Nuclear surface energy in a semiclassical Extended Thomas-Fermi approach with finite-range interactions

Using the Gogny finite-range interaction, we investigate a series of semiclassical approximations to the Fock term entering the calculation of the nuclear surface energy. By comparing these approximations with the exact results obtained from the full Hartree-Fock solution in semi-infinite nuclear matter, we derive a simple pocket formula that can be incorporated into fitting protocols to estimate the surface energy coefficient with excellent accuracy.

Generalised Bohr Hamiltonian for Gogny interactions

Using a generalised Bohr Hamiltonian formalism together with the Gogny interaction to provide a microscopic input of the required mass parameters, we present the potential energy surface and the evolution of the first excited 2$^+$ state for the gadolinium isotopic chain. We observe that the energies and electromagnetic transitions of low-lying states are fairly similar for the various parametrisations and are in good agreement with experimental data.

A new three-ranged Gogny interaction in touch with pion exchange

We present a new Gogny-type finite-range effective interaction including a third Gaussian in the central term. Based on simple arguments valid for an arbitrary radial form factor, the three ranges are fixed from physical grounds, relating them to one-boson exchange interactions. Moreover, some parameters of the longest range are fixed through the G-matrix elements of the One Pion Exchange Potential. On top of giving a fairly good description of atomic nuclei properties, the resulting interaction leads to a remarkable improvement of some infinite matter properties that are relevant for astrophysical calculations.

Surface energy coefficient of a N2LO Skyrme energy functional : a semiclassical Extended Thomas-Fermi approach

We generalize to N2LO Skyrme functionals the semi-classical approach of Grammaticos and Voros in order to calculate the Extended Thomas Fermi expressions of the new densities and currents appearing at the N2LO level. Within a one dimensional symmetric semi infinite nuclear matter model and using a simple Fermi-like density profile, we obtain an easy-to-use formula for the surface energy including the contributions of the central, density-dependent and spin-orbit terms up to $\hbar^2$. Such a formula can be easily used as a first attempt to constrain the surface properties of new N2LO Skyrme parametrizations. The N2LO parametrization tested in this paper is shown to exhibit a shift (compared to a full Hartree-Fock calculation) which is quantitatively similar to the one obtained with the traditional Skyrme parametrizations.

Linear response theory in asymmetric nuclear matter for Skyrme functionals including spin-orbit and tensor terms II: Charge Exchange

We present the formalism of linear response theory both at zero and finite temperature in the case of asymmetric nuclear matter excited by an isospin flip probe. The particle-hole interaction is derived from a general Skyrme functional that includes spin-orbit and tensor terms. Response functions are obtained by solving a closed algebraic system of equations. Spin strength functions are analyzed for typical values of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature.

Shock waves in colliding Fermi gases at finite temperature

We study the formation and the dynamics of a shock wave originating from the collision between two ultracold clouds of strongly interacting fermions as observed at a lower temperature in an experiment by Joseph et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 150401 (2011)]. We use the Boltzmann equation within the test-particle method to describe the evolution of the system in the normal phase. We also show a direct comparison with the hydrodynamic approach and insist on the necessity of including a shear viscosity and a thermal conductivity term in the equations to prevent unphysical behavior from taking place.

Error analysis of the parameters of the Skyrme N2LO pseudo-potential

We perform a detailed analysis of the parameters of the Skyrme SN2LO interaction. By mean of a covariance matrix analysis, we have been able to provide error bars and build the complete covariance matrix. The latter will be used in future applications to properly study the propagation of errors on nuclear observables calculated with this pseudo-potential.

Two-body contributions to the effective mass in nuclear effective interactions

Starting from general expressions of well-chosen symmetric nuclear matter quantities derived for both zero- and finite-range effective theories, we derive the contributions to the effective mass. We first show that, independently of the range, the two-body contribution is enough to describe correctly the saturation mechanism but gives an effective mass value around $m^*/m \simeq 0.4$. Then, we show that the full interaction (by instance, an effective two-body density-dependent term on top of the pure two-body term) is needed to reach the accepted value $m^*/m \simeq 0.7-0.8$.

Solution of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations and fitting procedure using N2LO Skyrme pseudo-potential in spherical symmetry

We present the development of the extended Skyrme N2LO pseudo-potential in the case of spherical even-even nuclei calculations. The energy density functional is first presented. Then we derive the mean-field equations and discuss the numerical method used to solve the resulting fourth-order differential equation together with the behaviour of the solutions at the origin. Finally, a fitting procedure for such a N2LO interaction is discussed and we provide a first parametrization. Typical ground-state observables are calculated and compared against experimental data.

Does the Gogny interaction need a third Gaussian?

By considering infinite matter constraints only, we suggest in this paper that the Gogny interaction should benefit from a third Gaussian in its central part. A statistical analysis is given to select the possible ranges which are compatible with these constraints and which minimize a $χ^2$ function.

Infinite matter properties and zero-range limit of nonrelativistic finite-range interactions

We discuss some infinite matter properties of two finite-range interactions widely used for nuclear structure calculations, namely Gogny and M3Y interactions. We show that some useful informations can be deduced for the central, tensor and spin-orbit terms from the spin-isospin channels and the partial wave decomposition of the symmetric nuclear matter equation of state. We show in particular that the central part of the Gogny interaction should benefit from the introduction of a third Gaussian and the tensor parameters of both interactions can be deduced from special combinations of partial waves. We also discuss the fact that the spin-orbit of the M3Y interaction is not compatible with local gauge invariance. Finally, we show that the zero-range limit of both families of interactions coincides with the specific form of the zero-range N3LO Skyrme interaction and we emphasize from this analogy the benefits of N3LO.

Partial wave decomposition of finite-range effective tensor interaction

We perform a detailed analysis of the properties of the finite-range tensor term associated with the Gogny and M3Y effective interactions. In particular, by using a partial wave decomposition of the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter, we show how we can extract their tensor parameters directly from microscopic results based on bare nucleon-nucleon interactions. Furthermore, we show that the zero-range limit of both finite-range interactions has the form of the N3LO Skyrme pseudo-potential, which thus constitutes a reliable approximation in the density range relevant for finite nuclei. Finally, we use Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results to fix the tensor parameters for the three effective interactions.

Extended Skyrme Equation of State in asymmetric nuclear matter

We present a new equation of state for infinite systems (symmetric, asymmetric and neutron matter) based on an extended Skyrme functional constrained by microscopic Brueckner-Bethe-Goldstone results. The resulting equation of state reproduces with very good accuracy the main features of microscopic calculations and it is compatible with recent measurements of two times Solar-mass neutron stars. We provide all necessary analytical expressions to facilitate a quick numerical implementation of quantities of astrophysical interest.

Spurious finite-size instabilities in nuclear energy density functionals: spin channel

It has been recently shown, that some Skyrme functionals can lead to non-converging results in the calculation of some properties of atomic nuclei. A previous study has pointed out a possible link between these convergence problems and the appearance of finite-size instabilities in symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) around saturation density. We show that the finite-size instabilities not only affect the ground state properties of atomic nuclei, but they can also influence the calculations of vibrational excited states in finite nuclei. We perform systematic fully-self consistent Random Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations in spherical doubly-magic nuclei. We employ several Skyrme functionals and vary the isoscalar and isovector coupling constants of the time-odd term $\mathbf{s}\cdot Δ\mathbf{s}$ . We determine critical values of these coupling constants beyond which the RPA calculations do not converge because RPA the stability matrix becomes non-positive.By comparing the RPA calculations of atomic nuclei with those performed for SNM we establish a correspondence between the critical densities in the infinite system and the critical coupling constants for which the RPA calculations do not converge. We find a quantitative stability criterion to detect finite-size instabilities related to the spin $\mathbf{s}\cdot Δ\mathbf{s}$ term of a functional. This criterion could be easily implemented into the standard fitting protocols to fix the coupling constants of the Skyrme functional.

Extended Skyrme pseudo-potential deduced from infinite matter properties

We discuss the contributions to the Equation of State for the N$\ell$LO Skyrme pseudo-potential ($\ell$=2,3). We show that by adding 4th and 6th order gradient terms, it is possible to fairly reproduce the spin/isospin decomposition of an equation of state obtained from \emph{ab-initio} methods. Moreover, by inspecting the partial-wave decomposition of the equation of state, we show for the first time a possible way to add explicit constraints on the sign of the tensor terms of the Skyrme interaction.

Linear response of homogeneous nuclear matter with energy density functionals

Response functions of infinite nuclear matter with arbitrary isospin asymmetry are studied in the framework of the random phase approximation. The residual interaction is derived from a general nuclear Skyrme energy density functional. Besides the usual central, spin-orbit and tensor terms it could also include other components as new density-dependent terms or three-body terms. Algebraic expressions for the response functions are obtained from the Bethe-Salpeter equation for the particle-hole propagator. Applications to symmetric nuclear matter, pure neutron matter and asymmetric nuclear matter are presented and discussed. Spin-isospin strength functions are analyzed for varying conditions of density, momentum transfer, isospin asymmetry, and temperature for some representative Skyrme functionals. Particular attention is paid to the discussion of instabilities, either real or unphysical, which could manifest in finite nuclei.
