Magnetic vortex crystals in frustrated Mott insulator

Quantum fluctuations become particularly relevant in highly frustrated quantum magnets and can lead to new states of matter. We provide a simple and robust scenario for inducing magnetic vortex crystals in frustrated Mott insulators. By considering a quantum paramagnet that has a gapped spectrum with six-fold degenerate low energy modes, we study the magnetic field induced condensation of these modes. We use a dilute gas approximation to demonstrate that a plethora of multi-$\mathbf{Q}$ condensates are stabilized for different combinations of exchange interactions. This rich quantum phase diagram includes magnetic vortex crystals, which are further stabilized by symmetric exchange anisotropies. Because magnetic skyrmion and domain wall crystals have already been predicted and experimentally observed, this novel vortex phase completes the picture of emergent crystals of topologically nontrivial spin configurations.

Internal modes of a skyrmion in the ferromagnetic background in chiral magnets

A spin texture called skyrmion has been recently observed in certain chiral magnets without inversion symmetry. The observed skyrmions are extended objects with typical linear sizes of 10 nm to 100 nm that contain $10^3$ to $10^5$ spins and can be deformed in response to external perturbations. Weak deformations are characterized by the internal modes which are localized around the skyrmion center. Knowledge of internal modes is crucial to assess the stability and rigidity of these topological textures. Here we compute the internal modes of a skyrmion in the ferromagnetic background state by numerical diagonalization of the dynamical matrix. We find several internal modes below the magnon continuum, such as the mode corresponding to the translational motion, and different kinds of breathing modes. The number of internal modes is larger for lower magnetic fields. Indeed, several modes become gapless in the low field region indicating that the single skyrmion solution becomes unstable, although a skyrmion lattice is thermodynamically stable. On the other hand, at high fields only three internal modes exist and the skyrmion is stable even at higher fields when the ferromagnetic state is thermodynamically stable. We also show that the presence of out-of-plane easy-axis anisotropy stabilizes the single skyrmion solution. Finally, we discuss the effects of damping and possible experimental observations of these internal modes.

Dynamics of skyrmions in chiral magnets: dynamic phase transitions and equation of motion

We study the dynamics of skyrmions in a metallic chiral magnet. First we show that skyrmions can be created dynamically by destabilizing the ferromagnetic background state through a spin polarized current. We then treat skyrmions as rigid particles and derive the corresponding equation of motion. The dynamics of skyrmions is dominated by the Magnus force, which accounts for the weak pinning of skyrmions observed in experiments. Finally we discuss the quantum motion of skyrmions.

Orbital Magnetism Induced by Heat Currents in Mott insulators

We derive the effective heat current density operator for the strong-coupling regime of Mott insulators. Similarly to the case of the electric current density, the leading contribution to this effective operator is proportional to the local scalar spin chirality $\hatχ_{jkl}= \mathbf{S}_l\cdot\left(\mathbf{S}_j\times \mathbf{S}_k\right)$. This common form of the effective heat and electric current density operators leads to a novel cross response in Mott insulators. A heat current induces a distribution of orbital magnetic moments in systems containing loops of an odd number of hopping terms. The relative orientation of the orbital moments depends on the particular lattice of magnetic ions. This subtle effect arises from the symmetries that the heat and electric currents have in common.

Efimov effect in quantum magnets

Physics is said to be universal when it emerges regardless of the underlying microscopic details. A prominent example is the Efimov effect, which predicts the emergence of an infinite tower of three-body bound states obeying discrete scale invariance when the particles interact resonantly. Because of its universality and peculiarity, the Efimov effect has been the subject of extensive research in chemical, atomic, nuclear and particle physics for decades. Here we employ an anisotropic Heisenberg model to show that collective excitations in quantum magnets (magnons) also exhibit the Efimov effect. We locate anisotropy-induced two-magnon resonances, compute binding energies of three magnons and find that they fit into the universal scaling law. We propose several approaches to experimentally realize the Efimov effect in quantum magnets, where the emergent Efimov states of magnons can be observed with commonly used spectroscopic measurements. Our study thus opens up new avenues for universal few-body physics in condensed matter systems.

Generalized spin-wave theory: application to the bilinear-biquadratic model

We present a generalized spin-wave theory (GSWT) for treating spin Hamiltonians of arbitrary spin $S$. The generalization consists of an extension of the traditional spin-wave theory from SU(2) to SU($N$). Low energy excitations are waves of the local order parameter that fluctuates in the SU($N$) space of unitary transformations of the local spin states, instead of the SU(2) space of local spin rotations. Since the generators of the SU($N$) group can be represented as bilinear forms in $N$-flavored bosons, the low-energy modes of the GSWT are described with $N-1$ different bosons. The generalization allows treating quantum spin systems whose ground state exhibit multipolar ordering as well as detecting instabilities of magnetically ordered states (dipolar ordering) towards higher multipolar orderings. We illustrate these advantages by applying the GSWT to a bilinear-biquadratic model of arbitrary spin $S$ on hypercubic lattices.

Particle model for skyrmions in metallic chiral magnets: dynamics, pinning and creep

Recently spin textures called skyrmions have been discovered in certain chiral magnetic materials without spatial inversion symmetry, and have attracted enormous attention due to their promising application in spintronics since only a low applied current is necessary to drive their motion. When a conduction electron moves around the skyrmion, its spin is fully polarized by the spin texture and acquires a quantized phase; thus, the skyrmion yields an emergent electrodynamics that in turn determines skyrmion motion and gives rise to a finite Hall angle. While Skyrmions behave as particles, no particle level description of their dynamics exists to date. Such a model would have tremendous impact on understanding skyrmion dynamics by theoretical analysis and computational modeling. Here we derive the equation of motion from a microscopic continuum model and obtain the short-range interaction between skyrmions, and the interaction between skyrmions and defects. Skyrmions also experience a Magnus force perpendicular to their velocity due to the underlying emergent electromagnetic field. We validate the equation of motion by studying the depinning transition using both the particle and the continuum models. By using the particle description, we explain the recent experimental observations of the rotation of a skyrmion lattice in the presence of a temperature gradient. We also predict quantum and thermal creep motion of skyrmions in the pinning potential.

Driven skyrmions and dynamical transitions in chiral magnets

We study the dynamics of skyrmions in chiral magnets in the presence of a spin polarized current. The motion of skyrmions in the ferromagnetic background excites spin waves and contributes to additional damping. At a large current, the spin wave spectrum becomes gapless and skyrmions are created dynamically from the ferromagnetic state. At an even higher current, these skyrmions are strongly deformed due to the damping and become unstable at a threshold current, leading to a chiral liquid. We show how skyrmions can be created by increasing the current in the magnetic spiral state. We then construct a dynamic phase diagram for a chiral magnet with a current. The instability transitions between different states can be observed as experimentally clear signatures in the transport measurements, such as jumps and hysteresis.

An exact real-space renormalization method and applications

We present a numerical method based on real-space renormalization that outputs the exact ground space of "frustration-free" Hamiltonians. The complexity of our method is polynomial in the degeneracy of the ground spaces of the Hamiltonians involved in the renormalization steps. We apply the method to obtain the full ground spaces of two spin systems. The first system is a spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with four-spin cyclic-exchange interactions defined on a square lattice. In this case, we study finite lattices of up to 160 spins and find a triplet ground state that differs from the singlet ground states obtained in C.D. Batista and S. Trugman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 217202 (2004). We characterize such a triplet state as consisting of a triplon that propagates in a background of fluctuating singlet dimers. The second system is a family of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with uniaxial exchange anisotropy and next-nearest neighbor interactions. In this case, the method finds a ground-space degeneracy that scales quadratically with the system size and outputs the full ground space efficiently. Our method can substantially outperform methods based on exact diagonalization and is more efficient than other renormalization methods when the ground-space degeneracy is large.

Phase Diagram and Magnetic Excitations of Anisotropic Spin-One Magnets

We use a generalized spin wave approach and large scale quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations to study the quantum phase diagram and quasiparticle excitations of the S=1 Heisenberg model with an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy in dimensions d=2 and 3. We consider two alternative approximations for describing the quantum paramagnetic state: the standard Holstein-Primakoff approximation and a modified treatment in which the local constraint (finite dimension of the local Hilbert space) is enforced by introducing a Lagrange multiplier. While both approximations produce qualitatively similar results, the latter approach is the only one that is in good quantitative agreement with the quantum phase diagram and the quasiparticle dispersions obtained with QMC. This result is very important for low-temperature studies of quantum paramagnets in magnetic fields because it shows that a simple modification of the standard analytical approach should produce much better quantitative agreement between theory and experiment.

Magnetic and nematic orderings in spin-1 antiferromagnets with single-ion anisotropy

We study a spin-one Heisenberg model with exchange interaction, J, uniaxial single-ion exchange anisotropy, D, and Zeeman coupling to a magnetic field, B, parallel to the symmetry axis. We com- pute the (D/J,B/J) quantum phase diagram for square and simple cubic lattices by combining an- alytical and Quantum Monte Carlo approaches, and find a transition between XY-antiferromagnetic and ferronematic phases that spontaneously break the U(1) symmetry of the model. In the language of bosonic gases, this is a transition between a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of single bosons and a BEC of pairs. Our work opens up new avenues for measuring this transition in real magnets.

Vortex Dynamics in Ferromagnetic Superconductors: Vortex Clusters, Domain Walls and Enhanced Viscosity

We demonstrate that there is a long-range vortex-vortex attraction in ferromagnetic superconductors due to polarization of the magnetic moments. Vortex clusters are then stabilized in the ground state for low vortex densities. The motion of vortex clusters driven by the Lorentz force excites magnons. This regime becomes unstable at a threshold velocity above which domain walls are generated for slow relaxation of the magnetic moments and the vortex configuration becomes modulated. This dynamics of vortices and magnetic moments can be probed by transport measurements.

Condensation of Anyons in Frustrated Quantum Magnets

We derive the exact ground space of a family of spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with uniaxial exchange anisotropy (XXZ) and interactions between nearest and next-nearest-neighbor spins. The Hamiltonian family, H(Q), is parametrized by a single variable Q. By using a generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation that maps spins into anyons, we show that the exact ground states of H(Q) correspond to a condensation of anyons with statistical phase phi=-4Q. We also provide matrix-product state representations of some ground states that allow for the efficient computation of spin-spin correlation functions.

Low temperature thermodynamic properties near the field-induced quantum critical point in DTN

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the thermodynamic properties: specific heat, magnetization and thermal expansion in the vicinity of the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) around the lower critical field $H_{c1} \approx 2$\,T in DTN . A $T^{3/2}$ behavior in the specific heat and magnetization is observed at very low temperatures at $H=H_{c1}$ that is consistent with the universality class of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons. The temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient at $H_{c1}$ shows minor deviations from the expected $T^{1/2}$ behavior. Our experimental study is complemented by analytical calculations and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which reproduce nicely the measured quantities. We analyze the thermal and the magnetic Grüneisen parameters that are ideal quantities to identify QCPs. Both parameters diverge at $H_{c1}$ with the expected $T^{-1}$ power law. By using the Ehrenfest relations at the second order phase transition, we are able to estimate the pressure dependencies of the characteristic temperature and field scales.

Magnetostriction and magnetic texture to 97.4 Tesla in frustrated SrCu2(BO3)2

Strong geometrical frustration in magnets leads to exotic states, such as spin liquids, spin supersolids and complex magnetic textures. SrCu2(BO3)2, a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in the archetypical Shastry-Sutherland lattice, exhibits a rich spectrum of magnetization plateaus and stripe-like magnetic textures in applied fields. The structure of these plateaus is still highly controversial due to the intrinsic complexity associated with frustration and competing length scales. We reveal new magnetic textures in SrCu2(BO3)2 via magnetostriction and magnetocaloric measurements in fields up to 97.4 Tesla. In addition to observing the low-field fine structure of the plateaus with unprecedented resolution, the data also reveal lattice responses at 82 T and at 73.6 T which we attribute, using a controlled density matrix renormalization group approach, to the long-predicted 1/2-saturation plateau, and to a new 2/5 plateau.

Spin superstructure and noncoplanar ordering in metallic pyrochlore magnets with degenerate orbitals

We study double-exchange models with itinerant t2g electrons in spinel and pyrochlore crystals. In both cases the localized spins form a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. We show that the strong directional dependence of t2g orbitals leads to unusual Fermi surfaces that induce spin superstructures and noncoplanar orderings for a weak coupling between itinerant electrons and localized spins. Implications of our results to ZnV2O4 and Cd2Os2O7 are also discussed.

Finite-Temperature Transition in the Spin-Dimer Antiferromagnet BaCuSi2O6

We consider a classical XY-like Hamiltonian on a body-centered tetragonal lattice, focusing on the role of interlayer frustration. A three-dimensional (3D) ordered phase is realized via thermal fluctuations, breaking the mirror-image reflection symmetry in addition to the XY symmetry. A heuristic field-theoretical model of the transition has a decoupled fixed point in the 3D XY universality, and our Monte Carlo simulation suggests that there is such a temperature region where long-wavelength fluctuations can be described by this fixed point. However, it is shown using scaling arguments that the decoupled fixed point is unstable against a fluctuation-induced biquadratic interaction, indicating that a crossover to nontrivial critical phenomena with different exponents appears as one approaches the critical point beyond the transient temperature region. This new scenario clearly contradicts the previous notion of the 3D XY universality.

Spin Supersolid in Anisotropic Spin-One Heisenberg Chain

We consider an S=1 Heisenberg chain with strong exchange (Delta) and single--ion uniaxial anisotropy (D) in a magnetic field (B) along the symmetry axis. The low energy spectrum is described by an effective S=1/2 XXZ model that acts on two different low energy sectors for a given window of fields. The vacuum of each sector exhibits Ising-like antiferromagnetic ordering that coexists with the finite spin stiffness obtained from the exact solution of the effective XXZ model. In this way, we demonstrate the existence of a spin supersolid phase. We also compute the full Delta-B quantum phase diagram by means of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation.
