Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electronic structure of Cu$_2$O

A resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the electronic structure of the semiconductor cuprous oxide, $\rm Cu_2O$, is reported. When the incident x-ray energy is tuned to the Cu K-absorption edge, large enhancements of the spectral features corresponding to the electronic transitions between the valence band and the conduction band are observed. A feature at 6.5 eV can be well described by an interband transition from occupied states of mostly Cu 3d charactor to unoccupied states with mixed 3d, 4s and 2p character. In addition, an insulating band gap is observed, and the momentum dependence of the lower bound is measured along the $Γ-R$ direction. This is found to be in good agreement with the valence band dispersion measured with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Implicit spatial averaging in inversion of inelastic x-ray scattering data

Inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) now a widely used technique for studying the dynamics of electrons in condensed matter. We previously posed a solution to the phase problem for IXS [P. Abbamonte, et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, 237401 (2004)], that allows explicit reconstruction of the density propagator of a system. The propagator represents, physically, the response of the system to an idealized, point perturbation, so provides direct, real-time images of electron motion with attosecond time resolution and $Å$-scale spatial resolution. Here we show that the images generated by our procedure, as it was originally posed, are spatial averages over all source locations. Within an idealized, atomic-like model, we show that in most cases a simple relationship to the complete, un-averaged response can still be determined. We illustrate this concept for recent IXS measurements of single crystal graphite.

Comparison of Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Spectra and Dielectric Loss Functions in Copper Oxides

We report empirical comparisons of Cu K-edge indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, taken at the Brillouin zone center, with optical dielectric loss functions measured in a number of copper oxides. The RIXS data are obtained for Bi$_2$CuO$_4$, CuGeO$_3$, Sr$_2$Cu$_3$O$_4$Cl$_2$, La$_2$CuO$_4$, and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, and analyzed by considering both incident and scattered photon resonances. An incident-energy-independent response function is then extracted. The dielectric loss functions, measured with spectroscopic ellipsometry, agree well with this RIXS response, especially in Bi$_2$CuO$_4$ and CuGeO$_3$.

Magnetic field dependence of charge stripe order in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x~1/8)

We have carried out a detailed investigation of the magnetic field dependence of charge ordering in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x~1/8) utilizing high-resolution x-ray scattering. We find that the charge order correlation length increases as the magnetic field greater than ~5T is applied in the superconducting phase (T=2K). The observed unusual field dependence of the charge order correlation length suggests that the static charge stripe order competes with the superconducting ground state in this sample.

Observation of a 500meV Collective Mode in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$

Utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we report a previously unobserved mode in the excitation spectrum of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at 500 meV. The mode is peaked around the ($π$,0) point in reciprocal space and is observed to soften, and broaden, away from this point. Samples with x=0, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.17 were studied. The new mode is found to be rapidly suppressed with increasing Sr content and is absent at $x$=0.17, where it is replaced by a continuum of excitations. The peak is only observed when the incident x-ray polarization is normal to the CuO planes and is also present in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. We suggest possible explanations for this excitation.

Charge-transfer exciton in La2CuO4 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of La2CuO4. A number of spectral features are identified that were not clearly visible in earlier lower-resolution data. The momentum dependence of the spectral weight and the dispersion of the lowest energy excitation across the insulating gap have been measured in detail. The temperature dependence of the spectral features was also examined. The observed charge transfer edge shift, along with the low dispersion of the first charge transfer excitation are attributed to the lattice motion being coupled to the electronic system. In addition, we observe a dispersionless feature at 1.8 eV, which is associated with a d-d crystal field excitation.

Properties of charge density waves in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_{x}$CuO$_4$

We report a comprehensive x-ray scattering study of charge density wave (stripe) ordering in $\rm La_{2-x}Ba_xCuO_4 (x \approx 1/8)$, for which the superconducting $T_c$ is greatly suppressed. Strong superlattice reflections corresponding to static ordering of charge stripes were observed in this sample. The structural modulation at the lowest temperature was deduced based on the intensity of over 70 unique superlattice positions surveyed. We found that the charge order in this sample is described with one-dimensional charge density waves, which have incommensurate wave-vectors (0.23, 0, 0.5) and (0, 0.23, 0.5) respectively on neighboring $\rm CuO_2$ planes. The structural modulation due to the charge density wave order is simply sinusoidal, and no higher harmonics were observed. Just below the structural transition temperature, short-range charge density wave correlation appears, which develops into a large scale charge ordering around 40 K, close to the spin density wave ordering temperature. However, this charge ordering fails to grow into a true long range order, and its correlation length saturates at $\sim 230Å$, and slightly decreases below about 15 K, which may be due to the onset of two-dimensional superconductivity.

Effect of Number of Walls on Plasmon Behavior in Carbon Nanotubes

We investigate the physical parameters controlling the low energy screening in carbon nanotubes via electron energy loss spectroscopy and inelastic x-ray scattering. Two plasmon-like features are observed, one near 9 eV (the so-called pi plasmon) and one near 20 eV (the so-called pi+sigma plasmon). At large nanotube diameters, the pi+sigma plasmon energies are found to depend exclusively on the number of walls and not on the radius or chiral vector. The observed shift indicates a change in the strength of the screening and in the effective interaction at inter-atomic distances, and thus this result suggests a mechanism for tuning the properties of the nanotube.

Incident-energy and polarization dependent RIXS study of La2CuO4

We present a detailed Cu K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the Mott insulator La2CuO4 in the 1-7 eV energy transfer range. As initially found for the high-temperature superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d, the spectra exhibit a multiplet of weakly-dispersive electron-hole excitations, which are revealed by utilizing the subtle dependence of the cross section on the incident photon energy. The close similarity between the fine structures for in-plane and out-of-plane polarizations is indicative of the central role played by the 1s core hole in inducing charge excitations within the CuO2 planes. On the other hand, we observe a polarization dependence of the spectral weight, and careful analysis reveals two separate features near 2 eV that may be related to different charge-transfer processes. The polarization dependence indicates that the 4p electrons contribute significantly to the RIXS cross section. Third-order perturbation arguments and a shake-up of valence excitations are then applied to account for the final-energy resonance in the spectra. As an alternative scenario, we discuss fluorescence-like emission processes due to 1s -> 4p transitions into a narrow continuum 4p band.

Charge-Transfer Excitations in the Model Superconductor HgBa$_2$CuO$_{\bf 4+δ}$

We report a Cu $K$-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge-transfer excitations in the 2-8 eV range in the structurally simple compound HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ at optimal doping ($T_{\rm c} = 96.5 $ K). The spectra exhibit a significant dependence on the incident photon energy which we carefully utilize to resolve a multiplet of weakly-dispersive ($ < 0.5$ eV) electron-hole excitations, including a mode at 2 eV. The observation of this 2 eV excitation suggests the existence of a charge-transfer pseudogap deep in the superconducting phase. Quite generally, our data demonstrate the importance of exploring the incident photon energy dependence of the RIXS cross section.

Doping dependence of charge-transfer excitations in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of the doping dependence of charge-transfer excitations in $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$. The mome ntum dependence of these charge excitations are studied over the whole Brillouin zone in underdoped (x=0.05) and optimally doped (x=0.17) samples, and compared with that of the undoped (x=0) sample. We observe a large change in the RIXS spectra between the x=0 and x=0.17 sample, while the RIXS spectra of the x=0.05 sample are similar to that of the x=0 sample. The most prominent effect of doped-holes on the charge excitation spectra is the appearance of a continuum of intensity, which exhibits a strong momentum-dependence below 2 eV. For the x=0.17 sample, some of the spectral weight from the lowest-lying charge-transfer excitation of the undoped compound is transferred to the continuum intensity below the gap, in agreement with earlier optical studies. However, the higher energy charge-transfer excitation carries significant spectral weight even for the x=0.17 sample. The doping dependence of the dispersion of this charge-transfer excitation is also discussed and compared with recent theoretical calculations.

Temperature dependent d-d excitations in manganites probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We report the observation of temperature dependent electronic excitations in various manganites utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn K-edge. Excitations were observed between 1.5 and 16 eV with temperature dependence found as high as 10 eV. The change in spectral weight between 1.5 and 5 eV was found to be related to the magnetic order and independent of the conductivity. On the basis of LDA+U and Wannier function calculations, this dependence is associated with intersite d-d excitations. Finally, the connection between the RIXS cross-section and the loss function is addressed.

Molecular orbital excitations in cuprates

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering studies of electronic excitations in a wide variety of cuprate compounds. Specifically, we focus on the charge-transfer type excitation of an electron from a bonding molecular orbital to an antibonding molecular orbital in a copper oxygen plaquette. Both the excitation energy and the amount of dispersion are found to increase significantly as the copper oxygen bond-length is reduced. We also find that the estimated bond-length dependence of the hopping integral t_pd is much stronger than that expected from tight-binding theory.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of holon-antiholon continuum in SrCuO2

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of charge excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator SrCuO2. We observe a continuum of low-energy excitations, in which a highly dispersive feature with a large sinusoidal dispersion (~1.1 eV) resides. We have also measured the optical conductivity, and studied the dynamic response of the extended Hubbard model with realistic parameters, using a dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. In contrast to earlier work, we do not find a long-lived exciton, but rather these results suggest that the excitation spectrum comprises a holon-antiholon continuum together with a broad resonance.

Resonant x-ray diffraction study of the magnetoresistant perovskite Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3

We report a x-ray resonant diffraction study of the perovskite Pr0.6Ca0.4MnO3. At the Mn K-edge, this technique is sensitive to details of the electronic structure of the Mn atoms. We discuss the resonant x-ray spectra measured above and below the charge and orbital ordering phase transition temperature (TCOO = 232 K), and present a detailed analysis of the energy and polarization dependence of the resonant scattering. The analysis confirms that the structural transition is a transition to an orbitally ordered phase in which inequivalent Mn atoms are ordered in a CE-type pattern. The Mn atoms differ mostly by their 3d orbital occupation. We find that the charge disproportionation is incomplete, 3d^{3.5-δ} and 3d^{3.5+δ} with δ\ll0.5 . A revised CE-type model is considered in which there are two Mn sublattices, each with partial e_{g} occupancy. One sublattice consists of Mn atoms with the 3x^{2}-r^{2} or 3y^{2}-r^{2} orbitals partially occupied, the other sublattice with the x^{2}-y^{2} orbital partially occupied.

Charge and orbital excitations in Li2CuO2

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of electronic excitations in Li_2CuO_2, an insulating compound comprised of ribbons of edge-sharing copper-oxygen chains. Three excitations, which show little dependence on momentum transfer, are observed in our measurements. The lowest energy excitation at ~2.1 eV is dispersionless and is attributed to a localized d-d orbital excitation. We also observe two excitations at ~5.4 eV and ~7.6 eV which we assign to charge-transfer excitations. These high-energy excitations are also dispersionless along the copper-oxygen chain direction. However, in each case we observe a small energy dispersion along the direction perpendicular to the copper-oxygen ribbons, suggesting a significant interchain coupling in this system. We also discuss the possible implications of ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor intrachain coupling on the charge excitation spectra.

Substrate-induced strain effects on Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films

We report the characterization of the crystal structure, low-temperature charge and orbital ordering, transport, and magnetization of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} films grown on LaAlO_{3}, NdGaO_{3}, and SrTiO_{3} substrates, which provide compressive (LaAlO_{3}) and tensile (NdGaO_{3} and SrTiO_{3}) strain. The films are observed to exhibit different crystallographic symmetries than the bulk material, and the low-temperature ordering is found to be more robust under compressive-- as opposed to tensile-- strain. In fact, bulk-like charge and orbital ordering is not observed in the film grown on NdGaO_{3}, which is the substrate that provides the least amount of nominal and measured, but tensile, strain. This result suggests the importance of the role played by the Mn--O--Mn bond angles in the formation of charge and orbital ordering at low temperatures. Finally, in the film grown on LaAlO_{3}, a connection between the lattice distortion associated with orbital ordering and the onset of antiferromagnetism is reported.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of charge excitations in La2CuO4

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of the dispersion relations of charge transfer excitations in insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$. These data reveal two peaks, both of which show two-dimensional characteristics. The lowest energy excitation has a gap energy of $\sim 2.2$ eV at the zone center, and a dispersion of $\sim 1$ eV. The spectral weight of this mode becomes dramatically smaller around ($π$, $π$). The second peak shows a smaller dispersion ($\sim 0.5$ eV) with a zone-center energy of $\sim 3.9$ eV. We argue that these are both highly dispersive exciton modes damped by the presence of the electron-hole continuum.
