Charmonium in Medium and at RHIC

The production of charmonia in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is formulated within the framework of a quantum kinetic theory simultaneously accounting for breakup and recombination processes. The survival probability of J/Psi mesons is evaluated for a Mott-Hagedorn resonance gas, whereby the pattern of anomalous J/Psi suppression at CERN-SPS can be explained by a strong coupling to open-charm states and their in-medium modification. Recent data for charmonium suppression from Au-Au collisions at RHIC are discussed.

Constraints on the high-density nuclear equation of state from the phenomenology of compact stars and heavy-ion collisions

A new scheme for testing nuclear matter equations of state (EsoS) at high densities using constraints from neutron star phenomenology and a flow data analysis of heavy-ion collisions is suggested. An acceptable EoS shall not allow the direct Urca process to occur in neutron stars with masses below $1.5~M_{\odot}$, and also shall not contradict flow and kaon production data of heavy-ion collisions. Compact star constraints include the mass measurements of 2.1 +/- 0.2 M_sun (1 sigma level) for PSR J0751+1807, of 2.0 +/- 0.1 M_sun from the innermost stable circular orbit for 4U 1636-536, the baryon mass - gravitational mass relationships from Pulsar B in J0737-3039 and the mass-radius relationships from quasiperiodic brightness oscillations in 4U 0614+09 and from the thermal emission of RX J1856-3754. This scheme is applied to a set of relativistic EsoS constrained otherwise from nuclear matter saturation properties with the result that no EoS can satisfy all constraints simultaneously, but those with density-dependent masses and coupling constants appear most promising.

Asymmetric neutrino propagation in newly born magnetized strange stars: GRB and kicks

We consider the early cooling evolution of strongly magnetized strange stars in a CFL phase with high gap Delta > 100 MeV. We demonstrate how this model may explain main features of the gamma-ray burst phenomena and also yield a strong star kick. The mechanism is based on beaming of neutrino emission along the magnetic vortex lines. We show that for sufficiently high initial temperatures T_0 ~ 30 - 60 MeV and surface magnetic fields B_s ~ 10^{15} - 10^{17} G, the energy release within the narrow beam is up to 10^{52} erg with a magnetic field dependent time scale between 10^{-2} s (for a smaller magnetic field) to 10 s. The above mechanism together with the parity violation of the neutrino-producing weak interaction processes in a magnetic field allow for the strange star kick. The higher the magnetic field the larger is the stars kick velocity. These velocities may cover the same range as observed pulsar kick velocities.

Neutron star cooling constraints for color superconductivity in hybrid stars

We apply the recently developed Log N - Log S test of compact star cooling theories for the first time to hybrid stars with a color superconducting quark matter core. While there is not yet a microscopically founded superconducting quark matter phase which would fulfill constraints from cooling phenomenology, we explore the hypothetical 2SC+X phase and show that the magnitude and density-dependence of the X-gap can be chosen to satisfy a set of tests: temperature - age (T - t), the brightness constraint, Log N - Log S, and the mass spectrum constraint. The latter test appears as a new conjecture from the present investigation.

Scalar sigma meson at finite temperature in nonlocal quark model

Properties and temperature behavior of pi and sigma bound states are studied in the framework of the nonlocal model with a separable interaction kernel based on the quark Dyson-Schwinger and the meson Bethe-Salpeter equations. M_pi(T), f_pi(T), M_sigma(T) and Gamma_{sigma -> pi pi}(T) are considered above and below the deconfinement and chiral restoration transitions.

Population synthesis as a probe of neutron star thermal evolution

The study of thermal emission from isolated, cooling neutron stars plays a key role in probing the physical conditions of both the star crust and the core. The comparison of theoretical models for the star thermal evolution with the surface temperature derived from X-ray observations of sources of different age is one of the main tools to investigate the properties of the interior and constrain the equation of state. Here we propose to use population synthesis studies as an independent approach to test the physics governing the star cooling. Theoretical Log N - Log S distributions depend on the assumed neutron star thermal evolution. We have computed distributions for several different cooling scenarios and found that comparison with the observed Log N - Log S of isolated neutron stars is effective in discriminating among cooling models. Among the eleven cooling models considered in this paper, all of which may reproduce the observed temperature vs. age diagram, only at most three can explain the Log N - Log S distribution of close-by cooling neutron stars. The Log N - Log S test, being a ``global'' one and despite some limitations, appears capable of complementing the standard temperature vs. age test used up to now.

Color Neutral Ground State of 2SC Quark Matter

We construct a new color neutral ground state of two-flavor color superconducting quark matter. It is shown that, in contrast with the conventionally considered ground state with diquark pairing in only one color direction, this new state is stable against arbitrary diquark fluctuations. In addition, the thermodynamical potential is found to be lower for this new state than for the conventional one.

Heavy quark potential and quarkonia dissociation rates

Quenched lattice data for the quark-antiquark interaction (in terms of heavy quark free energies) in the color singlet channel at finite temperatures are fitted and used within the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation formalism to obtain binding energies and scattering phase shifts for the lowest eigenstates in the charmonium and bottomonium systems in a hot gluon plasma. The partial dissociation rate due to the Bhanot-Peskin process is calculated using different assumptions for the gluon distribution function, including free massless gluons, massive gluons, and massive damped gluons. It is demonstrated that a temperature dependent gluon mass has an essential influence on the heavy quarkonia dissociation, but that this process alone is insufficient to describe the heavy quarkonia dissociation rates.

Color-spin locking phase in two-flavor quark matter for compact star phenomenology

We study a spin-1 single flavor color superconducting phase which results from a color-spin locking (CSL) interaction in two-flavor quark matter. This phase is particularly interesting for compact star cooling applications since the CSL phase may survive under charge neutrality constraints implying a mismatch between up- and down-quark chemical potentials which can destroy the scalar diquark condensate. CSL gaps are evaluated within an NJL model and they are found to be consistent with cooling phenomenology if a density dependent coupling constant is used.

The phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter under compact star constraints

The phase diagram of three-flavor quark matter under compact star constraints is investigated within a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Local color and electric charge neutrality is imposed for beta-equilibrated superconducting quark matter. The constituent quark masses and the diquark condensates are determined selfconsistently in the plane of temperature and quark chemical potential. Both strong and intermediate diquark coupling strengths are considered. We show that in both cases, gapless superconducting phases do not occur at temperatures relevant for compact star evolution, i.e., below T ~ 50 MeV. The stability and stucture of isothermal quark star configurations are evaluated. For intermediate coupling, quark stars are composed of a mixed phase of normal (NQ) and two-flavor superconducting (2SC) quark matter up to a maximum mass of 1.21 M_sun. At higher central densities, a phase transition to the three-flavor color flavor locked (CFL) phase occurs and the configurations become unstable. For the strong diquark coupling we find stable stars in the 2SC phase, with masses up to 1.326 M_sun. A second family of more compact configurations (twins) with a CFL quark matter core and a 2SC shell is also found to be stable. The twins have masses in the range 1.301 ... 1.326 M_sun. We consider also hot isothermal configurations at temperature T=40 MeV. When the hot maximum mass configuration cools down, due to emission of photons and neutrinos, a mass defect of 0.1 M_sun occurs and two final state configurations are possible.

How robust is a 2SC quark matter phase under compact star constraints?

We study the phase structure and equation of state for two-flavor quark matter at low temperature under compact star constraints within a nonlocal chiral quark model. We find that the occurence of a two-flavor color superconducting (2SC) phase is sensitive to variations of both the formfactor of the interaction and the ratio ηbetween the coupling constants in the diquark and the scalar meson channels. Our study suggests that for standard values of the coupling ratio 0.5<η<0.75 either the 2SC phase does not occur (Gaussian formfactor) or it exists only in a mixed phase with normal quark matter (NQ-2SC) with a volume fraction less than 20 - 40 %, occuring at high baryon chemical potentials μ_B >1200 MeV and most likely not relevant for compact stars. We also present the relevant region of the phase diagram for compact star applications and obtain that no gapless 2SC occurs at low temperatures.

Exploring the QCD phase diagram with compact stars

We investigate a nonlocal chiral quark model with separable 4-fermion interaction for the case of U(3) flavor symmetry and show that strange quark matter is unlikely to occur in a large enough volume of a compact star to entail remarkable observational consequences. The phase diagram in the two-flavor sector of such model has a critical end point of the line of first order chiral/deconfinement phase transitions on which a triple point marks the junction with the critical line for second order phase transitions to two-flavor color superconductivity (2SC) below T~80 MeV. Stable hybrid star configurations with large quark matter core in a color superconducting phase can exist. A consistent cooling phenomenology requires that all quark species be gapped, the minimal pairing gap of the order of 10 - 100 keV.

Cooling delay for protoquark stars due to neutrino trapping

The influence of neutrino trapping (NT) on the early cooling evolution of hot proto quark stars (PQS) with initial temperatures in the range T ~ 40 MeV is studied. Within a simplified model for the neutrino transport it is shown that the time for reaching neutrino opacity temperature of T_{opac} ~ 1 MeV is about 10 sec. This is an order of magnitude larger than without NT and of the same order as the duration long gamma ray bursts.

Cooling of neutron stars with color superconducting quark cores

We show that within a recently developed nonlocal, chiral quark model the critical densities for a phase transition to color superconducting quark matter under neutron star conditions can be low enough that these phases occur in compact star configurations with masses below 1.4 M_sun. We study the cooling of these objects in isolation for different values of the gravitational mass and thus different composition and structure of the interior. Our equation of state allows for a 2SC phase with a large quark gap Delta ~ 100 MeV for u and d quarks of two colors, a normal quark matter phase and their coexistence in a mixed phase within the hybrid star interior. We argue that, if the phases with unpaired quarks were allowed, the corresponding hybrid stars would cool too fast to describe the neutron star cooling data existing by today. We incorporate other attractive channels permitting a weak pairing of the residual quarks which remained unpaired in the 2SC phase and demonstrate that the model does not contradict the cooling data if the weak pairing gaps are of the order of 0.1 MeV.

Abnormal number of Nambu-Goldstone bosons in the color-asymmetric 2SC phase of an NJL-type model

We consider an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model including both (q \bar q)- and (qq)-interactions with two light-quark flavors in the presence of a single (quark density) chemical potential. In the color superconducting phase of the quark matter the color SU(3) symmetry is spontaneously broken down to SU(2). If the usual counting of Goldstone bosons would apply, five Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons corresponding to the five broken color generators should appear in the mass spectrum. Unlike that expectation, we find only three gapless diquark excitations of quark matter. One of them is an SU(2)-singlet, the remaining two form an SU(2)-(anti)doublet and have a quadratic dispersion law in the small momentum limit. These results are in agreement with the Nielsen-Chadha theorem, according to which NG-bosons in Lorentz-noninvariant systems, having a quadratic dispersion law, must be counted differently. The origin of the abnormal number of NG-bosons is shown to be related to a nonvanishing expectation value of the color charge operator Q_8 reflecting the lack of color neutrality of the ground state. Finally, by requiring color neutrality, two massive diquarks are argued to become massless, resulting in a normal number of five NG-bosons with usual linear dispersion laws.

Cooling of Neutron Stars. Hadronic Model

We study the cooling of isolated neutron stars. The main cooling regulators are introduced: EoS, thermal transport, heat capacity, neutrino and photon emissivity, superfluid nucleon gaps. Neutrino emissivity includes main processes. A strong impact of medium effects on the cooling rates is demonstrated. With taking into account of medium effects in reaction rates and in nucleon superfluid gaps modern experimental data can be well explained.

Hybrid stars with color superconductivity within a nonlocal chiral quark model

The equation of state for quark matter is derived for a nonlocal, chiral quark model within the mean field approximation. Special emphasis is on the occurrence of a diquark condensate which signals a phase transition to color superconductivity and its effects on the equation of state. We present a fit formula for the Bag pressure, which is density dependent in case when the quark matter is color superconducting. We calculate the quark star configurations by solving the Tolman- Oppenheimer- Volkoff equations and demonstrate the effects of diquark condensation on the stability of hybrid stars for different formfactors of the quark interaction.

Diquark condensation effects on hot quark star configurations

The equation of state for quark matter is derived for a nonlocal, chiral quark model within the mean field approximation. We investigate the effects of a variation of the formfactors of the interaction on the phase diagram of quark matter. Special emphasis is on the occurrence of a diquark condensate which signals a phase transition to color superconductivity and its effects on the equation of state under the condition of beta- equilibrium and charge neutrality. We calculate the quark star configurations by solving the Tolman- Oppenheimer- Volkoff equations and obtain for the transition from a hot, normal quark matter core of a protoneutron star to a cool diquark condensed one a release of binding energy of the order of Delta M c^2 ~ 10^{53} erg. We find that this energy could not serve as an engine for explosive phenomena since the phase transition is not first order. Contrary to naive expectations the mass defect increases when for a given temperature we neglect the possibility of diquark condensation.
