On weakly APN functions and 4-bit S-Boxes

S-Boxes are important security components of block ciphers. We provide theoretical results on necessary or sufficient criteria for an (invertible) 4-bit S-Box to be weakly APN. Thanks to a classification of 4-bit invertible S-Boxes achieved independently by De Canniére and Leander-Poschmann, we can strengthen our results with a computer-aided proof.

On the geometry of small weight codewords of dual algebraic geometric codes

We investigate the geometry of the support of small weight codewords of dual algebraic geometric codes on smooth complete intersections by applying the powerful tools recently developed by Alain Couvreur. In particular, by restricting ourselves to the case of Hermitian codes, we recover and extend previous results obtained by the second named author joint with Marco Pellegrini and Massimiliano Sala.

On the birational geometry of the universal Picard variety

We compute the Kodaira dimension of the universal Picard variety P_{d,g} parameterizing line bundles of degree d on curves of genus g under the assumption that (d-g+1,2g-2)=1. We also give partial results for arbitrary degrees d and we investigate for which degrees the universal Picard varieties are birational.

On the geometry of $\bar{S}_2$

We investigate topological properties of the moduli space of spin structures over genus two curves. In particular, we provide a combinatorial description of this space and give a presentation of the (rational) cohomology ring via generators and relations.

3D shape matching and Teichmüller spaces of pointed Riemann surfaces

Shape matching represents a challenging problem in both information engineering and computer science, exhibiting not only a wide spectrum of multimedia applications, but also a deep relation with conformal geometry. After reviewing the theoretical foundations and the practical issues involved in this fashinating subject, we focus on two state-of-the-art approaches relying respectively on local features (landmark points) and on global properties (conformal parameterizations). Finally, we introduce the Teichmüller space of n-pointed Riemann surfaces of genus g into the realm of multimedia, showing that its beautiful geometry provides a natural unified framework for three-dimensional shape matching.

On the rational Picard group of the moduli space of curves

We speculate about an algebro-geometric proof of Harer's theorem on the rational Picard group of the moduli space of smooth complex curves. In particular, we refine the approach of Diaz and Edidin involving the Hurwitz space which parameterizes smooth covers of the projective line.

Koszul cohomology and singular curves

We investigate Koszul cohomology on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we prove both Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures for the general k-gonal nodal curve.

On Green and Green-Lazarfeld conjectures for simple coverings of algebraic curves

Let X be a smooth genus g curve equipped with a simple morphism f: X -> C, where C is either the projective line or more generally any smooth curve whose gonality is computed by finitely many pencils. Here we apply a method developed by Aprodu to prove that if g is big enough then X satisfies both Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures. We also partially address the case in which the gonality of C is computed by infinitely many pencils.

A perfect stratification of M_g for g at most 5

We find for g at most 5 a stratification of depth g-2 of the moduli space of curves M_g with the property that its strata are affine and the classes of their closures provide a Q-basis for the Chow ring of M_g. The first property confirms a conjecture of one of us. The way we establish the second property yields new (and simpler) proofs of theorems of Faber and Izadi which, taken together, amount to the statement that in this range the Chow ring is generated by the lambda-class.

A remark on the rational cohomology of $\bar{S}_{1,n}$

We focus on the rational cohomology of Cornalba's moduli space of spin curves of genus 1 with $n$ marked points. In particular, we show that both its first and its third cohomology group vanish and the second cohomology group is generated by boundary classes.

On the rationality of moduli spaces of pointed curves

Motivated by several recent results on the geometry of the moduli spaces $\bar{\Cal M}_{g,n}$ of stable curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points, here we determine their birational structure for small values of $g$ and $n$ by exploiting suitable plane models of the general curve. More precisely, we show that ${\Cal M}_{g,n}$ is rational for $g=2$ and $1\le n\le 12$, $g=3$ and $1\le n\le 14$, $g=4$ and $1\le n\le 15$, $g=5$ and $1\le n\le 12$.

On the birational geometry of moduli spaces of pointed curves

We prove that the moduli space ${\Cal M}_{g,n}$ of smooth curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points is rational for $g=6$ and $1 \le n \le 8$, and it is unirational for $g=8$ and $1 \le n \le 11$, $g=10$ and $1 \le n \le 3$, $g=12$ and $n = 1$.
