Enhanced Reconstruction of Sub-GeV Neutrinos Charged Current Interactions in LArTPC

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the reconstruction of sub-GeV neutrino charged-current interactions within a Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC). We demonstrate that traditional charge-based calorimetry is fundamentally limited at sub-GeV scales by significant fluctuations in recombination and missing hadronic energy. We show that energy reconstruction using energy deposited as scintillation light ($L$) partially benefits from the self-compensating light effect. At neutrino energies above 400 MeV, the light-only reconstruction still outperforms charge-only methods that can separate EM and hadronic objects. The performance of the two remains comparable below 300 MeV. Using the energy-deposit information from both detector signals, we demonstrate at least 70\% efficiency can be achieved in tagging electron neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. By using a proximity-based algorithm coupled with a geometric lepton-exclusion cone, we also demonstrate the ability to isolate neutron-induced energy depositions from background. This enables an improvement of sub-GeV direction reconstruction by about 20 degrees for antineutrinos. This study provides new insights into how to enhance the physics reach of future LArTPC atmospheric neutrino analyses.

Physics Prospects with MeV Neutrino-Argon Charged Current Interactions using Enhanced Photon Detection in Future LArTPCs

We investigate MeV-scale electron neutrino charged current interactions in a liquid argon time projection chamber equipped with an enhanced photon detection system. Using simulations of deposited energy in charge and light calorimetry, we explore the potential for dual calorimetric neutrino energy reconstruction. We found energy reconstruction based on light-only calorimetry has a better resolution than combined charge and light calorimetry when hadrons are produced in these events. Meanwhile, enhanced light detection offers improved nanosecond timing resolution and broad optical coverage, enabling neutron tagging and identification of delayed low-energy gamma emissions. These advancements open new avenues in low-energy neutrino physics in next-generation LArTPCs.

Self-compensating Light Calorimetry with Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber for GeV Neutrino Physics

The Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) is a powerful dual calorimeter capable of estimating particle energy from both ionization charge and scintillation light. Our study shows that, due to the recombination luminescence, the LArTPC functions as a self-compensating light calorimeter: the missing energy in the hadronic component is compensated for by the increased luminescence relative to the electromagnetic component. Using 0.5--5 GeV electron neutrino charged current interactions as a case study, we show that good compensation of the electron-to-hadron response ratio (e/h) from 1--1.05 can be achieved across a broad range of drift electric fields (0.2--1.8 kV/cm), with better performance for neutrino energies above 2 GeV. This study highlights the potential of light calorimetry in LArTPCs for GeV neutrino energy reconstruction, complementing traditional charge calorimetry. Under ideal conditions of uniform light collection, we show that LArTPC light calorimetry can achieve an energy resolution comparable to the charge imaging calorimetry. Challenges arising from nonuniform light collection in large LArTPCs can be mitigated with a position-dependent light yield correction derived from 3D charge signal imaging.

Muon antineutrino charged-current cross sections without pions in the final state at T2K

T2K (Tokai to Kamioka) is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located in Japan and designed to measure neutrino flavor oscillation using an off-axis neutrino beam. Data collected recently with an anti-neutrino beam allows T2K to measure cross sections for anti-neutrinos at an energy around 600 MeV using the off-axis near detector. These measurements, along with the analogous for neutrinos, are vital inputs to neutrino oscillation analyses and their interpretation. In this work preliminary results on the simultaneous extraction of the muon neutrino and anti-neutrino charged-current cross sections without pions in the final state is presented. The two cross sections will be measured as a function of muon kinematic allowing to evaluate the sum, difference and asymmetry between the two cross sections. These results are useful for comparison and tuning of theoretical models of nuclear effects such as multinucleon interactions (also know as 2 particle-2 hole processes).
