Study on Timing Performance of a Readout Circuit for SiPM

In recent years, SiPM photoelectric devices have drawn much attention in the domain of time-of-flight-based positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). Using them to construct PET detectors with excellent coincidence time resolution (CTR) is always one of research focus. In this paper, a SiPM readout pre-amplifier based on common-base current amplifier structure followed by a Pole-Zero (PZ) compensation network is constructed, and the main factors that affect the timing performance of the PET detector are investigated. By experimental measurement, we found that the CTR is heavily related to the bandwidth of the amplifier, bias voltage of SiPM, comparator threshold, and PZ network parameter. The test setup has two detectors, one with LYSO crystal (3 mm 3 mm 10 mm) coupled with a Hamamatsu SiPM (S12642-0404), and the other with LaBr3 coupled to a PMT-R9800. After the optimization of the readout circuit with related factors, the CTR between the two detectors is measured as 266ps FWHM. The test result is a helpful guideline for the readout ASIC chip design in our next step.

Compactness Criterion for Semimartingale Laws and Semimartingale Optimal Transport

We provide a compactness criterion for the set of laws $\mathfrak{P}^{ac}_{sem}(Θ)$ on the Skorokhod space for which the canonical process $X$ is a semimartingale having absolutely continuous characteristics with differential characteristics taking values in some given set $Θ$ of Lévy triplets. Whereas boundedness of $Θ$ implies tightness of $\mathfrak{P}^{ac}_{sem}(Θ)$, closedness fails in general, even when choosing $Θ$ to be additionally closed and convex, as a sequence of purely discontinuous martingales may converge to a diffusion. To that end, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition that prevents the purely discontinuous martingale part in the canonical representation of $X$ to create a diffusion part in the limit. As a result, we obtain a sufficient criterion for $\mathfrak{P}^{ac}_{sem}(Θ)$ to be compact, which turns out to be also a necessary one if the geometry of $Θ$ is similar to a box on the product space. As an application, we consider a semimartingale optimal transport problem, where the transport plans are elements of $\mathfrak{P}^{ac}_{sem}(Θ)$. We prove the existence of an optimal transport law $\widehat{\mathbb{P}}$ and obtain a duality result extending the classical Kantorovich duality to this setup.

Examples of Itô càdlàg rough paths

Based on a dyadic approximation of Itô integrals, we show the existence of Itô càdlàg rough paths above general semimartingales, suitable Gaussian processes and non-negative typical price paths. Furthermore, Lyons-Victoir extension theorem for càdlàg paths is presented, stating that every càdlàg path of finite $p$-variation can be lifted to a rough path.

Observation of tunneling gap in epitaxial ultrathin films of pyrite-type copper disulfide

We report scanning tunneling microscopy investigation on epitaxial ultrathin films of pyrite-type copper disulfide. Layer by layer growth of CuS2 films with a preferential orientation of (111) on SrTiO3(001) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ substrates is achieved by molecular beam epitaxy growth. For ultrathin films on both kinds of substrates, we observed symmetric tunneling gap around Fermi level that persists up to ~ 15 K. The tunneling gap degrades with either increasing temperature or increasing thickness, suggesting new matter states at the extreme two dimensional limit.

Femtosecond Optical Superregular Breathers

Superregular (SR) breathers are nonlinear wave structures formed by a unique nonlinear superposition of pairs of quasi-Akhmediev breathers. They describe a complete scenario of modulation instability that develops from localized small perturbations as well as an unusual quasiannihilation of breather collision. Here, we demonstrate that femtosecond optical SR breathers in optical fibers exhibit intriguing half-transition and full-suppression states, which are absent in the picosecond regime governed by the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, the full-suppression mode, which is strictly associated with the regime of vanishing growth rate of modulation instability, reveals a crucial \textit{non-amplifying} nonlinear dynamics of localized small perturbations. We numerically confirm the robustness of such different SR modes excited from ideal and nonideal initial states in both integrable and nonintegrable cases.

Origin of charge transfer and enhanced electron-phonon coupling in single unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3

Interface charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling have been suggested to play a crucial role in the recently discovered high-temperature superconductivity of single unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3. However, their origin remains elusive. Here, using ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and element-sensitive X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), we identify the strengthened Ti-O bond that contributes to the interface enhanced electron-phonon coupling and unveil the band bending at the FeSe/SrTiO3 interface that leads to the charge transfer from SrTiO3 to FeSe films. We also observe band renormalization that accompanies the onset of superconductivity. Our results not only provide valuable insights into the mechanism of the interface-enhanced superconductivity, but also point out a promising route towards designing novel superconductors in heterostructures with band-bending induced charge transfer and interfacial enhanced electron-phonon coupling.

An extensive impurity-scattering study on the pairing symmetry of monolayer FeSe films on SrTiO3

Determination of the pairing symmetry in monolayer FeSe films on SrTiO3 is a requisite for understanding the high superconducting transition temperature in this system, which has attracted intense theoretical and experimental studies but remains controversial. Here, by introducing several types of point defects in FeSe monolayer films, we conduct a systematic investigation on the impurity-induced electronic states by spatially resolved scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Ranging from surface adsorption, chemical substitution to intrinsic structural modification, these defects generate a variety of scattering strength, which renders new insights on the pairing symmetry.

Characteristics of optical multi-peak solitons induced by higher-order effects in an erbium-doped fiber system

We study multi-peak solitons \textit{on a plane-wave background} in an erbium-doped fiber system with some higher-order effects, which is governed by a coupled Hirota and Maxwel-Bloch (H-MB) model. The important characteristics of multi-peak solitons induced by the higher-order effects, such as the velocity changes, localization or periodicity attenuation, and state transitions, are revealed in detail. In particular, our results demonstrate explicitly that a multi-peak soliton can be converted to an anti-dark soliton when the periodicity vanishes; on the other hand, a multi-peak soliton is transformed to a periodic wave when the localization vanishes. Numerical simulations are performed to confirm the propagation stability of multi-peak solitons riding on a plane-wave background. Finally, we compare and discuss the similarity and difference of multi-peak solitons in special degenerate cases of the H-MB system with general existence conditions.

Stable Soliton Excitations in Modulational Instability Regime with the Fourth-order Effects

We study the correspondence between modulational instability and types of fundamental nonlinear excitation in a nonlinear fiber with both third-order and fourth-order effects. Some stable soliton excitations are obtained in modulational instability regime, which have not been found in nonlinear fibers with second-order effects and third-order effects. Explicit analysis suggests that the stable soliton existence is related with the modulation stability circle in the modulation instability regime, and they just exist in the modulational instability regime outside of the modulational stability circle. It should be emphasized that the stable soliton just exist with two special profiles on a continuous wave background with certain frequency. The evolution stability of the solitons is tested numerically, which indicate they are robust against perturbations even in modulation instability regime. The further analysis indicates that the solitons in modulational instability regime are caused by the fourth-order effects.

Optical rogue waves and W-shaped solitons in the multiple self-induced transparency system

We study localized nonlinear waves on a plane wave background in the multiple self-induced transparency (SIT) system, which describes an important enhancement of the amplification and control of optical waves compared to the single SIT system. A hierarchy of exact multiparametric rational solutions in a compact determinant representation are presented. We demonstrate that, this family of solutions contains known rogue wave solution and unusual W-shaped soliton solution, which strictly corresponds to the linear stability analysis that involves modulation instability and stability regimes in the low perturbation frequency region. State transitions between rogue waves and W-shaped solitons as well as the higher-order nonlinear superposition modes are revealed by the suitable choice for the background wavenumber of electric field component. In particular, our results show that, the multiple SIT system admits stationary and nonstationary nonlinear modes in contrast to the results in the single SIT system. Correspondingly, the important characteristics of the nonlinear waves including trajectories and spectrum are revealed in detail.

Interface induced high temperature superconductivity in single unit-cell FeSe films on SrTiO3(110)

We report high temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe films grown on STO(110) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. By in-situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we observed a superconducting gap as large as 17 meV. Transport measurements on 1-UC FeSe/STO(110) capped with FeTe layers reveal superconductivity with an onset TC of 31.6 K and an upper critical magnetic field of 30.2 T. We also find that the TC can be further increased by an external electric field, but the effect is smaller than that on STO(001) substrate. The study points out the important roles of interface related charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling in the high temperature superconductivity of FeSe/STO.

Methane Incorporation into Liquid Fuel by Non-Equilibrium Plasma Discharges

The conventional ways of processing natural gas into more efficient and economical fuels usually either have low conversion rate or low energy efficiency. In this work, a new approach of methane liquefaction is proposed. Instead of direct treatment of only natural gas, plasma activated methane is reacting with liquid fuel. In this way, methane molecules are directly incorporated onto liquid fuel to achieve liquefaction. Nanosecond-pulsed dielectric barrier discharge and atmospheric pressure glow discharge are used here to ensure no local heating in gas bubbles. Effects of both discharges on methane reaction with liquid fuel are investigated, mass and chemical changes in liquid are observed. Preliminary results show fixation of methane in liquid fuel.

Symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime

We study symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime of a single-mode fiber. Key characteristics of such multi-peak solitons, as the formation mechanism, propagation stability, and shape-changing collisions, are revealed in detail. Our results show that this multi-peak (symmetric or asymmetric) mode could be regarded as a single pulse formed by a nonlinear superposition of a periodic wave and a single-peak (W-shaped or antidark) soliton. In particular, a phase diagram for different types of nonlinear excitations on a continuous wave background including breather, rogue wave, W-shaped soliton, antidark soliton, periodic wave, and multi-peak soliton is established based on the explicit link between exact nonlinear wave solution and modulation instability analysis. Numerical simulations are performed to confirm the propagation stability of the multi-peak solitons with symmetric and asymmetric structures. Further, we unveil a remarkable shape-changing feature of asymmetric multi-peak solitons. It is interesting that these shape-changing interactions occur not only in the intraspecific collision (soliton mutual collision) but also in the interspecific interaction (soliton-breather interaction). Our results demonstrate that each multi-peak soliton exhibits the coexistence of shape change and conservation of the localized energy of light pulse against the continuous wave background.

Breather transition dynamics, Peregrine combs/walls and modulation instability in a variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation with higher-order effects

We study a variable-coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger (vc-NLS) equation with higher-order effects. We show that the breather solution can be converted into four types of nonlinear waves on constant backgrounds including the multi-peak solitons, antidark soliton, periodic wave and W-shaped soliton. The transition condition requiring the group velocity dispersion (GVD) and third-order dispersion (TOD) to scale linearly is obtained analytically. We display several kinds of elastic interactions between the transformed nonlinear waves. We discuss the dispersion management of multi-peak soliton, which indicates that the GVD coefficient controls the number of peaks of the wave while the TOD coefficient has compression effect. The gain or loss has influence on the amplitudes of the multi-peak soliton. We further derive the breather multiple births by using multiple compression points of Akhmediev breathers in optical fiber systems with periodic dispersion. The number of ABs depends on the amplitude of the modulation but not on its wavelength, which affects their separation distance. In the limiting case, the breather multiple births reduce to the Peregrine combs. We discuss the effects of TOD coefficient on the spatiotemporal characteristics of Peregrine combs. When the amplitude of the modulation is equal to 1, the Peregrine comb is converted into a Peregrine wall that can be seen as intermediate state between rogue wave and W-shaped soliton. We finally find that the modulational stability regions with zero growth rate coincide with the transition condition using rogue wave eigenvalues. Our results could be useful for the experimental control and manipulation of the formation of generalized Peregrine rogue waves in diverse physical systems modeled by vc-NLS equation with higher-order effects.

Prolific interaction structures and shape-changing collisions in an erbium-doped fiber system

Prolific interactions of nonlinear waves on a plane-wave background in an erbium-doped fiber system are unveiled, based on explicit coexistence conditions extracting from the general higher-order solution of a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger and the Maxwell-Bloch equations. In contrast to previous results, it shows that rich different types of nonlinear waves can coexist and interact with each other. In particular, we reveal an interesting kind of shape-changing collision, in which the multi-peak solitons exhibit intensity redistribution characteristics. This interaction involves the mutual collision between multi-peak solitons as well as the interplay of multi-peak soliton and other types of localized nonlinear waves (breather and antidark soliton). We find that the shape-changing collision preserves the power of each multi-peak soliton, which is verified via optimal numerical integration for the energy of light pulse against the plane-wave background. Our results demonstrate that when the interactions occur, each multi-peak soliton exhibits the coexistence of the shape change and energy conservation.

Different types of nonlinear localized and periodic waves in an erbium-doped fiber system

We study nonlinear waves on a plane-wave background in an erbium-doped fiber system, which is governed by the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger and the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We find that prolific different types of nonlinear localized and periodic waves do exist in the system, including multi-peak soliton, periodic wave, antidark soliton, and W-shaped soliton (as well as the known bright soliton, breather, and rogue wave). In particular, the dynamics of these waves can be extracted from a unified exact solution, and the corresponding existence conditions are presented explicitly. Our results demonstrate the structural diversity of the nonlinear waves in this system.

Atomically Resolved FeSe/SrTiO3(001) Interface Structure by Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy

Interface-enhanced high-temperature superconductivity in one unit-cell (UC) FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) (STO) substrate has recently attracted much attention in condensed matter physics and material science. By combined in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and ex-situ scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) studies, we report on atomically resolved structure including both lattice constants and actual atomic positions of the FeSe/STO interface under both non-superconducting and superconducting states. We observed TiO2 double layers (DLs) and significant atomic displacements in the top two layers of STO, lattice compression of the Se-Fe-Se triple layer, and relative shift between bottom Se and topmost Ti atoms. By imaging the interface structures under various superconducting states, we unveil a close correlation between interface structure and superconductivity. Our atomic-scale identification of FeSe/STO interface structure provides useful information on investigating the pairing mechanism of this interface-enhanced high-temperature superconducting system.

Superconductivity dichotomy in K-coated single and double unit cell FeSe films on SrTiO3

We report the superconductivity evolution of one unit cell (1-UC) and 2-UC FeSe films on SrTiO3(001) substrates with potassium (K) adsorption. By in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurement, we find that the superconductivity in 1-UC FeSe films is continuously suppressed with increasing K coverage, whereas non-superconducting 2-UC FeSe films become superconducting with a gap of ~17 meV or ~11 meV depending on whether the underlying 1-UC films are superconducting or not. This work explicitly reveals that the interface electron-phonon coupling is strongly related to the charge transfer at FeSe/STO interface and plays vital role in enhancing Cooper pairing in both 1-UC and 2-UC FeSe films.
