PT-symmetric lattices with spatially extended gain/loss are generically unstable

We illustrate, through a series of prototypical examples, that linear parity-time (PT) symmetric lattices with extended gain/loss profiles are generically unstable, for any non-zero value of the gain/loss coefficient. Our examples include a parabolic real potential with a linear imaginary part and the cases of no real and constant or linear imaginary potentials. On the other hand, this instability can be avoided and the spectrum can be real for localized or compact PT-symmetric potentials. The linear lattices are analyzed through discrete Fourier transform techniques complemented by numerical computations.

Discrete solitons in PT-symmetric lattices

We prove existence of discrete solitons in infinite parity-time (PT-) symmetric lattices by means of analytical continuation from the anticontinuum limit. The energy balance between dissipation and gain implies that in the anticontinuum limit the solitons are constructed from elementary PT-symmetric blocks such as dimers, quadrimers, or more general oligomers. We consider in detail a chain of coupled dimers, analyze bifurcations of discrete solitons from the anticontinuum limit and show that the solitons are stable in a sufficiently large region of the lattice parameters. The generalization of the approach is illustrated on two examples of networks of quadrimers, for which stable discrete solitons are also found.

Matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We study matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with attractive interatomic interactions. We use a multiscale expansion method to identify solution families for chemical potentials in the semi-infinite gap of the linear energy spectrum. Depending on the linear and spin-orbit coupling strengths, the solitons may resemble either standard bright nonlinear Schrödinger solitons or exhibit a modulated density profile, reminiscent of the stripe phase of SO-coupled repulsive BECs. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with our analytical findings, and demonstrate the potential robustness of such solitons for experimentally relevant conditions through stability analysis and direct numerical simulations.

Symmetry-breaking bifurcation in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with symmetric potentials

We consider the focusing (attractive) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with an external, symmetric potential which vanishes at infinity and supports a linear bound state. We prove that the symmetric, nonlinear ground states must undergo a symmetry breaking bifurcation if the potential has a non-degenerate local maxima at zero. Under a generic assumption we show that the bifurcation is either subcritical or supercritical pitchfork. In the particular case of double-well potentials with large separation, the power of nonlinearity determines the subcritical or supercritical character of the bifurcation. The results are obtained from a careful analysis of the spectral properties of the ground states at both small and large values for the corresponding eigenvalue parameter. We employ a novel technique combining concentration--compactness and spectral properties of linearized Schrödinger type operators to show that the symmetric ground states can either be uniquely continued for the entire interval of the eigenvalue parameter or they undergo a symmetry--breaking pitchfork bifurcation due to the second eigenvalue of the linearized operator crossing zero. In addition we prove the appropriate scaling for the stationary states in the limit of large values of the eigenvalue parameter. The scaling and our novel technique imply that all ground states at large eigenvalues must be localized near a critical point of the potential and bifurcate from the soliton of the focusing NLS equation without potential localized at the same point. The theoretical results are illustrated numerically for a double-well potential obtained after the splitting of a single-well potential. We compare the cases before and after the splitting, and numerically investigate bifurcation and stability properties of the ground states which are beyond the reach of our theoretical tools.

Distribution of eigenfrequencies for oscillations of the ground state in the Thomas--Fermi limit

In this work, we present a systematic derivation of the distribution of eigenfrequencies for oscillations of the ground state of a repulsive Bose-Einstein condensate in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit. Our calculations are performed in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional settings. Connections with the earlier work of Stringari, with numerical computations, and with theoretical expectations for invariant frequencies based on symmetry principles are also given.

Excited states in the Thomas-Fermi limit: a variational approach

Excited states of Bose--Einstein condensates are considered in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with repulsive inter-atomic interactions and a harmonic potential. The relative dynamics of dark solitons (density dips on the localized condensate) with respect to the harmonic potential and to each other is approximated using the averaged Lagrangian method. This permits a complete characterization of the equilibrium positions of the dark solitons as a function of the chemical potential parameter. It also yields an analytical handle on the oscillation frequencies of dark solitons around such equilibria. The asymptotic predictions are generalized for an arbitrary number of dark solitons and are corroborated by numerical computations for 2- and 3-soliton configurations.

Variational Approximations of Bifurcations of Asymmetric Solitons in Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schroedinger Lattices

Using a variational approximation we study discrete solitons of a nonlinear Schroedinger lattice with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. Using an ansatz with six parameters we are able to approximate bifurcations of asymmetric solutions connecting site-centered and bond-centered solutions and resulting in the exchange of their stability. We show that the numerically exact and variational approximations are quite close for solitons of small powers.

Asymptotic stability of small solitons in the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation in one dimension

Asymptotic stability of small solitons in one dimension is proved in the framework of a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation with septic and higher power-law nonlinearities and an external potential supporting a simple isolated eigenvalue. The analysis relies on the dispersive decay estimates from Pelinovsky & Stefanov (2008) and the arguments of Mizumachi (2008) for a continuous nonlinear Schrodinger equation in one dimension. Numerical simulations suggest that the actual decay rate of perturbations near the asymptotically stable solitons is higher than the one used in the analysis.

On the spectral theory and dispersive estimates for a discrete Schrödinger equation in one dimension

Based on the recent work \cite{KKK} for compact potentials, we develop the spectral theory for the one-dimensional discrete Schrödinger operator $$ H ϕ= (-\De + V)ϕ=-(ϕ_{n+1} + ϕ_{n-1} - 2 ϕ_n) + V_n ϕ_n. $$ We show that under appropriate decay conditions on the general potential (and a non-resonance condition at the spectral edges), the spectrum of $H$ consists of finitely many eigenvalues of finite multiplicities and the essential (absolutely continuous) spectrum, while the resolvent satisfies the limiting absorption principle and the Puiseux expansions near the edges. These properties imply the dispersive estimates $$ \|e^{i t H} P_{\rm a.c.}(H)\|_{l^2_σ \to l^2_{-σ}} \lesssim t^{-3/2} $$ for any fixed $σ> {5/2}$ and any $t > 0$, where $P_{\rm a.c.}(H)$ denotes the spectral projection to the absolutely continuous spectrum of $H$. In addition, based on the scattering theory for the discrete Jost solutions and the previous results in \cite{SK}, we find new dispersive estimates $$ \|e^{i t H} P_{\rm a.c.}(H) \|_{l^1\to l^\infty}\lesssim t^{-1/3}. $$ These estimates are sharp for the discrete Schrödinger operators even for $V = 0$.

Stability of discrete dark solitons in nonlinear Schrodinger lattices

We obtain new results on the stability of discrete dark solitons bifurcating from the anti-continuum limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation, following the analysis of our previous paper [Physica D 212, 1-19 (2005)]. We derive a criterion for stability or instability of dark solitons from the limiting configuration of the discrete dark soliton and confirm this criterion numerically. We also develop detailed calculations of the relevant eigenvalues for a number of prototypical configurations and obtain very good agreement of asymptotic predictions with the numerical data.

Periodic oscillations of dark solitons in parabolic potentials

We reformulate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with an external parabolic potential as a discrete dynamical system, by using the basis of Hermite functions. We consider small amplitude stationary solutions with a single node, called dark solitons, and examine their existence and linear stability. Furthermore, we prove the persistence of a periodic motion in a neighborhood of such solutions. Our results are corroborated by numerical computations elucidating the existence, linear stability and dynamics of the relevant solutions.

Discrete vector on-site vortices

We study discrete vortices in coupled discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equations. We focus on the vortex cross configuration that has been experimentally observed in photorefractive crystals. Stability of the single-component vortex cross in the anti-continuum limit of small coupling between lattice nodes is proved. In the vector case, we consider two coupled configurations of vortex crosses, namely the charge-one vortex in one component coupled in the other component to either the charge-one vortex (forming a double-charge vortex) or the charge-negative-one vortex (forming a, so-called, hidden-charge vortex). We show that both vortex configurations are stable in the anti-continuum limit if the parameter for the inter-component coupling is small and both of them are unstable when the coupling parameter is large. In the marginal case of the discrete two-dimensional Manakov system, the double-charge vortex is stable while the hidden-charge vortex is linearly unstable. Analytical predictions are corroborated with numerical observations that show good agreement near the anti-continuum limit but gradually deviate for larger couplings between the lattice nodes.

Travelling kinks in discrete phi^4 models

In recent years, three exceptional discretizations of the phi^4 theory have been discovered [J.M. Speight and R.S. Ward, Nonlinearity 7, 475 (1994); C.M. Bender and A. Tovbis, J. Math. Phys. 38, 3700 (1997); P.G. Kevrekidis, Physica D 183, 68 (2003)] which support translationally invariant kinks, i.e. families of stationary kinks centred at arbitrary points between the lattice sites. It has been suggested that the translationally invariant stationary kinks may persist as 'sliding kinks', i.e. discrete kinks travelling at nonzero velocities without experiencing any radiation damping. The purpose of this study is to check whether this is indeed the case. By computing the Stokes constants in beyond-all-order asymptotic expansions, we prove that the three exceptional discretizations do not support sliding kinks for most values of the velocity - just like the standard, one-site, discretization. There are, however, isolated values of velocity for which radiationless kink propagation becomes possible. There is one such value for the discretization of Speight and Ward and three 'sliding velocities' for the model of Kevrekedis.

Nonlinearity Management in Higher Dimensions

In the present short communication, we revisit nonlinearity management of the time-periodic nonlinear Schrodinger equation and the related averaging procedure. We prove that the averaged nonlinear Schrodinger equation does not support the blow-up of solutions in higher dimensions, independently of the strength in the nonlinearity coefficient variance. This conclusion agrees with earlier works in the case of strong nonlinearity management but contradicts those in the case of weak nonlinearity management. The apparent discrepancy is explained by the divergence of the averaging procedure in the limit of weak nonlinearity management.

Nonlinear Schrödinger lattices I: Stability of discrete solitons

We consider the discrete solitons bifurcating from the anti-continuum limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) lattice. The discrete soliton in the anti-continuum limit represents an arbitrary finite superposition of {\em in-phase} or {\em anti-phase} excited nodes, separated by an arbitrary sequence of empty nodes. By using stability analysis, we prove that the discrete solitons are all unstable near the anti-continuum limit, except for the solitons, which consist of alternating anti-phase excited nodes. We classify analytically and confirm numerically the number of unstable eigenvalues associated with each family of the discrete solitons.

Nonlinear Schrödinger lattices II: Persistence and Stability of Discrete Vortices

We study discrete vortices in the anti-continuum limit of the discrete two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equations. The discrete vortices in the anti-continuum limit represent a finite set of excited nodes on a closed discrete contour with a non-zero topological charge. Using the Lyapunov-Schmidt reductions, we find sufficient conditions for continuation and termination of the discrete vortices for a small coupling constant in the discrete NLS lattice. An example of a closed discrete contour is considered that includes the vortex cell (also known as the off-site vortex). We classify the symmetric and asymmetric discrete vortices that bifurcate from the anti-continuum limit. We predict analytically and confirm numerically the number of unstable eigenvalues associated with various families of such discrete vortices.

Averaging For Solitons With Nonlinearity Management

We develop an averaging method for solitons of the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation with periodically varying nonlinearity coefficient. This method is used to effectively describe solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates, in the context of the recently proposed and experimentally realizable technique of Feshbach resonance management. Using the derived local averaged equation, we study matter-wave bright and dark solitons and demonstrate a very good agreement between solutions of the averaged and full equations.

Exact vortex solutions of the complex sine-Gordon theory on the plane

We construct explicit multivortex solutions for the first and second complex sine-Gordon equations. The constructed solutions are expressible in terms of the modified Bessel and rational functions, respectively. The vorticity-raising and lowering Backlund transformations are interpreted as the Schlesinger transformations of the fifth Painleve equation.
