$V_{ud}$ radiative corrections with lattice input

We will describe several pioneering efforts in the study of electromagnetic radiative corrections to semileptonic decay processes, with particular emphasis on the role of lattice QCD. These studies are essential for the precise extraction of the matrix element $V_{ud}$ from beta decays of pion, free neutron and $J^P=0^+$ nuclei, and are crucial to address several recently-emerged anomalies involving $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$, which may provide hints for physics beyond the Standard Model.

Lattice QCD calculation of the electroweak box diagrams for the kaon semileptonic decays

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the axial $γW$-box diagrams relevant for the kaon semileptonic decays. We utilize a recently proposed method, which connects the electroweak radiative corrections in Sirlin's representation to that in chiral perturbation theory. It allows us to use the axial $γW$-box correction in the SU(3) limit to obtain the low energy constants for chiral perturbation theory. From first principles our results confirm the previously used low energy constants provided by the minimal resonance model with a significant reduction in uncertainties.

New method for calculating electromagnetic effects in semileptonic beta-decays of mesons

We construct several classes of hadronic matrix elements and relate them to the low-energy constants in Chiral Perturbation Theory that describe the electromagnetic effects in the semileptonic beta decay of the pion and the kaon. We propose to calculate them using lattice QCD, and argue that such a calculation will make an immediate impact to a number of interesting topics at the precision frontier, including the outstanding anomalies in $|V_{us}|$ and the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity.

Weak charge and weak radius of ${}^{12}$C

We present a feasibility study of a simultaneous sub-percent extraction of the weak charge and the weak radius of the ${}^{12}$C nucleus using parity-violating electron scattering, based on a largely model-independent assessment of the uncertainties. The corresponding measurement is considered to be carried out at the future MESA facility in Mainz with $E_{\rm beam} = 155$ MeV. We find that a combination of a $0.3\%$ precise measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry at forward angles with a $10\%$ measurement at backward angles will allow to determine the weak charge and the weak radius of ${}^{12}$C with $0.4\%$ and $0.5\%$ precision, respectively. These values could be improved to $0.3\%$ and $0.2\%$ for a $3\%$ backward measurement. This experimental program will have impact on precision low-energy tests in the electroweak sector and nuclear structure.

Contraction Diagram Analysis in Pion-Kaon Scattering

We study the contributions from the connected and disconnected contraction diagrams to the pion-kaon scattering amplitude within the framework of SU$(4|1)$ partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory. Combining this with a finite-volume analysis, we demonstrate that a lattice calculation of the easier computable connected correlation functions is able to provide valuable information of the noisier disconnected correlation functions, and may serve as a theory guidance for the future refinement of the corresponding lattice techniques.

Joint lattice QCD - dispersion theory analysis confirms the quark-mixing top-row unitarity deficit

Recently, the first ever lattice computation of the $γW$-box radiative correction to the rate of the semileptonic pion decay allowed for a reduction of the theory uncertainty of that rate by a factor of $\sim3$. A recent dispersion evaluation of the $γW$-box correction on the neutron also led to a significant reduction of the theory uncertainty, but shifted the value of $V_{ud}$ extracted from the neutron and superallowed nuclear $β$ decay, resulting in a deficit of the CKM unitarity in the top row. A direct lattice computation of the $γW$-box correction for the neutron decay would provide an independent cross-check for this result but is very challenging. Before those challenges are overcome, we propose a hybrid analysis, converting the lattice calculation on the pion to that on the neutron by a combination of dispersion theory and phenomenological input. The new prediction for the universal radiative correction to free and bound neutron $β$-decay reads $Δ_R^V=0.02477(24)$, in excellent agreement with the dispersion theory result $Δ_R^V=0.02467(22)$. Combining with other relevant information, the top-row CKM unitarity deficit persists.

First-principles calculation of electroweak box diagrams from lattice QCD

We present the first realistic lattice QCD calculation of the $γW$-box diagrams relevant for beta decays. The nonperturbative low-momentum integral of the $γW$ loop is calculated using a lattice QCD simulation, complemented by the perturbative QCD result at high momenta. Using the pion semileptonic decay as an example, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method. By using domain wall fermions at the physical pion mass with multiple lattice spacings and volumes, we obtain the axial $γW$-box correction to the semileptonic pion decay, $\Box_{γW}^{VA}\big|_π=2.830(11)_{\mathrm{stat}}(26)_{\mathrm{sys}}\times10^{-3}$, with the total uncertainty controlled at the level of $\sim1$\%. This study sheds light on the first-principles computation of the $γW$-box correction to the neutron decay, which plays a decisive role in the determination of $|V_{ud}|$.

A New Theory Framework for the Electroweak Radiative Corrections in $K_{l3}$ Decays

We propose a new theory framework to study the electroweak radiative corrections in $K_{l3}$ decays by combining the classic current algebra approach with the modern effective field theory. Under this framework, the most important $\mathcal{O}(G_Fα)$ radiative corrections are described by a single tensor $T^{μν}$ involving the time-ordered product between the charged weak current and the electromagnetic current, and all remaining pieces are calculable order-by-order in Chiral Perturbation Theory. We further point out a special advantage in the $K_{l3}^{0}$ channel that it suffers the least impact from the poorly-constrained low-energy constants. This finding may serve as a basis for a more precise extraction of the matrix element $V_{us}$ in the future.

Reduced uncertainty of the axial $γZ$-box correction to the proton's weak charge

We present the fully up-to-date calculation of the $γZ$-box correction which needs to be taken into account to determine the weak mixing angle at low energies from parity-violating electron proton scattering. We make use of neutrino and antineutrino inclusive scattering data to predict the parity-violating structure function $F_3^{γZ}$ by isospin symmetry. Our new analysis confirms previous results for the axial contribution to the $γZ$-box graph, and reduces the uncertainty by a factor of~2. In addition, we note that the presence of parity-violating photon-hadron interactions induces an additional contribution via $F_3^{γγ}$. Using experimental and theoretical constraints on the nucleon anapole moment we are able to estimate the uncertainty associated with this contribution. We point out that future measurements are expected to significantly reduce this latter uncertainty.

Toward a First-Principles Calculation of Electroweak Box Diagrams

We derive a Feynman-Hellmann theorem relating the second-order nucleon energy shift resulting from the introduction of periodic source terms of electromagnetic and isovector axial currents to the parity-odd nucleon structure function $F_3^N$. It is a crucial ingredient in the theoretical study of the $γW$ and $γZ$ box diagrams that are known to suffer from large hadronic uncertainties. We demonstrate that for a given $Q^2$, one only needs to compute a small number of energy shifts in order to obtain the required inputs for the box diagrams. Future lattice calculations based on this approach may shed new light on various topics in precision physics including the refined determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements and the weak mixing angle.

Constraints on Disconnected Contributions in $ππ$ Scattering

The accuracy of the lattice QCD computation of hadron-hadron scattering at low isospin depends critically on the ability to compute correlation functions with fermionic disconnected Wick contractions. This happens, for instance, in isospin $I=0$ $ππ$ scattering, which receives contributions from rectangular and vacuum types of contractions among other easier calculable ones. Combining Lüscher's formula and partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory, we provide precise theory predictions of the discrete energy levels extracted from specific linear combinations of lattice correlation functions corresponding to various types of contractions. Expressions are provided for extracting the unphysical low-energy constants in the partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory from the energy levels for these contractions. The predictions for the rectangular and vacuum contractions may serve as solid tests of the accuracy for existing and future lattice studies of $ππ$ scattering.

Relating hadronic CP-violation to higher-twist distributions

The nucleon sigma term of the isoscalar and isovector quark chromo-magnetic dipole moments are essential inputs for the determination of the CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings induced by quark chromo-electric dipole moments. We demonstrate that the former can be mapped to the third moment of the nucleon twist-three chiral-odd distribution functions $e^q(x)$ which are in principle measurable in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes. We perform a survey on existing model calculations as well as experimental data on $e^u(x)+e^d(x)$ and derive a predicted range for the isoscalar chromo-magnetic dipole moment sigma term.

Effective Field Theory in The Study of Long Range Nuclear Parity Violation on Lattice

A non-zero signal $A_γ^\mathrm{np}=(-3.0\pm1.4\pm0.2)\times 10^{-8}$ of the gamma-ray asymmetry in the neutron-proton capture was recently reported by the NPDGamma Collaboration which provides the first determination of the $ΔI=1$ parity-odd pion-nucleon coupling constant $h_π^1=(2.6\pm 1.2\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-7}$. The ability to reproduce this value from first principles serves as a direct test of our current understanding of the interplay between the strong and weak interaction at low energy. To motivate new lattice studies of $h_π^1$, we review the current status of the theoretical understanding of this coupling, which includes our recent work that relates it to a nucleon mass-splitting by a soft-pion theorem. We further investigate the possibility of calculating the mass-splitting on the lattice by providing effective field theory parameterizations of all the involved quark contraction diagrams. We show that the lattice calculations of the easier connected diagrams will provide information of the chiral logarithms in the much harder quark loop diagrams and thus help in the chiral extrapolation of the latter.

Reduced hadronic uncertainty in the determination of $V_{ud}$

We analyze the universal radiative correction $Δ_R^V$ to neutron and superallowed nuclear $β$ decay by expressing the hadronic $γW$-box contribution in terms of a dispersion relation, which we identify as an integral over the first Nachtmann moment of the $γW$ interference structure function $F_3^{(0)}$. By connecting the needed input to existing data on neutrino and antineutrino scattering, we obtain an updated value of $Δ_R^V = 0.02467(22)$, wherein the hadronic uncertainty is reduced. Assuming other Standard Model theoretical calculations and experimental measurements remain unchanged, we obtain an updated value of $|V_{ud}| = 0.97366(15)$, raising tension with the first row CKM unitarity constraint. We comment on ways current and future experiments can provide input to our dispersive analysis.

Novel Soft-Pion Theorem for Long-Range Nuclear Parity Violation

The parity-odd effect in the Standard Model weak neutral current reveals itself in the long-range parity-violating nuclear potential generated by the pion exchanges in the $ΔI=1$ channel with the parity-odd pion-nucleon coupling constant $h_π^1$. Despite decades of experimental and theoretical efforts, the size of this coupling constant is still not well-understood. In this Letter we derive a soft-pion theorem relating $h_π^1$ and the neutron-proton mass-splitting induced by an artificial parity-even counterpart of the $ΔI=1$ weak Lagrangian, and demonstrate that the theorem still holds exact at the next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. A considerable amount of simplification is expected in the study of $h_π^1$ by using either lattice or other QCD models following its reduction from a parity-odd proton-neutron-pion matrix element to a simpler spectroscopic quantity. The theorem paves the way to much more precise calculations of $h_π^1$, and thus a quantitative test of the strangeness-conserving neutral current interaction of the Standard Model is foreseen.

Parity- and Time Reversal-Violating Pion Nucleon Couplings: Higher Order Chiral Matching Relations

Parity- and time reversal-violating (PVTV) pion-nucleon couplings govern the magnitude of long-range contributions to nucleon and atomic electric dipole moments. When these couplings arise from chiral symmetry-breaking CP-violating operators, such as the QCD $θ$-term or quark chromoelectric dipole moments, one may relate hadronic matrix elements entering the PVTV couplings to nucleon and pion mass shifts by exploiting the corresponding chiral transformation properties at leading order (LO) in the chiral expansion. We compute the higher-order contributions to the lowest order relations arising from chiral loops and next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) operators. We find that for the QCD $θ$-term the higher order contributions are analytic in the quark masses, while for the quark chromoelectric dipole moments and chiral symmetry-breaking four-quark operators, the matching relations also receive non-analytic corrections. Numerical estimates suggest that for the isoscalar PVTV pion-nucleon coupling, the higher order corrections may be as large as $\sim 20\%$, while for the isovector coupling, more substantial corrections are possible.

Connected and Disconnected Contractions in Pion-Pion Scattering

We show that the interplay of chiral effective field theory and lattice QCD can be used in the evaluation of so-called disconnected diagrams, which appear in the study of the isoscalar and isovector channels of pion-pion scattering and have long been a major challenge for the lattice community. By means of partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory, we distinguish and analyze the effects from different types of contraction diagrams to the pion-pion scattering amplitude, including its scattering lengths and the energy-dependence of its imaginary part. Our results may be used to test the current degree of accuracy of lattice calculation in the handling of disconnected diagrams, as well as to set criteria for the future improvement of relevant lattice computational techniques that may play a critical role in the study of other interesting QCD matrix elements.

Lattice QCD spectroscopy for hadronic CP violation

The interpretation of nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) experiments is clouded by large theoretical uncertainties associated with nonperturbative matrix elements. In various beyond-the-Standard Model scenarios nuclear and diamagnetic atomic EDMs are expected to be dominated by CP-violating pion-nucleon interactions that arise from quark chromo-electric dipole moments. The corresponding CP-violating pion-nucleon coupling strengths are, however, poorly known. In this work we propose a strategy to calculate these couplings by using spectroscopic lattice QCD techniques. Instead of directly calculating the pion-nucleon coupling constants, a challenging task, we use chiral symmetry relations that link the pion-nucleon couplings to nucleon sigma terms and mass splittings that are significantly easier to calculate. In this work, we show that these relations are reliable up to next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion in both SU(2) and SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. We conclude with a brief discussion about practical details regarding the required lattice QCD calculations and the phenomenological impact of an improved understanding of CP-violating matrix elements.
