A Quantum Approach to Classical Statistical Mechanics

We present a new approach to study the thermodynamic properties of $d$-dimensional classical systems by reducing the problem to the computation of ground state properties of a $d$-dimensional quantum model. This classical-to-quantum mapping allows us to deal with standard optimization methods, such as simulated and quantum annealing, on an equal basis. Consequently, we extend the quantum annealing method to simulate classical systems at finite temperatures. Using the adiabatic theorem of quantum mechanics, we derive the rates to assure convergence to the optimal thermodynamic state. For simulated and quantum annealing, we obtain the asymptotic rates of $T(t) \approx (p N) /(k_B \log t)$ and $γ(t) \approx (Nt)^{-\bar{c}/N}$, for the temperature and magnetic field, respectively. Other annealing strategies, as well as their potential speed-up, are also discussed.

Intermediate Symmetries In Electronic Systems: Dimensional Reduction, Order Out Of Disorder, Dualities, And Fractionalization

We discuss symmetries intermediate between global and local and formalize the notion of dimensional reduction adduced from such symmetries. We apply this generalization to several systems including liquid crystalline phases of Quantum Hall systems, transition metal orbital systems, frustrated spin systems, (p+ip) superconducting arrays, and sliding Luttinger liquids. By considering space-time reflection symmetries, we illustrate that several of these systems are dual to each other. In some systems exhibiting these symmetries, low temperature local orders emerge by an "order out of disorder" effect while in other systems, the dimensional reduction precludes standard orders yet allows for multiparticle orders (including those of a topological nature).

Generalized Elitzur's Theorem and Dimensional Reduction

We extend Elitzur's theorem to systems with symmetries intermediate between global and local. In general, our theorem formalizes the idea of {\it dimensional reduction}. We apply the results of this generalization to many systems that are of current interest. These include liquid crystalline phases of Quantum Hall systems, orbital systems, geometrically frustrated spin lattices, Bose metals, and models of superconducting arrays.

Hierarchical Mean-Field Theories

We present a systematic and reliable methodology, termed hierarchical mean-field theory (HMFT), to study and predict the behavior of strongly coupled many-particle systems. HMFT is a simple approximation, based upon group theoretical grounds, which deals with competing orders on an equal footing. It is distinctly suitable when the various phases displayed by a system are the result of competing interactions and non-linear couplings of their constituents matter fields. We show applications relevant for systems implemented in optical lattices.
