When Symmetries Twist: Anomaly Inflow on Monodromy Defects

Monodromy defects describe a dynamical termination of topological symmetry operators, and are sourced by a localized background magnetic flux. We study their properties in gapped SPT phases and, by inflow, in gapless theories with an anomalous symmetry. The background flux acts as a source for the anomaly, impacting the definition of the monodromy defect, which can only be defined as a domain wall between the symmetry generator and a topological order induced by the anomaly. The topological dressing has several consequences, such as the presence of protected chiral edge modes on the defect's worldvolume, and the adiabatic pumping of gapless degrees of freedom bound to the localized flux. We verify our predictions in several examples, focusing on monodromy defects for anomalous chiral symmetries, both in the continuum and on the lattice.

A Twist on Scattering from Defect Anomalies

In the presence of extended defects, familiar incoming particles can scatter into exotic outgoing states created by twist operators. We show that one possible mechanism driving these "categorical scattering" processes is the presence of localized 't Hooft anomalies on the defect's worldvolume. Defect anomalies trap non-trivial charges at junctions between the symmetry lines and the interface, opening new transmission channels that would naively appear to violate selection rules. After outlining the general mechanism, we investigate several concrete examples with defects, interfaces, and boundaries. For models of massless chiral fermions already studied in the literature, we show that the emergence of twist operators can be understood as a consequence of defect anomalies. We then introduce new massive integrable theories in which a similar phenomenon occurs, and we explicitly solve the associated scattering problem, obtaining new integrable solutions. Finally, we construct lattice spin chains with defects where similar physics is expected to arise.

F-theorem for Quantum Field Theories in Anti-de Sitter Space

We introduce a regularized free energy $\mathcal{F}_{\text{AdS}}$ for massive quantum field theories (QFTs) on Anti-de Sitter space (AdS). We conjecture this quantity to be monotonic under the renormalization group (RG) flow induced by boundary perturbations, generalizing the known boundary $F$-theorem to non-conformal setups. We test this conjecture in several examples and provide a proof in two dimensions. We also discuss applications to long-range critical points, obtaining bounds on the sphere free energy of long- and short-range Ising models in three dimensions.

Categorical Anomaly Matching

Matching 't Hooft anomalies is a powerful tool for constraining the low-energy dynamics of quantum systems and their allowed renormalization group (RG) flows. For non-invertible (or categorical) symmetries, however, a key challenge has been the lack of a precise framework to characterize and quantify anomalies. We address this by identifying tensor functors between UV and IR symmetry categories as central to capturing these constraints. To this end, we introduce Anomalous Simple Categories (ASCies) as fundamental building blocks of categorical anomalies. A given symmetry category may support multiple ASCies, each encoding distinct anomalous features. These structures naturally arise in the context of the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT), where tensor functors correspond to RG-interfaces between UV and IR SymTFTs, and ASCies are realized as particular such interfaces satisfying simple, universal criteria. We demonstrate the utility of this framework through examples involving anomalous 0-form, higher-form, and crucially, non-invertible symmetries in various spacetime dimensions.

't Hooft Anomalies and Defect Conformal Manifolds: Topological Signatures from Modulated Effective Actions

Symmetry breaking of continuous symmetries by extended dynamical defects entails the existence of defect families, which form conformal manifolds in a critical setup. In the presence of bulk 't Hooft anomalies, defects are in fact required to break the symmetry: defect conformal manifolds are anomaly-enforced. We show that, by coupling the system to a modulated deformation parameter, the geometric structure of the conformal manifold is sensitive to the 't Hooft anomaly. This leads to measurable effects in the presence of a boundary/defect: in (1+1)d the anomaly predicts a quantized boundary charge pumping, while in higher dimensions it gives rise to non-dissipative boundary Hall currents.

$\mathcal{N}=2$ Super Yang-Mills in AdS$_4$ and $F_{\text{AdS}}$-maximization

We investigate the dynamics of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ super Yang--Mills theory on an AdS background. We propose that the boundary conditions that preserve the AdS super-isometries are determined by maximizing the real part of the AdS partition function $F_{\text{AdS}}=-\log Z_{\text{AdS}}$. At weak coupling $\Lambda L \ll 1$ the maximization singles out the Dirichlet boundary condition with an $SU(2)$ boundary global symmetry, corresponding to the classical vacuum at the origin of the Coulomb branch with fully un-higgsed gauge group. We find that for $\Lambda L \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$ new boundary conditions are favored, with gauge-group higgsed down to $U(1)$, matching the expectation from the flat space limit. We use supersymmetric localization to compute $Z_{\text{AdS}}$ nonperturbatively. We further provide evidence for a relation between $F_{\text{AdS}}$ and the $\mathcal{N}=2$ prepotential in AdS background.

Defect Conformal Manifolds from Phantom (Non-Invertible) Symmetries

We explore a general mechanism that allows (1+1)d CFTs to have interesting interface conformal manifolds even in the absence of any continuous internal symmetry or supersymmetry. This is made possible by the breaking of an enhanced continuous symmetry, which is generically non-invertible, arising in the folded theory. We provide several examples and showcase the power of the symmetry-based approach by computing the evolution of the reflection coefficient along the defect conformal manifold. We also discuss higher-dimensional generalizations and we comment on no-go theorems.

Topological Constraints on Defect Dynamics

Extended objects (defects) in Quantum Field Theory exhibit rich, nontrivial dynamics describing a variety of physical phenomena. These systems often involve strong coupling at long distances, where the bulk and defects interact, making analytical studies challenging. By carefully analyzing the behavior of bulk symmetries in the presence of defects, we uncover robust topological constraints on defect RG flows. Specifically, we introduce the notions of $\textit{defect anomalies}$ and $\textit{symmetry reflecting defects}$, both of which are RG-invariant. Several known notions, such as higher-form symmetries, fractionalization, and projective lines, are revealed to be manifestations of defect anomalies, which also encompass novel phenomena and forbid trivial defect dynamics in the IR. Meanwhile, symmetry reflecting defects are shown to remain coupled at low energies, imposing powerful dynamical constraints. We verify our findings through concrete examples: exactly solvable defect RG flows in (1+1)d Conformal Field Theories with symmetry reflecting lines and a surface defect in (2+1)d scalar QED.

Boundary SymTFT

We study properties of boundary conditions (BCs) in theories with categorical (or non-invertible) symmetries. We describe how the transformation properties, or (generalized) charges, of BCs are captured by topological BCs of Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT), which is a topological field theory in one higher spacetime dimension. As an application of the SymTFT chracterization, we discuss the symmetry properties of boundary conditions for (1+1)d gapped and gapless phases. We provide a number of concrete examples in spacetime dimensions $d=2,3$. We furthermore expand the lattice description for (1+1)d anyon chains with categorical symmetries to include boundary conditions carrying arbitrary 1-charges under the symmetry.

S-Matrix Bootstrap and Non-Invertible Symmetries

We initiate the S-matrix bootstrap analysis of theories with non-invertible symmetries in (1+1) dimensions. Our previous work showed that crossing symmetry of S-matrices in such theories is modified, with modification characterized by the fusion category data. By imposing unitarity, symmetry and the modified crossing, we constrain the space of consistent S-matrices, identifying integrable theories with non-invertible symmetries at the cusps of allowed regions. We also extend the modified crossing rules to cases where vacua transform in non-regular representations of fusion category, utilizing a connection to a dual category $\mathscr C^{*}_{\mathscr{M}}$ and Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT). This highlights the utility of SymTFT in the analysis of scattering amplitudes.

SymTFT for (3+1)d Gapless SPTs and Obstructions to Confinement

We study gapless phases in (3+1)d in the presence of 1-form and non-invertible duality symmetries. Using the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) approach, we classify the gapless symmetry-protected (gSPT) phases in these setups, with particular focus on intrinsically gSPTs (igSPTs). These are symmetry protected critical points which cannot be deformed to a trivially gapped phase without spontaneously breaking the symmetry. Although these are by now well-known in (1+1)d, we demonstrate their existence in (3+1)d gauge theories. Here, they have a clear physical interpretation in terms of an obstruction to confinement, even though the full 1-form symmetry does not suffer from 't Hooft anomalies. These igSPT phases provide a new way to realize 1-form symmetries in CFTs, that has no analog for gapped phases. The SymTFT approach allows for a direct generalization from invertible symmetries to non-invertible duality symmetries, for which we study gSPT and igSPT phases as well. We accompany these theoretical results with concrete physical examples realizing such phases and explain how obstruction to confinement is detected at the level of symmetric deformations.

Defect Charges, Gapped Boundary Conditions, and the Symmetry TFT

We offer a streamlined and computationally powerful characterization of higher representations (higher charges) for defect operators under generalized symmetries, employing the powerful framework of Symmetry TFT $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$. For a defect $\mathscr{D}$ of codimension p, these representations (charges) are in one-to-one correspondence with gapped boundary conditions for the SymTFT $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ on a manifold $Y = \Sigma_{d-p+1} \times S^{p-1}$, and can be efficiently described through dimensional reduction. We explore numerous applications of our construction, including scenarios where an anomalous bulk theory can host a symmetric defect. This generalizes the connection between 't Hooft anomalies and the absence of symmetric boundary conditions to defects of any codimension. Finally we describe some properties of surface charges for (3 + 1)d duality symmetries, which should be relevant to the study of Gukov-Witten operators in gauge theories.

Non-Invertible Symmetries, Anomalies and Scattering Amplitudes

We show that crossing symmetry of S-matrices is modified in certain theories with non-invertible symmetries or anomalies. Focusing on integrable flows to gapped phases in two dimensions, we find that S-matrices derived previously from the bootstrap approach are incompatible with non-invertible symmetries along the flow. We present consistent alternatives, which however violate standard crossing symmetry and obey modified rules dictated by fusion categories. We extend these rules to theories with discrete anomalies.

Taming Mass Gap with Anti-de-Sitter Space

Anti-de-Sitter space acts as an infra-red cut off for asymptotically free theories, allowing interpolation between a weakly-coupled small-sized regime and a strongly-coupled flat-space regime. We scrutinize the interpolation for theories in two dimensions from the perspective of boundary conformal theories. We show that the appearance of a singlet marginal operator destabilizes a gapless phase existing at a small size, triggering a boundary renormalization group flow to a gapped phase that smoothly connects to flat space. We conjecture a similar mechanism for confinement in gauge theories.

Anomalies of non-invertible self-duality symmetries: fractionalization and gauging

We study anomalies of non-invertible duality symmetries in both 2d and 4d, employing the tool of the Symmetry TFT. In the 2d case we rephrase the known obstruction theory for the Tambara-Yamagami fusion category in a way easily generalizable to higher dimensions. In both cases we find two obstructions to gauging duality defects. The first obstruction requires the existence of a duality-invariant Lagrangian algebra in a certain Dijkgraaf-Witten theory in one dimension more. In particular, intrinsically non-invertible (a.k.a. group theoretical) duality symmetries are necessarily anomalous. The second obstruction requires the vanishing of a pure anomaly for the invertible duality symmetry. This however depends on further data. In 2d this is specified by a choice of equivariantization for the duality-invariant Lagrangian algebra. We propose and verify that this is equivalent to a choice of symmetry fractionalization for the invertible duality symmetry. The latter formulation has a natural generalization to 4d and allows us to give a compact characterization of the anomaly. We comment on various possible applications of our results to self-dual theories.

Higher Structure of Chiral Symmetry

A recent development in our understanding of the theory of quantum fields is the fact that familiar gauge theories in spacetime dimensions greater than two can have non-invertible symmetries generated by topological defects. The hallmark of these non-invertible symmetries is that the fusion rule deviates from the usual group-like structure, and in particular the fusion coefficients take values in topological field theories (TFTs) rather than in mere numbers. In this paper we begin an exploration of the associativity structure of non-invertible symmetries in higher dimensions. The first layer of associativity is captured by F-symbols, which we find to assume values in TFTs that have one dimension lower than that of the defect. We undertake an explicit analysis of the F-symbols for the non-invertible chiral symmetry that is preserved by the massless QED and explore their physical implications. In particular, we show the F-symbol TFTs can be detected by probing the correlators of topological defects with 't Hooft lines. Furthermore, we derive the Ward-Takahashi identity that arises from the chiral symmetry on a large class of four-dimensional manifolds with non-trivial topologies directly from the topological data of the symmetry defects, without referring to a Lagrangian formulation of the theory.

Non-invertible symmetries along 4d RG flows

We explore novel examples of RG flows preserving a non-invertible self-duality symmetry. Our main focus is on $\mathcal{N}=1$ quadratic superpotential deformations of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory with gauge algebra $\mathfrak{su}(N)$. A theory that can be obtained in this way is the so-called $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM where all adjoint chiral multiplets have a mass. Such IR theory exhibits a rich structure of vacua which we thoroughly examine. Our analysis elucidates the physics of spontaneous breaking of self-duality symmetry occurring in the degenerate gapped vacua. The construction can be generalized, taking as UV starting point a theory of class $\mathcal{S}$, to demonstrate how non-invertible self-duality symmetries exist in a variety of $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs. We finally apply this understanding to prove that the conifold theory has a non-invertible self-duality symmetry.

"Zoology" of non-invertible duality defects: the view from class $\mathcal{S}$

We study generalizations of the non-invertible duality defects present in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SU(N) SYM by studying theories with larger duality groups. We focus on 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ obtained by the dimensional reduction of the 6d $\mathcal{N} = (2, 0)$ theory of $A_{N-1}$ type on a Riemann surface $\Sigma_g$ without punctures. We discuss their non-invertible duality symmetries and provide two ways to compute their fusion algebra: either using discrete topological manipulations or a 5d TQFT description. We also introduce the concept of "rank" of a non-invertible duality symmetry and show how it can be used to (almost) completely fix the fusion algebra with little computational effort.
