Symmetric and asymmetric thick brane structures

This work deals with the presence of thick branes in a model with two source scalar fields that interact with one another in a very specific way. The model is new, capable of generating kinklike configurations that engender important modifications in the energy density of the system, inducing the presence of symmetric and asymmetric structures inside the brane.

Long range vortex configurations in generalized models with the Maxwell or Chern-Simons dynamics

In this work we deal with vortices in Maxwell-Higgs or Chern-Simons-Higgs models that engender long range tails. We find first order differential equations that support minimum energy solutions which solve the equations of motion. In the Maxwell scenario, we work with generalised magnetic permeabilities that lead to vortices described by solutions, magnetic field and energy density with power-law tails that extend farther than the standard exponential ones. We also find a manner to obtain a Chern-Simons model with the same scalar and magnetic field profiles of the Maxwell case. By doing so, we also find vortices with the aforementioned long range feature, which is also present in the electric field in the Chern-Simons model. The present results may motivate investigations on nonrelativistic models, in particular in the case involving Rydberg atoms, which are known to present long range interactions and relatively long lifetimes.

Simple quantum graphs proposal for quantum devices

The control of the quantum transport is an issue of current interest for the construction of new devices. In this work, we investigate this possibility in the realm of quantum graphs. The study allows the identification of two distinct periodic quantum effects which are related to quantum complexity, one being the identification of transport inefficiency, and the other the presence of peaks of full transmission inside regions of suppression of transport in some elementary arrangements of graphs. Motivated by the power of quantum graphs, we elaborate on the construction of simple devices, based on microwave and optical fibers networks, and also on quantum dots, nanowires and nanorings. The elementary devices can be used to construct composed structures with important quantum properties, which may be used to manipulate the quantum transport.

Vortices in Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs models with nonminimal coupling

We investigate the presence of vortex configurations in generalized Maxwell-Chern-Simons models with nonminimal coupling, in which we introduce a function that modifies the dynamical term of the scalar field in the Lagrangian. We first follow a route already considered in previous works to develop the Bogomol'nyi procedure, and, in this context, we use the first order equations to obtain a vortex with a novel behavior at its core. We then go further and introduce a novel procedure to develop the Bogomol'nyi methodology. It supports distinct first order equations, and we then investigate another model, in which the vortex may engender inversion of the magnetic flux, an effect with no precedents in the study of vortices within the nonminimal context.

Geometrically Constrained Kinklike Configurations

In this work we study kinklike structures, which are localized solutions that appear in models described by real scalar fields. The model to be considered is characterized by two real scalar fields and includes a function of one of the two fields that modifies the kinematics associated to the other field. The investigation brings to light a first order framework that minimizes the energy of the solutions by introducing an auxiliary function that directly contributes to describe the system. We explore an interesting route, in which one field acts independently, entrapping the other field, inducing important modifications in the profile of the localized structure. The procedure may make the solution to spring up as a kinklike configuration with internal structure, engendering the important feature that also appears directly connected with issues of current interest at the nanometric scale, in particular in the electronic transport in molecules in the presence of vibrational degrees of freedom.

Quasi-compact vortices

We deal with planar vortex structures in Maxwell-Higgs models in the presence of a generalized magnetic permeability. The model under investigation engenders a real parameter that controls the behavior of the tail of the solutions and of the quantities associated to them. As the parameter gets larger, the solutions attain their boundary values faster, unveiling the existence of a peculiar feature, the presence of double exponential tails. However, the solutions are not compact so we call them quasi-compact vortices.

Model for clustering of living species

Clusters appear in nature in a diversity of contexts, involving distances as long as the cosmological ones, and down to atoms and molecules and the very small nuclear size. They also appear in several other scenarios, in particular in biological systems as in ants, bees, birds, fishes, gnus and rats, for instance. Here we describe a model composed of a set of female and male individuals that obeys simple rules that rapidly transform an uniform initial state into a single cluster that evolves in time as a stable dynamical structure. We show that the center of mass of the structure moves as a random walk, and that the size of the cluster engenders a power law behavior in terms of the number of individuals in the system. Moreover, we also examine other possibilities, in particular the case of two distinct species that can evolve to form one or two distinct clusters.

First order formalism for thick branes in modified gravity with Lagrange multiplier

This work discuss the construction of braneworld solutions in modified gravity with Lagrange multipliers. We examine the general aspects of the model and present a first order formalism that help us to find analytic solutions of the equations of motion. We also investigate some explicit models, analyse linear stability of the metric and comment on how to relate models investigated in other works to the ones examined in the present study.

Narrow peaks of full transmission in simple quantum graphs

This work deals with quantum graphs, focusing on the transmission properties they engender. We first select two simple diamond graphs, and two hexagonal graphs in which the vertices are all of degree 3, and investigate their transmission coefficients. In particular, we identified regions in which the transmission is fully suppressed. We also considered the transmission coefficients of some series and parallel arrangements of the two basic graphs, with the vertices still preserving the degree 3 condition, and then identified specific series and parallel compositions that allow for windows of no transmission. Inside some of these windows, we found very narrow peaks of full transmission, which are consequences of constructive quantum interference. Possibilities of practical use as the experimental construction of devices of current interest to control and manipulate quantum transmission are also discussed.

Oscillons in hyperbolic models

In this work we examine kink-antikink collisions in two distinct hyperbolic models. The models depend on a deformation parameter, which controls two main characteristics of the potential with two degenerate minima: the height of the barrier and the values of the minima. In particular, the rest mass of the kinks decreases monotonically as the deformation parameter increases, and we identify the appearance of a gradual suppression of two bounce windows in the kink scattering and the production of long lived oscillons. The two effects are reported in connection to the presence of more than one vibrational state in the stability potential.

New results on asymmetric thick branes

This work deals with the presence and stability of thick brane solutions in the warped five dimensional braneworld scenario with a single extra spatial dimension of infinite extent. We combine two distinct procedures that give rise to new possibilities, allowing that we describe models of asymmetric thick branes, with the asymmetry being controlled by a single real parameter. We illustrate the main results with some distinct models, which show that the method works for both standard and generalized models, and the solutions are gravitationally stable against small perturbations of the metric.

Multilayered Vortices

Vortices are localized planar structures that attain topological stability and can be used to describe collective behavior in a diversity of situations of current interest in nonlinear science. In high energy physics, vortices engender integer winding number and appear under the presence of a local Abelian symmetry. In this work we study vortices in a Maxwell-Higgs model, in which the gauge symmetry is enhanced to accommodate additional symmetries, responsible to generate localized structures to be used to constrain the vortex structure in a given region in the plane. The main aim is to examine how the vortex profile changes when it inhabits a limited region, an issue of current interest to the study of vortices at the nanometric scale.

Scattering of compactlike structures

We investigate the collision of a new class of topological defects that tends to become compact as a control parameter increases to larger and larger values These new compactlike defects have, in general, more than one internal discrete mode depending on the value of the control parameter and, as usual, there is a critical velocity above which the defects escape after the collision. We noticed that below the critical velocity there are the windows of escape presenting fractal structure. An interesting novelty is the appearance of metastable structures with the formation of compactlike defects, maintaining a fixed distance from each other. Another new feature is the formation of boosted localized distributions of the scalar field which we called moving oscillons. These oscillons carry away almost all scalar field energy producing a complete disruption of the compactlike defects. The pattern of the moving oscillons depends on the control parameter, and becomes more complex as we increase its value. We conjecture that the new effects may be connected with the presence of more than one vibrational mode in the spectrum of the stability potential of the model under investigation.

Quasi-Compact Q-Balls

This work deals with charged nontopological solutions that appear in relativistic models described by a single complex scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. We study a model which supports novel analytical configurations of the Q-ball type, that engender double exponential tails, in this sense being different from both the standard and compact Q-balls. The analytical solutions are also stable, both classically and quantum-mechanically, and the stability follows as in the case of the compact configurations.

Invasion controlled pattern formation in a generalized multi-species predator-prey system

Rock-scissors-paper game, as the simplest model of intransitive relation between competing agents, is a frequently quoted model to explain the stable diversity of competitors in the race of surviving. When increasing the number of competitors we may face a novel situation because beside the mentioned unidirectional predator-prey-like dominance a balanced or peer relation can emerge between some competitors. By utilizing this possibility in the present work we generalize a four-state predator-prey type model where we establish two groups of species labeled by even and odd numbers. In particular, we introduce different invasion probabilities between and within these groups, which results in a tunable intensity of bidirectional invasion among peer species. Our study reveals an exceptional richness of pattern formations where five quantitatively different phases are observed by varying solely the strength of the mentioned inner invasion. The related transition points can be identified with the help of appropriate order parameters based on the spatial autocorrelation decay, on the fraction of empty sites, and on the variance of the species density. Furthermore, the application of diverse, alliance-specific inner invasion rates for different groups may result in the extinction of the pair of species where this inner invasion is moderate. These observations highlight that beyond the well-known and intensively studied cyclic dominance there is an additional source of complexity of pattern formation that has not been explored earlier.

Kink scattering in a hybrid model

In this work we consider a model where the potential has two topological sectors connecting three adjacent minima, as occurs with the $ϕ^6$ model. In each topological sector, the potential is symmetric around the local maximum. For $ϕ>0$ there is a linear map between the model and the $λϕ^4$ model. For $ϕ<0$ the potential is reflected. Linear stability analysis of kink and antikink lead to discrete and continuum modes related by a linear coordinate transformation to those known analytically for the $λϕ^4$ model. Fixing one topological sector, the structure of antikink-kink scattering is related to the observed in the $λϕ^4$ model. For kink-antikink collisions a new structure of bounce windows appear. Depending on the initial velocity, one can have oscillations of the scalar field at the center of mass even for one bounce, or a change of topological sector. We also found a structure of one-bounce, with secondary windows corresponding to the changing of the topological sector accumulating close to each one-bounce windows. The kink-kink collisions are characterized by a repulsive interaction and there is no possibility of forming a bound state.

Vortices in a generalized Maxwell-Higgs model with visible and hidden sectors

We investigate the presence of vortices in generalized Maxwell-Higgs models with a hidden sector. The model engenders $U(1)\times U(1)$ symmetry, in a manner that the sectors are coupled via the visible magnetic permeability depending only on the hidden scalar field. We develop a first order framework in which the hidden sector decouples from the visible one. We illustrate the results with two specific examples, that give rise to the presence of vortices with internal structure.

Basin entropy behavior in a cyclic model of the rock-paper-scissors type

We deal with stochastic network simulations in a model with three distinct species that compete under cyclic rules which are similar to the rules of the popular rock-paper-scissors game. We investigate the Hamming distance density and then the basin entropy behavior, running the simulations for some typical values of the parameters mobility, predation and reproduction and for very long time evolutions. The results show that the basin entropy is another interesting tool of current interest to investigate chaotic features of the network simulations that are usually considered to describe aspects of biodiversity in the cyclic three-species model.
