Valley Contrasting Magnetoluminescence in Monolayer MoS$_{2}$ Quantum Hall Systems

The valley dependent optical selection rules in recently discovered monolayer group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) make possible optical control of valley polarization, a crucial step towards valleytronic applications. However, in presence of Landaul level(LL) quantization such selection rules are taken over by selection rules between the LLs, which are not necessarily valley contrasting. Using MoS$_{2}$ as an example we show that the spatial inversion-symmetry breaking results in unusual valley dependent inter-LL selection rules, which directly locks polarization to valley. We find a systematic valley splitting for all Landau levels (LLs) in the quantum Hall regime, whose magnitude is linearly proportional to the magnetic field and in comparable with the LL spacing. Consequently, unique plateau structures are found in the optical Hall conductivity, which can be measured by the magneto-optical Faraday rotations.

Magnetic Control of Valley Pseudospin in Monolayer WSe2

Local energy extrema of the bands in momentum space, or valleys, can endow electrons in solids with pseudo-spin in addition to real spin. In transition metal dichalcogenides this valley pseudo-spin, like real spin, is associated with a magnetic moment which underlies the valley-dependent circular dichroism that allows optical generation of valley polarization, intervalley quantum coherence, and the valley Hall effect. However, magnetic manipulation of valley pseudospin via this magnetic moment, analogous to what is possible with real spin, has not been shown before. Here we report observation of the valley Zeeman splitting and magnetic tuning of polarization and coherence of the excitonic valley pseudospin, by performing polarization-resolved magneto-photoluminescence on monolayer WSe2. Our measurements reveal both the atomic orbital and lattice contributions to the valley orbital magnetic moment; demonstrate the deviation of the band edges in the valleys from an exact massive Dirac fermion model; and reveal a striking difference between the magnetic responses of neutral and charged valley excitons which is explained by renormalization of the excitonic spectrum due to strong exchange interactions.

Anisotropic Weyl Fermions from Quasiparticle Excitation Spectrum of a 3D Fulde-Ferrell Superfluid

Weyl fermions, first proposed for describing massless chiral Dirac fermions in particle physics, have not been observed yet in experiments. Recently, much effort has been devoted to explore Weyl fermions around band touching points of single particle energy dispersions in certain solid state materials (named \textit{Weyl semimetals}), similar as graphene for Dirac fermions. Here we show that such Weyl semimetals also exist in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum of a three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit coupled Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid. By varying Zeeman fields, the properties of Weyl fermions, such as their creation and annihilation, number and position, as well as anisotropic linear dispersions around band touching points, can be tuned. We study the manifestation of anisotropic Weyl fermions in sound speeds of FF fermionic superfluids, which are detectable in experiments.

SU(2) Ginzburg-Landau theory for degenerate Fermi gases with synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields

The non-Abelian gauge fields play a key role in achieving novel quantum phenomena in condensed-matter and high-energy physics. Recently, the synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields have been created in the neutral degenerate Fermi gases, and moreover, generate many exotic effects. All the previous predictions can be well understood by the microscopic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. In this work, we establish an SU(2) Ginzburg-Landau theory for degenerate Fermi gases with the synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields. We firstly address a fundamental problem how the non-Abelian gauge fields, imposing originally on the Fermi atoms, affect the pairing field with no extra electric charge by a local gauge-field theory, and then obtain the first and second SU(2) Ginzburg-Landau equations. Based on these obtained SU(2) Ginzburg-Landau equations, we find that the superfluid critical temperature of the intra- (inter-) band pairing increases (decreases) linearly, when increasing the strength of the synthetic non-Abelian gauge fields. More importantly, we predict a novel SU(2) non-Abelian Josephson effect, which can be used to design a new atomic superconducting quantum interference device.

Emergent Kinetics and Fractionalized Charge in 1D Spin-Orbit Coupled Flatband Optical Lattices

Recent ultracold atomic gas experiments implementing synthetic spin-orbit coupling allow access to flatbands that emphasize interactions. We model spin-orbit coupled fermions in a one-dimensional flatband optical lattice. We introduce an effective Luttinger-liquid theory to show that interactions generate collective excitations with emergent kinetics and fractionalized charge, analogous to properties found in the two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall regime. Observation of these excitations would provide an important platform for exploring exotic quantum states derived solely from interactions.

Dicke-type phase transition in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide a powerful tool to investigate interesting gauge-field related phenomena. We study the ground state properties of such a system and show that it can be mapped to the well-known Dicke model in quantum optics, which describes the interactions between an ensemble of atoms and an optical field. A central prediction of the Dicke model is a quantum phase transition between a superradiant phase and a normal phase. Here we detect this transition in a spin-orbit coupled BEC by measuring various physical quantities across the phase transition. These quantities include the spin polarization, the relative occupation of the nearly degenerate single particle states, the quantity analogous to the photon field occupation, and the period of a collective oscillation (quadrupole mode). The applicability of the Dicke model to spin-orbit coupled BECs may lead to interesting applications in quantum optics and quantum information science.

Competing superfluid orders in spin-orbit coupled fermionic cold atom optical lattices

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with non-zero total momentum Cooper pairs in a large magnetic field, was first predicted about 50 years ago, and since then became an important concept in many branches of physics. Despite intensive search in various materials, unambiguous experimental evidence for the FFLO phase is still lacking in experiments. In this paper, we show that both FF (uniform order parameter with plane-wave phase) and LO phase (spatially varying order parameter amplitude) can be observed using fermionic cold atoms in spin-orbit coupled optical lattices. The increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the FF phase over the LO phase. The coexistence of superfluid and magnetic orders is also found in the normal BCS phase. The pairing mechanism for different phases is understood by visualizing superfluid pairing densities in different spin-orbit bands. The possibility of observing similar physics using spin-orbit coupled superconducting ultra-thin films is also discussed.

Majorana fermions in quasi-1D and higher dimensional ultracold fermionic optical lattices

We show that Majorana fermions (MFs) exist in two- and three-dimensional (2D,3D) fermionic optical lattices with strictly 1D spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which has already been realized in ex- periments. For a quasi-1D topological BCS superfluid, there are multiple MFs at each end which are topologically protected by a chiral symmetry. In the generalization to higher dimensions, the multiple MFs form a zero energy flat band. An additional experimentally tunable in-plane Zeeman field drives the system to a topological Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid phase. We find that even though the multiple MFs are robust against the in-plane Zeeman field if the order parameters at the different chains are enforced to be identical, they are destroyed in the self-consistently obtained FF phase where the order parameters are inhomogeneous on the boundaries. Our results are useful to guide the experimentalists on searching for MFs in the context of ultracold fermionic atoms.

Phase Winding a Two-Component BEC in an Elongated Trap: Experimental Observation of Moving Magnetic Orders and Dark-bright Solitons

We experimentally investigate the phase winding dynamics of a harmonically trapped two-component BEC subject to microwave induced Rabi oscillations between two pseudospin components. While the single particle dynamics can be explained by mapping the system to a two-component Bose-Hubbard model, nonlinearities due to the interatomic repulsion lead to new effects observed in the experiments: In the presence of a linear magnetic field gradient, a qualitatively stable moving magnetic order that is similar to antiferromagnetic order is observed after critical winding is achieved. We also demonstrate how the phase winding can be used as a new tool to generate copious dark-bright solitons in a two-component BEC, opening the door for new experimental studies of these nonlinear features.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phases in Two-dimensional Spin-Orbit Coupled Degenerate Fermi Gases

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with non-zero total momentum Cooper pairs in a strong magnetic field, was predicted more than 50 years ago and now becomes an important concept in many branches of physics. However, no unambiguous experimental evidences for the existence of FFLO phases have been observed yet. Recently, spin-imbalanced ultracold degenerate Fermi gases have emerged as a new powerful platform for the observation of FFLO phases due to their high experimental controllability and the lack of disorder. However, in three dimensional degenerate Fermi gases where the FFLO phases can be described within the simple mean field theory, the parameter region for the FFLO phases is too small to be observed in experiments. Recently, we showed that the Rashba type spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field in three dimensional degenerate Fermi gases provide a more efficient way to create the FFLO phase because (1) the parameter region for the FFLO phase is greatly enlarged in the phase diagram and (2) the FFLO phase is stabilized due to the enhanced energy difference between FFLO phase and conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) phase. In this work we investigate the FFLO phase in two dimensional spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gases using the mean field theory, with special concerns on the physical origin of the FFLO state. The basic properties of the FFLO phase are discussed and the phase diagram is obtained at zero temperature. The symmetry of different quantum phases is examined, which provide important basis for the experimental observation of FFLO phases using the time-of-flight imaging.

Topological Uniform Superfluid and FFLO Phases in 3D to 1D crossover of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases

We consider the quasi-one dimensional system realized by an array of weakly coupled parallel one-dimensional "tubes" in a two-dimensional lattice which permits free motion of atoms in an axial direction in the presence of a Zeeman field, Rashba type spin orbit coupling (SOC), and an s-wave attractive interaction, while the radial motion is tightly confined. We solve the zero-temperature (T=0) Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations for the quasi-1D Fermi gas with the dispersion modified by tunneling between the tubes, and show that the T=0 phase diagram hosts the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase with non-zero center of mass momentum Cooper pairs for small values of the SOC while for larger values of the SOC and high Zeeman fields the uniform superfluid phase with zero center of mass momentum Cooper pairs has an instability towards the topological uniform superfluid phase with Majorana fermions at the tube ends. Also, we show that tuning the two-dimensional optical lattice strength in this model allows one to explore the crossover behaviors of the phases during the transition between the 3D and the 1D system and in general the FFLO (for small SOC) and the topological uniform superfluid phase (for large SOC) are favored as the system becomes more one-dimensional. We also find evidence of the existence of a Zeeman tuned topological quantum phase transition (TQPT) within the FFLO phase itself and for large values of the Zeeman field and small SOC the TQPT gives rise to a topologically distinct FFLO phase.

Observation of Zitterbewegung in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Spin-orbit coupled ultra-cold atoms provide an intriguing new avenue for the study of rich spin dynamics in superfluids. In this Letter, we observe Zitterbewegung, the simultaneous velocity (thus position) and spin oscillations, of neutral atoms between two spin-orbit coupled bands in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) through sudden quantum quenches of the Hamiltonian. The observed Zitterbewegung oscillations are perfect on a short time scale but gradually damp out on a long time scale, followed by sudden and strong heating of the BEC. As an application, we also demonstrate how Zitterbewegung oscillations can be exploited to populate the upper spin-orbit band, and observe a subsequent dipole motion. Our experimental results are corroborated by a theoretical and numerical analysis and showcase the great flexibility that ultra-cold atoms provide for investigating rich spin dynamics in superfluids.

Majorana Fermions on Zigzag Edge of Monolayer Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Majorana fermions, quantum particles with non-Abelian exchange statistics, are not only of fundamental importance, but also building blocks for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Although certain experimental breakthroughs for observing Majorana fermions have been made recently, their conclusive dection is still challenging due to the lack of proper material properties of the underlined experimental systems. Here we propose a new platform for Majorana fermions based on edge states of certain non-topological two-dimensional semiconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling, such as monolayer group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD). Using first-principles calculations and tight-binding modeling, we show that zigzag edges of monolayer TMD can host well isolated single edge band with strong spin-orbit coupling energy. Combining with proximity induced s-wave superconductivity and in-plane magnetic fields, the zigzag edge supports robust topological Majorana bound states at the edge ends, although the two-dimensional bulk itself is non-topological. Our findings points to a controllable and integrable platform for searching and manipulating Majorana fermions.

Topological Superfluids with Finite Momentum Pairing and Majorana Fermions

Majorana fermions, quantum particles that are their own anti-particles, are not only of fundamental importance in elementary particle physics and dark matter, but also building blocks for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Recently Majorana fermions have been intensively studied in solid state and cold atomic systems. These studies are generally based on superconducting pairing between two Fermions with opposite momenta (\textit{% i.e.}, zero total momentum). On the other hand, finite total momentum Cooper pairings, known as Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, were predicted 50 years ago and then widely studied in many branches of physics. However, whether FFLO superconductors can also support Majorana fermions has not been explored. Here we show that Majorana fermions can exist in certain types of gapped FFLO states, yielding a new topological quantum matter: topological FFLO superfluids/superconductors. We demonstrate the existence of such topological FFLO superfluids and the associated Majorana fermions using spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gases and derive their physical parameter regions. The potential implementation of topological FFLO superconductors in semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures are also discussed.

FFLO or Majorana superfluids: The fate of fermionic cold atoms in spin-orbit coupled optical lattices

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultra-cold atoms opens a completely new avenue for exploring new quantum matter. In experiments, the SOC is implemented simultaneously with a Zeeman field. Such spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases are predicted to support Majorana fermions with non-Abelian exchange statistics in one dimension (1D). However, as shown in recent theory and experiments for 1D spin-imbalanced Fermi gases, the Zeeman field can lead to the long-sought Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) superfluids with non-zero momentum Cooper pairings, in contrast to the zero momentum pairing in Majorana superfluids. Therefore a natural question to ask is which phase, FFLO or Majorana superfluids, will survive in spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the presence of a large Zeeman field. In this paper, we address this question by studying the mean field quantum phases of 1D (quasi-1D) spin-orbit coupled fermionic cold atom optical lattices.

Statistical Properties of Exciton Fine Structure Splittings and Polarization Angles in Quantum Dot Ensembles

We propose an effective model to describe the statistical properties of exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) and polarization angle of quantum dot ensembles (QDEs). We derive the distributions of FSS and polarization angle for QDEs and show that their statistical features can be fully characterized using at most three independent measurable parameters. The effective model is confirmed using atomistic pseudopotential calculations as well as experimental measurements for several rather different QDEs. The model naturally addresses three fundamental questions that are frequently encountered in theories and experiments: (I) Why the probability of finding QDs with vanishing FSS is generally very small? (II) Why FSS and polarization angle differ dramatically from QD to QD? and (III) Is there any direct connection between FSS, optical polarization and the morphology of QDs? The answers to these fundamental questions yield a completely new physical picture for understanding optical properties of QDEs.

Route to Observable Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Phases in 3D Spin-Orbit Coupled Degenerate Fermi Gases

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase was first predicted in 2D superconductors about 50 years ago, but so far unambiguous experimental evidences are still lacked. The recently experimentally realized spin-imbalanced Fermi gases may potentially unveil this elusive state, but require very stringent experimental conditions. In this Letter, we show that FFLO phases may be observed even in a 3D degenerate Fermi gas with spin-orbit coupling and in-plane Zeeman field. The FFLO phase is driven by the interplay between asymmetry of Fermi surface and superfluid order, instead of the interplay between magnetic and superconducting order in solid materials. The predicted FFLO phase exists in a giant parameter region, possesses a stable long-range superfluid order due to the 3D geometry, and can be observed with experimentally already achieved temperature ($T\sim 0.05E_{F}$), thus opens a new fascinating avenue for exploring FFLO physics.

Thermodynamic signatures for topological phase transitions to Majorana and Weyl superfluids in ultracold Fermi gases

We discuss the thermodynamic signatures for the topological phase transitions into Majorana and Weyl superfluid phases in ultracold Fermi gases in two and three dimensions in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman field. We analyze the thermodynamic properties exhibiting the distinct nature of the topological phase transitions linked with the Majorana fermions (2D Fermi gas) and Weyl fermions (3D Fermi gas) which can be observed experimentally, including pressure, chemical potential, isothermal compressibility, entropy, and specific heat, as a function of the interaction and the Zeeman field at both zero and finite temperatures. We conclude that among the various thermodynamic quantities, the isothermal compressibility and the chemical potential as a function of the artificial Zeeman field have the strongest signatures of the topological transitions in both two and three dimensions.
