Betti numbers of Brill-Noether varieties on a general curve

We compute the rational cohomology groups of the smooth Brill-Noether varieties $G^r_d(C)$, parametrizing linear series of degree $d$ and dimension exactly $r$ on a general curve $C$. As an application, we determine the whole intersection cohomology of the singular Brill-Noether loci $W^r_d(C)$, parametrizing complete linear series on $C$ of degree $d$ and dimension at least $r$.

Birational geometry of defective varieties, II

Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ be smooth and irreducible and for $k \ge 0$ let $ν_k(X)$ (resp., $δ_k(X)$) be the $k$-th contact (resp., the $k$-th secant) defect of $X$. For all $k \ge 0$ we have the inequality $ν_k(X) \ge δ_k(X)$ and in the case $k=1$ we characterize projective varieties $X$ for which equality holds, $\dim \mathrm{Sing}(X) \le δ_1(X) -1$ and the generic tangential contact locus is reducible.

When is $\overline{M}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^1,1)$ a Mori dream space?

We prove that the moduli space of $n$-pointed stable maps $\overline{M}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^1,1)$ is a Mori dream space whenever the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ of $(n+3)$-pointed rational curves is. We also show that $\overline{M}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^1,1)$ is a log Fano variety for $n \le 5$.

On the Hilbert scheme of linearly normal curves in $\mathbb{P}^r$ of relatively high degree

Let $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing smooth irreducible and non-degenerate curves of degree $d$ and genus $g$ in $\PP^r$. We denote by $\mathcal{H}^\mathcal{L}_{d,g,r}$ the union of those components of $\mathcal{H}_{d,g,r}$ whose general element is linearly normal and we show that any non-empty $\mathcal{H}^\mathcal{L}_{d,g,r}$ ($d\ge g+r-3$) is irreducible for an extensive range of triples $(d,g,r)$ beyond the Brill-Noether range. This establishes the validity of a suitably modified assertion of Severi regarding the irreducibility of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal{H}^\mathcal{L}_{d,g,r}$ of linearly normal curves for $g+r-3\le d\le g+r$, $r\ge 3$, and $g \ge 2r+3$ if $d=g+r-3$.

Rational curves on fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds

We show that a smooth projective complex manifold of dimension greater than two endowed with an elliptic fiber space structure and with finite fundamental group always contains a rational curve, provided its canonical bundle is relatively trivial. As an application of this result, we prove that any Calabi-Yau manifold that admits a fibration onto a curve whose general fibers are abelian varieties always contains a rational curve.

Non-surjective Gaussian maps for singular curves on K3 surfaces

Let $(S,L)$ be a polarized K3 surface with $\mathrm{Pic}(S) = \mathbb{Z}[L]$ and $L\cdot L=2g-2$, let $C$ be a nonsingular curve of genus $g-1$ and let $f:C\to S$ be such that $f(C) \in \vert L \vert$. We prove that the Gaussian map $Φ_{ω_C(-T)}$ is non-surjective, where $T$ is the degree two divisor over the singular point $x$ of $f(C)$. This generalizes a result of Kemeny with an entirely different proof. It uses the very ampleness of $C$ on the blown-up surface $\widetilde S$ of $S$ at $x$ and a theorem of L'vovski.

A remark on rationally connected varieties and Mori dream spaces

In this short note, we show that a construction by Ottem provides an example of a rationally connected variety that is not birationally equivalent to a Mori dream space. This answers in the negative (at least in the category of terminal varieties) a question posed by Krylov.

Maximal rank of space curves in the range A

We prove the following statement, which has been conjectured since 1985: There exists a constant $K$ such that for all natural numbers $d,g$ with $g\le Kd^{3/2}$ there exists an irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme of $\mathbb{P}^3$ whose general element is a smooth, connected curve of degree $d$ and genus $g$ of maximal rank.

Effective Adjunction Theory

Here we investigate the property of effectivity for adjoint divisors. Among others, we prove the following results: (i) A normal projective variety $X$ with at most canonical singularities is uniruled if and only if for each very ample Cartier divisor $H$ on $X$ we have $H^0(X, m_0K_X+H)=0$ for some $m_0=m_0(H)>0$. (ii) Let $(X,L)$ be a polarized manifold of dimension $4$ and let $t$ be an integer with $t \ge 3$. If $K_X+tL$ is pseudo-effective, then $H^0(X, K_X+tL) \ne 0$.

Towards Fulton's conjecture

We present an alternate proof, much quicker and more straightforward than the original one, of a celebrated Fulton's conjecture on the ample cone of the moduli space of stable rational curves with n marked points in the case n=7.

Guido Castelnuovo's Last Higher Geometry Lectures (1922-23)

Here we present the transcription of the handwritten notes, carefully taken by an anonymous student, of the last lecture course taught by Guido Castelnuovo in 1922-23. The title of the course is "Curve algebriche piane e sghembe" ("Plane and space algebraic curves"): indeed, the language of both the original text and our brief introduction is Italian. The manuscript belongs to the legacy of Alfredo Franchetta (1916-2011) and the typesetting is due to Natascia Zangani. This edition is our modest contribution to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Guido Castelnuovo (1865-1952).

Families of nodal curves in P^r with the expected number of moduli

Let V^{r}_{d,g, δ} be the Hilbert scheme of nodal curves in P^r of degree d and arithmetic genus g with δnodes. Under suitable numerical assumptions on d and g, for every 0 \le δ\le g we construct an irreducible component of V^{r}_{d,g, δ} having the expected number of moduli.

A remark on the Cox ring of $\overline{M}_{0,n}$

We present an elementary inductive argument proving that a certain subring of the Cox ring of the moduli space $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ of stable rational curves with $n$ marked points is finitely generated for every $n \ge 3$.

On the tautological ring of $M_{g,n}$

We state and check the analogue of Faber's conjectures for the tautological ring of the moduli spaces $M_{g,n}$ of $n$-pointed smooth curves of genus $g$.
