Coupled-channel pseudo-potential description of the Feshbach resonance in two dimensions

We derive pseudo-potentials that describe the scattering between two particles in two spatial dimensions for any partial wave m, whose scattering strength is parameterized in terms of the m-dependent phase shift. Using our m=0 pseudo-potential, we develop a coupled channel model with 2D zero-range interactions, which describes the two-body physics across a Feshbach resonance. Our model predicts the scattering length, the binding energy and the "closed channel molecular fraction" of two particles; these observables can be measured in experiments on ultracold quasi-2D atomic Bose and Fermi gases with present-day technology.

Interaction-Induced Localization of an Impurity in a Trapped Bose Condensate

We study the ground state properties of a trapped Bose condensate with a neutral impurity. By varying the strength of the attractive atom-impurity interactions the degree of localization of the impurity at the trap center can be controlled. As the impurity becomes more strongly localized the peak condensate density, which can be monitored experimentally, grows markedly. For strong enough attraction, the impurity can make the condensate unstable by strongly deforming the atom density in the neighborhood of the impurity. This "collapse" can possibly be investigated in bosenova-type experiments.

Threshold behavior of bosonic two-dimensional few-body systems

Bosonic two-dimensional self-bound clusters consisting of $N$ atoms interacting through additive van der Waals potentials become unbound at a critical mass m*(N); m*(N) has been predicted to be independent of the size of the system. Furthermore, it has been predicted that the ground state energy E(N) of the N-atom system varies exponentially as the atomic mass approaches m*. This paper reports accurate numerical many-body calculations that allow these predictions to be tested. We confirm the existence of a universal critical mass m*, and show that the near-threshold behavior can only be described properly if a previously neglected term is included. We comment on the universality of the energy ratio E(N+1)/E(N) near threshold.

Microscopic Superfluidity in Bose Gases: From 3D to 1D

The superfluid fraction of ideal and interacting inhomogeneous Bose gases with varying asymmetry is investigated at finite temperature using well-known properties of the harmonic oscillator as well as the essentially exact microscopic path integral Monte Carlo method. We find that the superfluid fraction (i) is essentially independent of the interaction strength for all temperatures considered, (ii) changes profoundly as the effective dimensionality is varied from three- to one-dimensional, (iii) is approximately equal to the condensate fraction N0/N for spherical Bose gases, and (iv) deviates dramatically from N0/N for highly-elongated Bose gases.

Feshbach Resonance Cooling of Trapped Atom Pairs

Spectroscopic studies of few-body systems at ultracold temperatures provide valuable information that often cannot be extracted in a hot environment. Considering a pair of atoms, we propose a cooling mechanism that makes use of a scattering Feshbach resonance. Application of a series of time-dependent magnetic field ramps results in the situation in which either zero, one, or two atoms remain trapped. If two atoms remain in the trap after the field ramps are completed, then they have been cooled. Application of the proposed cooling mechanism to optical traps or lattices is considered.

Non-divergent pseudo-potential treatment of spin-polarized fermions under 1D and 3D harmonic confinement

Atom-atom scattering of bosonic one-dimensional (1D) atoms has been modeled successfully using a zero-range delta-function potential, while that of bosonic 3D atoms has been modeled successfully using Fermi-Huang's regularized s-wave pseudo-potential. Here, we derive the eigenenergies of two spin-polarized 1D fermions under external harmonic confinement interacting through a zero-range potential, which only acts on odd-parity wave functions, analytically. We also present a divergent-free zero-range potential treatment of two spin-polarized 3D fermions under harmonic confinement. Our pseudo-potential treatments are verified through numerical calculations for short-range model potentials.

Interacting fermions in quasi-one-dimensional harmonic traps

Quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) two-component Fermi gases with effectively attractive and repulsive interactions are characterized for arbitrary interaction strength. The ground-state properties of the gas confined in highly elongated harmonic traps are determined within the local density approximation. For strong attractive effective interactions the existence of a molecular Tonks-Girardeau gas is predicted. The frequency of the lowest breathing mode is calculated as a function of the coupling strength for both attractive and repulsive interactions.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases

We study the behavior of quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1d) Bose gases by Monte Carlo techniques, i.e., by the variational Monte Carlo, the diffusion Monte Carlo, and the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo technique. Our calculations confirm and extend our results of an earlier study [Astrakharchik et al., cond-mat/0308585]. We find that a quasi-1d Bose gas i) is well described by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions and renormalized coupling constant; ii) reaches the Tonks-Girardeau regime for a critical value of the 3d scattering length a_3d; iii) enters a unitary regime for |a_3d| -> infinity, where the properties of the gas are independent of a_3d and are similar to those of a 1d gas of hard-rods; and iv) becomes unstable against cluster formation for a critical value of the 1d gas parameter. The accuracy and implications of our results are discussed in detail.

Quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases with large scattering length

Bose gases confined in highly-elongated harmonic traps are investigated over a wide range of interaction strengths using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We find that the properties of a Bose gas under tight transverse confinement are well reproduced by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions. We point out the existence of a unitary regime, where the properties of the quasi-1d Bose gas become independent of the actual value of the 3d scattering length. In this unitary regime, the energy of the system is well described by a hard rod equation of state. We investigate the stability of quasi-1d Bose gases with positive and negative 3d scattering length.

Tuning the interactions of spin-polarized fermions using quasi-one-dimensional confinement

The behavior of ultracold atomic gases depends crucially on the two-body scattering properties of these systems. We develop a multichannel scattering theory for atom-atom collisions in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) geometries such as atomic waveguides or highly elongated traps. We apply our general framework to the low energy scattering of two spin-polarized fermions and show that tightly-confined fermions have infinitely strong interactions at a particular value of the 3D, free-space p-wave scattering volume. Moreover, we describe a mapping of this strongly interacting system of two quasi-1D fermions to a weakly interacting system of two 1D bosons.

A Two-Atom Picture of Coherent Atom-Molecule Quantum Beats

A simple two-atom model is shown to describe a Bose-Einstein condensate of alkali atoms subjected to external magnetic field ramps near a Feshbach resonance. The implications uncovered for two atoms in a trap can be applied at least approximately to a many-atom condensate. A connection to observations is accomplished by scaling the trap frequency to achieve a density comparable to that of the experiments, which yields the fraction of atom pairs in the gas that become molecules. A sudden approximation is used to model the external magnetic field ramps in the vicinity of a two-body Feshbach resonance. The results of this model are compared with recent experimental observations of Donley et al. [1].

Formation of atomic tritium clusters and condensates

We present an extensive study of the static and dynamic properties of systems of spin-polarized tritium atoms. In particular, we calculate the two-body |F,m_F>=|0,0> s-wave scattering length and show that it can be manipulated via a Feshbach resonance at a field strength of about 870G. Such a resonance might be exploited to make and control a Bose-Einstein condensate of tritium in the |0,0> state. It is further shown that the quartet tritium trimer is the only bound hydrogen isotope and that its single vibrational bound state is a Borromean state. The ground state properties of larger spin-polarized tritium clusters are also presented and compared with those of helium clusters.

Fermionization of a bosonic gas under highly-elongated confinement: A diffusion quantum Monte Carlo study

The diffusion quantum Monte Carlo technique is used to solve the many-body Schroedinger equation fully quantum mechanically and nonperturbatively for bosonic atomic gases in cigar-shaped confining potentials. By varying the aspect ratio of the confining potential from 1 (spherical trap) to 10000 (highly elongated trap), we characterize the transition from the three-dimensional regime to the (quasi-)one-dimensional regime. Our results confirm that the bosonic gas undergoes ``fermionization'' for large aspect ratios. Importantly, many-body correlations are included explicitly in our approach.

Three particles in an external trap: Nature of the complete J=0 spectrum

Three bosonic, spin-polarized atoms in a spherical oscillator potential constitutes the simplest nontrivial Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The present paper develops the tools needed to understand the nature of the complete J=0 energy spectrum for this prototype system, assuming a sum of two-body potentials. The resulting spectrum is calculated as a function of the two-body scattering length a_sc, which documents the evolution of certain many-body levels that evolve from BEC-type to molecular-type as the scattering length is decreased. Implications for the behavior of the condensate excited-state spectrum and for condensate formation and decay are elucidated. The energy levels evolve smoothly, even through the regime where the number of two-body bound states N_b increases by 1, and a_{sc} switches from -infinity to infinity. We point out the possibility of suppressing three-body recombination by tuning the two-body scattering length to values that are larger than the size of the condensate ground state. Comparisons with mean-field treatments are presented.

Quantum corrections to the ground state energy of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate: A diffusion Monte Carlo calculation

The diffusion Monte Carlo method is applied to describe a trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature, fully quantum mechanically and nonperturbatively. For low densities, $n(0)a^3 \le 2 \cdot 10^{-3}$ [n(0): peak density, a: s-wave scattering length], our calculations confirm that the exact ground state energy for a sum of two-body interactions depends on only the atomic physics parameter a, and no other details of the two-body model potential. Corrections to the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii energy range from being essentially negligible to about 20% for N=2-50 particles in the trap with positive s-wave scattering length a=100-10000 a.u.. Our numerical calculations confirm that inclusion of an additional effective potential term in the mean-field equation, which accounts for quantum fluctuations [see e.g. E. Braaten and A. Nieto, Phys. Rev. B 56}, 14745 (1997)], leads to a greatly improved description of trapped Bose gases.
