Chiral Lagrangian approach to the J/psi breakup cross section

We summarize the results of the SU(4) chiral meson Lagrangian approach to the cross section for J/psi breakup by pion and rho meson impact and suggest a new scheme for the introduction of formfactors for the meson-meson interaction. This scheme respects the fact that on the quark level of description the contact and the meson exchange diagrams are constructed by so-called box and triangle diagrams which contain a different number of vertex functions for the quark-meson coupling. A model calculation for Gaussian vertex functions is presented and the relative importance of contact and meson exchange processes is discussed. We evaluate the dependence of the breakup cross section on the masses of the final D-meson states which can be used for the study of in-medium effects on this quantity.

Cosmological Particle Creation and Baryon Number Violation in a Conformal Unified Theory

We consider a conformal unified theory as the basis of conformal-invariant cosmological model where the permanent rigid state of the universe is compatible with the primordial element abundance and supernova data. We show that the cosmological creation of vector Z and W bosons, in this case, is sufficient to explain the CMB temperature (2.7 K). The primordial bosons violate the baryon number in the standard model as a result of anomalous nonconservation of left-handed currents and a nonzero squeezed vacuum expectation value of the topological Chern-Simons functional.

Description of Supernova Data in Conformal Cosmology without Cosmological Constant

We consider cosmological consequences of a conformal invariant formulation of Einstein's General Relativity where instead of the scale factor of the spatial metrics in the action functional a massless scalar (dilaton) field occurs which scales all masses including the Planck mass. Instead of the expansion of the universe we get the Hoyle-Narlikar type of mass evolution, where the temperature history of the universe is replaced by the mass history. We show that this conformal invariant cosmological model gives a satisfactory description of the new supernova Ia data for the effective magnitude - redshift relation without a cosmological constant and make a prediction for the high-redshift behavior which deviates from that of standard cosmology for $z>1.7$.

Chiral quark model with infrared cut-off for the description of meson properties in hot matter

A simple chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with a quark confinement mechanism is constructed for the description of the light meson sector of QCD at finite temperature. Unphysical quark production thresholds in the NJL model are excluded by an infrared cut-off in the momentum integration within quark loop diagrams. This chiral quark model satisfies the low energy theorems. Using the vacuum masses and decay widths of π- and ρ-mesons for fixing the model parameters, the properties of the σ- meson are derived. Within the Matsubara formalism, the model is systematically extended to finite temperatures where chiral symmetry restoration due to a dropping constituent quark mass entails a vanishing of the infrared cut-off (deconfinement) at the pion Mott temperature T_c=186 MeV. Besides of the pion mass and weak decay constant, the masses, coupling constants and decay widths of σ- and ρ-mesons in hot matter are investigated. The quark-antiquark decay channel of the light mesons is opened for T>T_c only and becomes particularly strong for the ρ- meson. The two-pion decay channel below T_c has almost constant width for the ρ- meson up to T_c, but for the σ-meson it closes below T_c such that a scalar meson state with vanishing width is obtained as a precursor of the chiral/deconfinement transition.

Finite T meson correlations and quark deconfinement

Finite temperature spatial $\bar q q$ correlation modes in the $π$ and $ρ$ channels are studied with the rainbow-ladder truncated quark Dyson-Schwinger equation and Bethe-Salpeter equation in the Matsubara formalism. To retain the finite range of the effective interaction while facilitating summation over fermion Matsubara modes necessary to ensure continuity at {T=0}, a separable kernel is used. The model is fixed by {T=0} properties and it implements dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement. Above and below the deconfinement and chiral restoration transitions, we study $M_π(T)$, $f_π(T)$ and the 3-space transverse and longitudinal masses $M_ρ^T(T)$ and $M_ρ^L(T)$. For the $ρ$ mode we also study the strong and electromagnetic partial widths to determine the $T$-dependence that is generated by the quark content. The $ρ\to ππ$ width decreases sharply just above the chiral restoration transition leaving the $ρ$ with only its narrow {$e^+ e^-$} width. We discuss improvements needed by this model, especially in regard to the high $T$ behavior of the masses where we compare to lattice QCD simulations.

Cosmological Creation of Vector Bosons and Fermions

The cosmological creation of primordial vector bosons and fermions is described in the Standard Model of strong and electro-weak interactions given in a space-time with the relative standard of measurement of geometric intervals. Using the reparametrization - invariant perturbation theory and the holomorphic representation of quantized fields we derive equations for the Bogoliubov coefficients and distribution functions of created particles. The main result is the intensive cosmological creation of longitudinal Z and W bosons (due to their mass singularity) by the universe in the rigid state. We introduce the hypothesis that the decay of the primordially created vector bosons is the origin of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation.

Population clustering as a signal for deconfinement in accreting compact stars

We study the evolution of the rotation frequency for accreting compact stars. The discontinuous change of the moment of inertia of a rapidly rotating star due to the possible quark core appearance entails a characteristic change in the spin evolution. Numerical solutions have been performed using a model equation of state describing the deconfinement phase transition. Trajectories of spin evolution are discussed in the angular velocity - baryon number plane (phase diagram) for different accretion scenarios defined by the initial values of mass and magnetic field of the star, as well as mass accretion rate and magnetic field decay time. We observe a characteristic increase in the waiting time when a configuration enters the quark core regime. Overclustering of the population of Z sources of LMXBs in the phase diagram is suggested as a direct measurement of the critical line for the deconfinement phase transition since it is related to the behaviour of the moment of inertia of the compact star.

Meissner effect for color superconducting quark matter

The behaviour of the magnetic field inside the superconducting quark matter core of a neutron star is investigated in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We take into account the simultaneous coupling of the diquark condensate field to the usual magnetic and to the gluomagnetic gauge fields. We solve the problem for three different physical situations: a semi-infinite region with a planar boundary, a spherical region, and a cylindrical region. We show that Meissner currents near the quark core boundary effectively screen the external static magnetic field.

Cooling of Hybrid Neutron Stars and Hypothetical Self-bound Objects with Superconducting Quark Cores

We study the consequences of superconducting quark cores (with color-flavor-locked phase as representative example) for evolution of temperature profiles and the cooling curves in quark-hadron hybrid stars and in hypothetical self-bounded objects having no a hadron shell (quark core neutron stars). The quark gaps are varied from 0 to $Δ_q =50$ MeV. For hybrid stars we find time scales of $1\div5$, $5\div10$ and $50\div100$ years for the formation of a quasistationary temperature distribution in the cases $Δ_q =0$, 0.1 MeV and $\gsim$ 1 MeV, respectively. These time scales are governed by the heat transport within quark cores for large diquark gaps ($Δ\gsim$ 1 MeV) and within the hadron shell for small diquark gaps ($Δ\lsim 0.1$ MeV). For quark core neutron stars we find a time scale $\simeq 300$ years for the formation of a quasistationary temperature distribution in the case $Δ\gsim$ 10 MeV and a very short one for $Δ\lsim$ 1 MeV. If hot young compact objects will be observed they can be interpreted as manifestation of large gap color superconductivity. Depending on the size of the pairing gaps, the compact star takes different paths in the ${lg}T_s $ vs. ${lg} t$ diagram where $T_s$ is the surface temperature. Compared to the corresponding hadronic model which well fits existing data the model for the hybrid neutron star (with a large diquark gap) shows too fast cooling. The same conclusion can be drawn for the corresponding self-bound objects.

Cosmological Consequences of Conformal General Relativity

We consider cosmological consequences of a conformal-invariant unified theory which is dynamically equivalent to general relativity and is given in a space with the geometry of similarity. We show that the conformal-invariant theory offers new explanations for to such problems as the arrow of time, initial cosmic data, dark matter and accelerating evolution of the universe in the dust stage.

Topological invariant variables in QCD

We show that the class of functions of topologically nontrivial gauge transformations in QCD includes a zero-mode of the Gauss law constraint. The equivalent unconstrained system compatible with Feynman's integral is derived in terms of topological invariant variables, where the zero-mode is identified with the winding number collective variable and leads to the dominance of the Wu-Yang monopole. Physical consequences of Feynman's path integral in terms of the topological invariant variables are studied.

Mott dissociation of D-mesons at the chiral phase transition and anomalous J/Psi suppression

We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium breakup processes due to the Mott-effect for D-mesons at the chiral phase transition. A model calculation for the process J/Psi+pi --> D+D^*+ h.c. is presented which demonstrates that threshold effects in the thermal averaged breakup cross section can be explained as a Mott transition where final state quark-antiquark bound states enter the continuum of resonant states at the QCD phase transition. Applications to heavy-ion collisions within a modified Glauber model scenario and the phenomenon of anomalous J/$ψ$ suppression in the CERN NA50 experiment are addressed.

Deconfinement transition in rotating compact stars

Using the formalism of general relativity for axially symmetric gravitational fields and their sources - rotating compact stars - a perturbation theory with respect to angular velocity is developed and physical quantities such as mass, shape, momentum of inertia and total energy of the star are defined. The change of the internal structure of the star due to rotation has been investigated and the different contributions to the moment of inertia have been evaluated separately. Numerical solutions have been performed using a two-flavor model equation of state describing the deconfinement phase transition as constrained by the conservation of total baryon number and electric charge. During the spin down evolution of the rotating neutron star, below critical values of angular velocity a quark matter core can appear which might be detected as a characteristic signal in the pulsar timing. Within the spin-down scenario due to magnetic dipole radiation it is shown that the deviation of the braking index from $n=3$ could signal not only the occurrence but also the size of a quark core in the pulsar. A new scenario is proposed where, due to mass accretion onto the rapidly rotating compact star, a spin-down to spin-up transition might signal a deconfinement transition in its interior.

Magnetic field of pulsars with superconducting quark core

Within recent nonperturbative approaches to the effective quark interaction the diquark condensate forms a superconductor of second kind. Therefore the magnetic field will not be expelled from the superconducting quark core in accordance with observational data which indicate that life times of pulsar magnetic fields exceed 10^7 years.

Deconfinement signals from pulsar timing

The occurence of a quark matter core in rotating compact stars has been investigated within general relativity as a function of both the rotational frequency and the total baryon number. We demonstrate that the deviation of the braking index from $n=3$ signals not only the occurence but also the size of a quark matter core in a pulsar. We suggest that in systems with mass accretion onto a rapidly rotating compact star a spin-down to spin-up transition might signal a deconfinement transition in its interior.

Diquark Condensates and Compact Star Cooling

The effect of color superconductivity on the cooling of quark stars and neutron stars with large quark cores is investigated. Various known and new quark-neutrino processes are studied. As a result, stars being in the color flavor locked (CFL) color superconducting phase cool down extremely fast. Quark stars with no crust cool down too rapidly in disagreement with X-ray data. The cooling of stars being in the N_f =2 color superconducting (2SC) phase with a crust is compatible with existing X-ray data. Also the cooling history of stars with hypothetic pion condensate nuclei and a crust does not contradict the data.

Diquark condensates and the magnetic field of pulsars

We study the consequences of superconducting quark cores in neutron stars for the magnetic fields of pulsars. We find that within recent nonperturbative approaches to the effective quark interaction the diquark condensate forms a superconductor of second kind whereas previously quark matter was considered as a first kind superconductor. In both cases the magnetic field which is generated in the surrounding hadronic shell of superfluid neutrons and superconducting protons can penetrate into the quark matter core since it is concentrated in neutron vortices where the field strength exceeds the critical value. Therefore the magnetic field will not be expelled from the superconducting quark core with the consequence that there is no decay of the magnetic fields of pulsars. Thus we conclude that the occurence of a superconducting quark matter core in pulsars does not contradict the observational data which indicate that magnetic fields of pulsars have life times larger than $10^7$ years.

Topological gauge invariant variables in QCD

We suggest that proper variables for the description of non-Abelian theories are those gauge invariant ones which keep the invariance of the winding number functional with respect to topologically nontrivial (large) gauge transformations. We present a model for these variables using the zero mode of the Gauss law constraint and investigate their physical consequences for hadron spectrum and confinement on the level of the generating functional for two-color QCD.
