Tides and energy conditions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet thin-shell wormholes

In this article we study spherical thin-shell wormholes in five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We show that configurations supported by non-exotic matter, that is matter satisfying the weak energy condition, are possible at the same time that traversability problems associated with strong radial tides at the throat can be avoided when suitable values of the parameters are adopted. Our construction is performed in such a way that it also allows for the admissible behaviour of the geometry in the whole spacetime.

Tides and traversability in gravastars and other related geometries

Tidal effects related to the traversability across thin shells are examined in spherically symmetric geometries. We focus mainly on shells separating inner from outer regions of gravastars (de Sitter -- i.e. $Λ>0$ -- interior and Schwarzschild exterior of mass parameter $M$), but we also examine other related geometries by including the possibility of a negative cosmological constant and, besides, non trivial topologies where the shell separates two outer regions. The analysis is developed for radially traversing objects and for tides in both radial and transverse directions, which present difficulties of somewhat different nature. Transverse tides across shells which satisfy the flare-out condition are the most troublesome, while shells in trivial topologies, i.e. geometries with one asymptotic region, are more indulgent with the issue of large tides. Besides, contradicting other cases analyzed in previous works, we find that large radial tides cannot be avoided when traveling across the shell in the gravastar solution, but in non-trivial topologies they can. We study with special attention the traversability in practice of the transition layer in the thin-shell gravastar solution. In particular, a finite object which traverses radially the shell in a gravastar with $\sqrtΛ\ll 1/M$ undergoes a compression effect in both the transverse and the radial directions due to the tides associated to the thin layer. The results are interpreted in terms of the total momentum transfer obtained by integrating the travel time of the object.

Wormholes in Einstein-Born-Infeld theory

Spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes are studied within the framework of Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. We analyze the exotic matter content and find that for certain values of the Born-Infeld parameter the amount of exotic matter on the shell can be reduced in relation to the Maxwell case. We also examine the mechanical stability of the wormhole configurations under radial perturbations preserving the spherical symmetry.

Higher curvature wormholes

In general relativity, traversable wormholes are possible provided they do not represent shortcuts in the spacetime. Einstein equations, together with the achronal averaged null energy condition, demand to take longer for an observer to go through the wormhole than through the ambient space. This forbids wormholes connecting two distant regions in the space. The situation is different when higher-curvature corrections are considered. Here, we construct a traversable wormhole solution connecting two asymptotically flat regions, otherwise disconnected. This geometry is an electro-vacuum solution to Lovelock theory of gravity coupled to an Abelian gauge field. The electric flux suffices to support the wormhole throat and to stabilize the solution. In fact, we show that, in contrast to other wormhole solutions previously found in this theory, the one constructed here turns out to be stable under scalar perturbations. We also consider wormholes in AdS. We present a protection argument showing that, while stable traversable wormholes connecting two asymptotically locally AdS$_5$ spaces do exist in the higher-curvature theory, the region of the parameter space where such solutions are admitted lies outside the causality bounds coming from AdS/CFT.

Thin shells associated to black string spacetimes

In this article, we study thin shells of matter connecting charged black string geometries with different values of the corresponding parameters. We analyze the matter content and the mechanical stability of the shells undergoing perturbations that preserve the cylindrical symmetry. Two different global configurations are considered: an interior geometry connected to an exterior one at the surface where the shell is placed, and two exterior geometries connected by a wormhole throat located at the shell position.

Self-force on an arbitrarily coupled scalar charge in cylindrical thin-shell spacetimes

We consider the arbitrarily coupled field and self-force of a static massless scalar charge in cylindrical spacetimes with one or two asymptotic regions, with the only matter content concentrated in a thin-shell characterized by the trace of the extrinsic curvature jump $κ$. The self-force is studied numerically and analytically in terms of the curvature coupling $ξ$. We found the critical values $ξ_c^{(n)} = n/ ( ρ(r_s)\,κ)$, with $n \in \mathbb{N}$ and $ρ(r_s)$ the metric's profile function at the position of the shell, for which the scalar field is divergent in the background configuration. The pathological behavior is removed by restricting the coupling to a domain of stability. The coupling has a significant influence over the self-force at the vicinities of the shell, and we identified $ξ=1/4$ as the value for which the scalar force changes sign at a neighborhood of $r_s$; if $κ(1-4ξ)>0$ the shell acts repulsively as an effective potential barrier, while if $κ(1-4ξ)<0$ it attracts the charge as a potential well. The sign of the asymptotic self-force only depends on whether there is an angle deficit or not on the external region where the charge is placed; conical asymptotics produce a leading attractive force, while Minkowski regions produce a repulsive asymptotic self-force.

Perturbative dynamics of thin-shell wormholes beyond general relativity: an alternative approach

Recent studies relating the approximations for the equations of state for thin shells and their consequent perturbative evolution are extended to thin-shell wormholes in theories beyond general relativity and more than four spacetime dimensions. The assumption of equations of state of the same form for static and slowly evolving shells appears as a strong restriction excluding the possibility of oscillatory evolutions. Then the new results considerably differ from previous ones obtained within the usual linearized approach.

Thin shells joining local cosmic string geometries

In this article we present a theoretical construction of spacetimes with a thin shell that joins two different local cosmic string geometries. We study two types of global manifolds, one representing spacetimes with a thin shell surrounding a cosmic string or an empty region with Minkowski metric, and the other corresponding to wormholes which are not symmetric across the throat located at the shell. We analyze the stability of the static configurations under perturbations preserving the cylindrical symmetry. For both types of geometries we find that the static configurations can be stable for suitable values of the parameters.

Brans-Dicke cylindrical wormholes

Static axisymmetric thin-shell wormholes are constructed within the framework of the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor theory of gravity. Examples of wormholes associated with vacuum and electromagnetic fields are studied. All constructions must be threaded by exotic matter, except in the case of geometries with a singularity of finite radius, associated with an electric field, which can have a throat supported by ordinary matter. These results are achieved with any of the two definitions of the flare-out condition considered.

Asymptotically anti-de Sitter cylindrical thin-shell wormholes

In this article we investigate cylindrical thin-shell wormholes which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter. We analyze their stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry by using two different methods. We compare the results with those corresponding to the wormholes constructed from the Levi-Civita spacetime. We find that the configurations always require the presence of exotic matter at the throat, and, in the case of the linearized stability analysis, they can be stable for suitable values of the parameters

General formalism for the stability of thin-shell wormholes in 2+1 dimensions

In this article we theoretically construct circular thin-shell wormholes in a 2+1 dimensional spacetime. The construction is symmetric with respect to the throat. We present a general formalism for the study of the mechanical stability under perturbations preserving the circular symmetry of the configurations, adopting a linearized equation of state for the exotic matter at the throat. We apply the formalism to several examples.

Some general aspects of thin-shell wormholes with cylindrical symmetry

In this article we study a general class of non-rotating thin-shell wormholes with cylindrical symmetry. We consider two physically sound definitions of the flare-out condition and we show that the less restrictive one allows for the construction of wormholes with positive energy density at the throat. We also analyze the mechanical stability of these objects under perturbations preserving the symmetry, proving that previous results are particular cases of a general property. We present examples of wormholes corresponding to Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes.

Variation of the fine-structure constant: an update of statistical analyses with recent data

We analyze the consistency of different astronomical data of the variation in the fine-structure constant obtained with KECK and VLT. We tested the consistency using the Student test and confidence intervals. We splited the data sets in to smaller intervals and grouped them acording to redshift and angular position. Another statistical analysis is proposed that considers phenomenological models for the variation in α. Results show consistency for the reduced intervals for each pair of data sets and suggests that the variation in αis significant at higher redshifts. Even though the dipole model seems to be the most accurate phenomenological model, the statistical analyses indicate that the variation in αmight be depending on both redshift and angular position.

Charged shells in a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime

We study circular shells in a (2+1)-dimensional background within the framework of Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. For shells around black holes we analyze the mechanical stability under perturbations preserving the symmetry. Shells around vacuum are also discussed. We find a large range in the values of the parameters compatible with stable configurations.

Aspects of spherical shells in a D-dimensional background

In this work, shells are mathematically constructed by applying the cut and paste procedure to D-dimensional spherically symmetric geometries. The weak energy condition for the matter on the shells is briefly analyzed. The dynamical evolution is studied, and the general formalism for the stability of static solutions is presented. Several examples corresponding to different spacetime dimensions and values of the parameters are considered.

Addendum to "Thin-shell wormholes supported by ordinary matter in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity"

Thin-shell wormholes are constructed starting from the exotic branch of Wiltshire spherically symmetric solution of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The energy-momentum tensor of the shell is studied, and it is shown that configurations supported by matter satisfying the energy conditions exist for certain values of the parameters. Differing from the previous result associated to the normal branch of Wiltshire solution, this is achieved for small positive values of the Gauss-Bonnet parameter and for vanishing charge.

Cylindrical thin-shell wormholes and energy conditions

We prove the impossibility of cylindrical thin-shell wormholes supported by matter satisfying the energy conditions everywhere, under reasonable assumptions about the asymptotic behaviour of the - in general different - metrics at each side of the throat. In particular, we reproduce for singular sources previous results corresponding to flat and conical asymptotics, and extend them to a more general asymptotic behaviour. Besides, we establish necessary conditions for the possibility of non exotic cylindrical thin-shell wormholes.
