Dispersive estimates for rational symbols and local well-posedness of the nonzero energy NV equation

We consider the Cauchy problem for the two-dimensional Novikov-Veselov equation integrable via the inverse scattering problem for the Schrödinger operator with fixed negative energy. The associated linear equation is characterized by a rational symbol which is not a polynomial, except when the energy parameter is zero. With the help of a complex analysis point of view of the problem, we establish uniform decay estimates for the linear solution with gain of almost one derivative, and we use this result together with Fourier decomposition methods and $X^{s,b}$ spaces to prove local well-posedness in $H^s$, $s>\frac12$.

Dynamics of complex-valued modified KdV solitons with applications to the stability of breathers

We study the long-time dynamics of complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) solitons, which are recognized because they blow-up in finite time. We establish stability properties at the H^1 level of regularity, uniformly away from each blow-up point. These new properties are used to prove that mKdV breathers are H^1 stable, improving our previous result, where we only proved H^2 stability. The main new ingredient of the proof is the use of a Bäcklund transformation which links the behavior of breathers, complex-valued solitons and small real-valued solutions of the mKdV equation. We also prove that negative energy breathers are asymptotically stable. Since we do not use any method relying on the Inverse Scattering Transformation, our proof works even under rough perturbations, provided a corresponding local well-posedness theory is available.

On approximate controllability of generalized KdV solitons

We consider the approximate control of solitons in generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. By introducing a suitable internal bilinear control on the equation, we prove that any soliton is locally null controllable, and moreover, any soliton can be accelerated to any particular positive velocity, after a suitable large amount of time. Precise estimates on the error terms and the rate of decay in the approximate null controllability result are also given. Our method introduces a new insight on the control of nonlinear objects, from the point of view of interaction and collision problems for nonlinear dispersive equations, recently developed by Y. Martel and F. Merle. It can be applied in principle, to several other models with soliton solutions.

Multi-solitons for nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations

In this paper we consider the existence of multi-soliton structures for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NLKG) in R^{1+d}. We prove that, independently of the unstable character of (NLKG) solitons, it is possible to construct a N-soliton family of solutions to (NLKG), of dimension 2N, globally well-defined in the energy space H^1 \times L^2 for all large positive times. The method of proof involves the generalization of previous works on supercritical NLS and gKdV equations by Martel, Merle and the first author to the wave case, where we replace the unstable mode associated to the linear NLKG operator by two generalized directions that are controlled without appealing to modulation theory. As a byproduct, we generalize the linear theory described in Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss and Duyckaerts-Merle to the case of boosted solitons, and provide new solutions to be studied using the recent Nakanishi- Schlag theory.

On the nonlinear stability of mKdV breathers

A mathematical proof for the stability of mKdV breathers is announced. This proof involves the existence of a nonlinear equation satisfied by all breather profiles, and a new Lyapunov functional which controls the dynamics of small perturbations and instability modes. In order to construct such a functional, we work in a subspace of the energy one. However, our proof introduces new ideas in order to attack the corresponding stability problem in the energy space. Some remarks about the sine-Gordon case are also considered.

Nonlinear stability of mKdV breathers

Breather solutions of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation are shown to be globally stable in a natural H^2 topology. Our proof introduces a new Lyapunov functional, at the H^2 level, which allows to describe the dynamics of small perturbations, including oscillations induced by the periodicity of the solution, as well as a direct control of the corresponding instability modes. In particular, degenerate directions are controlled using low-regularity conservation laws.

Sharp inelastic character of slowly varying NLS solitons

We consider soliton-like solutions of a variable coefficients, subcritical nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). In a previous result, we proved the existence of a pure, global-in-time, generalized soliton with prescribed asymptotic as t tends to -infinity. In addition, we described the corresponding dynamics for all time, up to a small error term. In this paper we prove that the soliton is never pure as t tends to infinity. Indeed, we give a precise sharp lower bound on the defect induced by the potential on the soliton. This result shows the existence of nontrivial dispersive effects acting on generalized solitons of slowly varying NLS equations.

The Gardner equation and the stability of multi-kink solutions of the mKdV equation

Multi-kink solutions of the defocusing, modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) found by Grosse are shown to be globally $H^1$-stable. Stability in the one-kink case was previously established by Zhidkov, and Merle-Vega. The proof uses transformations linking the mKdV equation with focusing, Gardner-like equations, where stability and asymptotic stability in the energy space are known. We generalize our results by considering the existence, uniqueness and the dynamics of generalized multi-kinks of defocusing, non-integrable gKdV equations, showing the inelastic character of the 4-kink collision in some regimes.

On the soliton dynamics under slowly varying medium for Nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We consider the problem of the soliton propagation, in a slowly varying medium, for a generalized, variable-coefficients nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of new soliton-like solutions for a large class of slowly varying media. Moreover, we describe for all time the behavior of this new generalized soliton solution.

Inelastic character of solitons of slowly varying gKdV equations

In this paper we describe the inelastic character of solitons of some slowly varying gKdV equations. We give precise lower bounds, in the energy space, of the defect induced by the potential on the solution as time goes to infinite. For the proof, we consider suitable Lyapunov functionals that propagate the defect along the dynamics in a non trivial fashion, in the spirit of the recent breakthroughs made by Martel and Merle in the case of the two soliton collision for non integrable gKdV equations. In addition, we also consider a special, degenerate case, where the defect is formally of second order.

The Gardner equation and the L^2-stability of the N-soliton solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation

Multi-soliton solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation (KdV) are shown to be globally L2-stable, and asymptotically stable in the sense of Martel-Merle. The proof is surprisingly simple and combines the Gardner transform, which links the Gardner and KdV equations, together with the Martel-Merle-Tsai and Martel-Merle recent results on stability and asymptotic stability in the energy space, applied this time to the Gardner equation. As a by-product, the results of Maddocks-Sachs and Merle-Vega are improved in several directions.

Dynamics of soliton-like solutions for slowly varying, generalized gKdV equations: refraction vs. reflection

In this work we continue the description of soliton-like solutions of some slowly varying, subcritical gKdV equations. In this opportunity we describe, almost completely, the allowed behaviors: either the soliton is refracted, or it is reflected by the potential, depending on its initial energy. This last result describes a new type of soliton-like solution for gKdV equations, also present in the NLS case. Moreover, we prove that the solution is not pure at infinity, unlike the standard gKdV soliton.

On the soliton dynamics under a slowly varying medium for generalized KdV equations

We consider the problem of the soliton propagation, in a slowly varying medium, for a generalized Korteweg - de Vries equations (gKdV). We study the effects of inhomogeneities on the dynamics of a standard soliton. We prove that slowly varying media induce on the soliton solution large dispersive effects at large time. Moreover, unlike gKdV equations, we prove that there is no pure-soliton solution in this regime.

On the inelastic 2-soliton collision for gKdV equations with general nonlinearity

We study the problem of 2-soliton collision for the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations, completing some recent works of Y. Martel and F. Merle. We classify the nonlinearities for which collisions are elastic or inelastic. Our main result states that in the case of small solitons, with one soliton smaller than the other one, the unique nonlinearities allowing a perfectly elastic collision are precisely the integrable cases, namely the quadratic (KdV), cubic (mKdV) and Gardner nonlinearities.

Singular limits for the bi-laplacian operator with exponential nonlinearity in $\R^4$

Let $Ω$ be a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ such that for some integer $d\geq1$ its $d$-th singular cohomology group with coefficients in some field is not zero, then problem {Δ^{2}u-ρ^{4}k(x)e^{u}=0 & \hbox{in}Ω, u=Δu=0 & \hbox{on}\partialΩ, has a solution blowing-up, as $ρ\to0$, at $m$ points of $Ω$, for any given number $m$.

The two-dimensional Lazer-McKenna conjecture for an exponential nonlinearity

We consider the problem of Ambrosetti-Prodi type \begin{equation}\label{0}\quad\begin{cases} Δu + e^u = sϕ_1 + h(x) &\hbox{in} Ω, u=0 & \hbox{on} \partial Ω, \end{cases} \nonumber \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a bounded, smooth domain in $\R^2$, $ϕ_1$ is a positive first eigenfunction of the Laplacian under Dirichlet boundary conditions and $h\in\mathcal{C}^{0,α}(\barΩ)$. We prove that given $k\ge 1$ this problem has at least $k$ solutions for all sufficiently large $s>0$, which answers affirmatively a conjecture by Lazer and McKenna \cite{LM1} for this case. The solutions found exhibit multiple concentration behavior around maxima of $ϕ_1$ as $s\to +\infty$.
