Energy release due to antineutrino untrapping from hot quark stars

An equation of state for 2-flavor quark matter (QM) with diquark condensation under the conditions for compact stars -$β$-equilibrium, charge and color neutrality- is presented. Trapped antineutrinos prevent the formation of the diquark condensate at moderate densities above a critical value of the antineutrino chemical potential $μ_{\bar ν_e}^c$. The following consequences are presented: 1) The star develops a 2-phase structure ($μ_{\bar ν_e}\geq μ_{\bar ν_e}^c$): a color superconducting QM core and a normal QM shell. 2)During the cooling, when the temperature is small enough ($T<1$ MeV) the antineutrino mean free path becomes larger than the thickness of the normal QM shell and the antineutrinos get untrapped in a sudden burst. The energy release is estimated as $\simeq 10^{52}$ erg and an antineutrino pulse is expected to be observed.

Hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC: heavy flavour physics

We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives benchmark heavy quark and quarkonium cross sections for $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC against which the $AA$ rates can be compared in the study of the quark-gluon plasma. We also provide an assessment of the theoretical uncertainties in these benchmarks. We then discuss some of the cold matter effects on quarkonia production, including nuclear absorption, scattering by produced hadrons, and energy loss in the medium. Hot matter effects that could reduce the observed quarkonium rates such as color screening and thermal activation are then discussed. Possible quarkonium enhancement through coalescence of uncorrelated heavy quarks and antiquarks is also described. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the LHC detectors to measure heavy quarks and quarkonia as well as the Monte Carlo generators used in the data analysis.

Energy release due to antineutrino untrapping and diquark condensation in hot quark star evolution

We study the consequences of antineutrino trapping in hot quark matter for quark star configurations with possible diquark condensation. Due to the conditions of charge neutrality and beta-equilibrium the flavor asymmetry increases with the number density of trapped antineutrinos such that above a critical value of the antineutrino chemical potential of 30 MeV diquark condensation is inhibited. When the quark star cools a two-phase structure occurs: a superconducting quark matter core surrounded by a shell of normal quark matter. Below the critical temperature of about 1 MeV, the antineutrino mean free path becomes larger than the thickness of the normal quark matter shell so that they get untrapped within a sudden process. By comparing the masses of configurations with the same baryon number we estimate that the release of energy due to the antineutrino untrapping transition can be in the range of 10^{51} to 10^{52} erg.

Pion broadening and low-mass dilepton production

We determine mass and transverse momentum spectra of dileptons produced in Pb+Au (158 GeV/u) collisions within a pion annihilation model. A fit to the data requires simultaneous mass reduction and broadening of the in-medium rho propagator. The introduction of a finite pion width, as required within self-consistent approaches to the interacting pion gas, further improves the agreement with the data.

Pion damping width from SU(2) x SU(2) NJL model

Within the framework of the NJL model, we investigate the modification of the pion damping width in a hot pion gas for temperatures ranging from 0 to 180 MeV. The pion is found to broaden noticeably at T > 60 MeV. Near the chiral phase transition T ~ 180 MeV, the pion width is saturated and amounts to 70 MeV. The main contribution to the width comes from pion-pion collisions. Other contributions are found negligibly small.

Coexistence of color superconductivity and chiral symmetry breaking within the NJL model

The phase diagram for quark matter is investigated within a simple Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model without vector correlations. It is found that the phase structure in the temperature-density plane depends sensitively on the parametrization of the model. We present two schemes of parametrization of the model where within the first one a first order phase transition from a phase with broken chiral symmetry to a color superconducting phase for temperatures below the triple point at T_t= 55 MeV occurs whereas for the second one a second order phase transition for temperatures below T_t = 7 MeV is found. In the latter case, there is also a coexistence phase of broken chiral symmetry with color superconductivity, which is a new finding within this class of models. Possible consequences for the phenomenology of the QCD phase transition at high baryon densities are discussed.

Effects of quark matter and color superconductivity in compact stars

The equation of state for quark matter is derived for a nonlocal, chiral quark model within the mean field approximation. We investigate the effects of a variation of the form factors of the interaction on the phase diagram of quark matter under the condition of beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. Special emphasis is on the occurrence of a diquark condensate which signals a phase transition to color superconductivity and its effects on the equation of state. We calculate the quark star configurations by solving the Tolman- Oppenheimer- Volkoff equations and obtain for the transition from a hot, normal quark matter core of a protoneutron star to a cool diquark condensed one a release of binding energy of the order of Delta M c^2 ~ 10^{53} erg. We study the consequences of antineutrino trapping in hot quark matter for quark star configurations with possible diquark condensation and discuss the claim that this energy could serve as an engine for explosive phenomena. A "phase diagram" for rotating compact stars (angular velocity-baryon mass plane) is suggested as a heuristic tool for obtaining constraints on the equation of state of QCD at high densities. It has a critical line dividing hadronic from quark core stars which is correlated with a local maximum of the moment of inertia and can thus be subject to experimental verification by observation of the rotational behavior of accreting compact stars.

Mott Effect and J/Psi Dissociation at the Quark-Hadron Phase Transition

We investigate the in-medium modification of pseudoscalar and vector mesons in a QCD motivated chiral quark model by solving the Dyson-Schwinger equations for quarks and mesons at finite temperature for a wide mass range of meson masses, from light (pi, rho) to open-charm (D, D*) states. At the chiral / deconfinement phase transition, the quark-antiquark bound states enter the continuum of unbound states and become broad resonances (the hadronic Mott effect). We calculate the in-medium cross sections for charmonium dissociation due to collisions with light hadrons in a chiral Lagrangian approach, and show that the D and D* meson spectral broadening lowers the threshold for charmonium dissociation by pi and rho meson impact. This leads to a step-like enhancement in the reaction rate. We suggest that this mechanism for enhanced charmonium dissociation may be the physical mechanism underlying the anomalous J/Psi suppression observed by NA50.

Hadronic Spectral Function and Charm Meson Production

At the chiral restoration/deconfinement transition, most hadrons undergo a Mott transition from being bound states in the confined phase to resonances in the deconfined phase. We investigate the consequences of this qualitative change in the hadron spectrum on final state interactions of charmonium in hot and dense matter, and show that the Mott effect for D-mesons leads to a critical enhancement of the J/Psi dissociation rate. Anomalous J/Psi suppression in the NA50 experiment is discussed as well as the role of the Mott effect for the heavy flavor kinetics in future experiments at the LHC. The status of our calculations of hadron-hadron cross sections using the quark interchange and chiral Lagrangian approaches is reviewed, and an Ansatz for a unification of these schemes is given.

Heavy Quarks on the Lattice

I review the basic ideas behind lattice QCD calculations that involve charm and bottom quarks. I report on the progress in getting the correct hyperfine splitting in charmonium from lattice QCD. Some of the basic technology behind numerical lattice QCD calculations is explained by studying some specific examples: computation of the charm quark mass, and the calculation of fB.

Mapping Deconfinement with a Compact Star Phase Diagram

We have found correlations between properties of the equation of state for stellar matter with a phase transition at supernuclear densities and two characteristic features of a "phase diagram" for rotating compact stars in the angular velocity - baryon number plane: 1) the critical dividing line between mono- and two-phase star configurations and 2) the maximum mass line. The second line corresponds to the minimum mass function for black hole candidates whereas the first one is observable by a population statistics, e.g. for Z-sources in low-mass X-ray binaries. The observation of a population gap in the mass distribution for the latter is suggested as an astrophysical verification of the existence of a first order phase transition in QCD at high densities such as the deconfinement.

Phase diagram for rotating compact stars with two high density phases

For the classification of rotating compact stars with two high density phases a phase diagram in the angular velocity (Omega) - baryon number (N) plane is investigated. The dividing line N_crit(Omega) between configurations with one and two phases is correlated to a local maximum of the moment of inertia and can thus be subject to experimental verification by observation of the rotational behavior of accreting compact stars. Another characteristic line, which also can be measured is the transition line to black holes that of the maximum mass configurations. The positions and the shape of these lines are sensitive to changes in the equation of state (EoS) of stellar matter. A comparison of the regional structure of phase diagrams is performed for polytropic and relativistic mean field type EoS and correlations between the topology of the transition lines and the properties of two-phase EoS are obtained. Different scenarios of compact star evolution are discussed as trajectories in the phase diagram. It is shown that a population gap in the Omega - N plane for accreting compact stars would signal a high density phase transition and could be observed in the distribution of so called Z sources of quasi periodic oscillations in low-mass X-ray binaries.

Phase Diagram for Spinning and Accreting Neutron Stars

Neutron star configurations are considered as thermodynamical systems for which a phase diagram in the angular velocity (Omega) - baryon number (N) plane is obtained with a dividing line N_{crit}(Omega) for quark core configurations. Trajectories of neutron star evolution in this diagram are studied for different scenarios defined by the external torque acting on the star due to radiation and/or mass accretion. They show a characteristic change in the rotational kinematics when the star enters the quark core regime. For isolated pulsars the braking index signal for deconfinement has been studied in its dependence on the mass of the star. Model calculations of the spin evolution of accreting low-mass X-ray binaries in the phase diagram have been performed for different values of the initial magnetic field, its decay time as well as initial mass and mass accretion rate. Population clustering of these objects at the line N_{crit}(Omega) in the phase diagram is suggested as an observable signal for the deconfinement phase transition if it exists for spinnning and accreting neutron stars.

Origin of Matter from Vacuum in Conformal Cosmology

We introduce the hypothesis that the matter content of the universe can be a product of the decay of primordial vector bosons. The effect of the intensive cosmological creation of these primordial vector $W, ~Z $ bosons from the vacuum is studied in the framework of General Relativity and the Standard Model where the relative standard of measurement identifying conformal quantities with the measurable ones is accepted. The relative standard leads to the conformal cosmology with the z-history of masses with the constant temperature, instead of the conventional z-history of the temperature with constant masses in inflationary cosmology. In conformal cosmology both the latest supernova data and primordial nucleosynthesis are compatible with a stiff equation of state associated with one of the possible states of the infrared gravitation field. The distribution function of the created bosons in the lowest order of perturbation theory exposes a cosmological singularity as a consequence of the theorem about the absence of the massless limit of massive vector fields in quantum theory. This singularity can be removed by taking into account the collision processes leading to a thermalization of the created particles. The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature T=(M_W^2H_0)^{1/3} ~ 2.7 K occurs as an integral of motion for the universe in the stiff state. We show that this temperature can be attained by the CMB radiation being the final product of the decay of primordial bosons. The effect of anomalous nonconservation of baryon number due to the polarization of the Dirac sea vacuum by these primordial bosons is considered.

Ginzburg-Landau equations for superconducting quark matter in neutron stars

We investigate magnetic properties of color superconducting quark matter within a Ginzburg-Landau approach. The simultaneous coupling of the quark fields to gluonic and electromagnetic gauge fields leads to rotated electromagnetism with a massive (Higgsed) and a massless photon-gluon field. We derive the Ginzburg-Landau equations for superconducting quark matter taking into account the rotated electromagnetism in the general case when the rotation angle is an arbitrary function of the coordinates. We solve these equations for an isolated vortex in superconducting quark matter. We obtain a solution for the magnetic and gluomagnetic fields and expressions for the calculation of the penetration depth and the quantized magnetic flux in quark matter. For this case we have demonstrated that the occurence of electric and color Meissner currents is a consequence of the color superconducting state of quark matter.

Magnetic field of a neutron star with color superconducting quark matter core

The behaviour of the magnetic field of a neutron star with a superconducting quark matter core is investigated in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. We take into account the simultaneous coupling of the diquark condensate field to the usual magnetic and to the gluomagnetic gauge fields. We solve the Ginzburg-Landau equations by properly taking into account the boundary conditions, in particular, the gluon confinment condition. We found the distribution of the magnetic field in both the quark and hadronic phases of the neutron star and show that the magnetic field penetrates into the quark core in the form of quark vortices due to the presence of Meissner currents.

Timing evolution of accreting strange stars

It has been suggested that the QPO phenomenon in LMXB's could be explained when the central compact object is a strange star. In this work we investigate within a standard model for disk accretion whether the observed clustering of spin frequencies in a narrow band is in accordance with this hypothesis. We show that frequency clustering occurs for accreting strange stars when typical values of the parameters of magnetic field initial strength and decay time, accretion rate are chosen. In contrast to hybrid star accretion no mass clustering effect is found.

Heavy flavor kinetics at the hadronization transition

We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium breakup processes due to the Mott effect for light (pi, rho) and open-charm (D, D*) quark-antiquark bound states at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. The Mott effect for the D-mesons effectively reduces the threshold for charmonium breakup cross sections, which is suggested as an explanation of the anomalous J/psi suppression phenomenon in the NA50 experiment. Further implications of finite-temperature mesonic correlations for the hadronization of heavy flavors in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.
