Analytic vortex solutions in generalized models of the Maxwell-Higgs type

This work deals with the presence of analytical vortex configurations in generalized models of the Maxwell-Higgs type in the three-dimensional spacetime. We implement a procedure that allows to decouple the first order equations, which we use to solve the model analytically. The approach is exemplified with three distinct models that show the robustness of the construction. In the third model, one finds analytical solutions that exhibit interesting compact vortex behavior.

From sine-Gordon to vacuumless systems in flat and curved spacetimes

In this work we start from the Higgs prototype model to introduce a new model, which makes a smooth transition between systems with well located minima and systems that support no minima at all. We implement this possibility using the deformation procedure, which allows the obtention of a sine-Gordon-like model, controlled by a real parameter that gives rise to a family of models, reproducing the sine-Gordon and the so-called vacuumless models. We also study the thick brane scenarios associated with these models and investigate their stability and renormalization group flow. In particular, one shows how gravity can change from the 5-dimensional warped geometry with a single extra dimension of infinite extent to the conventional 5-dimensional Minkowski geometry.

Kinklike structures in models of the Dirac-Born-Infeld type

The present work investigates several models of a single real scalar field, engendering kinetic term of the Dirac-Born-Infeld type. Such theories introduce nonlinearities to the kinetic part of the Lagrangian, which presents a square root restricting the field evolution and including additional powers in derivatives of the scalar field, controlled by a real parameter. In order to obtain topological solutions analytically, we propose a first-order framework that simplifies the equation of motion ensuring solutions that are linearly stable. This is implemented using the deformation method, and we introduce examples presenting two categories of potentials, one having polynomial interactions and the other with nonpolynomial interactions. We also explore how the Dirac-Born-Infeld kinetic term affects the properties of the solutions. In particular, we note that the kinklike solutions are similar to the ones obtained through models with standard kinetic term and canonical potential, but their energy densities and stability potentials vary according to the parameter introduced to control the new models.

Hamming distance and mobility behavior in generalized rock-paper-scissors models

This work reports on two related investigations of stochastic simulations which are widely used to study biodiversity and other related issues. We first deal with the behavior of the Hamming distance under the increase of the number of species and the size of the lattice, and then investigate how the mobility of the species contributes to jeopardize biodiversity. The investigations are based on the standard rules of reproduction, mobility and predation or competition, which are described by specific rules, guided by generalization of the rock-paper-scissors game, valid in the case of three species. The results on the Hamming distance indicate that it engenders universal behavior, independently of the number of species and the size of the square lattice. The results on the mobility confirm the prediction that it may destroy diversity, if it is increased to higher and higher values.

Kinks and branes in models with hyperbolic interactions

In this work we investigate several models described by a single real scalar field with non-polynomial interactions, constructed to support topological solutions. We do this using the deformation procedure to introduce a function which allows to construct two distinct families of hyperbolic potentials, controlled by three distinct parameters, in the standard formalism. In this way, the procedure allows us to get analytical solutions, and then investigate the energy density, linear stability and zero mode. We move on and introduce a non-standard formalism to obtain compact solutions, analytically. We also investigate these hyperbolic models in the braneworld context, considering both the standard and non-standard possibilities. The results show how to construct distinct braneworld models which are implemented via the first order formalism and are stable against fluctuation of the metric tensor.

Twinlike Models for Kinks, Vortices and Monopoles

This work deals with twinlike models that support topological structures such as kinks, vortices and monopoles. We investigate the equations of motion and develop the first order framework to show how to build distinct models with the same solution and energy density, as required to make them twinlike models. We also investigate how the stability under small fluctuations behaves and introduce the conditions to get the same stability on general grounds. In particular, we study models that support kinks, vortices and monopoles in one, two, and three spatial dimensions, respectively.

Compact Chern-Simons vortices

We introduce and investigate new models of the Chern-Simons type in the three-dimensional spacetime, focusing on the existence of compact vortices. The models are controlled by potentials driven by a single real parameter that can be used to change the profile of the vortex solutions as they approach their boundary values. One of the models unveils an interesting new behavior, the tendency to make the vortex compact, as the parameter increases to larger and larger values. We also investigate the behavior of the energy density and calculate the total energy numerically.

Apex predator and the cyclic competition in a rock-paper-scissors game of three species

This work deals with the effects of an apex predator on the cyclic competition among three distinct species that follow the rules of the rock-paper-scissors game. The investigation develops standard stochastic simulations but is motivated by a novel procedure which is explained in the work. We add the apex predator as the fourth species in the system that contains three species that evolve following the standard rules of migration, reproduction and predation, and study how the system evolves in this new environment, in comparison with the case in the absence of the apex predator. The results show that the apex predator engenders the tendency to spread uniformly in the lattice, contributing to destroy the spiral patterns, keeping biodiversity but diminishing the average size of the clusters of the species that compete cyclically.

Generalized Born-Infeld-like models for kinks and branes

In this work we deal with a non-canonical scalar field in the two-dimensional spacetime. We search for a generalized model that is twin of the standard model, supporting the same defect structure with the same energy density. We also study the stability of the defect solution under small fluctuations, which is governed by a Sturm-Liouville equation, and show how to make it stable. The model is then modified and used in the five-dimensional spacetime to construct a thick brane that engenders the first order framework and preserves the twinlike behavior, under tensorial fluctuations of the metric in its gravitational sector.

From Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics to Scalar Field Theories

In this work we address the reconstruction problem, investigating the construction of field theories from supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The procedure is reviewed, starting from reflectionless potentials that admit one and two bound states. We show that, although the field theory reconstructed from the potential that support a single bound state is unique, it may break unicity in the case of two bound states. We illustrate this with an example, which leads us with two distinct field theories.

Two Dimensional Horava-Lifshitz Black Hole Solutions

In this paper we address the issue of black hole solutions in (1+1)-dimensional non-projectable Horava-Lifshitz gravity. We consider several models by considering different potentials in the scalar matter sector. We also consider the gravitational collapse of a distribution of pressureless dust filling a region in one-dimensional space. The time of the collapse can be faster or slower depending on the parameter $λ$ of the theory.

A novel procedure for the identification of chaos in complex biological systems

We demonstrate the presence of chaos in stochastic simulations that are widely used to study biodiversity in nature. The investigation deals with a set of three distinct species that evolve according to the standard rules of mobility, reproduction and predation, with predation following the cyclic rules of the popular rock, paper and scissors game. The study uncovers the possibility to distinguish between time evolutions that start from slightly different initial states, guided by the Hamming distance which heuristically unveils the chaotic behavior. The finding opens up a quantitative approach that relates the correlation length to the average density of maxima of a typical species, and an ensemble of stochastic simulations is implemented to support the procedure. The main result of the work shows how a single and simple experimental realization that counts the density of maxima associated with the chaotic evolution of the species serves to infer its correlation length. We use the result to investigate others distinct complex systems, one dealing with a set of differential equations that can be used to model a diversity of natural and artificial chaotic systems, and another one, focusing on the ocean water level.

From Scalar Field Theories to Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

In this work we report a new result that appears when one investigates the route that starts from a scalar field theory and ends on a supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The subject has been studied before in several distinct ways and here we unveil an interesting novelty, showing that the same scalar field model may describe distinct quantum mechanical problems.

String networks with junctions in competition models

In this work we give specific examples of competition models, with six and eight species, whose three-dimensional dynamics naturally leads to the formation of string networks with junctions, associated with regions that have a high concentration of enemy species. We study the two- and three-dimensional evolution of such networks, both using stochastic network and mean field theory simulations. If the predation, reproduction and mobility probabilities do not vary in space and time, we find that the networks attain scaling regimes with a characteristic length roughly proportional to $t^{1/2}$, where $t$ is the physical time, thus showing that the presence of junctions, on its own, does not have a significant impact on their scaling properties.

Hybrid Bloch Brane

This work reports on models described by two real scalar fields coupled with gravity in the five-dimensional spacetime, with a warped geometry involving one infinite extra dimension. Through a mechanism that smoothly changes a thick brane into a hybrid brane, one investigates the appearance of hybrid branes hosting internal structure, characterized by the splitting on the energy density and the volcano potential, induced by the parameter which controls interactions between the two scalar fields. In particular, we investigate distinct symmetric and asymmetric hybrid brane scenarios.

Fermionic bound states in distinct kinklike backgrounds

This work deals with fermions in the background of distinct localized structures in the two-dimensional spacetime. Although the structures have similar topological character, which is responsible for the appearance of fractionally charged excitations, we want to investigate how the geometric deformations that appear in the localized structures contribute to the change in the physical properties of the fermionic bound states. We investigate the two-kink and compact kinklike backgrounds, and consider two distinct boson-fermion interactions, one motivated by supersymmetry and the other described by the standard Yukawa coupling.

Semi-Compact Skyrmion-like Structures

We study three distinct types of planar, spherically symmetric and localized structures, one of them having non-topological behavior and the two others being of topological nature. The non-topological structures have energy density localized in a compact region in the plane, but are unstable against spherically symmetric fluctuations. The topological structures are stable and behave as vortices and skyrmions at larger distances, but they engender interesting compact behavior as one approaches their inner cores. They are semi-compact skyrmion-like spin textures generated from models that allow to control the internal behavior of such topological structures.
