Many-body Landau-Zener Transition in Cold Atom Double Well Optical Lattices

Ultra-cold atoms in optical lattices provide an ideal platform for exploring many-body physics of a large system arising from the coupling among a series of small identical systems whose few-body dynamics is exactly solvable. Using Landau-Zener (LZ) transition of bosonic atoms in double well optical lattices as an experimentally realizable model, we investigate such few to many body route by exploring the relation and difference between the small few-body (in one double well) and the large many-body (in double well lattice) non-equilibrium dynamics of cold atoms in optical lattices. We find the many-body coupling between double wells greatly enhances the LZ transition probability. The many-body dynamics in the double well lattice shares both similarity and difference from the few-body dynamics in one and two double wells. The sign of the on-site interaction plays a significant role on the many-body LZ transition. Various experimental signatures of the many-body LZ transition, including atom density, momentum distribution, and density-density correlation, are obtained.

Bose-Einstein Condensates in Spin-Orbit Coupled Optical Lattices: Flat Bands and Superfluidity

Recently spin-orbit (SO) coupled superfluids in free space or harmonic traps have been extensively studied, motivated by the recent experimental realization of SO coupling for Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). However, the rich physics of SO coupled BEC in optical lattices has been largely unexplored. In this paper, we show that in suitable parameter region the lowest Bloch state forms an isolated flat band in a one dimensional (1D) SO coupled optical lattice, which thus provides an experimentally feasible platform for exploring the recently celebrated topological flat band physics in lattice systems. We show that the flat band is preserved even with the mean field interaction in BEC. We investigate the superfluidity of the BEC in SO coupled lattices through dynamical and Landau stability analysis, and show that the BEC is stable on the whole flat band.

Majorana Fermions Under Uniaxial Stress in Semiconductor-Superconductor Heterostructures

Spin-orbit coupled semiconductor nanowires with Zeeman splitting in proximity contact with bulk $s$-wave superconductivity have recently been proposed as a promising platform for realizing Majorana fermions. However, in this setup the chemical potential of the nanowire is generally pinned by the Fermi surface of the superconductor. This makes the tuning of the chemical potential by external electrical gates, a crucial requirement for unambiguous detection of Majorana fermions, very challenging in experiments. Here we show that tunable topological superconducting regime supporting Majorana fermions can be realized in semiconductor nanowires using uniaxial stress. For n-type nanowires the uniaxial stress tunes the effective chemical potential, while for p-type systems the effective pairing may also be modified by stress, thus significantly enhancing the topological minigap. We show that the required stress, of the order of 0.1%, is within current experimental reach using conventional piezo crystals.

Searching for Majorana Fermions in 2D Spin-orbit Coupled Fermi Superfluids at Finite Temperature

Recent experimental breakthrough in realizing spin-orbit (SO) coupling for cold atoms has spurred considerable interest in the physics of 2D SO coupled Fermi superfluids, especially topological Majorana fermions (MFs) which were predicted to exist at zero temperature. However, it is well known that long-range superfluid order is destroyed in 2D by the phase fluctuation at finite temperature and the relevant physics is the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. In this Letter, we examine finite temperature effects on SO coupled Fermi gases and show that finite temperature is indeed necessary for the observation of MFs. MFs are topologically protected by a quasiparticle energy gap which is found to be much larger than the temperature. The restrictions to the parameter region for the observation of MFs have been obtained.

Exotic superfluidity in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the superfluidity of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) by computing its Bogoliubov excitations, which are found to consist of two branches: one is gapless and phonon-like at long wavelength; the other is typically gapped. These excitations imply a superfluidity that has two new features: ({\it i}) due to the absence of the Galilean invariance, one can no longer define the critical velocity of superfluidity independent of the reference frame; ({\it ii}) the superfluidity depends not only on whether the speed of the BEC exceeds a critical value, but also on {\it cross helicity} that is defined as the direction of the cross product of the spin and the kinetic momentum of the BEC.

Probing a topological quantum critical point in semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures

Quantum ground states on the non-trivial side of a topological quantum critical point (TQCP) have unique properties that make them attractive candidates for quantum information applications. A recent example is provided by s-wave superconductivity on a semiconductor platform, which is tuned through a TQCP to a topological superconducting (TS) state by an external Zeeman field. Despite many attractive features of TS states, TQCPs themselves do not break any symmetries, making it impossible to distinguish the TS state from a regular superconductor in conventional bulk measurements. Here we show that for the semiconductor TQCP this problem can be overcome by tracking suitable bulk transport properties across the topological quantum critical regime itself. The universal low-energy effective theory and the scaling form of the relevant susceptibilities also provide a useful theoretical framework in which to understand the topological transitions in semiconductor heterostructures. Based on our theory, specific bulk measurements are proposed here in order to characterize the novel TQCP in semiconductor heterostructures.

Topological thermoelectric effects in spin-orbit coupled electron and hole doped semiconductors

We compute the intrinsic contributions to the Berry-phase mediated anomalous Hall and Nernst effects in electron- and hole-doped semiconductors in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field as well as Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit couplings. For both systems we find that the regime of chemical potential which supports the topological superconducting state in the presence of superconducting proximity effect can be characterized by plateaus in the topological Hall and Nernst coefficients flanked by well-defined peaks marking the emergence of the topological regime. The plateaus arise from a clear momentum space separation between the region where the Berry curvature is peaked (at the `near-band-degeneracy' points) and the region where the single (or odd number of) Fermi surface lies in the Brillouin zone. The plateau for the Nernst coefficient is at vanishing magnitudes surrounded by two peaks of opposite signs as a function of the chemical potential. These results could be useful for experimentally deducing the chemical potential regime suitable for realizing topological states in the presence of proximity effect.

Hole-doped semiconductor nanowire on top of an s-wave superconductor: A new and experimentally accessible system for Majorana fermions

Majorana fermions were envisioned by E. Majorana in 1935 to describe neutrinos. Recently it has been shown that they can be realized even in a class of electron-doped semiconductors, on which ordinary s-wave superconductivity is proximity induced, provided the time reversal symmetry is broken by an external Zeeman field above a threshold. Here we show that in a hole-doped semiconductor nanowire the threshold Zeeman field for Majorana fermions can be very small for some magic values of the hole density. In contrast to the electron-doped systems, smaller Zeeman fields and much stronger spin-orbit coupling and effective mass of holes allow the hole-doped systems to support Majorana fermions in a parameter regime which is routinely realized in current experiments.

Finite temperature Dicke phase transition of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical cavity

Dicke model predicts a quantum phase transition from normal to superradiant phases for a two-level atomic ensemble coupled with an optical cavity at zero temperature. In a recent pioneer experiment [Nature 464, 1301 (2010)], such a phase transition has been observed using a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in an optical cavity. Compared with the original Dicke model, the experimental system features finite temperature and strong atom-photon nonlinear interaction in BEC. In this Letter, we develop a finite temperature theory for the Dicke phase transition of a BEC in an optical cavity, taking into account the atom-photon nonlinear interaction. In addition to explaining the experimentally observed transition from normal to superradiant phases at finite-temperature, we point it out that a new phase, the coexistence of normal and superradient phases, was also observed in the experiment. We show rich finite temperature phase diagrams existing in the experimental system by tuning various experimental parameters. We find that the specific heat of the BEC can serve as a powerful tool for probing various phases.

Signature of Majorana Fermions in Charge Transport in Semiconductor Nanowires

We investigate the charge transport in a semiconductor nanowire that is subject to a perpendicular magnetic field and in partial contact with an \textit{s}-wave superconductor. We find that Majorana fermions, existing at the interface between superconducting and normal sections of the nanowire within certain parameter region, can induce resonant Andreev reflection of electrons at the interface, which yields a zero energy peak in the electrical conductance of the nanowire. The width of the zero energy conductance peak for different experimental parameters is characterized. While the zero energy peak provides a signature for Majorana fermions in one dimensional nanowires, it disappears in a two-dimensional semiconductor thin film with the same experimental setup because of the existence of other edge states in two dimensions. The proposed charge transport experiment may provide a simple and experimentally feasible method for the detection of Majorana fermions in semiconductor nanowires.

Quantum-Enhanced Tunable Second-Order Optical Nonlinearity in Bilayer Graphene

Second order optical nonlinear processes involve the coherent mixing of two electromagnetic waves to generate a new optical frequency, which plays a central role in a variety of applications, such as ultrafast laser systems, rectifiers, modulators, and optical imaging. However, progress is limited in the mid-infrared (MIR) region due to the lack of suitable nonlinear materials. It is desirable to develop a robust system with a strong, electrically tunable second order optical nonlinearity. Here we demonstrate theoretically that AB-stacked bilayer graphene (BLG) can exhibit a giant and tunable second order nonlinear susceptibility χ^(2) once an in-plane electric field is applied. χ^(2) can be electrically tuned from 0 to ~ {10^5 pm/V}, three orders of magnitude larger than the widely used nonlinear crystal AgGaSe2. We show that the unusually large χ^(2) arises from two different quantum enhanced two-photon processes thanks to the unique electronic spectrum of BLG. The tunable electronic bandgap of BLG adds additional tunability on the resonance of χ^(2), which corresponds to a tunable wavelength ranging from ~2.6 μm to ~3.1 μm for the up-converted photon. Combined with the high electron mobility and optical transparency of the atomically thin BLG, our scheme suggests a new regime of nonlinear photonics based on BLG.

BCS-BEC crossover in spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional Fermi gases

The recent experimental realization of spin-orbit coupling for ultra-cold atoms has generated much interest in the physics of spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gases. Although recently the BCS-BEC crossover in three-dimensional (3D) spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases has been intensively studied, the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) crossover physics has remained unexplored. In this paper, we investigate, both numerically and analytically, the BCS-BEC crossover physics in 2D degenerate Fermi gases in the presence of a Rashba type of spin-orbit coupling. We derive the mean field gap and atom number equations suitable for the 2D spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases and solve them numerically and self-consistently, from which the dependence of the ground state properties (chemical potential, superfluid pairing gap, ground state energy per atom) on the system parameters (e.g., binding energy, spin-orbit coupling strength) is obtained. Furthermore, we derive analytic expressions for these ground state quantities, which agree well with our numerical results within a broad parameter region. Such analytic expressions also agree qualitatively with previous numerical results for the 3D spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases, where analytic results are lacked. We show that with an increasing SOC strength, the chemical potential is shifted by a constant determined by the SOC strength. The superfluid pairing gap is enhanced significantly in the BCS limit for strong SOC, but only increases slightly in the BEC limit.

Tunable Spin-orbit Coupling and Quantum Phase Transition in a Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensate

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the intrinsic interaction between a particle spin and its motion, is responsible for various important phenomena, ranging from atomic fine structure to topological condensed matter physics. The recent experimental breakthrough on the realization of SOC for ultra-cold atoms provides a completely new platform for exploring spin-orbit coupled superfluid physics. However, the SOC strength in the experiment, determined by the applied laser wavelengths, is not tunable. In this Letter, we propose a scheme for tuning the SOC strength through a fast and coherent modulation of the laser intensities. We show that the many-body interaction between atoms, together with the tunable SOC, can drive a \textit{quantum phase transition} (QPT) from spin-balanced to spin-polarized ground states in a harmonic trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). This transition realizes the long-sought QPT in the quantum Dicke model, and may have important applications in quantum optics and quantum information. We characterize the QPT using the periods of collective oscillations (center of mass motion and scissors mode) of the BEC, which show pronounced peaks and damping around the quantum critical point.

Mean-field Dynamics of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the interaction between the spin and momentum of a quantum particle, is crucial for many important condensed matter phenomena. The recent experimental realization of SOC in neutral bosonic cold atoms provides a new and ideal platform for investigating spin-orbit coupled quantum many-body physics. In this Letter, we derive a generic Gross-Pitaevskii equation as the starting point for the study of many-body dynamics in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that different laser setups for realizing the same SOC may lead to different mean field dynamics. Various ground state phases (stripe, phase separation, etc.) of the condensate are found in different parameter regions. A new oscillation period induced by the SOC, similar to the Zitterbewegung oscillation, is found in the center of mass motion of the condensate.

BCS-BEC Crossover and Topological Phase Transition in 3D Spin-Orbit Coupled Degenerate Fermi Gases

We investigate the BCS-BEC crossover in three dimensional degenerate Fermi gases in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. We show that the superfluid order parameter destroyed by a large Zeeman field can be restored by the SOC. With increasing strengths of the Zeeman field, there is a series of topological quantum phase transitions from a non-topological superfluid state with fully gapped fermionic spectrum to a topological superfluid state with four topologically protected Fermi points (i.e., nodes in the quasiparticle excitation gap) and then to a second topological superfluid state with only two topologically protected Fermi points. The quasiparticle excitations near the Fermi points realize the long-sought low-temperature analog of Weyl fermions of particle physics. We show that the topological phase transitions can be probed using the experimentally realized momentum resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Quantized Anomalous Hall Insulator in a Nanopatterned Two-Dimensional Electron Gas

We propose that a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) can be realized in a nanopatterned two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with a small in-plane magnetic field and a high carrier density. The Berry curvatures originating from the in-plane magnetic field and Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling, in combination with a nanoscale honeycomb lattice potential modulation, lead to topologically nontrivial insulating states in the 2DEG without Landau levels. In the bulk insulating gaps, the anomalous Hall conductivity is quantized $-e^{2}/h$, corresponding to a finite Chern number -1. There exists one gapless chiral edge state on each edge of a finite size 2DEG.

Quantum Transport of Bosonic Cold Atoms in Double Well Optical Lattices

We numerically investigate, using the time evolving block decimation algorithm, the quantum transport of ultra-cold bosonic atoms in a double well optical lattice through slow and periodic modulation of the lattice parameters (intra- and inter-well tunneling, chemical potential, etc.). The transport of atoms does not depend on the rate of change of the parameters (as along as the change is slow) and can distribute atoms in optical lattices at the quantized level without involving external forces. The transport of atoms depends on the atom filling in each double well and the interaction between atoms. In the strongly interacting region, the bosonic atoms share the same transport properties as non-interacting fermions with quantized transport at the half filling and no atom transport at the integer filling. In the weakly interacting region, the number of the transported atoms is proportional to the atom filling. We show the signature of the quantum transport from the momentum distribution of atoms that can measured in the time of flight image. A semiclassical transport model is developed to explain the numerically observed transport of bosonic atoms in the non-interacting and strongly interacting limits. The scheme may serve as an quantized battery for atomtronics applications.

Superconducting phase with a chiral $f$-wave pairing symmetry and Majorana fermions induced in a hole-doped semiconductor

We show that a chiral $f+if$-wave superconducting pairing may be induced in the lowest heavy hole band of a hole-doped semiconductor thin film through proximity contact with an \textit{s}-wave superconductor. The chirality of the pairing originates from the $3π$ Berry phase accumulated for a heavy hole moving along a close path on the Fermi surface. There exist three chiral gapless Majorana edge states, in consistence with the chiral $f+if$% -wave pairing. We show the existence of zero energy Majorana fermions in vortices in the semiconductor-superconductor heterostructure by solving the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes equations numerically as well as analytically in the strong confinement limit.
