Controlling Terahertz Spintronic Photocurrents in 2D-Semiconductor|Ferromagnet Heterostructures through a Functional Hybrid Interface

A profound understanding of terahertz (THz) spin and charge currents in heterostructures involving ferromagnets (FMs) and two-dimensional (2D) materials promises emerging applications in high-speed sensing and data processing. Yet, ultrafast experimental insights remain very limited. Here, we study the efficient photo-generation of THz spin and charge currents in bilayers made from the transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MoS2 and the FM Co. We find that the efficiency of current generation strongly depends on the pump photon energy, as previously reported. Surprisingly, however, we observe that the current dynamics remain identical for pump photon energies above and below the MoS2 band gap. Supported by ab-initio calculations, we conclude that an interfacial hybrid metallic layer forms at the MoS2/Co boundary that has a pronounced photon-energy-dependent absorptance. Thus, the hybrid interfacial layer effectively acts like a pump-energy transducer that increases the spin-current generated in the nearby Co. Our results uncover the vital role of interfacial hybridization as a yet unexplored mechanism for efficient generation of ultrafast photocurrents in 2D-TMD|FM structures.

Observation of Josephson coupling through an interlayer of antiferromagnetically ordered chromium

The supercurrent transport in metallic Josephson tunnel junctions with an additional interlayer made up by chromium, being an itinerant antiferromagnet, was studied. Uniform Josephson coupling was observed as a function of the magnetic field. The supercurrent shows a weak dependence on the interlayer thickness for thin chromium layers and decays exponentially for thicker films. The diffusion constant and the coherence length in the antiferromagnet were estimated. The antiferromagnetic state of the barrier was indirectly verified using reference samples. Our results are compared to macroscopic and microscopic models.

Large inverse tunneling magnetoresistance in Co$_2$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al/MgO/CoFe magnetic tunnel junctions

Magnetic tunnel junctions with the layer sequence Co$_2$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al/MgO/CoFe were fabricated by magnetron sputtering at room temperature (RT). The samples exhibit a large inverse tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect of up to -66% at RT. The largest value of -84% at 20 K reflects a rather weak influence of temperature. The dependence on the voltage drop shows an unusual behavior with two almost symmetric peaks at $\pm600$ mV with large inverse TMR ratios and small positive values around zero bias.

Single-crystalline nanopillars for spin-transfer measurements

We report on current-induced magnetization switching (CIMS) in single- crystalline nanopillars. Fe(14 nm)/Cr(0.9 nm)/Fe(10 nm)/Ag(6 nm)/Fe(2 nm) multilayers are deposited by molecular-beam epitaxy. The central Fe layer is coupled to the thick one by interlayer exchange coupling over Cr. The topmost Fe layer is decoupled (free layer). Nanopillars with 150 nm diameter are prepared by optical and e-beam lithography. The opposite spin scattering asymmetries of Fe/Cr and Fe/Ag interfaces enable us to observe CIMS at small magnetic fields and opposite current polarity in a single device. At high magnetic fields, step-like resistance changes are measured at positive currents and are attributed to current-driven magnetic excitations.

Structural and magneto-transport characterization of Co_2Cr_xFe_(1-x)Al Heusler alloy films

We investigate the structure and magneto-transport properties of thin films of the Co_2Cr_xFe_(1-x)Al full-Heusler compound, which is predicted to be a half-metal by first-principles theoretical calculations. Thin films are deposited by magnetron sputtering at room temperature on various substrates in order to tune the growth from polycrystalline on thermally oxidized Si substrates to highly textured and even epitaxial on MgO(001) substrates, respectively. Our Heusler films are magnetically very soft and ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures up to 630 K. The total magnetic moment is reduced compared to the theoretical bulk value, but still comparable to values reported for films grown at elevated temperature. Polycrystalline Heusler films combined with MgO barriers are incorporated into magnetic tunnel junctions and yield 37% magnetoresistance at room temperature.

Spin Reorientations Induced by Morphology Changes in Fe/Ag(001)

By means of magneto-optical Kerr effect we observe spin reorientations from in-plane to out-of-plane and vice versa upon annealing thin Fe films on Ag(001) at increasing temperatures. Scanning tunneling microscopy images of the different Fe films are used to quantify the surface roughness. The observed spin reorientations can be explained with the experimentally acquired roughness parameters by taking into account the effect of roughness on both the magnetic dipolar and the magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

Antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling across an amorphous metallic spacer layer

By means of magneto-optical Kerr effect we observe for the first time antiferromagnetic coupling between ferromagnetic layers across an amorphous metallic spacer layer. Biquadratic coupling occurs at the transition from a ferromagnetically to an antiferromagnetically coupled region. Scanning tunneling microscopy images of all involved layers are used to extract thickness fluctuations and to verify the amorphous state of the spacer. The observed antiferromagnetic coupling behavior is explained by RKKY interaction taking into account the amorphous structure of the spacer material.
