Thin shells in Einstein-Born-Infeld theory

The characterization and mechanical stability of charged thin shells with spherical symmetry are analyzed in the context of Einstein-Born-Infeld theory. The study of stability is performed by considering linearized perturbations preserving the symmetry of the static configurations. It is found that as the charge increases, the shells can be stable for a wider range of the parameters.

Stability of charged thin shells

In this article we study the mechanical stability of spherically symmetric thin shells with charge, in Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Born-Infeld theories. We analyze linearized perturbations preserving the symmetry, for shells around vacuum and shells surrounding non charged black holes.

Some aspects of cylindrical solutions in Brans-Dicke gravity

Several points regarding cylindrical Brans-Dicke geometries are studied. The issue of particle trajectories for the vacuum cylindrical solution is revisited. The possible particular nature of a global string metric is analysed. The general form of the junction conditions for matching cylindrical solutions within this theory is written down, and the relation with the general relativity limit is discussed.

More about thin-shell wormholes associated to cosmic strings

Previous analysis about thin-shell wormholes associated to cosmic strings are extended. More evidence is found supporting the conjecture that, under reasonable assumptions about the equations of state of matter on the shell, the configurations are not stable under radial velocity perturbations.

Thin-shell wormholes in Brans-Dicke gravity

Spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes are constructed within the framework of Brans-Dicke gravity. It is shown that, for appropriate values of the Brans-Dicke constant, these wormholes can be supported by matter satisfying the energy conditions.

The time variation of the fine structure constant: A statistical analysis of astronomical data

We analyze different data of the variation of the fine structure constant obtained with different methods to check their consistency. We test consistency using the modified Student test and confidence intervals. We split the data sets in smaller intervals. A criterion for this selection is proposed. Results show consistency for reduced intervals for each pair of data sets considered. Results are at variance with the ones obtained considering mean values over the whole interval.

Thin-shell wormholes supported by ordinary matter in Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet gravity

The generalized Darmois--Israel formalism for Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet theory is applied to construct thin-shell Lorentzian wormholes with spherical symmetry. We calculate the energy localized on the shell, and we find that for certain values of the parameters wormholes could be supported by matter not violating the energy conditions.

Traversable wormholes in a string cloud

We study spherically symmetric thin-shell wormholes in a string cloud background in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. The amount of exotic matter required for the construction, the traversability and the stability under radial perturbations, are analyzed as functions of the parameters of the model. Besides, in the Appendices a non perturbative approach to the dynamics and a possible extension of the analysis to a related model are briefly discussed.

Stability of Chaplygin gas thin-shell wormholes

In this paper we construct spherical thin-shell wormholes supported by a Chaplygin gas. For a rather general class of geometries we introduce a new approach for the stability analysis of static solutions under perturbations preserving the symmetry. We apply this to wormholes constructed from Schwarzschild, Schwarzschild-de Sitter, Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter and Reissner-Nordstrom metrics. In the last two cases, we find that there are values of the parameters for which stable static solutions exist.

Thin-shell wormholes associated with global cosmic strings

In this article we construct cylindrical thin-shell wormholes in the context of global cosmic strings. We study the stability of static configurations under perturbations preserving the symmetry and we find that the throat tends to collapse or expand, depending only on the direction of the velocity perturbation.

Thin-shell wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term

We study five dimensional thin-shell wormholes in Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Gauss-Bonnet term. The linearized stability under radial perturbations and the amount of exotic matter are analyzed as a function of the parameters of the model. We find that the inclusion of the quadratic correction substantially widens the range of possible stable configurations, and besides it allows for a reduction of the exotic matter required to construct the wormholes.

Notes on Dilaton Quantum Cosmology

In these notes we address the canonical quantization of the cosmological models which appear as solutions of the low energy effective action of closed bosonic string theory (dilaton models). The analysis is restricted to the quantization of the minisuperspace models given by homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions. We study the different conceptual and technical problems arising in the Hamiltonian formulation of these models as a consequence of the presence of the so called Hamiltonian constraint. In particular we address the problem of time in quantum cosmology, the characterization of the symmetry under clock reversls arising from the existence of a Hamiltonian constraint, and the problem of inposing boundary conditions on the space of solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation.

Thin-shell wormholes in dilaton gravity

In this work we construct charged thin-shell Lorentzian wormholes in dilaton gravity. The exotic matter required for the construction is localized in the shell and the energy conditions are satisfied outside the shell. The total amount of exotic matter is calculated and its dependence with the parameters of the model is analysed.

Liouville theory and logarithmic solutions to Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation

We study a class of solutions to the SL(2,R)_k Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. First, logarithmic solutions which represent four-point correlation functions describing string scattering processes on three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space are discussed. These solutions satisfy the factorization ansatz and include logarithmic dependence on the SL(2,R)-isospin variables. Different types of logarithmic singularities arising are classified and the interpretation of these is discussed. The logarithms found here fit into the usual pattern of the structure of four-point function of other examples of AdS/CFT correspondence. Composite states arising in the intermediate channels can be identified as the phenomena responsible for the appearance of such singularities in the four-point correlation functions. In addition, logarithmic solutions which are related to non perturbative (finite k) effects are found. By means of the relation existing between four-point functions in Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model formulated on SL(2,R) and certain five-point functions in Liouville quantum conformal field theory, we show how the reflection symmetry of Liouville theory induces particular Z_2 symmetry transformations on the WZNW correlators. This observation allows to find relations between different logarithmic solutions. This Liouville description also provides a natural explanation for the appearance of the logarithmic singularities in terms of the operator product expansion between degenerate and puncture fields.

Cylindrical thin-shell wormholes

A general formalism for the dynamics of non rotating cylindrical thin-shell wormholes is developed. The time evolution of the throat is explicitly obtained for thin-shell wormholes whose metric has the form associated to local cosmic strings. It is found that the throat collapses to zero radius, remains static or expands forever, depending only on the sign of its initial velocity.

Wiggly Strings in Linearized Brans-Dicke Gravity

The metric around a wiggly cosmic string is calculated in the linear approximation of Brans-Dicke theory of gravitation. The equations of motion for relativistic and non-relativistic particles in this metric are obtained. Light propagation is also studied and it is shown that photon trajectories can be bounded.
