$Γ$- convergence and homogenisation for a class of degenerate functionals

This paper is on $Γ$-convergence for degenerate integral functionals related to homogenisation problems in the Heisenberg group. Here both the rescaling and the notion of invariance or periodicity are chosen in a way motivated by the geometry of the Heisenberg group. Without using special geometric features, these functionals would be neither coercive nor periodic, so classic results do not apply. All the results apply to the more general case of Carnot groups.

Primitive characters of odd order groups

Let $G$ be a finite group of odd order. We show that if $χ$ is an irreducible primitive character of $G$ then for all primes $p$ dividing the order of $G$ there is a conjugacy class such that the $p-$part of $χ(1)$ divides the size of that conjugacy class. We also show that for some classes of groups the entire degree of an irreducible primitive character $χ$ divides the size of a conjugacy class.

A note on non-coercive first order Mean Field Games with analytic data

We study first order evolutive Mean Field Games whose operators are non-coercive. This situation occurs, for instance, when some directions are `forbidden' to the generic player at some points. Under some regularity assumptions, we establish existence of a weak solution of the system. Mainly, we shall describe the evolution of the population's distribution as the push-forward of the initial distribution through a flow, suitably defined in terms of the underlying optimal control problem.

Non-coercive first order Mean Field Games

We study first order evolutive Mean Field Games where the Hamiltonian is non-coercive. This situation occurs, for instance, when some directions are "forbidden" to the generic player at some points. We establish the existence of a weak solution of the system via a vanishing viscosity method and, mainly, we prove that the evolution of the population's density is the push-forward of the initial density through the flow characterized almost everywhere by the optimal trajectories of the control problem underlying the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. As preliminary steps, we need that the optimal trajectories for the control problem are unique (at least for a.e. starting points) and that the optimal controls can be expressed in terms of the horizontal gradient of the value function.

An ergodic problem for Mean Field Games: qualitative properties and numerical simulations

This paper is devoted to some qualitative descriptions and some numerical results for ergodic Mean Field Games systems which arise, e.g., in the homogenization with a small noise limit. We shall consider either power type potentials or logarithmic type ones. In both cases, we shall establish some qualitative properties of the effective Hamiltonian $\bar H$ and of the effective drift $\bar b$. In particular we shall provide two cases where the effective system keeps/looses the Mean Field Games structure, namely where $\nabla_P \bar H(P,α)$ coincides or not with $\bar b(P, α)$. On the other hand, we shall provide some numerical tests validating the aforementioned qualitative properties of $\bar H$ and $\bar b$. In particular, we provide a numerical estimate of the discrepancy $\nabla_P \bar H(P,α)-\bar b(P, α)$.

Stochastic homogenization for functionals with anisotropic rescaling and non-coercive Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We study the stochastic homogenization for a Cauchy problem for a first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equation whose operator is not coercive w.r.t. the gradient variable. We look at Hamiltonians like $H(x,σ(x)p,ω)$ where $σ(x)$ is a matrix associated to a Carnot group. The rescaling considered is consistent with the underlying Carnot group structure, thus anisotropic. We will prove that under suitable assumptions for the Hamiltonian, the solutions of the $\varepsilon$-problem converge to a deterministic function which can be characterized as the unique (viscosity) solution of a suitable deterministic Hamilton-Jacobi problem.

Singular perturbations for a subelliptic operator

We study some classes of singular perturbation problems where the dynamics of the fast variables evolve in the whole space obeying to an infinitesimal operator which is subelliptic and ergodic. We prove that the corresponding ergodic problem admits a solution which is globally Lipschitz continuous and it has at most a logarithmic growth at infinity. The main result of this paper establishes that as $ε\to 0$, the value functions of the singular perturbation problems converge locally uniformly to the solution of an effective problem whose operator and data are explicitly given in terms of the invariant measure for the ergodic operator.

Asymptotic behaviour for operators of Grushin type: invariant measure and singular perturbations

This paper concerns singular perturbation problems where the dynamics of the fast variable evolve in the whole space according to an operator whose infinitesimal generator is formed by a Grushin type second order part and a Ornstein-Uhlenbeck first order part. We prove that the dynamics of the fast variables admits an invariant measure and that the associated ergodic problem has a viscosity solution which is also regular and with logarithmic growth at infinity. These properties play a crucial role in the main theorem which establishes that the value functions of the starting perturbation problems converge to the solution of an effective problem whose operator and initial datum are given in terms of the associated invariant measure.

A flame propagation model on a network with application to a blocking problem

We consider the Cauchy problem \[\partial_t u+H(x,Du)=0 \quad (x,t)\inΓ\times (0,T),\quad u(x,0)=u_0(x) \quad x\inΓ\] where $Γ$ is a network and $H$ is a convex and positive homogeneous Hamiltonian which may change from edge to edge. In the former part of the paper, we prove that the Hopf-Lax type formula gives the (unique) viscosity solution of the problem. In the latter part of the paper we study a flame propagation model in a network and an optimal strategy to block a fire breaking up in some part of a pipeline; some numerical simulations are provided.

The ergodic problem for some subelliptic operators with unbounded coefficients

We study existence and uniqueness of the invariant measure for a stochastic process with degenerate diffusion, whose infinitesimal generator is a linear subelliptic operator in the whole space R N with coefficients that may be unbounded. Such a measure together with a Liouville-type theorem will play a crucial role in two applications: the ergodic problem studied through stationary problems with vanishing discount and the long time behavior of the solution to a parabolic Cauchy problem. In both cases, the constants will be characterized in terms of the invariant measure.

A numerical method for Mean Field Games on networks

We propose a numerical method for stationary Mean Field Games defined on a network. In this framework a correct approximation of the transition conditions at the vertices plays a crucial role. We prove existence, uniqueness and convergence of the scheme and we also propose a least squares method for the solution of the discrete system. Numerical experiments are carried out.

Stationary Mean Field Games systems defined on networks

We consider a stationary Mean Field Games system defined on a network. In this framework, the transition conditions at the vertices play a crucial role: the ones here considered are based on the optimal control interpretation of the problem. We prove separately the well-posedness for each of the two equations composing the system. Finally, we prove existence and uniqueness of the solution of the Mean Field Games system.

Eikonal equations on the Sierpinski gasket

We study the eikonal equation on the Sierpinski gasket in the spirit of the construction of the Laplacian in Kigami [8]: we consider graph eikonal equations on the prefractals and we show that the solutions of these problems converge to a function defined on the fractal set. We characterize this limit function as the unique metric viscosity solution to the eikonal equation on the Sierpinski gasket according to the definition introduced in [3].

A model problem for Mean Field Games on networks

In [14], Gueant, Lasry and Lions considered the model problem ``What time does meeting start?'' as a prototype for a general class of optimization problems with a continuum of players, called Mean Field Games problems. In this paper we consider a similar model, but with the dynamics of the agents defined on a network. We discuss appropriate transition conditions at the vertices which give a well posed problem and we present some numerical results.

Continuous dependence estimates for the ergodic problem of Bellman equation with an application to the rate of convergence for the homogenization problem

This paper is devoted to establish continuous dependence estimates for the ergodic problem for Bellman operators (namely, estimates of (v_1-v_2) where v_1 and v_2 solve two equations with different coefficients). We shall obtain an estimate of ||v_1-v_2||_\infty with an explicit dependence on the L^\infty-distance between the coefficients and an explicit characterization of the constants and also, under some regularity conditions, an estimate of ||v_1-v_2||_{C^2(\R^n)}. Afterwards, the former result will be crucial in the estimate of the rate of convergence for the homogenization of Bellman equations. In some regular cases, we shall obtain the same rate of convergence established in the monographs [11,26] for regular linear problems.

The vanishing viscosity limit for Hamilton-Jacobi equations on Networks

For a Hamilton-Jacobi equation defined on a network, we introduce its vanishing viscosity approximation. The elliptic equation is given on the edges and coupled with Kirchhoff-type conditions at the transition vertices. We prove that there exists exactly one solution of this elliptic approximation and mainly that, as the viscosity vanishes, it converges to the unique solution of the original problem.

Continuous dependence estimates and homogenization of quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second order parabolic equations

Aim of this paper is to extend the continuous dependence estimates proved in \cite{JK1} to quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second-order parabolic equations. As by-product of these estimates, we get an Hölder estimate for bounded solutions of systems and a rate of convergence estimate for the vanishing viscosity approximation. In the second part of the paper we employ similar techniques to study the periodic homogenization of quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second-order uniformly parabolic equations. Finally, some examples are discussed.
