The Calderón's problem via DeepONets

We consider the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and the direct and inverse Calderón's mappings appearing in the Inverse Problem of recovering a smooth bounded and positive isotropic conductivity of a material filling a smooth bounded domain in space. Using deep learning techniques, we prove that these mappings are rigorously approximated by DeepONets, infinite-dimensional counterparts of standard artificial neural networks.

Uniqueness of quasimonochromatic breathers for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries and Zakharov-Kuznetsov models

Consider the generalized Korteweg-de Vries (gKdV) equations with power nonlinearities $q=2,3,4\ldots$ in dimension $N=1$, and the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) model with integer power nonlinearities $q$ in higher dimensions $N\geq 2$. Among these power-type models, the only conjectured equation with space localized time periodic breathers is the modified KdV (mKdV), corresponding to the case $q=3$ and $N=1$. Quasimonochromatic solutions were introduced by Mandel to show that sine-Gordon is the only scalar field model with breather solutions among this class. In this paper we consider smooth generalized quasimonochromatic solutions of arbitrary size for gKdV and ZK models and provide a rigorous proof that mKdV is the unique power-like model among them with spatially localized breathers of this type. In particular, we show the nonexistence of breathers of this class in the ZK models. The method of proof involves the use of the naturally coherent algebra of Bell's polynomials to obtain particularly distinctive structural elliptic PDEs satisfied by breather-like quasimonochromatic solutions. A reduction of the problem to the classification of solutions of these elliptic PDEs in the entire space is performed, and de Giorgi type uniqueness results are proved in this particular case, concluding the uniqueness of the mKdV breather, and the nonexistence of localized smooth breathers in the ZK case. No assumption on well-posedness is made, and the power of the nonlinearity is arbitrary.

The Generalized Riemann Zeta heat flow

We consider the PDE flow associated to Riemann zeta and general Dirichlet $L$-functions. These are models characterized by nonlinearities appearing in classical number theory problems, and generalizing the classical holomorphic Riemann flow studied by Broughan and Barnett. Each zero of a Dirichlet $L$-function is an exact solution of the model. In this paper, we first show local existence of bounded continuous solutions in the Duhamel sense to any Dirichlet $L$-function flow with initial condition far from the pole (as long as this exists). In a second result, we prove global existence in the case of nonlinearities of the form Dirichlet $L$-functions and data initially on the right of a possible pole. Additional global well-posedness and convergence results are proved in the case of the defocusing Riemann zeta nonlinearity and initial data located on the real line and close to the trivial zeros of the zeta. The asymptotic stability of any stable zero is also proved. Finally, in the Riemann zeta case, we consider the ``focusing'' model, and prove blow-up of solutions near the pole $s=1$.

A proof of slow-roll local decay of inflaton fields in cosmology and axion fields in cold dark matter models

We consider the long time behavior of solutions to scalar field models appearing in the theory of cosmological inflation (oscillons) and cold dark matter, in presence or absence of the cosmological constant. These models are not included in standard mathematical literature due to their unusual nonlinearities, which model different features to classical ones. Here we prove that these models fit in the theory of dispersive decay by computing new virials adapted to their setting. Several important examples, candidates to model both effects are studied in detail.

Asymptotic stability of the fourth order $ϕ^4$ kink for general perturbations in the energy space

The Fourth order $ϕ^4$ model generalizes the classical $ϕ^4$ model of quantum field theory, sharing the same kink solution. It is also the dispersive counterpart of the well-known parabolic Cahn-Hilliard equation. Mathematically speaking, the kink is characterized by a fourth-order nonnegative linear operator with a simple kernel at the origin but no spectral gap. In this paper, we consider the kink of this theory, and prove orbital and asymptotic stability for any perturbation in the energy space.

Review on long time asymptotics of large data in some nonintegrable dispersive models

In this short note, we review recent results concerning the long time dynamics of large data solutions to several dispersive models. Starting with the KdV case and ending with the KP models, we review the literature and present new results where virial estimates allow one to prove local energy decay in different regions of space where solitons, lumps or solitary waves are not present.

On Local Energy decay for solution of the Benjamin-Ono equation

We consider the long time dynamics of large solutions to the Benjamin-Ono equation. Using virial techniques, we describe regions of space where every solution in a suitable Sobolev space must decay to zero along sequences of times. Moreover, in the case of exterior regions, we prove complete decay for any sequence of times. The remaining regions not treated here are essentially the strong dispersion and soliton regions.

Stability and instability of breathers in the $U(1)$ Sasa-Satusuma and Nonlinear Schrödinger models

We consider the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations posed along the line, in 1+1 dimensions. Both equations are canonical integrable $U(1)$ models, with solitons, multi-solitons and breather solutions, see Yang for instance. For these two equations, we recognize four distinct localized breather modes: the Sasa-Satsuma for SS, and for NLS the Satsuma-Yajima, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers. Very little is known about the stability of these solutions, mainly because of their complex structure, which does not fit into the classical soliton behavior by Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss. In this paper we find the natural $H^2$ variational characterization for each of them, and prove that Sasa-Satsuma breathers are $H^2$ nonlinearly stable, improving the linear stability property previously proved by Pelinovsky and Yang. Moreover, in the SS case, we provide an alternative understanding of the SS solution as a breather, and not only as an embedded soliton. The method of proof is based in the use of a $H^2$ based Lyapunov functional, in the spirit of the first and third authors, extended this time to the vector-valued case. We also provide another rigorous justification of the instability of the remaining three nonlinear modes (Satsuma-Yajima, Peregrine y Kuznetsov-Ma), based in the study of their corresponding linear variational structure (as critical points of a suitable Lyapunov functional), and complementing the instability results recently proved e.g. in a paper by the third author.

Long time asymptotics of large data in the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili models

We consider the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equations posed on $\mathbb{R}^2$. For both equations, we provide sequential in time asymptotic descriptions of solutions, of arbitrarily large data, inside regions not containing lumps or line solitons, and under minimal regularity assumptions. The proof involves the introduction of two new virial identities adapted to the KP dynamics, showing decay in large regions of space, especially in the KP-I case, where no monotonicity property was previously known. Our results do not require the use of the integrability of KP and are adaptable to well-posed perturbations of KP.

Review on the stability of the Peregrine and related breathers

In this note, we review stability properties in energy spaces of three important nonlinear Schrödinger breathers: Peregrine, Kuznetsov-Ma, and Akhmediev. More precisely, we show that these breathers are unstable according to a standard definition of stability. Suitable Lyapunov functionals are described, as well as their underlying spectral properties. As an immediate consequence of the first variation of these functionals, we also present the corresponding nonlinear ODEs fulfilled by these NLS breathers. The notion of global stability for each breather above mentioned is finally discussed. Some open questions are also briefly mentioned.

A sufficient condition for asymptotic stability of kinks in general (1+1)-scalar field models

We study stability properties of kinks for the (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear scalar field theory models \begin{equation*} \partial_t^2ϕ-\partial_x^2ϕ+ W'(ϕ) = 0, \quad (t,x)\in\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{R}. \end{equation*} The orbital stability of kinks under general assumptions on the potential $W$ is a consequence of energy arguments. Our main result is the derivation of a simple and explicit sufficient condition on the potential $W$ for the asymptotic stability of a given kink. This condition applies to any static or moving kink, in particular no symmetry assumption is required. Last, motivated by the Physics literature, we present applications of the criterion to the $P(ϕ)_2$ theories and the double sine-Gordon theory.

On local energy decay for large solutions of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

We consider the Zakharov-Kutznesov (ZK) equation posed in $\mathbb R^d$, with $d=2$ and $3$. Both equations are globally well-posed in $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$. In this paper, we prove local energy decay of global solutions: if $u(t)$ is a solution to ZK with data in $L^2(\mathbb R^d)$, then \[ \liminf_{t\rightarrow \infty}\int_{Ω_d(t)}u^{2}({\bf x},t)\mathrm{d}{\bf x}=0, \] for suitable regions of space $Ω_d(t)\subseteq \mathbb R^d$ around the origin, growing unbounded in time, not containing the soliton region. We also prove local decay for $H^1(\mathbb R^d)$ solutions. As a byproduct, our results extend decay properties for KdV and quartic KdV equations proved by Gustavo Ponce and the second author. Sequential rates of decay and other strong decay results are also provided as well.

On the asymptotic stability of the sine-Gordon kink in the energy space

We consider the sine-Gordon (SG) equation in 1+1 dimensions. The kink is a static, non-symmetric exact solution to SG, stable in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$. It is well-known that the linearized operator around the kink has a simple kernel and no internal modes. However, it possesses an odd resonance at the bottom of the continuum spectrum, deeply related to the existence of the (in)famous wobbling kink, an explicit periodic-in-time solution of SG around the kink that contradicts the asymptotic stability of the kink in the energy space. In this paper, we further investigate the influence of resonances in the asymptotic stability question. We also discuss the relationship between breathers, wobbling kinks and resonances in the SG setting. By gathering Bäcklund transformations (BT) and Virial estimates around odd perturbations of the vacuum solution, we first identify the manifold of initial data around zero under which BTs are related to the wobbling kink solution. It turns out that (even) small breathers are deeply related to odd perturbations around the kink, including the wobbling kink itself. As a consequence of this result, using BTs we can construct a smooth manifold of initial data close to the kink, for which there is asymptotic stability in the energy space. The initial data has spatial symmetry of the form (kink + odd, even), non-resonant in principle, and not preserved by the flow. This asymptotic stability property holds despite the existence of wobbling kinks in SG. We also show that wobbling kinks are orbitally stable under odd data, and clarify some interesting connections between SG and $ϕ^4$ at the level of linear Bäcklund transformations.

On the long time behavior of solutions to the Intermediate Long Wave equation

We show that the limit infimum, as time $\,t\,$ goes to infinity, of any uniformly bounded in time $H^{3/2+}\cap L^1$ solution to the Intermediate Long Wave equation converge to zero locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $\,t/\log(t)$. Also, for solutions with a mild $L^1$-norm growth in time is established that its limit infimum converge to zero, as time goes to infinity. This confirms the non existence of breathers and other solutions for the ILW model moving with a speed "slower" than a soliton. We also prove that in the far field linearly dominated region, the $L^2$ norm of the solution also converges to zero as time approaches infinity. In addition, we deduced several scenarios for which the initial value problem associated to the generalized Benjamin-Ono and the generalized Intermediate Long Wave equations cannot possess time periodic solutions (breathers). Finally, as it was previously demonstrated in solutions of the KdV and BO equations, we establish the following propagation of regularity result : if the datum $u_0\in H^{3/2+}(\mathbb R)\cap H^m((x_0,\infty))$, for some $\;x_0\in\mathbb R,\,m\in Z^+,\,m\geq 2$, then the corresponding solution $u(t,\cdot)$ of the Intermediate Long Wave equation belongs to $H^m(β,\infty)$, for any $t>0$ and $β\in\mathbb R$.

The Akhmediev Breather is unstable

In this note, we give a rigorous proof that the NLS periodic Akhmediev breather is unstable. The proof follows the ideas in [17], in the sense that a suitable modification of the Stokes wave is the global attractor of the local Akhmediev dynamics for sufficiently large time, and therefore the latter cannot be stable in any suitable finite energy periodic Sobolev space.

Decay in the one dimensional generalized Improved Boussinesq equation

We consider the decay problem for the generalized improved (or regularized) Boussinesq model with power type nonlinearity, a modification of the originally ill-posed shallow water waves model derived by Boussinesq. This equation has been extensively studied in the literature, describing plenty of interesting behavior, such as global existence in the space $H^1\times H^2$, existence of super luminal solitons, and lack of a standard stability method to describe perturbations of solitons. The associated decay problem has been studied by Liu, and more recently by Cho-Ozawa, showing scattering in weighted spaces provided the power of the nonlinearity $p$ is sufficiently large. In this paper we remove that condition on the power $p$ and prove decay to zero in terms of the energy space norm $L^2\times H^1$, for any $p>1$, in two almost complementary regimes: (i) outside the light cone for all small, bounded in time $H^1\times H^2$ solutions, and (ii) decay on compact sets of arbitrarily large bounded in time $H^1\times H^2$ solutions. The proof consists in finding two new virial type estimates, one for the exterior cone problem based in the energy of the solution, and a more subtle virial identity for the interior cone problem, based in a modification of the momentum.

Asymptotic dynamics for the small data weakly dispersive one-dimensional Hamiltonian ABCD system

Consider the Hamiltonian $abcd$ system in one dimension, with data posed in the energy space $H^1\times H^1$. This model, introduced by Bona, Chen and Saut, is a well-known physical generalization of the classical Boussinesq equations. The Hamiltonian case corresponds to the regime where $a,c<0$ and $b=d>0$. Under this regime, small solutions in the energy space are globally defined. A first proof of decay for this $2\times 2$ system was given by the two authors and Poblete and Pozo, in a strongly dispersive regime, i.e. under essentially the conditions \[ b=d > \frac29, \quad a,c<-\frac1{18}. \] Additionally, decay was obtained inside a proper subset of the light cone $(-|t|,|t|)$. In this paper, we improve the last result in three directions. First, we enlarge the set of parameters $(a,b,c,d)$ for which decay to zero is the only available option, considering now the so-called weakly dispersive regime $a,c\sim 0$: we prove decay if now \[ b=d > \frac3{16}, \quad a,c<-\frac1{48}. \] This result is sharp in the case where $a=c$, since for $a,c$ bigger, some $abcd$ linear waves of nonzero frequency do have zero group velocity. Second, we sharply enlarge the interval of decay to consider the whole light cone, that is to say, any interval of the form $|x|\sim |v|t$, for any $|v|<1$. This result rules out, among other things, the existence of nonzero speed solitary waves in the regime where decay is present. Finally, we prove decay to zero of small $abcd$ solutions in exterior regions $|x|\gg |t|$, also discarding super-luminical small solitary waves. These three results are obtained by performing new improved virial estimates for which better decay properties are deduced.

Soliton dynamics for the 1D NLKG equation with symmetry and in the absence of internal modes

We consider the dynamics of even solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $\partial_t^2 ϕ- \partial_x^2 ϕ+ ϕ- |ϕ|^{2α} ϕ=0$ for $α>1$, in the vicinity of the unstable soliton $Q$. Our main result is that stability in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb R)\times L^2(\mathbb R)$ implies asymptotic stability in a local energy norm. In particular, there exists a Lipschitz graph of initial data leading to stable and asymptotically stable trajectories. The condition $α>1$ corresponds to cases where the linearized operator around $Q$ has no resonance and no internal mode. Recall that the case $α>2$ is treated in Krieger-Nakanishi-Schlag using Strichartz and other local dispersive estimates. Since these tools are not available for low power nonlinearities, our approach is based on virial type estimates and the particular structure of the linearized operator observed in Chang-Gustafson-Nakanishi-Tsai.
