The holography of non-invertible self-duality symmetries

We study how non-invertible self-duality defects arise in theories with a holographic dual. We focus on the paradigmatic example of $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM. The theory is known to have non-invertible duality and triality defects at $τ=i$ and $τ= e^{2 πi /3}$, respectively. At these points in the gravitational moduli space, the gauged $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality symmetry of type IIB string theory is spontaneously broken to a finite subgroup $G$, giving rise to a discrete emergent $G$ gauge field. After reduction on the internal manifold, the low-energy physics is dominated by an interesting 5d Chern-Simons theory, further gauged by $G$, that we analyze and which gives rise to the self-duality defects in the boundary theory. Using the five-dimensional bulk theory, we compute the fusion rules of those defects in detail. The methods presented here are general and may be used to investigate such symmetries in other theories with a gravity dual.

Delayed Deconfinement and the Hawking-Page Transition

We revisit the confinement/deconfinement transition in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory and its relation to the Hawking-Page transition in gravity. Recently there has been substantial progress on counting the microstates of 1/16-BPS extremal black holes. However, there is presently a mismatch between the Hawking-Page transition and its avatar in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. This led to speculations about the existence of new gravitational saddles that would resolve the mismatch. Here we exhibit a phenomenon in complex matrix models which we call "delayed deconfinement". It turns out that when the action is complex, due to destructive interference, tachyonic modes do not necessarily condense. We demonstrate this phenomenon in ordinary integrals, a simple unitary matrix model, and finally in the context of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. Delayed deconfinement implies a first-order transition, in contrast to the more familiar cases of higher-order transitions in unitary matrix models. We determine the deconfinement line and find remarkable agreement with the prediction of gravity. On the way, we derive some results about the Gross-Witten-Wadia model with complex couplings. Our techniques apply to a wide variety of (SUSY and non-SUSY) gauge theories though in this paper we only discuss the case of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM.

Factorization and global symmetries in holography

We consider toy models of holography arising from 3d Chern-Simons theory. In this context a duality to an ensemble average over 2d CFTs has been recently proposed. We put forward an alternative approach in which, rather than summing over bulk geometries, one gauges a one-form global symmetry of the bulk theory. This accomplishes two tasks: it ensures that the bulk theory has no global symmetries, as expected for a theory of quantum gravity, and it makes the partition function on spacetimes with boundaries coincide with that of a modular-invariant 2d CFT on the boundary. In particular, on wormhole geometries one finds a factorized answer for the partition function. In the case of non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories, the relevant one-form symmetry is non-invertible, and its gauging corresponds to the condensation of a Lagrangian anyon.

Torsion and anomalies in the warped limit of Lifschitz theories

We describe the physics of fermionic Lifschitz theories once the anisotropicscaling exponent is made arbitrarily small. In this limit the system acquires an enhanced(Carrollian) boost symmetry. We show, both through the explicit computation of the pathintegral Jacobian and through the solution of the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, thatthe translation symmetry in the anisotropic direction becomes anomalous. This turns outto be a mixed anomaly between boosts and translations. In a Newton-Cartan formulationof the space-time geometry such anomaly is sourced by torsion. We use these results togive an effective field theory description of the anomalous transport coefficients, which wereoriginally computed through Kubo formulas in [1]. Along the way we provide a link withwarped CFTs.

Anomalous Hall viscosity at the Weyl semimetal/insulator transition

We show that 3D Lifshitz fermions arising as the critical theory at the Weyl semimetal/insulator transition naturally develop an anomalous Hall viscosity at finite temperature. We discuss how to couple the system to non-relativistic background sources for stress-tensor and momentum currents via a form of Newton-Cartan geometry with torsion and derive the Kubo formulas for the Hall viscosities. While the Lifshitz system that arises most naturally has scaling exponent $z=2$ we also generalize the theory for arbitrary Lifshitz scaling $z$ and show that, in the limit $z \to 0$, it may be given a Chern-Simons interpretation by dimensionally reducing along the anisotropic direction. The Hall viscosities are expressed in terms of zeta functions and their temperature dependence is dictated by the scaling exponent.

Higher spin vortical Zilches from Kubo formulae

We compute thermal one point functions in Maxwell's theory sourced by vorticity for the Zilch and its higher spin extensions via the Kubo formalism. This leads to a generalization of the recent results of \citep{Chernodub:2018era} to any spin and their value suggests a relation with possible anomalies for the higher spin tower of currents.

Membrane paradigm and RG flows for anomalous holographic theories

Holographic RG flows can be better understood with the help of radially conserved charges. It was shown by various authors that the bulk gauge and diffeomorphism symmetries lead to the conservation of the zero mode of the holographic U(1) current and, if the spacetime is stationary, to that of the holographic heat current. In describing dual theories with t Hooft anomalies the bulk gauge invariance is broken by Chern-Simons terms. We show that conservation laws can still be derived and used to characterize the anomalous transport in terms of membrane currents at the horizon. We devote particular attention to systems with gravitational anomalies. These are known to be problematic due to their higher derivative content. We show that this feature alters the construction of the membrane currents in a way which is deeply tied with the anomalous gravitational transport.

Anomalous transport and holographic momentum relaxation

The chiral magnetic and vortical effects denote the generation of dissipationless currents due to magnetic fields or rotation. They can be studied in holographic models with Chern-Simons couplings dual to anomalies in field theory. We study a holographic model with translation symmetry breaking based on linear massless scalar field backgrounds. We compute the electric DC conductivity and find that it can vanish for certain values of the translation symmetry breaking couplings. Then we compute the chiral magnetic and chiral vortical conductivities. They are completely independent of the holographic disorder couplings and take the usual values in terms of chemical potential and temperature. To arrive at this result we suggest a new definition of energy-momentum tensor in presence of the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling.

Axial Hall effect and universality of holographic Weyl semi-metals

The holographic Weyl semimetal is a model of a strongly coupled topological semi-metal. A topological quantum phase transition separates a topological phase with non-vanishing anomalous Hall conductivity from a trivial state. We investigate how this phase transition depends on the parameters of the scalar potential (mass and quartic self coupling) finding that the quantum phase transition persists for a large region in parameter space. We then compute the axial Hall conductivity. The algebraic structure of the axial anomaly predicts it to be 1/3 of the electric Hall conductivity. We find that this holds once a non-trivial renormalization effect on the external axial gauge fields is taken into account. Finally we show that the phase transition also occurs in a top-down model based on a consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity.
