Quantum anomalous Hall states in the $p$-orbital honeycomb optical lattices

We study the quantum anomalous Hall states in the $p$-orbital bands of the honeycomb optical lattices loaded with the single component fermions. Such an effect has not been realized in both condensed matter and cold atom systems yet. By applying the available experimental technique developed by Gemelke \textit{et al.} to rotate each lattice site around its own center, the band structures become topologically non-trivial. At a certain rotation angular velocity $Ω$, a flat band structure appears with localized eigenstates carrying chiral current moments. With imposing the soft confining potential, the density profile exhibits a wedding-cake shaped distribution with insulating plateaus at commensurate fillings. Moreover, the inhomogeneous confining potential induces dissipationless circulation currents whose magnitudes and chiralities vary with the distance from the trap center. In the insulating regions the Hall conductances are quantized, and in the metallic regions the directions and magnitudes of chiral currents cannot be described by the usual local-density-approximation. The quantum anomalous Hall effects are robust at temperature scales small compared to band gaps, which increases the feasibility of experimental realizations.

Robustness of Majorana Modes and Minigaps in a Spin-Orbit-Coupled Semiconductor-Superconductor Heterostructure

We study the robustness of Majorana zero energy modes and minigaps of quasiparticle excitations in a vortex by numerically solving Bogoliubov-deGennes equations in a heterostructure composed of an \textit{s} -wave superconductor, a spin-orbit-coupled semiconductor thin film, and a magnetic insulator. This heterostructure was proposed recently as a platform for observing non-Abelian statistics and performing topological quantum computation. The dependence of the Majorana zero energy states and the minigaps on various physics parameters (Zeeman field, chemical potential, spin-orbit coupling strength) is characterized. We find the minigaps depend strongly on the spin-orbit coupling strength. In certain parameter region, the minigaps are linearly proportional to the \textit{s}-wave superconducting pairing gap $Δ_{s}$, which is very different from the $Δ_{s}^{2}$ dependence in a regular \textit{s-} or \textit{\p}-wave superconductor. We characterize the zero energy chiral edge state at the boundary and calculate the STM signal in the vortex core that shows a pronounced zero energy peak. We show that the Majorana zero energy states are robust in the presence of various types of impurities. We find the existence of impurity potential may increase the minigaps and thus benefit topological quantum computation.

Spin-orbit coupling and perpendicular Zeeman field for fermionic cold atoms: observation of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect

We propose a scheme for generating Rashba spin-orbit coupling and perpendicular Zeeman field simultaneously for cold fermionic atoms in a harmonic trap through the coupling between atoms and laser fields. The realization of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and perpendicular Zeeman field provides opportunities for exploring many topological phenomena using cold fermionic atoms. We focus on the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and show that it may be observed through the response of atomic density to a rotation of the harmonic trap.

Geometric optics of Bloch waves in a chiral and dissipative medium

We present a geometric optics theory for the transport of quantum particles (or classical waves) in a chiral and dissipative periodic crystal subject to slowly varying perturbations in space and time. Taking account of some properties of particles and media neglected in previous theory, we find important additional terms in the equations of motion of particles. The (energy) current density field, which traces the geometric optics rays, is not only governed by the Bloch band energy dispersion but also involves there additional fields. These are the angular momentum of the particle, the dissipation dipole density, and various geometric gauge fields in the extended phase space spanned by space-time and its reciprocal, momentum and frequency. For simplicity, the theory is presented using light propagation in photonic crystals.

Quasiparticle Nernst effect in the cuprate superconductors from the d-density wave theory of the pseudogap phase

We consider the Nernst effect in the underdoped regime of the cuprate high temperature superconductors within the d-density wave (DDW) model of the pseudogap phase. By a combination of analytical and numerical arguments, we show that there is a robust low-temperature positive peak (i.e., maximum) in the temperature dependence of the Nernst coefficient when the DDW state is ambipolar, i.e., when the broken symmetry supports the coexistence of both electron- and hole-like quasiparticles in the excitation spectrum, and the electron pocket dominates at the low temperatures. In contrast, the Nernst coefficient is negative and there is no such positive peak if the underlying state is non-ambipolar, i.e., when it supports only one type of quasiparticles. More generally, in the ambipolar state, the sign of the Nernst coefficient can be positive or negative depending on the dominance of the electron or hole pockets, respectively, in the low temperature thermoelectric transport. By modeling the pseudogap phase by a doping-dependent DDW order parameter with a Fermi surface topology that supports both hole and electron pockets, and assuming energy-independent transport scattering times, we analyze the evolution of the Nernst effect with doping concentration at low temperatures in the cuprate phase diagram.

Effects of quasiparticle ambipolarity on the Nernst effect in underdoped cuprate superconductors

We consider the Nernst effect in the normal state of the underdoped cuprate superconductors, where recent quantum oscillation experiments have indicated the existence of Fermi surface pockets and quasiparticle ambipolarity in the excitation spectrum. Using an ambipolar d-density wave model for the pseudogap, we predict a peak in the Nernst coefficient with decreasing temperature below the pseudogap temperature. The existence of the peak and its sign, which we predict to be the same as that due to mobile vortices in a superconductor, result from the dominance of the electron pocket at low temperatures, as has been observed in recent Hall experiments.

Suppression of Phase Decoherence in a Single Atomic Qubit

We study the suppression of noise-induced phase decoherence in a single atomic qubit by employing pulse sequences. The atomic qubit is composed of a single neutral atom in a far-detuned optical dipole trap and the phase decoherence may originate from the laser intensity and beam pointing fluctuations as well as magnetic field fluctuations. We show that suitable pulse sequences may prolongate the qubit coherence time substantially as comparing to the conventional spin echo pulse.

Ultra-high fidelity qubits for quantum computing

We analyze a system of fermionic $^{6}$Li atoms in an optical trap, and show that an atom "on demand" can be prepared with ultra-high fidelity, exceeding 0.99998. This process can be scaled to many sites in parallel, providing a realistic method to initialize N qubits at ultra-high fidelity for quantum computing. We also show how efficient quantum gate operation can be implemented in this system, and how spatially resolved single-atom detection can be performed.

Berry phase mediated topological thermoelectric transport in gapped single and bilayer graphene

We consider the anomalous thermoelectric transport in gapped single and bilayer graphene where the gap may be due to broken inversion symmetry. In the presence of the gap, non-trivial Berry phase effects can be shown to mediate a transverse thermoelectric voltage in response to an applied temperature gradient even in the absence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This spontaneous, anomalous Nernst effect is nonzero for non-uniform chemical potential in the two inequivalent valleys in the graphene band structure. Conversely, the Nernst response can be used to create a valley-index polarization between the two transverse sample edges as in the analogous valley Hall effect.

Anomalous Nernst effect from a chiral d-density wave state in underdoped cuprate superconductors

We show that the breakdown of time-reversal invariance, confirmed by the recent polar Kerr effect measurements in the cuprates, implies the existence of an anomalous Nernst effect in the pseudogap phase of underdoped cuprate superconductors. Modeling the time-reversal-breaking ordered state by the chiral d-density-wave state, we find that the magnitude of the Nernst effect can be sizable even at temperatures much higher than the superconducting transition temperature. These results imply that the experimentally found Nernst effect at the pseudogap temperatures may be due to the chiral d-density wave ordered state with broken time-reversal invariance.

$p_{x}+ip_{y}$ superfluid from s-wave interactions of fermionic cold atoms

Two-dimensional ($p_{x}+ip_{y}$) superfluids/superconductors offer a playground for studying intriguing physics such as quantum teleportation, non-Abelian statistics, and topological quantum computation. Creating such a superfluid in cold fermionic atom optical traps using p-wave Feshbach resonance is turning out to be challenging. Here we propose a method to create a $p_{x}+ip_{y}$ superfluid directly from an s-wave interaction making use of a topological Berry phase, which can be artificially generated. We discuss ways to detect the spontaneous Hall mass current, which acts as a diagnostic for the chiral p-wave superfluid.

Realizing the strongly correlated $d$-Mott state in a fermionic cold atom optical lattice

We show that a new state of matter, the d-wave Mott-insulator state (d-Mott state) (introduced recently by [H. Yao, W. F. Tsai, and S. A. Kivelson, Phys. Rev. B 76, 161104 (2007)]), which is characterized by a non-zero expectation value of a local plaquette operator embedded in an insulating state, can be engineered using ultra-cold atomic fermions in two-dimensional double-well optical lattices. We characterize and analyze the parameter regime where the $d$-Mott state is stable. We predict the testable signatures of the state in the time-of-flight measurements.

Goldstone modes and electromagnon fluctuations in the conical cycloid state of a multiferroic

Using a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory for the magnetic conical cycloid state of a multiferroic, which has been recently reported in the cubic spinel CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$, we discuss its low-energy fluctuation spectrum. We identify the Goldstone modes of the conical cycloidal order, and deduce their dispersion relations whose signature anisotropy in momentum space reflects the symmetries broken by the ordered state. We discuss the soft polarization fluctuations, the `electromagnons', associated with these magnetic modes and make several experimental predictions which can be tested in neutron scattering and optical experiments.

Ginzburg-Landau theory for the conical cycloid state in multiferroics: applications to CoCr$_2$O$_4$

We show that the cycloidal magnetic order of a multiferroic can arise in the absence of spin and lattice anisotropies, for e.g., in a cubic material, and this explains the occurrence of such a state in CoCr$_2$O$_4$. We discuss the case when this order coexists with ferromagnetism in a so called `conical cycloid' state, and show that a direct transition to this state from the ferromagnet is necessarily first order. On quite general grounds, the reversal of the direction of the uniform magnetization in this state can lead to the reversal of the electric polarization as well, without the need to invoke `toroidal moment' as the order parameter.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking by a $(d+id)$ density-wave state in underdoped cuprate superconductors

It was proposed that the $id_{x^2-y^2}$ density-wave state (DDW) may be responsible for the pseudogap behavior in the underdoped cuprates. Here we show that the admixture of a small $d_{xy}$ component to the DDW state breaks the symmetry between the counter-propagating orbital currents of the DDW state and, thus, violates the macroscopic time-reversal symmetry. This symmetry breaking results in a non-zero polar Kerr effect, which has recently been observed in the pseudogap phase.

Non-equilibrium spin dynamics in a trapped Fermi gas with effective spin-orbit interaction

We consider a trapped atomic system in the presence of spatially varying laser fields. The laser-atom interaction generates a pseudospin degree of freedom (referred to simply as spin) and leads to an effective spin-orbit coupling for the fermions in the trap. Reflections of the fermions from the trap boundaries provide a physical mechanism for effective momentum relaxation and non-trivial spin dynamics due to the emergent spin-orbit coupling. We explicitly consider evolution of an initially spin-polarized Fermi gas in a two-dimensional harmonic trap and derive non-equilibrium behavior of the spin polarization. It shows periodic echoes with a frequency equal to the harmonic trapping frequency. Perturbations, such as an asymmetry of the trap, lead to the suppression of the spin echo amplitudes. We discuss a possible experimental setup to observe spin dynamics and provide numerical estimates of relevant parameters.

Testable signatures of quantum non-locality in a two-dimensional chiral p-wave superconductor

A class of topological excitations -- the odd-winding-number vortices -- in a spinless 2D chiral p-wave $(p_x+ip_y)$ superconductor trap Majorana fermion states in the vortex cores. For a dilute gas of such vortices, the lowest energy \textit{fermionic} eigenstates are intrinsically non-local. We predict two testable signatures of this unusual quantum non-locality in quasiparticle tunneling experiments. We discuss why the associated teleportation-like phenomenon does not imply the violation of causality.
