smaller than the gap at $ν=1/3$, confirming that the inter-CF interaction is extremely weak in higher CF levels.

Energy-Momentum (Quasi-)Localization for Gravitating Systems

Traditional approaches to energy-momentum localization led to reference frame dependent pseudotensors. The more modern idea is quasilocal energy-momentum. We take a Hamiltonian approach. The Hamiltonian boundary term gives not only the quasilocal values but also boundary conditions via the Hamiltonian variation boundary principle. Selecting a Hamiltonian boundary term involves several choices. We found that superpotentials can serve as Hamiltonian boundary terms, consequently pseudotensors are actually quasilocal and legitimate. Various Hamiltonian boundary term quasilocal expressions are considered including some famous pseudotensors, Møller's tetrad-teleparallel ``tensor'', Chen's covariant expressions, the expressions of Katz & coworkers, the expression of Brown & York, and some spinor expressions. We emphasize the need for identifying criteria for a good choice.
