On the dynamics of zero-speed solutions for Camassa-Holm type equations

In this paper we consider globally defined solutions of Camassa-Holm (CH) type equations outside the well-known nonzero speed, peakon region. These equations include the standard CH and Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equations, as well as nonintegrable generalizations such as the $b$-family, elastic rod and BBM equations. Having globally defined solutions for these models, we introduce the notion of \emph{zero-speed and breather solutions}, i.e., solutions that do not decay to zero as $t\to +\infty$ on compact intervals of space. We prove that, under suitable decay assumptions, such solutions do not exist because the identically zero solution is the global attractor of the dynamics, at least in a spatial interval of size $|x|\lesssim t^{1/2-}$ as $t\to+\infty$. As a consequence, we also show scattering and decay in CH type equations with long range nonlinearities. Our proof relies in the introduction of suitable Virial functionals à la Martel-Merle in the spirit of the works by one of us and Ponce, and Kowalczyk-Martel adapted to CH, DP and BBM type dynamics, one of them placed in $L^1_x$, and a second one in the energy space $H^1_x$. Both functionals combined lead to local in space decay to zero in $|x|\lesssim t^{1/2-}$ as $t\to+\infty$. Our methods do not rely on the integrable character of the equation, applying to other nonintegrable families of CH type equations as well.

On the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the Benjamin-Ono equation

We prove that the limit infimum, as time $\,t\,$ goes to infinity, of any uniformly bounded in time $H^1\cap L^1$ solution to the Benjamin-Ono equation converge to zero locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $\,t/\log t$. Also for a solution with a mild $L^1$-norm growth in time, its limit infimum must converge to zero, as time goes to infinity, locally in an increasing on time region of space of order depending of the rate of growth of its $L^1$-norm. In particular, we discard the existence of breathers and other solutions for the BO model moving with a speed \lq\lq slower" than a soliton.

Stability of KdV solitons on the half-line

In this paper we study the stability problem for KdV solitons on the left and right half-line. Unlike standard KdV, these are not exact solutions to the equations posed in the half-line. However, we are able to show that solitons placed initially far away from the origin are strongly stable for the problem posed on the right half-line, assuming homogeneous boundary conditions. For the problem posed on the left half-line, the positive infinitetime stability problem makes no sense for the case of KdV solitons, but in this setting we prove a result of stability for all negative times. The proof involves the use of almost conserved quantities adapted to the evolution of the KdV soliton on the particular case of the half-line. Adaptations to other boundary conditions or star graphs are also discussed.

Extended decay properties for generalized BBM equations

In this note we show that all small solutions of the BBM equation must decay to zero as $t\to +\infty$ in large portions of the physical space, extending previous known results, and only assuming data in the energy space. Our results also include decay on the left portion of the physical line, unlike the standard KdV dynamics.

The Calderón problem for quasilinear elliptic equations

In this paper we show uniqueness of the conductivity for the quasilinear Calderón's inverse problem. The nonlinear conductivity depends, in a nonlinear fashion, of the potential itself and its gradient. Under some structural assumptions on the direct problem, a real-valued conductivity allowing a small analytic continuation to the complex plane induces a unique Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map. The method of proof considers some complex-valued, linear test functions based on a point of the boundary of the domain, and a linearization of the DN map placed at these particular set of solutions.

Breathers and the dynamics of solutions to the KdV type equations

In this paper our first aim is to identify a large class of non-linear functions $\,f(\cdot)\,$ for which the IVP for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation does not have breathers or "small" breathers solutions. Also we prove that all small, uniformly in time $L^1\cap H^1$ bounded solutions to KdV and related perturbations must converge to zero, as time goes to infinity, locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $t^{1/2}$ around any compact set in space. This set is included in the linearly dominated dispersive region $x\ll t$. Moreover, we prove this result independently of the well-known supercritical character of KdV scattering. In particular, no standing breather-like nor solitary wave structures exists in this particular regime.

Dynamics of small solutions in KdV type equations: decay inside the linearly dominated region

In this paper we prove that all small, uniformly in time $L^1\cap H^1$ bounded solutions to KdV and related perturbations must converge to zero, as time goes to infinity, locally in an increasing-in-time region of space of order $t^{1/2}$ around any compact set in space. This set is included in the linearly dominated dispersive region $x\ll t$. Moreover, we prove this result independently of the well-known supercritical character of KdV scattering. In particular, no standing breather-like nor solitary wave structures exists in this particular regime. For the proof, we make use of well-chosen weighted virial identities. The main new idea employed here with respect to previous results is the fact that the $L^1$ integral is subcritical with respect to the KdV scaling.

Nonlinear stability of 2-solitons of the Sine-Gordon equation in the energy space

In this article we prove that 2-soliton solutions of the sine-Gordon equation (SG) are orbitally stable in the natural energy space of the problem. The solutions that we study are the {\it 2-kink, kink-antikink and breather} of SG. In order to prove this result, we will use Bäcklund transformations implemented by the Implicit Function Theorem. These transformations will allow us to reduce the stability of the three solutions to the case of the vacuum solution, in the spirit of previous results by Alejo and the first author, which was done for the case of the scalar modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. However, we will see that SG presents several difficulties because of its vector valued character. Our results improve those in Alejo et al., and give a first rigorous proof of the stability in the energy space of SG 2-solitons.

The scattering problem for the $abcd$ Boussinesq system in the energy space

The Boussinesq $abcd$ system is a 4-parameter set of equations posed in $\mathbb{R}_t \times \mathbb{R}_x$, originally derived by Bona, Chen and Saut as first order 2-wave approximations of the incompressible and irrotational, two dimensional water wave equations in the shallow water wave regime, in the spirit of the original Boussinesq derivation. Among many particular regimes, depending each of them in terms of the value of the parameters $(a,b,c,d)$ present in the equations, the "generic" regime is characterized by the setting $b,d>0$ and $a,c<0$. The system is hamiltonian if also $b=d$. The equations in this regime are globally well-posed in the energy space $H^1\times H^1$, provided one works with small solutions. In this paper, we investigate decay and the scattering problem in this regime, which is characterized as having (quadratic) long-range nonlinearities, very weak linear decay $O(t^{-1/3})$ because of the one dimensional setting, and existence of non scattering solutions (solitary waves). We prove, among other results, that for a sufficiently dispersive $abcd$ systems (characterized only in terms of parameters $a, b$ and $c$), all small solutions must decay to zero, locally strongly in the energy space, in proper subset of the light cone $|x|\leq |t|$. We prove this result by constructing three suitable virial functionals in the spirit of works by Kowalczyk, Martel and the second author, and more recently by the last three authors (valid for the simpler scalar "good Boussinesq" model), leading to global in time decay and control of all local $H^1\times H^1$ terms. No parity nor extra decay assumptions are needed to prove decay, only small solutions in the energy space.

Almost sharp nonlinear scattering in one-dimensional Born-Infeld equations arising in nonlinear Electrodynamics

We study decay of small solutions of the Born-Infeld equation in 1+1 dimensions, a quasilinear scalar field equation modeling nonlinear electromagnetism, as well as branes in String theory and minimal surfaces in Minkowski space-times. From the work of Whitham, it is well-known that there is no decay because of arbitrary solutions traveling to the speed of light just as linear wave equation. However, even if there is no global decay in 1+1 dimensions, we are able to show that all globally small $H^{s+1}\times H^s$, $s>\frac12$ solutions do decay to the zero background state in space, inside a strictly proper subset of the light cone. We prove this result by constructing a Virial identity related to a momentum law, in the spirit of works \cite{KMM,KMM1}, as well as a Lyapunov functional that controls the $\dot H^1 \times L^2$ energy.

Scattering in the energy space for Boussinesq equations

In this note we show that all small solutions in the energy space of the generalized 1D Boussinesq equation must decay to zero as time tends to infinity, strongly on slightly proper subsets of the space-time light cone. Our result does not require any assumption on the power of the nonlinearity, working even for the supercritical range of scattering. No parity assumption on the initial data is needed.

Instability in nonlinear Schrödinger breathers

We consider the \emph{focusing} nonlinear Schrödinger equation posed on the one dimensional line, with nonzero background condition at spatial infinity, given by a homogeneous plane wave. For this problem of physical interest, we study the initial value problem for perturbations of the background wave in Sobolev spaces. It is well-known that the associated linear dynamics for this problem describes a phenomenon known in the literature as \emph{modulational instability}, also recently related to the emergence of \emph{rogue waves} in ocean dynamics. In qualitative terms, small perturbations of the background state increase its size exponentially in time. In this paper we show that, even if there is no time decay for the linear dynamics due to the modulationally unstable regime, the equation is still locally well-posed in $H^s$, $s>\frac12$. We apply this result to give a rigorous proof of the unstable character of two well-known NLS solutions: the Peregrine and Kuznetsov-Ma breathers.

Nonexistence of small, odd breathers for a class of nonlinear wave equations

In this note, we show that for a large class of nonlinear wave equations with odd nonlinearities, any globally defined odd solution which is small in the energy space decays to $0$ in the local energy norm. In particular, this result shows nonexistence of small, odd breathers for some classical nonlinear Klein Gordon equations such as the sine Gordon equation and $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models. It also partially answers a question of Soffer and Weinstein in \cite[p. 19]{MR1681113} about nonexistence of breathers for the cubic NLKG in dimension one.

On the variational structure of breather solutions

In this paper we give a systematic and simple account that put in evidence that many breather solutions of integrable equations satisfy suitable variational elliptic equations, which also implies that the stability problem reduces in some sense to $(i)$ the study of the spectrum of explicit linear systems (\emph{spectral stability}), and $(ii)$ the understanding of how bad directions (if any) can be controlled using low regularity conservation laws. We exemplify this idea in the case of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), Gardner, and sine-Gordon (SG) equations. Then we perform numerical simulations that confirm, at the level of the spectral problem, our previous rigorous results, where we showed that mKdV breathers are $H^2$ and $H^1$ stable, respectively. In a second step, we also discuss the Gardner and the Sine-Gordon cases, where the spectral study of a fourth-order linear matrix system is the key element to show stability. Using numerical methods, we confirm that all spectral assumptions leading to the $H^2\times H^1$ stability of SG breathers are numerically satisfied, even in the ultra-relativistic, singular regime. In a second part, we study the periodic mKdV case, where a periodic breather is known from the work of Kevrekidis et al. We rigorously show that these breathers satisfy a suitable elliptic equation, and we also show numerical spectral stability. However, we also identify the source of nonlinear instability in the case described in Kevrekidis et al. Finally, we present a new class of breather solution for mKdV, believed to exist from geometric considerations, and which is periodic in time and space, but has nonzero mean, unlike standard breathers.

Dispersive estimates for rational symbols and local well-posedness of the nonzero energy NV equation. II

In this paper we continue our study on the Cauchy problem for the two-dimensional Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation, integrable via the inverse scattering transform for the two dimensional Schrödinger operator at a fixed energy parameter. This work is concerned with the case of positive energy. For the solution of the linearized equation we derive smoothing and Strichartz estimates by combining two different frequency regimes. At non-low frequencies we also derive improved smoothing estimates with gain of almost one derivative. We combine the linear estimates with the Fourier decomposition method and $ X^{s,b} $ spaces to obtain local well-posedness of NV at positive energy in $H^s$, $s>\frac12$. Our result implies, in particular, that {\it at least} for $s>\frac12$, NV does not change its behavior from semilinear to quasilinear as energy changes sign, in contrast to the closely related Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. As a supplement, we provide some new explicit solutions of NV at zero energy which exhibit an interesting behavior at large times.

Stability of integrable and nonintegrable structures

In this paper we give a comprehensive account of several recent results on the stability of nontrivial soliton structures for some well-known non periodic dispersive models. We will focus on the simpler case of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations, covering the classical stability results by Bona, Souganidis, Strauss until the results by Martel and Merle and our recent collaborations with Miguel Alejo and Luis Vega.

Asymptotic Stability of high-dimensional Zakharov-Kuznetsov solitons

We prove that solitons (or solitary waves) of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, a physically relevant high dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation appearing in Plasma Physics, and having mixed KdV and nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) dynamics, are strongly asymptotically stable in the energy space in the physical region. We also prove that the sum of well-arranged solitons is stable in the same space. Orbital stability of ZK solitons is well-known since the work of de Bouard. Our proofs follow the ideas by Martel and Martel and Merle, applied for generalized KdV equations in one dimension. In particular, we extend to the high dimensional case several monotonicity properties for suitable half-portions of mass and energy; we also prove a new Liouville type property that characterizes ZK solitons, and a key Virial identity for the linear and nonlinear part of the ZK dynamics, obtained independently of the mixed KdV-NLS dynamics. This last Virial identity relies on a simple sign condition, which is numerically tested for the two and three dimensional cases, with no additional spectral assumptions required. Possible extensions to higher dimensions and different nonlinearities could be obtained after a suitable local well-posedness theory in the energy space, and the verification of a corresponding sign condition.

Kink dynamics in the $ϕ^4$ model: asymptotic stability for odd perturbations in the energy space

We consider a classical equation known as the $ϕ^4$ model in one space dimension. The kink, defined by $H(x)=\tanh(x/{\sqrt{2}})$, is an explicit stationary solution of this model. From a result of Henry, Perez and Wreszinski it is known that the kink is orbitally stable with respect to small perturbations of the initial data in the energy space. In this paper we show asymptotic stability of the kink for odd perturbations in the energy space. The proof is based on Virial-type estimates partly inspired from previous works of Martel and Merle on asymptotic stability of solitons for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. However, this approach has to be adapted to additional difficulties, pointed out by Soffer and Weinstein in the case of general Klein-Gordon equations with potential: the interactions of the so-called internal oscillation mode with the radiation, and the different rates of decay of these two components of the solution in large time.
