Discrete equations from B\"{a}cklund transformations of the fifth Painlev\'{e} equation

In this paper discrete equations are derived from B\"{a}cklund transformations of the fifth Painlev\'{e} equation, including a new discrete equation which has ternary symmetry. There are two classes of rational solutions of the fifth Painlev\'{e} equation, one expressed in terms of the generalised Laguerre polynomials and the other in terms of the generalised Umemura polynomials, both of which can be expressed as Wronskians of Laguerre polynomials. Hierarchies of rational solutions of the discrete equations are derived in terms of the generalised Laguerre and generalised Umemura polynomials. It is known that there is nonuniqueness of some rational solutions of the fifth Painlev\'{e} equation. Pairs of nonunique rational solutions are used to derive distinct hierarchies of rational solutions which satisfy the same discrete equation.

Rational Solutions of the Fifth Painlev\'e Equation. Generalised Laguerre Polynomials

In this paper rational solutions of the fifth Painlev\'e equation are discussed. There are two classes of rational solutions of the fifth Painlev\'e equation, one expressed in terms of the generalised Laguerre polynomials, which are the main subject of this paper, and the other in terms of the generalised Umemura polynomials. Both the generalised Laguerre polynomials and the generalised Umemura polynomials can be expressed as Wronskians of Laguerre polynomials specified in terms of specific families of partitions. The properties of the generalised Laguerre polynomials are determined and various differential-difference and discrete equations found. The rational solutions of the fifth Painlev\'e equation, the associated $\sigma$-equation and the symmetric fifth Painlev\'e system are expressed in terms of generalised Laguerre polynomials. Non-uniqueness of the solutions in special cases is established and some applications are considered. In the second part of the paper, the structure of the roots of the polynomials are investigated for all values of the parameter. Interesting transitions between root structures through coalescences at the origin are discovered, with the allowed behaviours controlled by hook data associated with the partition. The discriminants of the generalised Laguerre polynomials are found and also shown to be expressible in terms of partition data. Explicit expressions for the coefficients of a general Wronskian Laguerre polynomial defined in terms of a single partition are given.

Geometric aspects of the ODE/IM correspondence

This review describes a link between Lax operators, embedded surfaces and Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations for integrable quantum field theories. This surprising connection between classical and quantum models is undoubtedly one of the most striking discoveries that emerged from the off-critical generalisation of the ODE/IM correspondence, which initially involved only conformal invariant quantum field theories. We will mainly focus of the KdV and sinh-Gordon models. However, various aspects of other interesting systems, such as affine Toda field theories and non-linear sigma models, will be mentioned. We also discuss the implications of these ideas in the AdS/CFT context, involving minimal surfaces and Wilson loops. This work is a follow-up of the ODE/IM review published more than ten years ago by JPA, before the discovery of its off-critical generalisation and the corresponding geometrical interpretation. (Partially based on lectures given at the Young Researchers Integrability School 2017, in Dublin.)

Coefficients of Wronskian Hermite polynomials

We study Wronskians of Hermite polynomials labelled by partitions and use the combinatorial concepts of cores and quotients to derive explicit expressions for their coefficients. These coefficients can be expressed in terms of the characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, and also in terms of hook lengths. Further, we derive the asymptotic behaviour of the Wronskian Hermite polynomials when the length of the core tends to infinity, while fixing the quotient. Via this combinatorial setting, we obtain in a natural way the generalization of the correspondence between Hermite and Laguerre polynomials to Wronskian Hermite polynomials and Wronskians involving Laguerre polynomials. Lastly, we generalize most of our results to polynomials that have zeros on the $p$-star.

The asymmetric quantum Rabi model and generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials

Starting with the Gaudin-like Bethe ansatz equations associated with the quasi-exactly solved (QES) exceptional points of the asymmetric quantum Rabi model (AQRM) a spectral equivalence is established with QES hyperbolic Schrödinger potentials on the line. This leads to particular QES Pöschl-Teller potentials. The complete spectral equivalence is then established between the AQRM and generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials. This result extends a previous mapping between the symmetric quantum Rabi model and a QES Pöschl-Teller potential. The complete spectral equivalence between the two systems suggests that the physics of the generalised Pöschl-Teller potentials may also be explored in experimental realisations of the quantum Rabi model.

Bethe Ansatz equations for the classical $A_n^{(1)}$ affine Toda field theories

We establish a correspondence between classical $A_n^{(1)}$ affine Toda field theories and $A_n$ Bethe Ansatz systems. We show that the connection coefficients relating specific solutions of the associated classical linear problem satisfy functional relations of the type that appear in the context of the massive quantum integrable model.

Quasi-exact solvability, resonances and trivial monodromy in ordinary differential equations

A correspondence between the sextic anharmonic oscillator and a pair of third-order ordinary differential equations is used to investigate the phenomenon of quasi-exact solvability for eigenvalue problems involving differential operators with order greater than two. In particular, links with Bender-Dunne polynomials and resonances between independent solutions are observed for certain second-order cases, and extended to the higher-order problems.

BEC-BCS crossover in a p+ip-wave pairing Hamiltonian coupled to bosonic molecular pairs

We analyse a p+ip-wave pairing BCS Hamiltonian, coupled to a single bosonic degree of freedom representing a molecular condensate, and investigate the nature of the BEC-BCS crossover for this system. For a suitable restriction on the coupling parameters, we show that the model is integrable and we derive the exact solution by the algebraic Bethe ansatz. In this manner we also obtain explicit formulae for correlation functions and compute these for several cases. We find that the crossover between the BEC state and the strong pairing p+ip phase is smooth for this model, with no intermediate quantum phase transition.

Exact solution of the p+ip pairing Hamiltonian and a hierarchy of integrable models

Using the well-known trigonometric six-vertex solution of the Yang-Baxter equation we derive an integrable pairing Hamiltonian with anyonic degrees of freedom. The exact algebraic Bethe ansatz solution is obtained using standard techniques. From this model we obtain several limiting models, including the pairing Hamiltonian with p+ip-wave symmetry. An in-depth study of the p+ip model is then undertaken, including a mean-field analysis, analytic and numerical solution of the Bethe ansatz equations, and an investigation of the topological properties of the ground-state wavefunction. Our main result is that the ground-state phase diagram of the p+ip model consists of three phases. There is the known boundary line with gapless excitations that occurs for vanishing chemical potential, separating the topologically trivial strong pairing phase and the topologically non-trivial weak pairing phase. We argue that a second boundary line exists separating the weak pairing phase from a topologically trivial weak coupling BCS phase, which includes the Fermi sea in the limit of zero coupling. The ground state on this second boundary line is the Moore-Read state.

PT symmetry breaking and exceptional points for a class of inhomogeneous complex potentials

We study a three-parameter family of PT-symmetric Hamiltonians, related via the ODE/IM correspondence to the Perk-Schultz models. We show that real eigenvalues merge and become complex at quadratic and cubic exceptional points, and explore the corresponding Jordon block structures by exploiting the quasi-exact solvability of a subset of the models. The mapping of the phase diagram is completed using a combination of numerical, analytical and perturbative approaches. Among other things this reveals some novel properties of the Bender-Dunne polynomials, and gives a new insight into a phase transition to infinitely-many complex eigenvalues that was first observed by Bender and Boettcher. A new exactly-solvable limit, the inhomogeneous complex square well, is also identified.

From PT-symmetric quantum mechanics to conformal field theory

One of the simplest examples of a PT-symmetric quantum system is the scaling Yang-Lee model, a quantum field theory with cubic interaction and purely imaginary coupling. We give a historical review of some facts about this model in d <= 2 dimensions, from its original definition in connection with phase transitions in the Ising model and its relevance to polymer physics, to the role it has played in studies of integrable quantum field theory and of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics. We also discuss some more general results on PT-symmetric quantum mechanics and the ODE/IM correspondence, and mention applications to magnetic systems and cold atom physics.

On the ODE/IM correspondence for minimal models

Within the framework of the ODE/IM correspondence, we show that the minimal conformal field theories with c<1 emerge naturally from the monodromy properties of certain families of ordinary differential equations.

The ODE/IM Correspondence

This article reviews a recently-discovered link between integrable quantum field theories and certain ordinary differential equations in the complex domain. Along the way, aspects of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics are discussed, and some elementary features of the six-vertex model and the Bethe ansatz are explained.

Pseudo-differential equations, and the Bethe Ansatz for the classical Lie algebras

The correspondence between ordinary differential equations and Bethe ansatz equations for integrable lattice models in their continuum limits is generalised to vertex models related to classical simple Lie algebras. New families of pseudo-differential equations are proposed, and a link between specific generalised eigenvalue problems for these equations and the Bethe ansatz is deduced. The pseudo-differential operators resemble in form the Miura-transformed Lax operators studied in work on generalised KdV equations, classical W-algebras and, more recently, in the context of the geometric Langlands correspondence. Negative-dimension and boundary-condition dualities are also observed.

On quantum phase crossovers in finite systems

In this work we define a formal notion of a quantum phase crossover for certain Bethe ansatz solvable models. The approach we adopt exploits an exact mapping of the spectrum of a many-body integrable system, which admits an exact Bethe ansatz solution, into the quasi-exactly solvable spectrum of a one-body Schrödinger operator. Bifurcations of the minima for the potential of the Schrödinger operator determine the crossover couplings. By considering the behaviour of particular ground-state correlation functions, these may be identified as quantum phase crossovers in the many-body integrable system with finite particle number. In this approach the existence of the quantum phase crossover is not dependent on the existence of a thermodynamic limit, rendering applications to finite systems feasible. We study two examples of bosonic Hamiltonians which admit second-order crossovers.

Quantifying ground state entanglement of the BCS model

The concept of local concurrence is used to quantify the entanglement between a single qubit and the remainder of a multi-qubit system. For the ground state of the BCS model in the thermodynamic limit the set of local concurrences completely describe the entanglement. As a measure for the entanglement of the full system we investigate the Average Local Concurrence (ALC). We find that the ALC satisfies a simple relation with the order parameter. We then show that for finite systems with fixed particle number, a relation between the ALC and the condensation energy exposes a threshold coupling. Below the threshold, entanglement measures besides the ALC are significant.

Aspects of the ODE/IM correspondence

We review a surprising correspondence between certain two-dimensional integrable models and the spectral theory of ordinary differential equations. Particular emphasis is given to the relevance of this correspondence to certain problems in PT-symmetric quantum mechanics.
