Exponential Asymptotics for Dark Solitons of the Discrete NLS Model

In the present work we revisit the problem of the dark solitary wave pinned in the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. In a number of recent studies, the methodology of exponential asymptotics was attempted to be utilized in this problem, however the results were not found to be fully in agreement with associated multiprecision numerical computations. Here we resolve this conundrum by finding precise exponential asymptotics for the pinned dark solitary waves. Moreover, we reconcile the relevant result with a general theory of pinned dark solitary waves in the {\it continuum} nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations in the presence of external potentials.

Stability of smooth solitary waves under intensity--dependent dispersion

The cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS) in one dimension is considered in the presence of an intensity-dependent dispersion term. We study bright solitary waves with smooth profiles which extend from the limit where the dependence of the dispersion coefficient on the wave intensity is negligible to the limit where the solitary wave becomes singular due to vanishing dispersion coefficient. We analyze and numerically explore the stability for such smooth solitary waves, showing with the help of numerical approximations that the family of solitary waves becomes unstable in the intermediate region between the two limits, while being stable in both limits. This bistability, that has also been observed in other NLS equations with the generalized nonlinearity, brings about interesting dynamical transitions from one stable branch to another stable branch, that are explored in direct numerical simulations of the NLS equation with the intensity-dependent dispersion term.

Positive solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for energy critical and supercritical nonlinearities

We consider positive and spatially decaying solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a harmonic potential. For the energy-critical case, there exists a ground state if and only if the frequency belongs to (1,3) in three dimensions and in (0,d) in d dimensions. We give a precise description on asymptotic behaviors of the ground state up to the leading order term for different values of d. For the energy-supercritical case, there exists a singular solution for some frequency in (0,d). We compute the Morse index of the singular solution in the class of radial functions and show that the Morse index is infinite in the oscillatory case, is equal to 1 or 2 in the monotone case for nonlinearity powers not large enough and is equal to 1 in the monotone case for nonlinearity power sufficiently large.

Solitary waves with intensity-dependent dispersion: variational characterization

A continuous family of singular solitary waves exists in a prototypical system with intensity-dependent dispersion. The family has a cusped soliton as the limiting lowest energy state and is formed by the solitary waves with bell-shaped heads of different lengths. We show that this family can be obtained variationally by minimization of mass at fixed energy and fixed length of the bell-shaped head. We develop a weak formulation for the singular solitary waves and prove that they are stable under perturbations which do not change the length of the bell-shaped head. Numerical simulations confirm the stability of the singular solitary waves.

Localization in optical systems with an intensity-dependent dispersion

We address the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with intensity-dependent dispersion which was recently proposed in the context of nonlinear optical systems. Contrary to the previous findings, we prove that no solitary wave solutions exist if the sign of the intensity-dependent dispersion coincides with the sign of the constant dispersion, whereas a continuous family of such solutions exists in the case of the opposite signs. The family includes two particular solutions, namely cusped and bell-shaped solitons, where the former represents the lowest energy state in the family and the latter is a limit of solitary waves in a regularized system. We further analyze the delicate analytical properties of these solitary waves such as the asymptotic behavior near singularities, the spectral stability, and the convergence of the fixed-point iterations near such solutions. The analytical theory is corroborated by means of numerical approximations.

Growth of perturbations to the peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation,

Peaked periodic waves in the Camassa-Holm equation are revisited. Linearized evolution equations are derived for perturbations to the peaked periodic waves and linearized instability is proven both in $H^1$ and $W^{1,\infty}$ norms. Dynamics of perturbations in $H^1$ is related to the existence of two conserved quantities and is bounded in the full nonlinear system due to these conserved quantities. On the other hand, perturbations to the peaked periodic wave grow in $W^{1,\infty}$ norm and may blow up in a finite time in the nonlinear evolution of the Camassa-Holm equation.

Standing lattice solitons in the discrete NLS equation with saturation

We consider standing lattice solitons for discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with saturation (NLSS), where so-called transparent points were recently discovered. These transparent points are the values of the governing parameter (e.g., the lattice spacing) for which the Peierls-Nabarro barrier vanishes. In order to explain the existence of transparent points, we study a solitary wave solution in the continuous NLSS and analyse the singularities of its analytic continuation in the complex plane. The existence of a quadruplet of logarithmic singularities nearest to the real axis is proven and applied to two settings: (i) the fourth-order differential equation arising as the next-order continuum approximation of the discrete NLSS and (ii) the advance-delay version of the discrete NLSS.

Stationary states of the cubic conformal flow on $\mathbb{S}^3$

We consider the resonant system of amplitude equations for the conformally invariant cubic wave equation on the three-sphere. Using the local bifurcation theory, we characterize all stationary states that bifurcate from the first two eigenmodes. Thanks to the variational formulation of the resonant system and energy conservation, we also determine variational characterization and stability of the bifurcating states. For the lowest eigenmode, we obtain two orbitally stable families of the bifurcating stationary states: one is a constrained maximizer of energy and the other one is a constrained minimizer of the energy, where the constraints are due to other conserved quantities of the resonant system. For the second eigenmode, we obtain two constrained minimizers of the energy, which are also orbitally stable in the time evolution. All other bifurcating states are saddle points of energy under these constraints and their stability in the time evolution is unknown.

Bifurcations of multi-vortex configurations in rotating Bose--Einstein condensates

We analyze global bifurcations along the family of radially symmetric vortices in the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a symmetric harmonic potential and a chemical potential $μ$ under the steady rotation with frequency $Ω$. The families are constructed in the small-amplitude limit when the chemical potential $μ$ is close to an eigenvalue of the Schrödinger operator for a quantum harmonic oscillator. We show that for $Ω$ near $0$, the Hessian operator at the radially symmetric vortex of charge $m_{0}\in\mathbb{N}$ has $m_{0}(m_{0}+1)/2$ pairs of negative eigenvalues. When the parameter $Ω$ is increased, $1+m_{0}(m_{0}-1)/2$ global bifurcations happen. Each bifurcation results in the disappearance of a pair of negative eigenvalues in the Hessian operator at the radially symmetric vortex. The distributions of vortices in the bifurcating families are analyzed by using symmetries of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation and the zeros of Hermite--Gauss eigenfunctions. The vortex configurations that can be found in the bifurcating families are the asymmetric vortex $(m_0 = 1)$, the asymmetric vortex pair $(m_0 = 2)$, and the vortex polygons $(m_0 \geq 2)$.

Krein Signature in Hamiltonian and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Systems

We explain the concept of Krein signature in Hamiltonian and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric systems on the case study of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a real harmonic potential and an imaginary linear potential. These potentials correspond to the magnetic trap, and a linear gain/loss in the mean-field model of cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates. For the linearized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we introduce the real-valued Krein quantity, which is nonzero if the eigenvalue is neutrally stable and simple and zero if the eigenvalue is unstable. If the neutrally stable eigenvalue is simple, it persists with respect to perturbations. However, if it is multiple, it may split into unstable eigenvalues under perturbations. A necessary condition for the onset of instability past the bifurcation point requires existence of two simple neutrally stable eigenvalues of opposite Krein signatures before the bifurcation point. This property is useful in the parameter continuations of neutrally stable eigenvalues of the linearized Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Stabilization of the coupled pendula chain under parametric PT-symmetric driving force

We consider a chain of coupled pendula pairs, where each pendulum is connected to the nearest neighbors in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The common strings in each pair are modulated periodically by an external force. In the limit of small coupling and near the 1:2 parametric resonance, we derive a novel system of coupled PT-symmetric discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which has Hamiltonian symmetry but has no gauge symmetry. By using the conserved energy, we find the parameter range for the linear and nonlinear stability of the zero equilibrium. Numerical experiments illustrate how destabilization of the zero equilibrium takes place when the stability constraints are not satisfied. The central pendulum excites nearest pendula and this process continues until a dynamical equilibrium is reached where each pendulum in the chain oscillates at a finite amplitude.

On the characterization of vortex configurations in the steady rotating Bose--Einstein condensates

Motivated by experiments in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we compare predictions of a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) for dynamics of one and two individual vortices in the rotating BECs with those of the partial differential equation (PDE). In particular, we characterize orbitally stable vortex configurations in a symmetric harmonic trap due to a cubic repulsive interaction and the steady rotation. The ODE system is analyzed in details and the PDE model is approximated numerically. Good agreement between the two models is established in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit that corresponds to the BECs at the large chemical potentials.

Dimer with gain and loss: Integrability and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry restoration

A $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger dimer is a two-site discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation with one site losing and the other one gaining energy at the same rate. In this paper, two four-parameter families of cubic $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dimers are constructed as gain-loss extensions of their conservative, Hamiltonian, counterparts. We prove that all these damped-driven equations define completely integrable Hamiltonian systems. The second aim of our study is to identify nonlinearities that give rise to the spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry restoration. When the symmetry of the underlying linear dimer is broken and an unstable small perturbation starts to grow, the nonlinear coupling of the required type diverts progressively large amounts of energy from the gaining to the losing site. As a result, the exponential growth is saturated and all trajectories remain trapped in a finite part of the phase space regardless of the value of the gain-loss coefficient.

When Does Linear Stability Not Exclude Nonlinear Instability ?

We describe a mechanism that results in the nonlinear instability of stationary states even in the case where the stationary states are linearly stable. This instability is due to the nonlinearity-induced coupling of the linearization's internal modes of negative energy with the wave continuum. In a broad class of nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equations considered, the presence of such internal modes guarantees the nonlinear instability of the stationary states in the evolution dynamics. To corroborate this idea, we explore three prototypical case examples: (a) an anti-symmetric soliton in a double-well potential, (b) a twisted localized mode in a one-dimensional lattice with cubic nonlinearity, and (c) a discrete vortex in a two-dimensional saturable lattice. In all cases, we observe a weak nonlinear instability, despite the linear stability of the respective states.

Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution of the Cauchy problem for the Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation

We consider the initial-value problem for the regularized Boussinesq-Ostrovsky equation in the class of periodic functions. Validity of the weakly-nonlinear solution, given in terms of two counter-propagating waves satisfying the uncoupled Ostrovsky equations, is examined. We prove analytically and illustrate numerically that the improved accuracy of the solution can be achieved at the time scales of the Ostrovsky equation if solutions of the linearized Ostrovsky equations are incorporated into the asymptotic solution. Compared to the previous literature, we show that the approximation error can be controlled in the energy space of periodic functions and the nonzero mean values of the periodic functions can be naturally incorporated in the justification analysis.

Short-wave transverse instabilities of line solitons of the 2-D hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We prove that line solitons of the two-dimensional hyperbolic nonlinear Schrödinger equation are unstable with respect to transverse perturbations of arbitrarily small periods, {\em i.e.}, short waves. The analysis is based on the construction of Jost functions for the continuous spectrum of Schrödinger operators, the Sommerfeld radiation conditions, and the Lyapunov--Schmidt decomposition. Precise asymptotic expressions for the instability growth rate are derived in the limit of short periods.

Finite-time singularities in the dynamical evolution of contact lines

We study finite-time singularities in the linear advection-diffusion equation with a variable speed on a semi-infinite line. The variable speed is determined by an additional condition at the boundary, which models the dynamics of a contact line of a hydrodynamic flow at a 180 contact angle. Using apriori energy estimates, we derive conditions on variable speed that guarantee that a sufficiently smooth solution of the linear advection--diffusion equation blows up in a finite time. Using the class of self-similar solutions to the linear advection-diffusion equation, we find the blow-up rate of singularity formation. This blow-up rate does not agree with previous numerical simulations of the model problem.

PT-symmetric lattices with spatially extended gain/loss are generically unstable

We illustrate, through a series of prototypical examples, that linear parity-time (PT) symmetric lattices with extended gain/loss profiles are generically unstable, for any non-zero value of the gain/loss coefficient. Our examples include a parabolic real potential with a linear imaginary part and the cases of no real and constant or linear imaginary potentials. On the other hand, this instability can be avoided and the spectrum can be real for localized or compact PT-symmetric potentials. The linear lattices are analyzed through discrete Fourier transform techniques complemented by numerical computations.
