Variable coefficient Wolff-type inequalities and sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on manifolds

The sharp Wolff-type decoupling estimates of Bourgain--Demeter are extended to the variable coefficient setting. These results are applied to obtain new sharp local smoothing estimates for wave equations on compact Riemannian manifolds, away from the endpoint regularity exponent. More generally, local smoothing estimates are established for a natural class of Fourier integral operators; at this level of generality the results are sharp in odd dimensions, both in terms of the regularity exponent and the Lebesgue exponent.

Quasimode, eigenfunction and spectral projection bounds for Schrödinger operators on manifolds with critically singular potentials

We obtain quasimode, eigenfunction and spectral projection bounds for Schrödinger operators, $H_V=-Δ_g+V(x)$, on compact Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ of dimension $n\ge2$, which extend the results of the third author~\cite{sogge88} corresponding to the case where $V\equiv 0$. We are able to handle critically singular potentials and consequently assume that $V\in L^{\tfrac{n}2}(M)$ and/or $V\in {\mathcal K}(M)$ (the Kato class). Our techniques involve combining arguments for proving quasimode/resolvent estimates for the case where $V\equiv 0$ that go back to the third author \cite{sogge88} as well as ones which arose in the work of Kenig, Ruiz and this author~\cite{KRS} in the study of "uniform Sobolev estimates" in ${\mathbb R}^n$. We also use techniques from more recent developments of several authors concerning variations on the latter theme in the setting of compact manifolds. Using the spectral projection bounds we can prove a number of natural $L^p\to L^p$ spectral multiplier theorems under the assumption that $V\in L^{\frac{n}2}(M)\cap {\mathcal K}(M)$. Moreover, we can also obtain natural analogs of the original Strichartz estimates~\cite{Strichartz77} for solutions of $(\partial_t^2-Δ+V)u=0$. We also are able to obtain analogous results in ${\mathbb R}^n$ and state some global problems that seem related to works on absence of embedded eigenvalues for Schrödinger operators in ${\mathbb R}^n$ (e.g., \cite{IonescuJerison}, \cite{JK}, \cite{KenigNar}, \cite{KochTaEV} and \cite{iRodS}.)

Approximating Pointwise Products of Laplacian Eigenfunctions

We consider Laplacian eigenfunctions on a $d-$dimensional bounded domain $M$ (or a $d-$dimensional compact manifold $M$) with Dirichlet conditions. These operators give rise to a sequence of eigenfunctions $(e_\ell)_{\ell \in \mathbb{N}}$. We study the subspace of all pointwise products $$ A_n = \mbox{span} \left\{ e_i(x) e_j(x): 1 \leq i,j \leq n\right\} \subseteq L^2(M).$$ Clearly, that vector space has dimension $\mbox{dim}(A_n) = n(n+1)/2$. We prove that products $e_i e_j$ of eigenfunctions are simple in a certain sense: for any $\varepsilon > 0$, there exists a low-dimensional vector space $B_n$ that almost contains all products. More precisely, denoting the orthogonal projection $Π_{B_n}:L^2(M) \rightarrow B_n$, we have $$ \forall~1 \leq i,j \leq n~ \qquad \|e_ie_j - Π_{B_n}( e_i e_j) \|_{L^2} \leq \varepsilon$$ and the size of the space $\mbox{dim}(B_n)$ is relatively small: for every $δ> 0$, $$ \mbox{dim}(B_n) \lesssim_{M,δ} \varepsilon^{-δ} n^{1+δ}.$$ We obtain the same sort of bounds for products of arbitrary length, as well for approximation in $H^{-1}$ norm. Pointwise products of eigenfunctions are low-rank. This has implications, among other things, for the validity of fast algorithms in electronic structure computations.

Logarithmic improvements in $L^{p}$ bounds for eigenfunctions at the critical exponent in the presence of nonpositive curvature

We consider the problem of proving $L^p$ bounds for eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in the high frequency limit in the presence of nonpositive curvature and more generally, manifolds without conjugate points. In particular, we prove estimates at the "critical exponent" $p_c = \frac{2(d+1)}{d-1}$, where a spectrum of scenarios for phase space concentration must be ruled out. Our work establishes a gain of an inverse power of the logarithm of the frequency in the bounds relative to the classical $L^p$ bounds of the second author.

Refined and Microlocal Kakeya-Nikodym Bounds of Eigenfunctions in Higher Dimensions

We prove a Kakeya-Nikodym bound on eigenfunctions and quasimodes, which sharpens a result of the authors and extends it to higher dimensions. As in the prior work, the key intermediate step is to prove a microlocal version of these estimates, which involves a phase space decomposition of these modes which is essentially invariant under the bicharacteristic/geodesic flow. In a companion paper, it will be seen that these sharpened estimates yield improved $L^q(M)$ bounds on eigenfunctions in the presence of nonpositive curvature when $2 < q < \frac{2(d+1)}{d-1}$.

On Instability of the Nikodym Maximal Function bounds over Riemannian Manifolds

We show that, for odd $d$, the $L^{\frac{d+2}2}$ bounds of Sogge and Xi for the Nikodym maximal function over manifolds of constant sectional curvature, are unstable with respect to metric perturbation, in the spirit of the work of Sogge and Minicozzi. A direct consequence is the instability of the bounds for the corresponding oscillatory integral operator. Furthermore, we extend our construction to show that the same phenomenon appears for any $d$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a local totally geodesic submanifold of dimension $\lceil{\frac{d+1}2}\rceil$ if $d\ge 3$. In contrast, Sogge's $L^\frac73$ bound for the Nikodym maximal function on 3-dimensional variably curved manifolds is stable with respect to metric perturbation.

Geodesic period integrals of eigenfunctions on Riemannian surfaces and the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem

We use the Gauss-Bonnet theorem and the triangle comparison theorems of Rauch and Toponogov to show that on compact Riemann surfaces of negative curvature period integrals of eigenfunctions $e_λ$ over geodesics go to zero at the rate of $O((\logλ)^{-1/2})$ if $λ$ are their frequencies. As discussed in \cite{CSPer}, no such result is possible in the constant curvature case if the curvature is $\ge0$. Notwithstanding, we also show that these bounds for period integrals are valid provided that integrals of the curvature over all geodesic balls of radius $r\le 1$ are pinched from above by $-δr^N$ for some fixed $N$ and $δ>0$. This allows, for instance, the curvature to be nonpositive and to vanish of finite order at a finite number of isolated points. Naturally, the above results also hold for the appropriate type of quasi-modes.

Localized $L^p$-estimates for eigenfunctions: II

If $(M,g)$ is a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\ge 2$ we give necessary and sufficient conditions for improved $L^p(M)$-norms of eigenfunctions for all $2<p\ne p_c=\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$, the critical exponent. Since improved $L^{p_c}(M)$ bounds imply improvement all other exponents, these conditions are necessary for improved bounds for the critical space. We also show that improved $L^{p_c}(M)$ bounds are valid if these conditions are met and if the half-wave operators, $U(t)$, have no caustics when $t\ne 0$. The problem of finding a necessary and sufficient condition for $L^{p_c}(M)$ improvement remains an interesting open problem.

Improved critical eigenfunction estimates on manifolds of nonpositive curvature

We prove new improved endpoint, $L^{p_c}$, $p_c=\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$, estimates (the "kink point") for eigenfunctions on manifolds of nonpositive curvature. We do this by using energy and dispersive estimates for the wave equation as well as new improved $L^p$, $2<p< p_c$, bounds of Blair and the author \cite{BSTop}, \cite{BSK15} and the classical improved sup-norm estimates of Bérard~\cite{Berard}. Our proof uses Bourgain's \cite{BKak} proof of weak-type estimates for the Stein-Tomas Fourier restriction theorem \cite{Tomas}--\cite{Tomas2} as a template to be able to obtain improved weak-type $L^{p_c}$ estimates under this geometric assumption. We can then use these estimates and the (local) improved Lorentz space estimates of Bak and Seeger~\cite{BakSeeg} (valid for all manifolds) to obtain our improved estimates for the critical space under the assumption of nonpositive sectional curvatures.

Concerning Toponogov's Theorem and logarithmic improvement of estimates of eigenfunctions

We use Toponogov's triangle comparison theorem from Riemannian geometry along with quantitative scale oriented variants of classical propagation of singularities arguments to obtain logarithmic improvements of the Kakeya-Nikodym norms introduced in \cite{SKN} for manifolds of nonpositive sectional curvature. Using these and results from our paper \cite{BS15} we are able to obtain log-improvements of $L^p(M)$ estimates for such manifolds when $2<p<\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$. These in turn imply $(\logλ)^{σ_n}$, $σ_n\approx n$, improved lower bounds for $L^1$-norms of eigenfunctions of the estimates of the second author and Zelditch~\cite{SZ11}, and using a result from Hezari and the second author~\cite{HS}, under this curvature assumption, we are able to improve the lower bounds for the size of nodal sets of Colding and Minicozzi~\cite{CM} by a factor of $(\log λ)^μ$ for any $μ<\tfrac{2(n+1)^2}{n-1}$, if $n\ge3$.

Problems related to the concentration of eigenfunctions

We survey recent results related to the concentration of eigenfunctions. We also prove some new results concerning ball-concentration, as well as showing that eigenfunctions saturating lower bounds for $L^1$-norms must also, in a measure theoretical sense, have extreme concentration near a geodesic.

Lower bounds for interior nodal sets of Steklov eigenfunctions

We study the interior nodal sets, $Z_λ$ of Steklov eigenfunctions in an $n$-dimensional relatively compact manifolds $M$ with boundary and show that one has the lower bounds $|Z_λ|\ge cλ^{\frac{2-n}2}$ for the size of its $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. The proof is based on a Dong-type identity and estimates for the gradient of Steklov eigenfunctions, similar to those in \cite{SZ1} and \cite{SZ2}, respectively.

Localized $L^p$-estimates of eigenfunctions: A note on an article of Hezari and Rivière

We use a straightforward variation on a recent argument of Hezari and Rivière~\cite{HR} to obtain localized $L^p$-estimates for all exponents larger than or equal to the critical exponent $p_c=\tfrac{2(n+1)}{n-1}$. We are able to this directly by just using the $L^{p}$-bounds for spectral projection operators from our much earlier work \cite{Seig}. The localized bounds we obtain here imply, for instance, that, for a density one sequence of eigenvalues on a manifold whose geodesic flow is ergodic, all of the $L^p$, $2<p\le \infty$, bounds of the corresponding eigenfunctions are relatively small compared to the general ones in \cite{Seig}, which are saturated on round spheres. The connection with quantum ergodicity was established for exponents $2<p<p_c$ in the recent results of the author \cite{SK} and Blair and the author \cite{BS2}; however, the article of Hezari and Rivière~\cite{HR} was the first one to make this connection (in the case of negatively curved manifolds) for the critical exponent, $p_c$. As is well known, and we indicate here, bounds for the critical exponent, $p_c$, imply ones for all of the other exponents $2<p\le \infty$. The localized estimates involve $L^2$-norms over small geodesic balls $B_r$ of radius $r$, and we shall go over what happens for these in certain model cases on the sphere and on manifolds of nonpositive curvature. We shall also state a problem as to when one can improve on the trivial $O(r^{\frac12})$ estimates for these $L^2(B_r)$ bounds. If $r=λ^{-1}$, one can improve on the trivial estimates if one has improved $L^{p_c}(M)$ bounds just by using Hölder's inequality; however, obtaining improved bounds for $r\gg λ^{-1}$ seems to be subtle.

Concerning $L^p$ resolvent estimates for simply connected manifolds of constant curvature

We prove families of uniform $(L^r,L^s)$ resolvent estimates for simply connected manifolds of constant curvature (negative or positive) that imply the earlier ones for Euclidean space of Kenig, Ruiz and the second author \cite{KRS}. In the case of the sphere we take advantage of the fact that the half-wave group of the natural shifted Laplacian is periodic. In the case of hyperbolic space, the key ingredient is a natural variant of the Stein-Tomas restriction theorem.

A note on $L^p$-norms of quasi-modes

In this note we show how improved $L^p$-estimates for certain types of quasi-modes are naturally equaivalent to improved operator norms of spectral projection operators associated to shrinking spectral intervals of the appropriate scale. Using this, one can see that recent estimates that were stated for eigenfunctions also hold for the appropriate types of quasi-modes.

Focal points and sup-norms of eigenfunctions

If $(M,g)$ is a compact real analytic Riemannian manifold, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for there to be a sequence of quasimodes of order $o(λ)$ saturating sup-norm estimates. In particular, it gives optimal conditions for existence of eigenfunctions satisfying maximal sup norm bounds. The condition is that there exists a self-focal point $x_0\in M$ for the geodesic flow at which the associated Perron-Frobenius operator $U_{x_0}: L^2(S_{x_0}^*M) \to L^2(S_{x_0}^*M)$ has a nontrivial invariant $L^2$ function. The proof is based on an explict Duistermaat-Guillemin-Safarov pre-trace formula and von Neumann's ergodic theorem.
