Generation of macroscopic quantum-superposition states by linear coupling to a bath

We demonstrate through an exactly solvable model that collective coupling to any thermal bath induces effectively nonlinear couplings in a quantum many-body (multi-spin) system. The resulting evolution can drive an uncorrelated large-spin system with high probability into a macroscopic quantum-superposition state. We discuss possible experimental realizations.

Zeno and anti-Zeno polarization control of spin-ensembles by induced dephasing

We experimentally and theoretically demonstrate the purity (polarization) control of qubits entangled with multiple spins, using induced dephasing in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) setups to simulate repeated quantum measurements. We show that one may steer the qubit ensemble towards a quasi-equilibrium state of certain purity, by choosing suitable time intervals between dephasing operations. These results demonstrate that repeated dephasing at intervals associated with the anti-Zeno regime lead to ensemble purification, whereas those associated with the Zeno regime lead to ensemble mixing.

Non-Markovian control of qubit thermodynamics by frequent quantum measurements

We explore the effects of frequent, impulsive quantum nondemolition measurements of the energy of two-level systems (TLS), alias qubits, in contact with a thermal bath. The resulting entropy and temperature of both the system and the bath are found to be completely determined by the measurement rate, and unrelated to what is expected by standard thermodynamical rules that hold for Markovian baths. These anomalies allow for very fast control of heating, cooling and state-purification (entropy reduction) of qubits, much sooner than their thermal equilibration time.

Quantum frustration of dissipation by a spin bath

We investigate the evolution of a central spin coupled to a spin bath without internal dynamics. We compare the cases where the bath couples to one or two components of the spin. It is found that the central spin dynamics is enhanced in the latter case, which may be interpreted as a frustration of dissipation. However, the quantum purity of the spin decays fast in both scenarios. We conclude that symmetric coupling of the bath to two orthogonal components of the spin inhibits dissipation but not decoherence.

Generation of entangled channels for perfect teleportation channels using multi-electron quantum dots

In this work we have proposed a scheme for generating $N$ qubit entangled states which can teleport an unknown state perfectly. By switching on the exchange interaction ($J$) between the qubits one can get the desired states periodically. A multi electron quantum dot can be a possible realization for generating such $N$ qubit states with high fidelity. In the limit of $N \to \infty$, there exists a unique time $t=\frac{1}{J}\cos^{-1}(-1/8)$ where the Hamiltonian dynamics gives the $N$ qubit state that can assist perfect teleportation. We have also discussed the effect of the nuclear spin environment on the fidelity of teleportation for a general $N$ qubit entangled channel.

Teleportation in the presence of common bath decoherence at the transmitting station

We investigate the effect of common bath decoherence on the qubits of Alice in the usual teleportation protocol. The system bath interaction is studied under the central spin model, where the qubits are coupled to the bath spins through isotropic Heisenberg interaction. We have given a more generalized representation of the protocol in terms of density matrices and calculated the average fidelity of the teleported state for different Bell state measurements performed by Alice. The common bath interaction differentiates the outcome of various Bell state measurements made by Alice. There will be a high fidelity teleportation for a singlet measurement made by Alice when both the qubits of Alice interact either ferromagnetically or antiferromagnetically with bath. In contrast if one of the Alice's qubits interact ferromagnetically and the other anti-ferromagnetically then measurement of Bell states belonging to the triplet sector will give better fidelity. We have also evaluated the average fidelity when Alice prefers non-maximally entangled states as her basis for measurement.

Controlled dynamics of qubits in the presence of decoherence

An exactly solvable model for the decoherence of one and two-qubit states interacting with a spin-bath, in the presence of a time-dependent magnetic field is studied. The magnetic field is static along $\hat{z}$ direction and oscillatory in the transverse plane. The transition probability and Rabi oscillations between the spin-states of a single qubit is shown to depend on the size of bath, the distribution of qubit-bath couplings and the initial bath polarization. In contrast to the fast Gaussian decay for short times, the polarization of the qubit shows an oscillatory power-law decay for long times. The loss of entanglement for the maximally entangled two-qubit states, can be controlled by tuning the frequency of the rotating field. The decay rates of entanglement and purity for all the Bell-states are same when the qubits are non-interacting, and different when they are interacting.

Decoherence of two-electron spin states in quantum dots

The time evolution of spin states of two electrons interacting with a nuclear spin bath in a quantum dot system is studied. The hyperfine interaction between the electrons and the nuclear spins is modeled by an isotropic Heisenberg interaction, and the interaction between the electron spins by Heisenberg exchange. Depending on the extent of the overlap between the spatial wave functions of the electrons, there are two physically different cases, namely the two qubits either interact with the same set of nuclear spins or they see different nuclear spin environment. In the two cases, the decoherence of the two-qubit state is studied analytically. We have identified a class of two-qubit states which have a rich dynamics when the exchange interaction between the qubits becomes large in comparison to the hyperfine interaction strengths. The decoherence time scale is determined as a function of the bath-spin distribution and the polarizations of the initial two-qubit state. States with large decoherence times are identified by performing a minimization over all the two-qubit pure states.

Spin Decoherence from Hamiltonian dynamics in Quantum Dots

The dynamics of a spin-1/2 particle coupled to a nuclear spin bath through an isotropic Heisenberg interaction is studied, as a model for the spin decoherence in quantum dots. The time-dependent polarization of the central spin is calculated as a function of the bath-spin distribution and the polarizations of the initial bath state. For short times, the polarization of the central spin shows a gaussian decay, and at later times it revives displaying nonmonotonic time dependence. The decoherence time scale dep ends on moments of the bath-spin distribuition, and also on the polarization strengths in various bath-spin channels. The bath polarizations have a tendency to increase the decoherence time scale. The effective dynamics of the central spin polarization is shown to be describ ed by a master equation with non-markovian features.

A redefinition of Concurrence and its generalisation to bosonic subsystems of N qubit systems

We refine the notion of concurrence in this paper by a redefinition of the concept. The new definition is simpler, computationally straight forward, and allows the concurrence to be directly read off from the state. It has all the positive features of the definiton given by Wootters over and above which it can discriminate between different systems to which the Wootters prescription would assign the same value. Finally, the definiton leads to a natural extension of the notion to multiqubit concurrence, which we illustrate with examples from quantum error correction codes.
