Kink scattering in hyperbolic models

In this work we study kink-antikink and antikink-kink collisions in hyperbolic models of fourth and sixth order. We compared the patterns of scattering with known results from polynomial models of the same order. The hyperbolic models considered here tend to the polynomial $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models in the limit of small values of the scalar field. We show that kinks and antikinks that interact hyperbolically with fourth order differ sensibly from those governed by the polynomial $ϕ^4$ model. The increasing of the order of interaction to the sixth order shows that the hyperbolic and polynomial models give intricate structures of scattering that differ only slightly. The dependence on the order of interaction are related to some characteristics of the models such as the potential of perturbations and the number of vibrational modes.

First order framework for gauge k-vortices

We study vortices in generalized Maxwell-Higgs models, with the inclusion of a quadratic kinetic term with the covariant derivative of the scalar field in the Lagrangian density. We discuss the stressless condition and show that the presence of analytical solutions help us to define the model compatible with the existence of first order equations. A method to decouple the first order equations and to construct the model is then introduced and, as a bonus, we get the energy depending exclusively on a function of the fields calculated from the boundary conditions. We investigate some specific possibilities and find, in particular, a compact vortex configuration in which the energy density is all concentrated in a unit circle.

Configurational Entropy for Skyrmion-like Magnetic Structures

In this work we explore the relationship between two ideas recently introduced in the literature. The first one deals with a quantity related to the informational contents of solutions of spatially localized structures, and the second consists of obtaining analytical solutions to describe skyrmion-like structures in magnetic materials. In particular, we use the topological charge density to extract information on the configurational entropy of the magnetic structure.

Phase transitions in dependence of apex predator decaying ratio in a cyclic dominant system

Cyclic dominant systems, like rock-paper-scissors game, are frequently used to explain biodiversity in nature, where mobility, reproduction and intransitive competition are on stage to provide the coexistence of competitors. A significantly new situation emerges if we introduce an apex predator who can superior all members of the mentioned three-species system. In the latter case the evolution may terminate into three qualitatively different destinations depending on the apex predator decaying ratio $q$. In particular, the whole population goes extinct or all four species survive or only the original three-species system remains alive as we vary the control parameter. These solutions are separated by a discontinuous and a continuous phase transitions at critical $q$ values. Our results highlight that cyclic dominant competition can offer a stable way to survive even in a predator-prey-like system that can be maintained for large interval of critical parameter values.

Planar ringlike vortices

We investigate the presence of vortex structures in generalized Maxwell-Higgs and Chern-Simons-Higgs models in the three-dimensional spacetime. Despite the important difference between the Maxwell and Chern-Simons dynamics, we have been able to introduce first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion for static and rotationally symmetric field configurations. In both cases, solutions of the first order equations engender minimum energy, and we have found vortex configurations whose internal structure unveils interesting and unusual ringlike profile.

Bimagnetic Monopoles

Motivated by recent results on small and hollow magnetic monopoles and on core and shell bimagnetic nanoparticles, we propose the construction of bimagnetic monopoles, which are structures that accommodate a magnetic monopole inside another magnetic monopole.

First Order Formalism for Generalized Vortices

This work develops a procedure to find classes of Lagrangian densities that describe generalizations of the Abelian Maxwell-Higgs, the Chern-Simons-Higgs and the Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs models. The investigation focuses on the construction of models that support vortices that obey the stressless condition and lead to first order differential equations which are compatible with the equations of motion. The results induce the appearance of constraints that restrict the choice of the Lagrangian densities, but help us to introduce an auxiliary function that allows to calculate the energy without knowing the explicit form of the solutions.

Stable finite energy global vortices and asymptotic freedom

This work deals with global vortices in the three-dimensional spacetime. We study the case of a simple model with $U(1)$ symmetry and find a way to describe stable, finite energy global vortices. The price we pay to stabilize the solution is the presence of scale invariance, but we have found a way to trade it with an electric charge in a medium with generalized permittivity, which is further used to capture the basic feature of asymptotic freedom.

Small and hollow magnetic monopoles

We deal with the presence of magnetic monopoles in a non Abelian model that generalizes the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov model in three spatial dimensions. We investigate the energy density of the static and spherically symmetric solutions to find first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion. The system is further studied and two distinct classes of solutions are obtained, one that can also be described by analytical solutions which is called small monopole, since it is significantly smaller than the standard 't~Hooft-Polyakov monopole. The other type of structure is the hollow monopole, since the energy density is endowed with a hole at its core. The hollow monopole can be smaller or larger than the standard monopole, depending on the value of the parameter that controls the magnetic permeability of the model.

Novel results for kinklike structures and their connections to quantum mechanics

In this work we use the deformation procedure and explore the route to obtain distinct field theory models that present similar stability potentials. Starting from systems that interact polynomially or hyperbolically, we use a deformation function which allows to construct other theories having the feature of giving rise to the same stability potentials. Such deformation function leads to smooth potentials according to a specific choice of a single parameter. Among the results, one shows that for models with asymmetric topological sectors, the appearance of a new stability potential is also possible.

Novel connection between lump-like structures and quantum mechanics

This work deals with lump-like structures in models described by a single real scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. We start with a model that supports lump-like configurations and use the deformation procedure to construct scalar field theories that support both lumps and kinks, with the corresponding stability investigation giving rise to new physical systems. Very interestingly, we find models that support stable topological solutions, with the stability potential being able to support a tower of non-negative bound states, generating distinct families of potentials of current interest to quantum mechanics. We also describe models where the lump-like solutions give rise to stability potentials that have the shape of a double-well.

Analytical study of kinklike structures with polynomial tails

This work deals with models described by a single real scalar field in two-dimensional spacetime. The aim is to propose potentials that support massless minima and investigate the presence of kinklike structures that engender polynomial tails. The results unveil the presence of families of asymmetric solutions with energy density and linear stability that behave adequately, enhancing the importance of the analytical study. We stress that the novel topological structures which we find in this work engender long range interactions that are of current interest to statistical mechanics, dipolar quantum gases and the study of quantum information with Rydberg atoms.

Magnetic monopoles with internal structure

We investigate the presence of magnetic monopoles in a model that extends the non Abelian model originally studied by 't Hooft and Polyakov with the inclusion of an extra neutral field. The investigation includes modifications of the dynamics of the gauged fields, and the main results unveil a route to construct solutions that engender internal structure and live in a compact space.

Spatial patterns and biodiversity in off-lattice simulations of a cyclic three-species Lotka-Volterra model

Stochastic simulations of cyclic three-species spatial predator-prey models are usually performed in square lattices with nearest neighbor interactions starting from random initial conditions. In this Letter we describe the results of off-lattice Lotka-Volterra stochastic simulations, showing that the emergence of spiral patterns does occur for sufficiently high values of the (conserved) total density of individuals. We also investigate the dynamics in our simulations, finding an empirical relation characterizing the dependence of the characteristic peak frequency and amplitude on the total density. Finally, we study the impact of the total density on the extinction probability, showing how a low population density may jeopardize biodiversity.

How directional mobility affects biodiversity in rock-paper-scissors models

This work deals with a system of three distinct species that changes in time under the presence of mobility, selection, and reproduction, as in the popular rock-paper-scissors game. The novelty of the current study is the modification of the mobility rule to the case of directional mobility, in which the species move following the direction associated to a larger (averaged) number density of selection targets in the surrounding neighborhood. Directional mobility can be used to simulate eyes that see or a nose that smells, and we show how it may contribute to reduce the probability of coexistence.

Maxwell-Higgs vortices with internal structure

Vortices are considered in relativistic Maxwell-Higgs systems in interaction with a neutral scalar field. The gauge field interacts with the neutral field via the presence of generalized permeability, and the charged and neutral scalar fields interact in a way dictated by the presence of first order differential equations that solve the equations of motion. The neutral field may be seen as the source field of the vortex, and we study some possibilities, which modify the standard Maxwell-Higgs solution and include internal structure to the vortex.

Fermion bound states in geometrically deformed backgrounds

This work deals with the behavior of fermions in the background of kinklike structures in the two-dimensional spacetime. The kinklike structures appear from bosonic scalar field models that engender distinct profiles and interact with the fermion fields via the standard Yukawa coupling. We first consider two models that engender parity symmetry, one leading to the exclusion of fermion bound states, and the other to the inclusion of bound states, when the parameter that controls the bosonic structure varies from zero to unity. We then go on and investigate another model where the kinklike solution explicitly breaks parity symmetry, leading to fermion bound states that are spatially asymmetric.

A novel connection between scalar field theories and quantum mechanics

This work deals with scalar field theories and supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The investigation is inspired by a recent result, which shows how to use the reconstruction mechanism to describe two distinct field theories from the very same quantum mechanics potential, and by an older work, which describes the deformation procedure that offers an interesting way to generate and solve new scalar field theories, starting from a given model of current interest. We use the procedure to unveil a new route, from which one can describe families of scalar field theories that engender the very same quantum mechanics potential. The approach can be applied algorithmically, and implemented to generate models that give rise to distinct quantum mechanics systems as well.
