Investigating the parity of the exotic Theta^+ baryon from the kaon photoproduction

Based on the hadronic model with the gauge prescription suggested by Ohta and Haberzettl, we investigate the possibility of determining the parity state of the $Θ^+$ baryon using photon induced processes, $γn\to K^- Θ^+$ and $γp\to \bar{K}^0 Θ^+$. The total and differential cross sections are simulated in two versions of pseudovector(PV) and pseudoscalar(PS) coupling schemes and the results are reported both on the positive and negative parity states of the $Θ^+$ baryon. It is found that in both coupling schemes the total cross sections from the neutron target are in general larger than those from the proton target, regardless of the $Θ^+$ parities. The cross sections of the $Θ^+$ production however depend largely on the value of the $Θ^+$ decay width which is not yet well established. Moreover, there is a wide theoretical uncertainty associated with the different assumption on the gauge prescription in model calculations. We discuss these points by comparing theoretical predictions with the existing experimental data. Our analysis suggests that the observation of the angular distribution rather than just the total cross section in the photoproduction process may be a useful tool to distinguish the parity of the $Θ^+$ baryon.

Phenomenology of flavor oscillations with non-perturbative effects from quantum field theory

We analyze phenomenological aspects of the quantum field theoretical formulation of meson mixing and obtain the exact oscillation formula in the presence of the decay. This formula is different from quantum mechanical formula by additional high-frequency oscillation terms. In the infinite volume limit, the space of the flavor quantum states is unitarily inequivalent to the space of energy eigenstates.

Distribution of mass in galaxy cluster CL0024 and the particle mass of dark matter

We study in details the distribution of mass in galaxy cluster CL0024+1654 inferred using the method of strong gravitational lensing by Tyson {\it et al.} (1998). We show that a linear correlation exists between total, visible and dark matter distributions on log-log scale with consistent coefficients. The shape and parameters of log-log-linear correlation are not affected significantly whether one uses projected or volume mass densities but is consistent with $κ=2-5$ visible/dark ratio. We also show and analyze in depth so called alignment properties of the above-mentioned profiles. We show that log-log-linear correlation and alignments can all be understood in terms of thermodynamic/hydrodynamic equilibrium with gravitational potential growing almost linearly in the region of interest. We then analyze the hypothesis of thermal equilibrium on the base of the existing data about CL0024 cluster. If the presence of log-log-linear correlation and alignments were interpreted thermodynamically, this would indicate the mass of the dark matter particle 2-5 times smaller than that of atomic hydrogen, thus giving range for the mass of dark matter particle between 200MeV and 1000MeV.

Time-to-space conversion in quantum field theory of flavor mixing

We consider the problem of time-to-space conversion in quantum field theory of flavor mixing using a generalization of the wave-packet method in quantum mechanics. We work entirely within the canonical formalism of creation and annihilation operators that allows us, unlike the usual wave-packet formulation, to include the nontrivial effect due to flavor condensation in the vacuum.

Electromagnetic Structure of the $ρ$ Meson in the Light-Front Quark Model

We investigate the elastic form factors of the rho meson in the light-front quark model(LFQM). With the phenomenologically accessible meson vertices including the one obtained by the Melosh transformation frequently used in the LFQM, we find that only the helicity $0\to 0$ matrix element of the plus current receives the zero-mode contribution. We quantify the zero-mode contribution in the helicity $0\to 0$ amplitude using the angular condition of spin-1 system. After taking care of the zero-mode issue, we obtain the magnetic($μ$) and quadrupole($Q$) moments of the rho meson as $μ=1.92$ and $Q=0.43$, respectively, in the LFQM consistent with the Melosh transformation and compare our results with other available theoretical predictions.

Molar mass estimate of dark matter from the dark mass distribution measurements

We study the distribution of dark matter versus visible matter using a set of data obtained from strong gravitational lensing in the galaxy cluster CL0024+1654 and another set of data inferred from the universal rotation curves in spiral galaxies. The important feature of these two dramatically different observations is that the mass density profile of both visible and dark components can be estimated. From these measurements we deduce the mass of the dark matter particle and our estimate of the mass for the dark matter particle is $μ_d \approx (200-800)$MeV. We contrast our estimates from CL0024+1654 data and the universal rotation curves of the spiral galaxies and discuss their consistency.

The Canonical Transformation and Duality in the 1+1 dimensional $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ theory

We investigate the self-organizing nature of relativistic quantum field theory in terms of canonical transformation and duality presenting simple but explicit examples of $(ϕ^4)_{1+1}$ and $(ϕ^6)_{1+1}$ theories. Our purpose is fulfilled by applying the oscillator representation (OR) method which allows us to convert the original strong interaction theory into a weekly interacting quasiparticle theory that is equivalent to the original theory. We discuss advantages of the OR method and compare the results with what was already obtained by the method of Gaussian effective potential (GEP) and the Hartree approximation (HA). While we confirm that the GEP results are identical to the Hartree results for the ground state energy, we found that the OR method gives the quasiparticle mass different from the GEP and HA results. In our examples, the self-organizing nature is revealed by the vacuum energy density that gets lowered when the quasiparticles are formed. In the $(ϕ^6)_{1+1}$ theory, we found two physically meaningful duality-related quasiparticle solutions which have different symmetry properties under the transition of quasiparticle field $Φ\to -Φ$. However, these two quasiparticle solutions yield the identical effective potential in the strong coupling limit of the original theory.

Radiative Scalar Meson Decays in the Light-Front Quark Model

We construct a relativistic $^3P_0$ wavefunction for scalar mesons within the framework of light-front quark model(LFQM). This scalar wavefunction is used to perform relativistic calculations of absolute widths for the radiative decay processes$(0^{++})\toγγ,(0^{++})\toϕγ$, and $(0^{++})\toργ$ which incorporate the effects of glueball-$q\bar{q}$ mixing. The mixed physical states are assumed to be $f_0(1370),f_0(1500)$,and $f_0(1710)$ for which the flavor-glue content is taken from the mixing calculations of other works. Since experimental data for these processes are poor, our results are compared with those of a recent non-relativistic model calculation. We find that while the relativistic corrections introduced by the LFQM reduce the magnitudes of the decay widths by 50-70%, the relative strengths between different decay processes are fairly well preserved. We also calculate decay widths for the processes $ϕ\to(0^{++})γ$ and $(0^{++})\toγ\gamm$ involving the light scalars $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ to test the simple $q\bar{q}$ model of these mesons. Our results of $q\bar{q}$ model for these processes are not quite consistent with well-established data, further supporting the idea that $f_0(980)$ and $a_0(980)$ are not conventional $q\bar{q}$ states.

Transition Form Factors between Pseudoscalar and Vector Mesons in Light-Front Dynamics

We study the transition form factors between pseudoscalar and vector mesons using a covariant fermion field theory model in $(3+1)$ dimensions. Performing the light-front calculation in the $q^+ =0$ frame in parallel with the manifestly covariant calculation, we note that the suspected nonvanishing zero-mode contribution to the light-front current $J^+$ does not exist in our analysis of transition form factors. We also perform the light-front calculation in a purely longitudinal $q^+ > 0$ frame and confirm that the form factors obtained directly from the timelike region are identical to the ones obtained by the analytic continuation from the spacelike region. Our results for the $B \to D^* l ν_l$ decay process satisfy the constraints on the heavy-to-heavy semileptonic decays imposed by the flavor independence in the heavy quark limit.

Angular Conditions,Relations between Breit and Light-Front Frames, and Subleading Power Corrections

We analyze the current matrix elements in the general collinear (Breit) frames and find the relation between the ordinary (or canonical) helicity amplitudes and the light-front helicity amplitudes. Using the conservation of angular momentum, we derive a general angular condition which should be satisfied by the light-front helicity amplitudes for any spin system. In addition, we obtain the light-front parity and time-reversal relations for the light-front helicity amplitudes. Applying these relations to the spin-1 form factor analysis, we note that the general angular condition relating the five helicity amplitudes is reduced to the usual angular condition relating the four helicity amplitudes due to the light-front time-reversal condition. We make some comments on the consequences of the angular condition for the analysis of the high-$Q^2$ deuteron electromagnetic form factors, and we further apply the general angular condition to the electromagnetic transition between spin-1/2 and spin-3/2 systems and find a relation useful for the analysis of the N-$Δ$ transition form factors. We also discuss the scaling law and the subleading power corrections in the Breit and light-front frames.

Continuity of generalized parton distributions for the pion virtual Compton scattering

We discuss a consistent treatment of the light-front gauge-boson and meson wave functions in the analyses of the generalized parton distributions(GPDs) and the scattering amplitudes in deeply virtual Compton scattering(DVCS) for the pion. The continuity of the GPDs at the crossover, where the longitudinal momentum fraction of the probed quark is same with the skewedness parameter, and the finiteness of the DVCS amplitude are ensured if the same light-front radial wave function as that of the meson bound state wave function is used for the gauge boson bound state arising from the pair-creation(or nonvalence) diagram. The frame-independence of our model calculation is also guaranteed by the constraint from the sum rule between the GPDs and the form factors.

The Vector Meson Form Factor Analysis in Light-Front Dynamics

We study the form factors of vector mesons using a covariant fermion field theory model in $(3+1)$ dimensions. Performing a light-front calculation in the $q^+ =0$ frame in parallel with a manifestly covariant calculation, we note the existence of a nonvanishing zero-mode contribution to the light-front current $J^+$ and find a way of avoiding the zero-mode in the form factor calculations. Upon choosing the light-front gauge ($\ep^+_{h=\pm}=0$) with circular polarization and with spin projection $h=\uparrow\downarrow=\pm$, only the helicity zero to zero matrix element of the plus current receives zero-mode contributions. Therefore, one can obtain the exact light-front solution of the form factors using only the valence contribution if only the helicity components, $(h'h)=(++),(+-)$, and $(+0)$, are used. We also compare our results obtained from the light-front gauge in the light-front helicity basis (i.e. $h=\pm,0$) with those obtained from the non-LF gauge in the instant form linear polarization basis (i.e. $h=x,y,z$) where the zero-mode contributions to the form factors are unavoidable.

The General Theory of Quantum Field Mixing

We present a general theory of mixing for an arbitrary number of fields with integer or half-integer spin. The time dynamics of the interacting fields is solved and the Fock space for interacting fields is explicitly constructed. The unitary inequivalence of the Fock space of base (unmixed) eigenstates and the physical mixed eigenstates is shown by a straightforward algebraic method for any number of flavors in boson or fermion statistics. The oscillation formulas based on the nonperturbative vacuum are derived in a unified general formulation and then applied to both two and three flavor cases. Especially, the mixing of spin-1 (vector) mesons and the CKM mixing phenomena in the Standard Model are discussed emphasizing the nonperturbative vacuum effect in quantum field theory.

Light-front quark model analysis of rare $B\to K\ell^+\ell^-$ decays

Using the light-front quark model, we calculate the transition form factors, decay rates, and longitudinal lepton polarization asymmetries for the exclusive rare $B\to K\ell^+\ell^-(\ell=e,μ,τ$) decays within the standard model. Evaluating the timelike form factors, we use the analytic continuation method in $q^+=0$ frame to obtain the form factors $F_+$ and $F_T$, which are free from zero-mode. The form factor $F_-$ which is not free from zero-mode in $q^+ = 0$ frame and contaminated by the higher(or nonvalence) Fock states in $q^+ \neq 0$ frame is obtained from an effective treatment for handling the nonvalence contribution based on the Bethe-Salpeter formalism. The covariance(i.e. frame-independence) of our model calculation is discussed. We obtain the branching ratios for ${\rm BR}(B\to K\ell^+\ell^-)$ as $4.96\times10^{-7}|V_{ts}/V_{cb}|^2$ for $\ell=e,μ$ and $1.27\times 10^{-7}|V_{ts}/V_{cb}|^2$ for $\ell=τ$.

Light-Front QCD Hamiltonian Dynamics and Constituent Quark Picture in Exclusive Processes

After reviewing a connection between quantum chromodynamics and contituent quark model pictures in the light-front quantization with some comparison and contrast to the ordinary equal-time bridge a la Bogoliubov-Valatin transformation, we discuss some newer development of the light-front quark model phenomenology in exclusive processes including the embedded state. The skewed parton distribution appears to be a good testing ground for our new effective treatment of the light-front nonvalence contributions in timelike exclusive processes.

Perturbative QCD and factorization of coherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron

We analyze the predictions of perturbative QCD for pion photoproduction on the deuteron, gamma D -> pi^0 D, at large momentum transfer using the reduced amplitude formalism. The cluster decomposition of the deuteron wave function at small binding only allows the nuclear coherent process to proceed if each nucleon absorbs an equal fraction of the overall momentum transfer. Furthermore, each nucleon must scatter while remaining close to its mass shell. Thus the nuclear photoproduction amplitude, M_{gamma D -> pi^0 D}(u,t), factorizes as a product of three factors: (1) the nucleon photoproduction amplitude, M_{gamma N_1 -> pi^0 N_1}(u/4,t/4), at half of the overall momentum transfer, (2) a nucleon form factor, F_{N_2}(t/4), at half the overall momentum transfer, and (3) the reduced deuteron form factor, f_d(t), which according to perturbative QCD, has the same monopole falloff as a meson form factor. A comparison with the recent JLAB data for gamma D -> pi^0 D of Meekins et al. [Phys. Rev. C 60, 052201 (1999)] and the available gamma p -> pi^0 p data shows good agreement between the perturbative QCD prediction and experiment over a large range of momentum transfers and center of mass angles. The reduced amplitude prediction is consistent with the constituent counting rule, p^11_T M_{gamma D -> pi^0 D} -> F(theta_cm), at large momentum transfer. This is found to be consistent with measurements for photon lab energies E_gamma > 3 GeV at theta_cm=90 degrees and $\elab > 10$ GeV at 136 degrees.

New Progress in Time-Like Exclusive Processes

We discuss a necessary nonvalence contribution in timelike exclusive processes. Following a Schwinger-Dyson type of approach, we relate the nonvalence contribution to an ordinary light-front wave function that has been extensively tested in the spacelike exclusive processes. A complicate multi-body energy denominator is exactly cancelled in summing the light-front time-ordered amplitudes. Applying our method to $K_{\ell3}$ and $D^0\to K^- \ell^+ ν_l$ where a rather substantial nonvalence contribution is expected, we find not only an improvement in comparing with the experimental data but also a covariance(i.e. frame-indepndence) of existing light-front constituent quark model.
