Energy spectrum of harmonically trapped two-component Fermi gases: Three- and Four-Particle Problem

Trapped two-component Fermi gases allow for the investigation of the so-called BCS-BEC crossover by tuning the interspecies atom-atom $s$-wave scattering length scattering $a^{(aa)}$ from attractive to repulsive, including vanishing and infinitely large values. Here, we numerically determine the energy spectrum of the equal-mass spin-balanced four-fermion system---the smallest few-particle system that exhibits BCS-BEC crossover-like behavior---as a function of $a^{(aa)}$ using the stochastic variational approach. For comparative purposes, we also treat the two- and three-particle systems. States with vanishing and finite total angular momentum as well as with natural and unnatural parity are considered. In addition, the energy spectrum of weakly-attractive and weakly-repulsive gases is characterized by employing a perturbative framework that utilizes hyperspherical coordinates. The hyperspherical coordinate approach allows for the straightforward assignment of quantum numbers and furthermore provides great insights into the strongly-interacting unitary regime.

Tuning the structural and dynamical properties of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate: Ripples and instability islands

It is now well established that the stability of aligned dipolar Bose gases can be tuned by varying the aspect ratio of the external harmonic confinement. This paper extends this idea and demonstrates that a Gaussian barrier along the strong confinement direction can be employed to tune both the structural properties and the dynamical stability of an oblate dipolar Bose gas aligned along the strong confinement direction. In particular, our theoretical mean-field analysis predicts the existence of instability islands immersed in otherwise stable regions of the phase diagram. Dynamical studies indicate that these instability islands, which can be probed experimentally with present-day technology, are associated with the going soft of a Bogoliubov--de Gennes excitation frequency with radial breathing mode character. Furthermore, we find dynamically stable ground state densities with ripple-like oscillations along the radial direction. These structured ground states exist in the vicinity of a dynamical radial roton-like instability.

Aligned dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential: From cigar-shaped to pancake-shaped

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), which is characterized by long-range and anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions and vanishing s-wave scattering length, in a double-well potential. The properties of this system are investigated as functions of the height of the barrier that splits the harmonic trap into two halves, the number of particles (or dipole-dipole strength) and the aspect ratio $λ$, which is defined as the ratio between the axial and longitudinal trapping frequencies $ω_z$ and $ω_ρ$. The phase diagram is determined by analyzing the stationary mean-field solutions. Three distinct regions are found: a region where the energetically lowest lying stationary solution is symmetric, a region where the energetically lowest lying stationary solution is located asymmetrically in one of the wells, and a region where the system is mechanically unstable. For sufficiently large aspect ratio $λ$ and sufficiently high barrier height, the system consists of two connected quasi-two-dimensional sheets with density profiles whose maxima are located either at $ρ=0$ or away from $ρ=0$. The stability of the stationary solutions is investigated by analyzing the Bogoliubov de Gennes excitation spectrum and the dynamical response to small perturbations. These studies reveal unique oscillation frequencies and distinct collapse mechanisms. The results derived within the mean-field framework are complemented by an analysis based on a two-mode model.

Illustration of universal relations for trapped four-fermion system with arbitrary s-wave scattering length

A two-component four-fermion system with equal masses, interspecies s-wave scattering length a and vanishing intraspecies interactions under external spherically symmetric harmonic confinement is considered. Using a correlated Gaussian basis set expansion approach, we determine the energies and various structural properties of the energetically lowest-lying gas-like state throughout the crossover for various ranges of the underlying two-body potential. Extrapolating to the zero-range limit, our numerical results show explicitly that the total energy, the trap energy as well as certain aspects of the pair distribution function and of the momentum distribution are related through the so-called integrated contact intensity I(a). Furthermore, it is shown explicitly that the total energy and the trap energy are related through a generalized virial theorem that accounts for a non-zero range.

Excitation spectrum and effective interactions of highly-elongated Fermi gas

Full 3D calculations of small two-component Fermi gases under highly-elongated confinement, in which unlike fermions interact through short-range potentials with variable atom-atom s-wave scattering length, are performed using the correlated Gaussian approach. In addition, microscopic 1D calculations are performed for effective "atomic" and "molecular" 1D model Hamiltonian. Comparisons of the 3D and 1D energies and excitation frequencies establish the validity regimes of the effective 1D Hamiltonian. Our numerical results for three- and four-particle systems suggest that the effective 1D atom-dimer and dimer-dimer interactions are to a good approximation determined by simple analytical expressions. Implications for the description of quasi-1D Fermi gases within strict 1D frameworks are discussed.

Low-energy resonances and bound states of aligned bosonic and fermionic dipoles

The low-energy scattering properties of two aligned identical bosonic and identical fermionic dipoles are analyzed. Generalized scattering lengths are determined as functions of the dipole moment and the scattering energy. Near resonance, where a new bound state is being pulled in, all non-vanishing generalized scattering lengths diverge, with the $a_{00}$ and $a_{11}$ scattering lengths being dominant for identical bosons and identical fermions, respectively, near both broad and narrow resonances. Implications for the energy spectrum and the eigenfunctions of trapped two-dipole systems and for pseudo-potential treatments are discussed.

The Trapped Polarized Fermi Gas at Unitarity

We consider population-imbalanced two-component Fermi gases under external harmonic confinement interacting through short-range two-body potentials with diverging s-wave scattering length. Using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method, the energies of the "normal state" are determined as functions of the population-imbalance and the number of particles. The energies of the trapped system follow, to a good approximation, a universal curve even for fairly small systems. A simple parameterization of the universal curve is presented and related to the equation of state of the bulk system.

Small mass- and trap-imbalanced two-component Fermi systems

Motivated by the prospect of optical lattice experiments with two-component Fermi gases consisting of different atomic species such as Li and K, we calculate the energies for N fermions under harmonic confinement as a function of the mass- and trap-imbalance, i.e., as a function of the ratio between the masses and frequencies of species one and two, using microscopic approaches. Our energies for N=2 through 6 can be used to determine the energetically most favorable configuration for a given number of atoms per species of a deep lattice in which each lattice site is approximately harmonic and in which tunneling between neighboring sites can be neglected. Furthermore, our energies determine one of the input parameters, namely the onsite interaction strength, of the corresponding lattice Hamiltonian. We also determine and interpret the excitation gap for unequal-mass systems with up to N=13 atoms for equal oscillator lengths.

Stability of Inhomogeneous Multi-Component Fermi Gases

Two-component equal-mass Fermi gases, in which unlike atoms interact through a short-range two-body potential and like atoms do not interact, are stable even when the interspecies s-wave scattering length becomes infinitely large. Solving the many-body Schroedinger equation within a hyperspherical framework and by Monte Carlo techniques, this paper investigates how the properties of trapped two-component gases change if a third or fourth component are added. If all interspecies scattering lengths are equal and negative, our calculations suggest that both three- and four-component Fermi gases become unstable for a certain critical set of parameters. The relevant length scale associated with the collapse is set by the interspecies scattering length and we argue that the collapse is, similar to the collapse of an attractive trapped Bose gas, a many-body phenomenon. Furthermore, we consider a three-component Fermi gas in which two interspecies scattering lengths are negative while the other interspecies scattering length is zero. In this case, the stability of the Fermi system is predicted to depend appreciably on the range of the underlying two-body potential. We find parameter combinations for which the system appears to become unstable for a finite negative scattering length and parameter combinations for which the system appears to be made up of weakly-bound trimers that consist of one fermion of each species.

Energetics and Structural Properties of Trapped Two-Component Fermi Gases

Using two different numerical methods, we study the behavior of two-component Fermi gases interacting through short-range s-wave interactions in a harmonic trap. A correlated Gaussian basis-set expansion technique is used to determine the energies and structural properties, i.e., the radial one-body densities and pair distribution functions, for small systems with either even or odd $N$, as functions of the s-wave scattering length and the mass ratio $κ$ of the two species. Particular emphasis is put on a discussion of the angular momentum of the system in the BEC-BCS crossover regime. At unitarity, the excitation spectrum of the four-particle system with total angular momentum L=0 is calculated as a function of the mass ratio $κ$. The results are analyzed from a hyperspherical perspective, which offers new insights into the problem. Additionally, fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo calculations are performed for equal-mass Fermi gases with up to N=30 atoms. We focus on the odd-even oscillations of the ground state energy of the equal-mass unitary system having up to N=30 particles, which are related to the excitation gap of the system. Furthermore, we present a detailed analysis of the structural properties of these systems.

Dilute Bose gases interacting via power-law potentials

Neutral atoms interact through a van der Waals potential which asymptotically falls off as r^{-6}. In ultracold gases, this interaction can be described to a good approximation by the atom-atom scattering length. However, corrections arise that depend on the characteristic length of the van der Waals potential. We parameterize these corrections by analyzing the energies of two- and few-atom systems under external harmonic confinement, obtained by numerically and analytically solving the Schrodinger equation. We generalize our results to particles interacting through a longer-ranged potential which asymptotically falls off as r^{-4}.

Universal properties of a trapped two-component Fermi gas at unitarity

We treat the trapped two-component Fermi system, in which unlike fermions interact through a two-body short-range potential having no bound state but an infinite scattering length. By accurately solving the Schroedinger equation for up to N=6 fermions, we show that no many-body bound states exist other than those bound by the trapping potential, and we demonstrate unique universal properties of the system: Certain excitation frequencies are separated by $2\hbarω$, the wavefunctions agree with analytical predictions and a virial theorem is fulfilled. Further calculations up to N=30 determine the excitation gap, an experimentally accessible universal quantity, and it agrees with recent predictions based on a density functional approach.

BEC-BCS Crossover of a Trapped Two-Component Fermi Gas with Unequal Masses

We determine the energetically lowest lying states in the BEC-BCS crossover regime of s-wave interacting two-component Fermi gases under harmonic confinement by solving the many-body Schrodinger equation using two distinct approaches. Essentially exact basis set expansion techniques are applied to determine the energy spectrum of systems with N=4 fermions. Fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo methods are applied to systems with up to N=20 fermions, and a discussion of different guiding functions used in the Monte Carlo approach to impose the proper symmetry of the fermionic system is presented. The energies are calculated as a function of the s-wave scattering length a_s for N=2-20 fermions and different mass ratios κof the two species. On the BEC and BCS sides, our energies agree with analytically-determined first-order correction terms. We extract the scattering length and the effective range of the dimer-dimer system up to κ= 20. Our energies for the strongly-interacting trapped system in the unitarity regime show no shell structure, and are well described by a simple expression, whose functional form can be derived using the local density approximation, with one or two parameters. The universal parameter ξfor the trapped system for various κis determined, and comparisons with results for the homogeneous system are presented.

Equation of state of atomic systems beyond s-wave determined by the lowest order constrained variational method: Large scattering length limit

Dilute Fermi systems with large s-wave scattering length a_s exhibit universal properties if the interparticle spacing r_o greatly exceeds the range of the underlying two-body interaction potential. In this regime, r_o is the only relevant length scale and observables such as the energy per particle depend only on r_o (or, equivalently, the energy E_{FG} of the free Fermi gas). This paper investigates Bose and Fermi systems with non-vanishing angular momentum l using the lowest order constrained variational method. We focus on the regime where the generalized scattering length becomes large and determine the relevant length scales. For Bose gases with large generalized scattering lengths, we obtain simple expressions for the energy per particle in terms of a l-dependent length scale ξ_l, which depends on the range of the underlying two-body potential and the average interparticle spacing. We discuss possible implications for dilute two-component Fermi systems with finite l. Furthermore, we determine the equation of state of liquid and gaseous bosonic helium.

Pseudo-potential treatment of two aligned dipoles under external harmonic confinement

Dipolar Bose and Fermi gases, which are currently being studied extensively experimentally and theoretically, interact through anisotropic, long-range potentials. Here, we replace the long-range potential by a zero-range pseudo-potential that simplifies the theoretical treatment of two dipolar particles in a harmonic trap. Our zero-range pseudo-potential description reproduces the energy spectrum of two dipoles interacting through a shape-dependent potential under external confinement very well, provided that sufficiently many partial waves are included, and readily leads to a classification scheme of the energy spectrum in terms of approximate angular momentum quantum numbers. The results may be directly relevant to the physics of dipolar gases loaded into optical lattices.

Energetics and structural properties of three-dimensional bosonic clusters near threshold

We treat three-dimensional bosonic clusters wih up to N=40 atoms, interacting additively through two-body Van der Waals potentials, in the near-threshold regime. Our study inludes super-borromean systems with N atoms for which all subsystems are unbound. We determine the energetics and structural properties as the expectation value of the interparticle distance as a function of the coupling strength. It has been shown that the coupling strength g*(N), for which the N-body systems becomes unbound, is bounded by the coupling constant g*(N-1) for which the next smaller system with N-1 atoms becomes unbound, i.e., g*(N) >= (N-1)/Ng*(N-1). By fitting our numerically determined ground state energies to a simple functional form with three fitting parameters, we determine the relationship between g*(N) and g*(N-1). Our trimer and tetramer energies fall on the so-called Tjon line, which has been studied in nuclear physics. We confirm the existence of generalized Tjon lines for larger clusters. Signatures of the universal behavior of weakly-bound three-dimensional clusters can possibly be observed in ultracold Bose gases.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with dipole-dependent scattering length

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate of polar molecules in a harmonic trap, where the effective dipole may be tuned by an external field. We demonstrate that taking into account the dependence of the scattering length on the dipole moment is essential to reproducing the correct energies and for predicting the stability of the condensate. We do this by comparing Gross-Pitaevskii calculations with diffusion Monte Carlo calculations. We find very good agreement between the results obtained by these two approaches once the dipole dependence of the scattering length is taken into account. We also examine the behavior of the condensate in non-isotropic traps.

Dipolar Bose gases: Many-body versus mean-field description

We characterize zero-temperature dipolar Bose gases under external spherical confinement as a function of the dipole strength using the essentially exact many-body diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) technique. We show that the DMC energies are reproduced accurately within a mean-field framework if the variation of the s-wave scattering length with the dipole strength is accounted for properly. Our calculations suggest stability diagrams and collapse mechanisms of dipolar Bose gases that differ significantly from those previously proposed in the literature.
