Magnetism in the Néel skyrmion host GaV$_4$S$_8$ under pressure

We present magnetization and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of Néel skyrmion-host GaV$_4$S$_8$ under the application of hydrostatic pressures up to $P=2.29$ GPa. Our results suggest that the magnetic phase diagram is altered with pressure via a reduction in the crossover temperature from the cycloidal (C) to ferromagnetic-like state with increasing $P$, such that, by 2.29 GPa, the C state appears to persist down to the lowest measured temperatures. With the aid of micromagnetic simulations, we propose that the driving mechanism behind this change is a reduction in the magnetic anisotropy of the system, and suggest that this could lead to an increase in stability of the skyrmion lattice.

μSR investigation of the Fe-doped Ca$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ polar metal

Ca$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ is a polar metal that belongs to the class of multiferroic magnetic materials. Here, tiny amounts of Fe doping in the Ru sites bring about dramatic changes in the electronic and magnetic properties and generate a complex H-T phase diagram. To date, not much is known about the ground state of such a system in the absence of magnetic field. By performing muon-spin spectroscopy ($μ$SR) measurements in 5% Fe-doped Ca$_{3}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals, we investigate its electronic properties at a local level. Transverse-field $μ$SR results indicate a very sharp normal-to-antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 79.7(1) K, with a width of only 1 K. Zero-field $μ$SR measurements in the magnetically ordered state allow us to determine the local fields B$_{i}$ at the muon implantation sites. By symmetry, muons stopping close to the RuO$_{2}$ planes detect only the weak nuclear dipolar fields, while those stopping next to apical oxygens sense magnetic fields as high as 150 mT. In remarkable agreement with the nominal Fe-doping, a $\sim$ 6% minority of the these muons feel slightly lower fields, reflecting a local magnetic frustration induced by iron ions. Finally, B$_{i}$ shows no significant changes across the metal-to-insulator transition, close to 40 K. We ascribe this surprising lack of sensitivity to the presence of crystal twinning.

Tunable nodal kagome superconductivity in charge ordered RbV3Sb5

Unconventional superconductors often feature competing orders, small superfluid density, and nodal electronic pairing. While unusual superconductivity has been proposed in the kagome metals AV3Sb5, key spectroscopic evidence has remained elusive. Here we utilize pressure-tuned (up to 1.85 GPa) and ultra-low temperature (down to 18 mK) muon spin spectroscopy to uncover the unconventional nature of superconductivity in RbV3Sb5. At ambient pressure, we detect an enhancement of the width of the internal magnetic field distribution sensed by the muon ensemble, indicative of time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order. Remarkably, the superconducting state displays nodal energy gap and a reduced superfluid density, which can be attributed to the competition with the novel charge order. Upon applying pressure, the charge-order transitions are suppressed, the superfluid density increases, and the superconducting state progressively evolves from nodal to nodeless. Once charge order is eliminated, we find a superconducting pairing state that is not only fully gapped, but also spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry. Our results point to unprecedented tunable nodal kagome superconductivity competing with time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order and offer unique insights into the nature of the pairing state.

Time-reversal symmetry-breaking charge order in a kagome superconductor

The kagome lattice, the most prominent structural motif in quantum physics, benefits from inherent nontrivial geometry to host diverse quantum phases, ranging from spin-liquid phases, topological matter to intertwined orders, and most rarely unconventional superconductivity. Recently, charge sensitive probes have suggested that the kagome superconductors AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) (A = K, Rb, Cs) exhibit unconventional chiral charge order, which is analogous to the long-sought-after quantum order in the Haldane model or Varma model. However, direct evidence for the time-reversal symmetry-breaking of the charge order remains elusive. Here we utilize muon spin relaxation to probe the kagome charge order and superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place just below the charge ordering temperature and persists into the superconducting state. Remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. We further show the multigap nature of superconductivity in KV_3Sb_5 and that the T_c/lambda_{ab}^{-2} ratio is comparable to those of unconventional high-temperature superconductors. Our results point to time-reversal symmetry breaking charge order intertwining with unconventional superconductivity in the correlated kagome lattice.

Intriguing magnetism of the topological kagome magnet TbMn_6Sn_6

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and material science. Along these lines, several kagome magnets have appeared as the most promising platforms. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the transition-metal-based kagome magnet TbMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ using muon spin rotation, combined with local field analysis and neutron diffraction. Our results show that the system exhibits an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic structure $P6/mm'm'$ (comprised by Tb and Mn moments) with slow magnetic fluctuations below $T_{\rm C2}$~=~320~K. These fluctuations exhibit a slowing down below $T_{\rm C1}^{*}$~${\simeq}$~120~K, and we see the formation of static patches with ideal out-of-plane order below $T_{\rm C1}$~${\simeq}$~20~K which grow in a volume with decreasing temperature. The appearance of the static patches has a similar onset to the interesting phenomenon such as spin-polarized Dirac dispersion with a large Chern gap and topological edge states. We further show that the temperature evolution of the anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) is strongly influenced by the low temperature magnetic crossover. Our presented experimental results show that the onset of the topological electronic properties tied to the Dirac band is promoted only by true static out-of-plane ferrimagnetic order in TbMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ and is washed out by the slow magnetic fluctuations above $T_{\rm C1}$~${\simeq}$~20~K. Remarkably, hydrostatic pressure of 2.1 GPa stabilises static out-of-plane topological ferrimagnetic ground state in the whole volume of the sample. Therefore the exciting perspective arises of a magnetic system in which the topological response can be controlled, and thus explored, over a wide range of parameters.

Science Requirements and Detector Concepts for the Electron-Ion Collider: EIC Yellow Report

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter

Dynamics under radiation damping from ab-initio formalism -nonlocal restraint on acceleration runaway in electrodynamics

Classically encountered problem of acceleration runaway in radiative motion of a charged-particle is addressed by considering the criterion of minimum radiation loss under optimum displacement in variationally referred dynamic course in between a pair of arbitrarily selected space-like surfaces having time-like separation. Using the criterion, analysis made by involving a family of infinitesimally differed paths reveals that for attaining stationary action of the dynamic course it is necessary to involve orchestrated displacement of the path family. Dynamics that generally follows from such analysis involves nonlocally mediated interaction besides the conventional ones. Amidst external field perturbation it is shown that ubiquitous nonlocal mediation incessantly attempts optimizing displacement in accomplishing minimum radiation loss. The mediation involves virtual exchange of quantized energy and momentum of the interacting field and particle, which in conformity with quantum mechanical prescription is describable by unitary evolution. Under increasingly high perturbation, the mediation can boost its defensive effort but up to a critical limit with stress release predominantly as Larmor radiation relaxation. Observable acceleration and jerk, and relaxations thereof in the nonstationary evolution are indeed markers of the defense failure. Recoil from the Larmor relaxation impedes kinetic energy growth and also imparts shear stress to the spherically polarized vacuum field of point charge; the transverse stress release having similitude of Hawking-Unruh radiation. Defending nonlocal field restrains acceleration runaway and loss of causality. The classically based ab-initio analysis on nonlocal realisms further proves its versatility in revealing nonlocally mediated geodesics structure of quantized 4-space with useful revelations.

Hawking-Unruh radiation as irreversible consequence of radiative action in dynamics

Hawking-Unruh thermal state of warm surrounding field encountered in non-inertial frames is shown to be a real phenomenon, a marker of nonstationary dynamic evolutions. In accelerated motion of a charged particle it is shown that the recoiled damping effect of Larmor radiation relaxation leads to distinctive thermal power, which is akin to that of Hawking-Unruh radiation from warm surrounding field of the accelerated charge. The damping effect from recoil-momentum of transverse electromagnetic field is worked out by considering torque imparted to the inherently existing angular evolution of spherically polarized vacuum field around the point-like charged particle in acceleration. Hawking-Unruh effects is generally noted to be a universal marker of decoherence in evolution in all scales of microscopic, macroscopic and megascopic systems. Besides detailing the case of electrodynamics, the various efficacies of H-U relaxation are considered in the nonstationary evolutions.

Frictional damping in radiative electrodynamics and its scaling to macroscopic systems

Radiation force in Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation is revisited for possible signature of irreversible action in the dynamics. The analysis shows that the classical electron can dissipate out a certain fraction of field energy that distinguishes itself from the well known Larmor radiation loss. The thermal power loss is shown to follow bi-quadratic acceleration functionality, which is akin to the characteristics of Hawking-Unruh radiation emission from warm surrounding field of a non-inertial observer. Reversibility in nonstationary evolution is possible at the expense of power from concerned external field. By revealing nonlocal mitigation characteristics in nonstationary evolutions, a measure of dissipative relaxation in the radiative electrodynamics is worked out to compare the two distinctly different modes of energy losses. The measure is shown to be applicable uniquely in all scales of externally perturbed systems undergoing nonstationary dynamics, and is used as a common thread to explain frictional contributions of phonons and electrons reported for metals in superconductive phase transitions. Key words: Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation, radiation force, Hawking-Unruh radiation, frictional dissipation.

Strong coupling nature of kagome superconductivity in LaRu$_3$Si$_2$

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments together with first-principles calculations on microscopic properties of superconductivity in the kagome superconductor LaRu$_3$Si$_2$ with $T_{\rm c}$ ${\simeq}$ 7K. We find that the calculated normal state band structure features a kagome flat band and Dirac as well as van Hove points formed by the Ru-$dz^2$ orbitals near the Fermi level. Below $T_{\rm c}$, $μ$SR reveals isotropic type-II superconductivity, which is robust against hydrostatic pressure up to 2 GPa. Intriguingly, the ratio 2$Δ/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}$ ${\simeq}$ 4.3 (where $Δ$ is the superconducting energy gap) is in the strong coupling limit, and $T_{\rm c}$/$λ_{eff}^{-2}$ (where $λ$ is the penetration depth) is comparable to that of high-temperature unconventional superconductors. We also find that electron-phonon coupling alone can only reproduce small fraction of $T_{\rm c}$ from calculations, which suggests other factors in enhancing $T_{\rm c}$ such as the correlation effect from the kagome flat band, the van Hove point on the kagome lattice, and high density of states from narrow kagome bands. Our experiments and calculations taken together point to strong coupling and the unconventional nature of kagome superconductivity in LaRu$_3$Si$_2$.

Successive magnetic transitions in heavy fermion superconductor Ce3PtIn11 studied by 115In nuclear quadrupole resonance

Nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements were performed on the heavy fermion superconductor Ce3PtIn11 with Tc = 0.32 K. The temperature dependence of both spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 and NQR spectra evidences the occurrence of two successive magnetic transitions with TN1 = 2.2 K and TN2 = 2.0 K. In successive magnetic transitions, even though the magnetic moment at the Ce(2) site plays a major role, the magnetic moment at the Ce(1) site also contributes to some extent. While a commensurate antiferromagnetic ordered state appears for TN2 < T < TN1, a partially incommensurate antiferromagnetic ordered state is suggested for T < TN2.

Using uniaxial stress to probe the relationship between competing superconducting states in a cuprate with spin-stripe order

We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models.

Pion form factor and low-energy hadronic contribution to muon $g-2$ by analytic extrapolation: consistency and sensitivity tests

The largest error in the theoretical determination of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is due to the low-energy hadronic vacuum polarization, which cannot be calculated by perturbative QCD and requires nonperturbative techniques. Recently, an accurate determination of the low-energy two-pion contribution to muon $g-2$ has been obtained by a parametrization-free analytic continuation of the pion vector form factor from other kinematical regions. In this work we compare the results of the analytic continuation with direct determinations at low momenta from experiment and lattice QCD. We also explore the sensitivity of the method to the timelike data on the modulus of the form factor used as input, by extending the input region to energies up to 0.76 GeV.

A next-generation LHC heavy-ion experiment

The present document discusses plans for a compact, next-generation multi-purpose detector at the LHC as a follow-up to the present ALICE experiment. The aim is to build a nearly massless barrel detector consisting of truly cylindrical layers based on curved wafer-scale ultra-thin silicon sensors with MAPS technology, featuring an unprecedented low material budget of 0.05% X$_0$ per layer, with the innermost layers possibly positioned inside the beam pipe. In addition to superior tracking and vertexing capabilities over a wide momentum range down to a few tens of MeV/$c$, the detector will provide particle identification via time-of-flight determination with about 20~ps resolution. In addition, electron and photon identification will be performed in a separate shower detector. The proposed detector is conceived for studies of pp, pA and AA collisions at luminosities a factor of 20 to 50 times higher than possible with the upgraded ALICE detector, enabling a rich physics program ranging from measurements with electromagnetic probes at ultra-low transverse momenta to precision physics in the charm and beauty sector.

Study of hard and electromagnetic processes at CERN-SPS energies: an investigation of the high-$μ_{\mathbf{B}}$ region of the QCD phase diagram with NA60+

The exploration of the phase diagram of Quantum ChromoDynamics (QCD) is carried out by studying ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The energy range covered by the CERN SPS ($\sqrt{s_{\rm \scriptscriptstyle{NN}}} \sim$ 6-17 GeV) is ideal for the investigation of the region of the phase diagram corresponding to finite baryochemical potential ($μ_{\rm B}$), and has been little explored up to now. We propose in this document a new experiment, NA60+, that would address several observables which are fundamental for the understanding of the phase transition from hadronic matter towards a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) at SPS energies. In particular, we propose to study, as a function of the collision energy, the production of thermal dimuons from the created system, from which one would obtain a caloric curve of the QCD phase diagram that is sensitive to the order of the phase transition. In addition, the measurement of a $ρ$-a$_1$ mixing contribution would provide conclusive insights into the restoration of the chiral symmetry of QCD. In parallel, studies of heavy quark and quarkonium production would also be carried out, addressing the measurement of transport properties of the QGP and the investigation of the onset of the deconfinement transition. The document also defines an experimental set-up which couples a vertex telescope based on monolithic active pixel sensors (MAPS) to a muon spectrometer with tracking (GEM) and triggering (RPC) detectors within a large acceptance toroidal magnet. Results of physics performance studies for most observables accessible to NA60+ are discussed, showing that the results of the experiment would lead to a significant advance of our understanding of strong interaction physics. The document has been submitted as an input to the European Particle Physics Strategy Update 2018-2020 (http://europeanstrategyupdate.web.cern.ch/).

Hydrostatic pressure tuned magneto-structural transition and occurrence of pressure induced exchange bias effect in Mn$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$NiGe alloy

Magnetic and magneto-functional behavior of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy with nominal composition Mn$_{0.85}$Fe$_{0.15}$NiGe have been investigated in ambient as well as in high pressure condition. The alloy undergoes first order martensitic phase transition (MPT) around 200 K and also shows large conventional magnetocaloric effect (MCE) ($ΔS$ $\sim$ -21 J/kg-K for magnetic field ($H$) changing from 0-50 kOe) around the transition in ambient condition. Application of external hydrostatic pressure ($P$) results a shift in MPT towards the lower temperature and a clear decrease in the saturation moment of the alloy at 5 K. The peak value of MCE is also found to decrease with increasing external $P$ ($\sim$ 18 J/kg-K decrease in $ΔS$ has been observed for $P$ = 12.5 kbar). The most interesting observation is the occurance of exchange bias effect (EBE) on application of external $P$. The competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interaction in presence of external $P$ plays the pivotal role towards the observation of $P$ induced EBE.

Tuning of thermoelectric properties with changing Se content in Sb2Te3

Polycrystalline Sb 2 Te 3-x Se x (0.0 < x < 1.0) samples were synthesized by the solid state reaction method. The structural analysis showed that up to the maximal concentration of Se, the samples possess the Rhombohedral crystal symmetry (space group R 3 m ). Increase of Se content increases the resistivity of the samples. Variation of phonon frequencies, observed from Raman spectroscopic study, depict anomalous behaviour around x = 0.2. The sample Sb 2 Te 2.8 Se 0.2 also shows maximum Seebeck coefficient, carrier concentration and thermoelectric power factor. Nature of scattering mechanism controlling the thermopower data has been explored. The thermoelectric properties of the synthesized materials have been analyzed theoretically in the frame of Boltzmann equation approach.

Boundary and Exterior of a Multiset Topology

The concepts of exterior and boundary in multiset topological space are introduced. We further established few relationships between the concepts of boundary, closure, exterior and interior of an M- set. These concepts have been pigeonholed by other existing notions viz., open sets, closed sets, clopen sets and limit points. The necessary and sufficient condition for a multiset to have an empty exterior is also discussed.
