Postive Semidefinite and Sum of Squares Biquadratic Polynomials

Hilbert proved in 1888 that a positive semi-definite (PSD) homogeneous quartic polynomial of three variables always can be expressed as the sum of squares (SOS) of three quadratic polynomials, and a psd homogeneous quartic polynomial of four variables may not be sos. Only after 87 years, in 1975, Choi gave the explicit expression of such a psd-not-sos (PNS) homogeneous quartic polynomial of four variables. An $m \times n$ biquadratic polynomial is a homogeneous quartic polynomial of $m+n$ variables. In this paper, we show that an $m \times n$ biquadratic polynomial can be expressed as a tripartite homogeneous quartic polynomial of $m+n-1$ variables. Therefore, {by Hilbert's theorem}, a $2 \times 2$ PSD biquadratic polynomial can be expressed as the sum of squares of three quadratic polynomials. This improves the result of Calderón in 1973, who proved that a $2 \times 2$ biquadratic polynomial can be expressed as the sum of squares of nine quadratic polynomials. Furthermore, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for an $m \times n$ psd biquadratic polynomial to be sos, and show that if such a polynomial is sos, then its sos rank is at most $mn$. Then we give a constructive proof of the sos form of a $2 \times 2$ psd biquadratic polynomial in three cases.

Quasi-Irreducibility of Nonnegative Biquadratic Tensors

While the adjacency tensor of a bipartite 2-graph is a nonnegative biquadratic tensor, it is inherently reducible. To address this limitation, we introduce the concept of quasi-irreducibility in this paper. The adjacency tensor of a bipartite 2-graph is quasi-irreducible if that bipartite 2-graph is not bi-separable. This new concept reveals important spectral properties: although all M$^+$-eigenvalues are M$^{++}$-eigenvalues for irreducible nonnegative biquadratic tensors, the M$^+$-eigenvalues of a quasi-irreducible nonnegative biquadratic tensor can be either M$^0$-eigenvalues or M$^{++}$-eigenvalues. Furthermore, we establish a max-min theorem for the M-spectral radius of a nonnegative biquadratic tensor.

Nonnegative Biquadratic Tensors

An M-eigenvalue of a nonnegative biquadratic tensor is referred to as an M$^+$-eigenvalue if it has a pair of nonnegative M-eigenvectors. If furthermore that pair of M-eigenvectors is positive, then that M$^+$-eigenvalue is called an M$^{++}$-eigenvalue. A nonnegative biquadratic tensor has at least one M$^+$ eigenvalue, and the largest M$^+$-eigenvalue is both the largest M-eigenvalue and the M-spectral radius. For irreducible nonnegative biquadratic tensors, all the M$^+$-eigenvalues are M$^{++}$-eigenvalues. Although the M$^+$-eigenvalues of irreducible nonnegative biquadratic tensors are not unique in general, we establish a sufficient condition to ensure their uniqueness. For an irreducible nonnegative biquadratic tensor, the largest M$^+$-eigenvalue has a max-min characterization, while the smallest M$^+$-eigenvalue has a min-max characterization. A Collatz algorithm for computing the largest M$^+$-eigenvalues is proposed. Numerical results are reported.

An Accelerated Alternating Partial Bregman Algorithm for ReLU-based Matrix Decomposition

Despite the remarkable success of low-rank estimation in data mining, its effectiveness diminishes when applied to data that inherently lacks low-rank structure. To address this limitation, in this paper, we focus on non-negative sparse matrices and aim to investigate the intrinsic low-rank characteristics of the rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function. We first propose a novel nonlinear matrix decomposition framework incorporating a comprehensive regularization term designed to simultaneously promote useful structures in clustering and compression tasks, such as low-rankness, sparsity, and non-negativity in the resulting factors. This formulation presents significant computational challenges due to its multi-block structure, non-convexity, non-smoothness, and the absence of global gradient Lipschitz continuity. To address these challenges, we develop an accelerated alternating partial Bregman proximal gradient method (AAPB), whose distinctive feature lies in its capability to enable simultaneous updates of multiple variables. Under mild and theoretically justified assumptions, we establish both sublinear and global convergence properties of the proposed algorithm. Through careful selection of kernel generating distances tailored to various regularization terms, we derive corresponding closed-form solutions while maintaining the $L$-smooth adaptable property always holds for any $L\ge 1$. Numerical experiments, on graph regularized clustering and sparse NMF basis compression confirm the effectiveness of our model and algorithm.

Biquadratic Tensors: Eigenvalues and Structured Tensors

The covariance tensors in statistics{, elasticity tensor in solid mechanics, Riemann curvature tensor in relativity theory are all biquadratic tensors that are weakly symmetric, but not symmetric in general. Motivated by this, in this paper, we consider nonsymmetric biquadratic tensors, and study possible conditions and algorithms for identifying positive semi-definiteness and definiteness of such biquadratic tensors. We extend M-eigenvalues to nonsymmetric biquadratic tensors, prove that a general biquadratic tensor has at least one M-eigenvalue, and show that a general biquadratic tensor is positive semi-definite if and only if all of its M-eigenvalues are nonnegative, and a general biquadratic tensor is positive definite if and only if all of its M-eigenvalues are positive. We present a Gershgorin-type theorem for biquadratic tensors, and show that (strictly) diagonally dominated biquadratic tensors are positive semi-definite (definite). We introduce Z-biquadratic tensors, M-biquadratic tensors, strong M-biquadratic tensors, B$_0$-biquadratic tensors and B-biquadratic tensors. We show that M-biquadratic tensors and symmetric B$_0$-biquadratic tensors are positive semi-definite, and that strong M-biquadratic tensors and symmetric B-biquadratic tensors are positive definite. A Riemannian LBFGS method for computing the smallest M-eigenvalue of a general biquadratic tensor is presented. Numerical results are reported.

Even Order Pascal Tensors are Positive Definite

In this paper, we show that even order Pascal tensors are positive definite, and odd order Pascal tensors are strongly completely positive. The significance of these is that our induction proof method also holds for some other families of completely positives tensors, whose construction satisfies certain rules, such an inherence property holds. We show that for all tensors in such a family, even order tensors would be positive definite, and odd order tensors would be strongly completely positive, as long as the matrices in this family are positive definite. In particular, we show that even order generalized Pascal tensors would be positive definite, and odd order generalized Pascal tensors would be strongly completely positive, as long as generalized Pascal matrices are positive definite. We also investigate even order positive definiteness and odd order strongly completely positivity for fractional Hadamard power tensors. Furthermore, we study determinants of Pascal tensors. We prove that the determinant of the $m$th order two dimensional symmetric Pascal tensor is equal to the $m$th power of the factorial of $m-1$.

Multi-step Inertial Accelerated Doubly Stochastic Gradient Methods for Block Term Tensor Decomposition

In this paper, we explore a specific optimization problem that combines a differentiable nonconvex function with a nondifferentiable function for multi-block variables, which is particularly relevant to tackle the multilinear rank-($L_r$,$L_r$,1) block-term tensor decomposition model with a regularization term. While existing algorithms often suffer from high per-iteration complexity and slow convergence, this paper employs a unified multi-step inertial accelerated doubly stochastic gradient descent method tailored for structured rank-$\left(L_r, L_r, 1\right)$ tensor decomposition, referred to as Midas-LL1. We also introduce an extended multi-step variance-reduced stochastic estimator framework. Our analysis under this new framework demonstrates the subsequential and sequential convergence of the proposed algorithm under certain conditions and illustrates the sublinear convergence rate of the subsequence, showing that the Midas-LL1 algorithm requires at most $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^{-2})$ iterations in expectation to reach an $\varepsilon$-stationary point. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on several datasets, and the results indicate that Midas-LL1 outperforms existing state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of both computational speed and solution quality.

Strongly Positive Semi-Definite Tensors and Strongly SOS Tensors

We introduce {odd-order} strongly PSD (positive semi-definite) tensors which map real vectors to nonnegative vectors. We then introduce odd-order strongly SOS (sum-of-squares) tensors. A strongly SOS tensor maps real vectors to nonnegative vectors whose components are all SOS polynomials. Strongly SOS tensors are strongly PSD tensors. Odd order completely positive tensors are strongly SOS tensors. We also introduce strict Hankel tensors, which are also strongly SOS tensors. Odd order Hilbert tensors are strict Hankel tensors. However, the Laplacian tensor of a uniform hypergraph may not be strongly PSD. This motivates us to study wider PSD-like tensors. A cubic tensor is said to be a generalized PSD tensor if its corresponding symmetrization tensor has no negative H-eigenvalue. In the odd order case, this extension contains a peculiar tensor class, whose members have no H-eigenvalues at all. We call such tensors barren tensors, and the other generalized PSD symmetric tensors genuinely PSD symmetric tensors. In the odd order case, genuinely PSD tensors embrace various useful structured tensors, such as strongly PSD tensors, symmetric M-tensors and Laplacian tensors of uniform hypergraphs. However, there are exceptions. It is known an even order symmetric B-tensor is a PSD tensor. We give an example of an odd order symmetric B-tensor, which is a barren tensor.

Triangular Decomposition of Third Order Hermitian Tensors

We define lower triangular tensors, and show that all diagonal entries of such a tensor are eigenvalues of that tensor. We then define lower triangular sub-symmetric tensors, and show that the number of independent entries of a lower triangular sub-symmetric tensor is the same as that of a symmetric tensor of the same order and dimension. We further introduce third order Hermitian tensors, third order positive semi-definite Hermitian tensors, and third order positive semi-definite symmetric tensors. Third order completely positive tensors are positive semi-definite symmetric tensors. Then we show that a third order positive semi-definite Hermitian tensor is triangularly decomposable. This generalizes the classical result of Cholesky decomposition in matrix analysis.

Unit Dual Quaternion Directed Graphs, Formation Control and General Weighted Directed Graphs

We study the multi-agent formation control problem in a directed graph. The relative configurations are expressed by unit dual quaternions (UDQs). We call such a weighted directed graph a unit dual quaternion directed graph (UDQDG). We show that a desired relative configuration scheme is reasonable or balanced in a UDQDG if and only if the dual quaternion Laplacian is similar to the unweighted Laplacian of the underlying directed graph. A direct method and a unit gain graph method are proposed to solve the balance problem of general unit weighted directed graphs. We then study the balance problem of general non-unit weighted directed graphs. Numerical experiments for UDQDG are reported.

A Momentum Accelerated Algorithm for ReLU-based Nonlinear Matrix Decomposition

Recently, there has been a growing interest in the exploration of Nonlinear Matrix Decomposition (NMD) due to its close ties with neural networks. NMD aims to find a low-rank matrix from a sparse nonnegative matrix with a per-element nonlinear function. A typical choice is the Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation function. To address over-fitting in the existing ReLU-based NMD model (ReLU-NMD), we propose a Tikhonov regularized ReLU-NMD model, referred to as ReLU-NMD-T. Subsequently, we introduce a momentum accelerated algorithm for handling the ReLU-NMD-T model. A distinctive feature, setting our work apart from most existing studies, is the incorporation of both positive and negative momentum parameters in our algorithm. Our numerical experiments on real-world datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm. Moreover, the code is available at https://github.com/nothing2wang/NMD-TM.

Non-convex Pose Graph Optimization in SLAM via Proximal Linearized Riemannian ADMM

Pose graph optimization (PGO) is a well-known technique for solving the pose-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problem. In this paper, we represent the rotation and translation by a unit quaternion and a three-dimensional vector, and propose a new PGO model based on the von Mises-Fisher distribution. The constraints derived from the unit quaternions are spherical manifolds, and the projection onto the constraints can be calculated by normalization. Then a proximal linearized Riemannian alternating direction method of multipliers (PieADMM) is developed to solve the proposed model, which not only has low memory requirements, but also can update the poses in parallel. Furthermore, we establish the iteration complexity of $O(1/ε^{2})$ of PieADMM for finding an $ε$-stationary solution of our model. The efficiency of our proposed algorithm is demonstrated by numerical experiments on two synthetic and four 3D SLAM benchmark datasets.

Extended alternating structure-adapted proximal gradient algorithm for nonconvex nonsmooth problems

Alternating structure-adapted proximal (ASAP) gradient algorithm (M. Nikolova and P. Tan, SIAM J Optim, 29:2053-2078, 2019) has drawn much attention due to its efficiency in solving nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problems. However, the multiblock nonseparable structure confines the performance of ASAP to far-reaching practical problems, e.g., coupled tensor decomposition. In this paper, we propose an extended ASAP (eASAP) algorithm for nonconvex nonsmooth optimization whose objective is the sum of two nonseperable functions and a coupling one. By exploiting the blockwise restricted prox-regularity, eASAP is capable of minimizing the objective whose coupling function is multiblock nonseparable. Moreover, we analyze the global convergence of eASAP by virtue of the Aubin property on partial subdifferential mapping and the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property on the objective. Furthermore, the sublinear convergence rate of eASAP is built upon the proximal point algorithmic framework under some mild conditions. Numerical simulations on multimodal data fusion demonstrate the compelling performance of the proposed method.

Moore Determinant of Dual Quaternion Hermitian Matrices

In this paper, we extend the Chen and Moore determinants of quaternion Hermitian} matrices to dual quaternion Hermitian matrices. We show the Chen determinant of dual quaternion Hermitian {matrices is invariant under addition, switching, multiplication, and unitary operations at the both hand sides. We then show the Chen and Moore determinants of dual quaternion Hermitian matrices are equal to each other, and they are also equal to the products of eigenvalues. The characteristic polynomial of a dual quaternion Hermitian matrix is also studied.

Spectral Properties of Dual Unit Gain Graphs

In this paper, we study dual quaternion and dual complex unit gain graphs and their spectral properties in a unified frame of dual unit gain graphs. Unit dual quaternions represent rigid movements in the 3D space, and have wide applications in robotics and computer graphics. Dual complex numbers found application in brain science recently. We establish the interlacing theorem for dual unit gain graphs, and show that the spectral radius of a dual unit gain graph is always not greater than the spectral radius of the underlying graph, and these two radii are equal if and only if the dual gain graph is balanced. By using the dual cosine functions, we establish the closed form of eigenvalues of adjacency and Laplacian matrices of dual complex and quaternion unit gain cycles. We then show the coefficient theorem holds for dual unit gain graphs. Similar results hold for the spectral radius of the Laplacian matrix of the dual unit gain graph too.

Pseudo MIMO (pMIMO): An Energy and Spectral Efficient MIMO-OFDM System

This article introduces an energy and spectral efficient multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) transmission scheme designed for the future sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks. The approach involves connecting each receiving radio frequency (RF) chain with multiple antenna elements and conducting sample-level adjustments for receiving beamforming patterns. The proposed system architecture and the dedicated signal processing methods enable the scheme to transmit a bigger number of parallel data streams than the number of receiving RF chains, achieving a spectral efficiency performance close to that of a fully digital (FD) MIMO system with the same number of antenna elements, each equipped with an RF chain. We refer to this system as a ''pseudo MIMO'' system due to its ability to mimic the functionality of additional invisible RF chains. The article begins with introducing the underlying principles of pseudo MIMO and discussing potential hardware architectures for its implementation. We then highlight several advantages of integrating pseudo MIMO into next-generation wireless networks. To demonstrate the superiority of our proposed pseudo MIMO transmission scheme to conventional MIMO systems, simulation results are presented. Additionally, we validate the feasibility of this new scheme by building the first pseudo MIMO prototype. Furthermore, we present some key challenges and outline potential directions for future research.

Eigenvalues of Dual Hermitian Matrices with Application in Formation Control

We propose a supplement matrix method for computing eigenvalues of a dual Hermitian matrix, and discuss its application in multi-agent formation control. Suppose we have a ring, which can be the real field, the complex field, or the quaternion ring. We study dual number symmetric matrices, dual complex Hermitian matrices and dual quaternion Hermitian matrices in a unified frame of dual Hermitian matrices. An $n \times n$ dual Hermitian matrix has $n$ dual number eigenvalues. We define determinant, characteristic polynomial and supplement matrices for a dual Hermitian matrix. Supplement matrices are Hermitian matrices in the original ring. The standard parts of the eigenvalues of that dual Hermitian matrix are the eigenvalues of the standard part Hermitian matrix in the original ring, while the dual parts of the eigenvalues of that dual Hermitian matrix are the eigenvalues of those supplement matrices. Hence, by applying any practical method for computing eigenvalues of Hermitian matrices in the original ring, we have a practical method for computing eigenvalues of a dual Hermitian matrix. We call this method the supplement matrix method. In multi-agent formation control, a desired relative configuration scheme may be given. People need to know if this scheme is reasonable such that a feasible solution of configurations of these multi-agents exists. By exploring the eigenvalue problem of dual Hermitian matrices, and its link with the unit gain graph theory, we open a cross-disciplinary approach to solve the relative configuration problem. Numerical experiments are reported.

Inertial Accelerated Stochastic Mirror Descent for Large-Scale Generalized Tensor CP Decomposition

The majority of classic tensor CP decomposition models are designed for squared loss, employing Euclidean distance as a local proximal term. However, the Euclidean distance is unsuitable for the generalized loss function applicable to various types of real-world data, such as integer and binary data. Consequently, algorithms developed under the squared loss are not easily adaptable to handle these generalized losses, partially due to the lack of the gradient Lipschitz continuity. This paper considers the generalized tensor CP decomposition. We use the Bregman distance as the proximal term and propose an inertial accelerated block randomized stochastic mirror descent algorithm (iTableSMD). Within a broader multi-block variance reduction and inertial acceleration framework, we demonstrate the sublinear convergence rate for the subsequential sequence produced by the iTableSMD algorithm. We further show that iTableSMD requires at most O(ε^{-2}) iterations in expectation to attain an ε-stationary point and establish the global convergence of the sequence. Numerical experiments on real datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm is efficient and achieve better performance than the existing state-of-the-art methods.
