Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays and Air Shower Simulations: a top-bottom view

Stable Superstring Relics (SSR) provide some of the candidates for the possible origin of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). After a brief overview of the motivations for introducing such relics, we address the question whether statistical fluctuations in the formation of the air showers generated by the primary spectrum of protons can be separated from a possible signal of new physics hidden in the first impact with the atmosphere. Our results are generated by using minimal modifications in the cross section of the primaries, and using available simulation codes used by the experimental collaborations. The results indicate that substantial increases in the cross section of the first impact, possibly due to new interactions, are unlikely to be detected in geometrical and/or variations of multiplicities in the cascade.

Hamiltonian and Potentials in Derivative Pricing Models: Exact Results and Lattice Simulations

The pricing of options, warrants and other derivative securities is one of the great success of financial economics. These financial products can be modeled and simulated using quantum mechanical instruments based on a Hamiltonian formulation. We show here some applications of these methods for various potentials, which we have simulated via lattice Langevin and Monte Carlo algorithms, to the pricing of options. We focus on barrier or path dependent options, showing in some detail the computational strategies involved.

Quantum Mechanics, Path Integrals and Option Pricing: Reducing the Complexity of Finance

Quantum Finance represents the synthesis of the techniques of quantum theory (quantum mechanics and quantum field theory) to theoretical and applied finance. After a brief overview of the connection between these fields, we illustrate some of the methods of lattice simulations of path integrals for the pricing of options. The ideas are sketched out for simple models, such as the Black-Scholes model, where analytical and numerical results are compared. Application of the method to nonlinear systems is also briefly overviewed. More general models, for exotic or path-dependent options are discussed.

Supersymmetric Scaling Violations (I). Solving the Supersymmetric DGLAP Evolution

We analize the renormalization group equations of supersymmetric QCD with N=1 for the evolution of parton distributions. For this purpose we develope a simple recursive algorithm in x-space to include both regular regions and supersymmetric regions in the evolution in the step approximation. Supersymmetric distributions are generated within a radiative model, with vanishing initial conditions for the superpartners. Here we focus on a scenario with broken susy, characterized by a lighter gluino coupled to the standard evolution and a decoupled scalar quark. Predictions for the all the distributions are presented.

Seeking experimental probes of string unification

A general prediction of string unification is the existence of exotic states with fractional charges under the free unbroken Abelian generators of the underlying GUT symmetry. Such states may be long-lived due to the existence of weakly broken gauge, or local discrete, symmetries, and may serve as experimental probes of string theory in forthcoming cosmic ray and dark matter experiments.

SUSY Scaling Violations and UHECR

Advancing QCD toward astroparticle applications generates new challenges for perturbation theory, such as the presence of large evolution scales with sizeable scaling violations involving both the initial and the final state of a collision. Possible applications in the context of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) of these effects are discussed.

Stable Superstring Relics and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays

One of the most intriguing experimental results of recent years is the observation of Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) above the GZK cutoff. Plausible candidates for the UHECR primaries are the decay products of a meta--stable matter state with mass of order O(10^{12-15 GeV}), which simultaneously is a good cold dark matter candidate. We study possible meta-stable matter states that arise from Wilson line breaking of GUT symmetries in semi-realistic heterotic string models. In the models that we study the exotic matter states can be classified according to patterns of SO(10) symmetry breaking. We show that cryptons, which are states that carry fractional electric charge $\pm1/2$, and are confined by a hidden gauge group cannot produce viable dark matter. This is due to the fact that, in addition to the lightest neutral bound state, cryptons give rise to meta-stable charged bound states. However, these states may still account for the UHECR events. We argue that the uniton, which is an exotic Standard Model quark but carries ``fractional'' U(1)_{Z'} charge, as well as the singleton, which is a Standard Model singlet with ``fractional'' U(1)_{Z'} charge do provide viable dark matter candidates and can at the same time explain the observed UHECR events.

Supersymmetric Scaling Violations (II). The general supersymmetric Evolution

Using a recursive algorithm to solve the renormalization group equations of N=1 QCD (DGLAP), we describe the most general supersymmetric evolution of the parton distributions. The analysis involves the regular DGLAP evolution, a partial supersymmetric intermediate evolution and a final supersymmetric evolution combined at various matching scales. We use a model in which supersymmetric distributions are radiatively generated at each susy threshold due to the mixing of the QCD anomalous dimensions with the N=1 sector. Various types of matching conditions are considered, reflecting partially broken and exact supersymmetric scenarios with a wide range of susy-breaking mass parameters. Numerical results for all the distributions are presented.

Exclusive Processes at Intermediate Energy, Quark-Hadron Duality and the Transition to Perturbative QCD

Experiments at CEBAF will scan the intermediate-energy region of the QCD dynamics for the nucleon form factors and for Compton Scattering. These experiments will definitely clarify the role of resummed perturbation theory and of quark-hadron duality (QCD sum rules) in this regime. With this perspective in mind, we review the factorization theorem of perturbative QCD for exclusive processes at intermediate energy scales, which embodies the transverse degrees of freedom of a parton and the Sudakov resummation of the corresponding large logarithms. We concentrate on the pion and proton electromagnetic form factors and on pion Compton scattering. New ingredients, such as the evolution of the pion wave function and the complete two-loop expression of the Sudakov factor, are included. The sensitivity of our predictions to the infrared cutoff for the Sudakov evolution is discussed. We also elaborate on QCD sum rule methods for Compton Scattering, which provide an alternative description of this process. We show that, by comparing the local duality analysis to resummed perturbation theory, it is possible to describe the transition of exclusive processes to perturbative QCD.

QCD Evolution Equations: Numerical Algorithms from the Laguerre Expansion

A complete numerical implementation, in both singlet and non-singlet sectors, of a very elegant method to solve the QCD Evolution equations, due to Furmanski and Petronzio, is presented. The algorithm is directly implemented in x-space by a Laguerre expansion of the parton distributions. All the leading-twist distributions are evolved: longitudinally polarized, transversely polarized and unpolarized, to NLO accuracy. The expansion is optimal at finite x, up to reasonably small x-values ($x\approx 10^{-3}$), below which the convergence of the expansion slows down. The polarized evolution is smoother, due to the less singular structure of the anomalous dimensions at small-x. In the region of fast convergence, which covers most of the usual perturbative applications, high numerical accuracy is achieved by expanding over a set of approximately 30 polynomials, with a very modest running time.

Drell-Yan Non-Singlet Spin Cross Sections and Spin Asymmetry to $O(α_s^2)$ (II)

We present predictions for the non-singlet Drell-Yan longitudinal spin cross sections and spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, in proton-proton collisions at large $p_T$ at the RHIC energy of $200\gev$ at next-to-leading order QCD. The higher order corrections to the non-singlet polarized cross section, $σ_{NS}^{LL}$, are sizeable and similar to those found for the unpolarized cross section. The non-singlet asymmetry parameter, $A^{NS}_{LL}$, is very stable against higher order corrections and is a direct measurement of the non-singlet (i.e. valence) polarized quark distributions within the proton.

Spin Dependent Drell Yan in QCD to $O(α_s^2)$ (I). (The Non-Singlet Sector)

A study of the order $α_s^2$ corrections to the Drell Yan (non-singlet) cross section for incoming states of arbitrary longitudinal helicities is presented. The study is performed in the case of the transverse momentum distributions, $(q_T)$, of the lepton pair and extends the calculation of Ellis Martinelli and Petronzio (EMP) to the polarized case. We use the $\bar{MS}$ scheme and the t'Hooft-Veltman regularization for the helicity projectors. From our results one can obtain the bulk of the totally inclusive NNLO cross section for the production of a Drell Yan pair in the non-singlet sector by a simple integration over the heavy photon momentum. We show that in the $\bar{MS}$ helicity is not conserved, unless a finite renormalization is done to reenter into a physical scheme ($\bar{MS}_p$). This aspect of the calculation follows the same trend as in polarized production of single and double photon to $O(α_s^2)$. In the unpolarized limit we reproduce all the results of EMP.

Rapidity Correlations and $ΔG $ from Prompt Photon plus Jet Production in Polarized $pp$ Collisions

A study of prompt photon plus associated jet production is performed at next-to-leading order (O($αα_s^2$)) in QCD at $\sqrt{S}=200-500$ GeV, appropriate for the RHIC polarized $\vec{p}\vec{p}$ collider experiment. Momentum correlations between the jet and photon are examined and the utility of the process as a method for constraining the size and shape of the polarized gluon density of the proton $ΔG$ is examined.

Transverse Spin Dependent Drell Yan in QCD to $O(α_s^2)$ at Large $p_T$ (I). Virtual Corrections and Methods for the Real Emissions

We investigate the role of the transverse spin dependence in Drell Yan lepton pair production to NLO in QCD at parton level. In our analysis we deal with the large $p_T$ distributions. We give very compact expressions for the virtual $O(α_s^2)$ corrections to the cross section and show that the singularities factorize. The study is performed in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme in Dimensional Regularization, and with the t'Hooft-Veltman prescription for $γ_5$. A discussion of the structure of the real emissions is included, and detailed methods for the study of these contributions are formulated.

Spin Dependent Drell Yan and Double Prompt Photon Production to NLO QCD

We present the complete $O(α_s^2)$ radiative corrections to the (non singlet) polarized Drell Yan cross section for the production of a lepton pair with a nonzero $q_T$. The helicity of the incoming states is arbitrary. In the case of double photon, results for the longitudinal asymmetries and on the $p_T$ behavior of the cross section are also given (to $O(α_{em}^2α_s )$) in the central rapidity region of the tagged photon.

Spin Dependent Drell-Yan beyond Leading Order: Non-Singlet Virtual corrections to $O(α_s^2)$

We present parton-level analytical results for the next-to-leading order non-singlet virtual and real corrections to the Drell-Yan differential cross-section. The dependence of the differential cross section on the helicity of the initial state partons is shown explicitly (the spins of the final state partons are summed). The calculation is implemented in dimensional regularization within the $\bar{MS}$ scheme and with the t'Hooft Veltman prescriptions for the n-dimensional $γ_5$. Both the polarized initial state and the unpolarized cross sections can be obtained from our result. Our unpolarized cross section agrees with the previous result of Ellis, Martinelli and Petronzio in the non-singlet sector.

New dark matter candidates motivated from superstring derived unification

Perturbative gauge coupling unification in realistic superstring models suggests the existence of additional heavy down-type quarks, beyond the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The mass scale of the heavy down-type quarks is constrained by requiring agreement between the measured low energy gauge parameters and the string-scale gauge coupling unification. These additional quarks arise and may be stable due to the gauge symmetry breaking by ``Wilson lines'' in the superstring models. We argue that there is a window in the parameter space within which this down-type quark is a good candidate for the dark matter.

Stable Superstring Relics

We investigate the cosmological constraints on exotic stable matter states which arise in realistic free fermionic superstring models. These states appear in the superstring models due to a ``Wilson--line'' breaking of the unifying non--Abelian gauge symmetry. In the models that we consider the unifying $SO(10)$ gauge symmetry is broken at the string level to $SO(6)\times SO(4)$, $SU(5)\times U(1)$ or $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)^2$. The exotic matter states are classified according to the patterns of the $SO(10)$ symmetry breaking. In $SO(6)\times SO(4)$ and $SU(5)\times U(1)$ type models one obtains fractionally charged states with $Q_{\rm e.m.}=\pm1/2$. In $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)^2$ type models one also obtains states with the regular charges under the Standard Model gauge group but with ``fractional'' charges under the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ symmetry. These states include down--like color triplets and electroweak doublets, as well as states which are Standard Model singlets. By analyzing the renormalizable and nonrenormalizable terms of the superpotential in a specific superstring model, we show that these exotic states can be stable. We investigate the cosmological constraints on the masses and relic density of the exotic states. We propose that, while the abundance and the masses of the fractionally charged states are highly constrained, the Standard Model -- like states, and in particular the Standard Model singlet, are good dark matter candidates.
