Pseudo-neutrino versus recoil formalism for 4-body phase space and applications to nuclear decay

It is well-known that the traditional treatment of radiative corrections that utilizes the "true" neutrino momentum $\vec{p}_ν$ in the differential decay rate formula could lead to a $\sim α/π$ systematic error in certain observables due to the mistreatment of 4-body kinematics. We investigate the theory structure of one of the proposed solutions, the "$ν'$-formalism", in the non-recoil limit appropriate for neutron and nuclear beta decays. We derive an elegant master formula for the 4-body phase space and use it to re-analyze the spectrum-dependent "outer" radiative corrections to the beta decay of a polarized spin-half nucleus; a complete set of analytic expressions is provided for readers to straightforwardly obtain the final numerical results. We compare it to the "recoil formalism" where the energy of the recoil nucleus is fixed.

Quark mass difference effects in hadronic Fermi matrix elements from first principles

It was recently estimated that the strong isospin-symmetry breaking (ISB) corrections to the Fermi matrix element in free neutron decay could be of the order $10^{-4}$, one order of magnitude larger than the na\"ıve estimate based on the Behrends-Sirlin-Ademollo-Gatto theorem. To investigate this claim, we derive a general expression of the leading ISB correction to hadronic Fermi matrix elements, which takes the form of a four-point correlation function in lattice gauge theory and is straightforward to compute from first principles. Our formalism paves the way for the first determination of such correction in the neutron sector with fully-controlled theory uncertainties.

The Standard Model theory of neutron beta decay

We review the status of the Standard Model theory of neutron beta decay. Particular emphasis is put on the recent developments in the electroweak radiative corrections. Given that some existing approaches give slightly different results, we thoroughly review the origin of discrepancies, and provide our recommended value for the radiative correction to the neutron and nuclear decay rates. The use of dispersion relation, lattice Quantum Chromodynamics and effective field theory framework allows for high-precision theory calculations at the level of $10^{-4}$, turning neutron beta decay into a powerful tool to search for new physics, complementary to high-energy collider experiments. We offer an outlook to the future improvements.

Model-independent determination of nuclear weak form factors and implications for Standard Model precision tests

We analyze the recoil corrections in superallowed beta decays of $T=1$, $J^P=0^+$ nuclei by fixing the mean square charge weak radius model-independently using the data of multiple charge radii across the nuclear isotriplet. By comparing to model estimations, we argue that the existing theory uncertainty in the statistical rate function $f$ might have been substantially underestimated. We discuss the implications of our proposed strategy for precision tests of Standard Model, including a potential alleviation of the first-row CKM unitarity deficit, and motivate new experiments for charge radii measurements.

Dispersive formalism for the nuclear structure correction $δ_\mathrm{NS}$ to the $β$ decay rate

We analyze the axial $γW$-box diagram for $I(J^P)=1(0^+)$ nuclei and provide a dispersion representation of the nuclear-structure correction $δ_\text{NS}$ including its energy-dependent part. We also summarize useful isospin rotation formula and representations in nuclear theory that could facilitate the calculation of the parity-odd nuclear structure function $F_3(ν,Q^2)$. They provide a rigorous theory framework for the future, high-precision calculation of the nuclear structure correction $δ_\text{NS}$ necessary for the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ud}|$ from superallowed nuclear $β$ decays.

Electroweak nuclear radii constrain the isospin breaking correction to $V_{ud}$

We lay out a novel formalism to connect the isospin-symmetry breaking correction to the rates of superallowed nuclear beta decays, $δ_\text{C}$, to the isospin-breaking sensitive combinations of electroweak nuclear radii that can be accessed experimentally. We individuate transitions in the superallowed decay chart where a measurement of the neutron skin of a stable daughter even at a moderate precision could already help discriminating between models used to compute $δ_\text{C}$. We review the existing experimental situation and make connection to the existing and future experimental programs.

First row CKM unitarity

In this talk I briefly review the precision test of the first row CKM unitarity, focusing mainly on $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ extracted from pion, kaon, neutron and superallowed nuclear beta decays. I will discuss the current status of several important Standard Model theory inputs to these processes, and the need for future improvements.

Electron Mass Singularities in Semileptonic Kaon Decays

We show that recent improvements in the $O(α)$ long-distance quantum electrodynamics (QED) corrections to the radiative inclusive $K_{e3}$ decay rate using the Sirlin representation are free from infrared divergences and collinear electron mass singularities in the limit $m_e\rightarrow0$, as predicted by the Kinoshita-Lee-Nauenberg theorem. We also verify that in massless QED with the simultaneous dimensional regularization of QED photon infrared divergences and electron mass singularities leads to the same result for the inclusive rate in the limit of four space-time dimensions. The equivalence of the two approaches results in part from an interesting interplay between a small chirality-breaking effect in the massless electron limit and the generalization of space-time algebra and phase space integrals to $d>4$ dimensions. Our finding supports the small theoretical uncertainty claimed for $K_{e3}$ radiative inclusive rates and reaffirms its utility in precision unitarity tests of the quark mixing matrix.

Complete theory of radiative corrections to $K_{\ell 3}$ decays and the $V_{us}$ update

We fill up the missing piece in our own re-analysis of the long-distance electromagnetic radiative corrections to semileptonic kaon decays by performing a rigorous study in the $K\rightarrowπμ^+ν_μ(γ)$ channels. With appropriate experimental and lattice inputs, we achieve a precision level of $10^{-4}$ in these channels. This is comparable to our previous analysis in the $K\rightarrowπe^+ν_e(γ)$ channels. With this new result, we present an updated global analysis to extract the Standard Model parameter $|V_{us}|$ from semileptonic kaon decays. We obtain $|V_{us}|=0.22308(55)$ and $0.22356(73)$, using the lattice average of the $K^0\rightarrowπ^-$ transition form factor at $N_f=2+1+1$ and $N_f=2+1$, respectively.

New calculations of neutron and kaon decays

We describe two recent developments of the radiative correction theory in semileptonic beta decays. For neutron, a novel dispersive analysis of the $γW$-box diagram making use of neutrino scattering data leads to an improved precision and a shifted central value of $V_{ud}$; for kaon, an appropriate combination of meson form factors, lattice QCD inputs and chiral perturbation theory gives a much-improved determination of the radiative corrections in semileptonic kaon decays. These new calculations help to unveil/sharpen a series of anomalies in the measurements of $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ that may point towards the existence of new physics.

Extracting the low-energy constant $L_0^r$ at three flavors from pion-kaon scattering

Based on our analysis of the contributions from the connected and disconnected contraction diagrams to the pion-kaon scattering amplitude, we provide the first determination of the only free low-energy constant at $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$, known as $L_0^r$, in SU$(4|1)$ Partially-Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory using the data from the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration, $L_0^r(μ=M_ρ) = 0.77(20)(25)(7)(7)(2)\cdot 10^{-3}$. The theory uncertainties originate from the unphysical scattering length, the physical low-energy constants, the higher-oder chiral corrections, the (lattice) meson masses and the pion decay constant, respectively

Towards a discovery of BSM physics from the Cabibbo angle anomaly

New developments in both the theories and experiments related to the extraction of the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ led to a series of new anomalies, for instance the apparent violation of the top-row unitarity relation. It is important to further reduce all the associated Standard Model theory uncertainties in order to better understand whether such observations point towards the possibility of physics beyond the Standard Model, or rather some unexpectedly large Standard Model effects. This requires improved studies of tree-level and higher-order Standard Model corrections that enter the beta decays of pions, neutron, nuclei and kaons. We will briefly review the recent progress along this direction and discuss possible improvements in the future.

Update on $|V_{us}|$ and $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|$ from semileptonic kaon and pion decays

We discuss the recent progress in the study of semileptonic kaon and pion decays, including new experimental results, improved electroweak radiative corrections, form factor calculations and isospin-breaking effects. As a result, we obtain $|V_{us}|=0.22309(40)(39)(3)$ from kaon semileptonic decays and $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|=0.22908(66)(41)(40)(2)(1)$ from the ratio between the kaon and pion semileptonic decay rates. We report an apparent violation of the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity at a $3.2\sim 5.6σ$ level, and a discrepancy at a $2.2σ$ level between the value of $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|$ determined from the vector and axial charged weak interactions. Prospects for future improvements in those comparative precision tests involving $|V_{ud}|$, $|V_{us}|$ and their implications for physics beyond the Standard Model are described.

Improved $K_{e3}$ radiative corrections sharpen the $K_{μ2}$--$K_{l3}$ discrepancy

The measurements of $V_{us}$ in leptonic $(K_{μ2})$ and semileptonic $(K_{l3})$ kaon decays exhibit a $3σ$ disagreement, which could originate either from physics beyond the Standard Model or some large unidentified Standard Model systematic effects. Clarifying this issue requires a careful examination of all existing Standard Model inputs. Making use of a newly-proposed computational framework and the most recent lattice QCD results, we perform a comprehensive re-analysis of the electroweak radiative corrections to the $K_{e3}$ decay rates that achieves an unprecedented level of precision of $10^{-4}$, which improves the current best results by almost an order of magnitude. No large systematic effects are found, which suggests that the electroweak radiative corrections should be removed from the ``list of culprits'' responsible for the $K_{μ2}$--$K_{l3}$ discrepancy.

Radiative corrections to semileptonic beta decays: Progress and challenges

We review some recent progress in the theory of electroweak radiative corrections in semileptonic decay processes. The resurrection of the so-called Sirlin's representation based on current algebra relations permits a clear separation between the perturbatively-calculable and incalculable pieces in the $\mathcal{O}(G_Fα)$ radiative corrections. The latter are expressed as compact hadronic matrix elements that allow systematic non-perturbative analysis such as dispersion relation and lattice QCD. This brings substantial improvements to the precision of the electroweak radiative corrections in semileptonic decays of pion, kaon, free neutron and $J^P=0^+$ nuclei that are important theory inputs in precision tests of the Standard Model. Unresolved issues and future prospects are discussed.

Dispersion relation analysis of the radiative corrections to $g_A$ in the neutron $β$-decay

We present the first and complete dispersion relation analysis of the inner radiative corrections to the axial coupling constant $g_A$ in the neutron $β$-decay. Using experimental inputs from the elastic form factors and the spin-dependent structure function $g_1$, we determine the contribution from the $γW$-box diagram to a precision better than $10^{-4}$. Our calculation indicates that the inner radiative corrections to the Fermi and the Gamow-Teller matrix element in the neutron $β$-decay are almost identical, i.e. the ratio $λ=g_A/g_V$ is almost unrenormalized. With this result, we predict the bare axial coupling constant to be {$\mathring{g}_A=-1.2754(13)_\mathrm{exp}(2)_\mathrm{RC}$} based on the PDG average $λ=-1.2756(13)$

High-precision determination of the $K_{e3}$ radiative corrections

We report a high-precision calculation of the Standard Model electroweak radiative corrections in the $K\to πe^+ν(γ)$ decay as a part of the combined theory effort to understand the existing anomaly in the determinations of $V_{us}$. Our new analysis features a chiral resummation of the large infrared-singular terms in the radiative corrections and a well-under-control strong interaction uncertainty based on the most recent lattice QCD inputs. While being consistent with the current state-of-the-art results obtained from chiral perturbation theory, we reduce the existing theory uncertainty from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-4}$. Our result suggests that the Standard Model electroweak effects cannot account for the $V_{us}$ anomaly.

Two-Meson Form Factors in Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present a comprehensive analysis of form factors for two light pseudoscalar mesons induced by scalar, vector, and tensor quark operators. The theoretical framework is based on a combination of unitarized chiral perturbation theory and dispersion relations. The low-energy constants in chiral perturbation theory are fixed by a global fit to the available data of the two-meson scattering phase shifts. Each form factor derived from unitarized chiral perturbation theory is improved by iteratively applying a dispersion relation. This study updates the existing results in the literature and explores those that have not been systematically studied previously, in particular the two-meson tensor form factors within unitarized chiral perturbation theory. We also discuss the applications of these form factors as mandatory inputs for low-energy phenomena, such as the semi-leptonic decays $B_s\to π^+π^-\ell^+\ell^-$ and the $τ$ lepton decay $τ\rightarrowπ^{-}π^{0}ν_τ$, in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model.
