Modules over the small quantum group and semi-infinite flag manifold

We develop a theory of perverse sheaves on the semi-infinite flag manifold $G((t))/N((t))\cdot Tt$, and show that the subcategory of Iwahori-monodromy perverse sheaves is equivalent to the regular block of the category of representations of the small quantum group at an even root of unity.

Representations of algebraic groups over a 2-dimensional local field

We introduce a categorical framework for the study of representations of $G_F$, where $G$ is a reductive group, and $\bF$ is a 2-dimensional local field, i.e. $F=K((t))$, where $K$ is a local field. Our main result says that the space of functions on $G_F$, which is an object of a suitable category of representations of $G_F$ with the respect to the action of $G_F$ on itself by left translations, becomes a representation of a certain central extension of $G_F$, when we consider the action by right translations.

D-modules on the affine Grassmannian and representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras

Let ${\mathfrak g}$ be a simple Lie algebra. For a level $κ$ (thought of as a symmetric ${\mathfrak g}$-invariant form of ${\mathfrak g}$), let $\hat{\mathfrak g}_κ$ be the corresponding affine Kac-Moody algebra. Let $Gr_G$ be the affine Grassmannian of ${\mathfrak g}$, and let $D_κ(Gr_G)-mod$ be the category of $κ$-twisted right D-modules on $Gr_G$. By taking global sections of a D-module, we obtain a functor $Γ:D_κ(Gr_G)-mod\to {\mathfrak g}_κ-mod$. It is known that this functor is exact and faithful when $κ$ is negative or irrational. In this paper, we show that the functor $Γ$ is exact and faithful also when $κ$ is the critical level.

On a vanishing conjecture appearing in the geometric Langlands correspondence

Let $X$ be a smooth complete curve, and let $Bun_n$ be the moduli stack of rank $n$ vector bundles on $X$. Let $E$ be a local system on $X$. In a recent paper of E.Frenkel, K.Vilonen and the author, it was shown that the vanishing of a certian functor $Av_E^d$ acting from the category $D(Bun_n)$ to itself, implies the geometric Langlands conjecture. In this paper we establish the required vanishing result. Our proof works for sheaves with char=0 coefficients, or with torsion coefficients when the parameter $d$ is less than the characteristic.

Another realization of the category of modules over the small quantum group

Let $g$ be a semi-simple simply-connected Lie algebra and let $U_\ell$ be the corresponding quantum group with divided powers, where $\ell$ is an even order root of unity. Let in addition $u_\ell\subset U_\ell$ be the corresponding "small" quantum group. In this paper we establish the following relation between the categories of representations of $U_\ell$ and $u_\ell$: We show that the category of $u_\ell$-modules is naturally equivalent to the category of $U_\ell$-modules, which have a {\it Hecke eigen-property} with respect to representations lifted by means of the quantum Frobenius map $U_\ell\ti U(\check g)$, where $g$ is the Langlands dual Lie algebra. This description allows to express the regular linkage class in the category $u_\ell$-mod in terms of perverse sheaves on the affine flag variety with a Hecke eigen-property. Moreover, it can serve as a basis to the program to understand the connection between the category $u_\ell$-mod and the category of representations of the corresponding affine algebra at the critical level.

The gerbe of Higgs bundles

The purpose of this work is to describe the (category of) Higgs bundles on a complex scheme X having a given cameral cover X~. We show that this category is a T_{X~}-gerbe, where T_{X~} is a certain sheaf of abelian groups on X, and we describe the class of this gerbe precisely. In particular, it follows that the set of isomorphism classes of Higgs bundles with a fixed cameral cover X~ is a torsor over the group H^1(X, T_{X~}), which itself parametrizes T_{X~}-torsors on X. This underlying group can be described as a generalized Prym variety, whose connected component is either an abelian variety or a degeneration thereof.

On the geometric Langlands conjecture

Let X be a smooth, complete, geometrically connected curve over a field of characteristic p. The geometric Langlands conjecture states that to each irreducible rank n local system E on X one can attach a perverse sheaf on the moduli stack of rank n bundles on X (irreducible on each connected component), which is a Hecke eigensheaf with respect to E. In this paper we derive the geometric Langlands conjecture from a certain vanishing conjecture. Furthermore, using recent results of Lafforgue, we prove this vanishing conjecture, and hence the geometric Langlands conjecture, in the case when the ground field is finite.

Differential operators and the loop group via chiral algebras

Let $G$ be an algebraic group and let $\widetilde{\mathfrak g}$ be the corresponding affine algebra on some level. Consider the induced module $V:=Ind^{\widetilde{\mathfrak g}}_{{\mathfrak g}t(O_{Gt})$, where $O_{Gt}$ is the ring of regular functions on the group $Gt$. In this paper we show that $V$ is naturally a vertex operator algebra, which is "responsible" for D-modules on the loop group $G((t))$. Using the techiques of VOA we show that $V$ is in fact a bimodule over the affine algebra. In addition, we show that $V$ possesses a remarkable property related to its BRST reduction with respect to $\widetilde{\mathfrak g}$. This paper has a considerable intersection with a recent preprint of Gorbunov, Malikov and Schechtman.

Geometric Eisenstein series

The purpose of this of this paper is to develop the theory of Eisenstein series in the framework of geometric Langlands correspondence. Our construction is based on the study of certain relative compactification of the moduli stack of parabolic bundles on a curve suggested by V.Drinfeld. As an application we construct certain automorphic forms for global fields of positive characteristic, whose existence is non-obvious from the point of view of classical tools.

Whittaker Patterns in the Geometry of Moduli Spaces of Bundles on Curves

Let G be a split connected reductive group over a finite field F_q, and N its maximal unipotent subgroup. V. Drinfeld has introduced a remarkable partial compactification of the moduli stack of N-bundles on a smooth projective curve X over F_q. In this paper we study Drinfeld's moduli space and a certain category of perverse sheaves on it. The definition of this category is motivated by the study of the Whittaker functions on the group G(K), where K=F_q((t)). We prove that our category is semi-simple, and that irreducible objects of this category are "clean", i.e., they are extenstions by 0 of local systems supported on the strata. As an application of these results, we obtain a purely geometric proof of the Casselman-Shalika formula for the Whittaker functions.

On Ginzburg's Lagrangian construction of representations of GL(n)

In 1991 V. Ginzburg observed that one can realize irreducible representations of the group $GL(n,C)$ in the cohomology of certain Springer's fibers for the group GL(d) (for all natural d). However, Ginzburg's construction of the action of GL(n) on this cohomology was a bit artificial (he defined the action of Chevalley generators of the Lie algebra gl(n) on the corresponding cohomology by certain explicit correspondences, following the work of A. Beilinson, G. Lusztig and R. MacPherson, who gave a similar construction of the quantum group $U_q(gl(n))$). In this note we give a very simple geometric definition of the action of the whole group GL(n,C) on the above cohomology and simplify the Ginzburg's results.

Geometric Realization of Whittaker Functions and the Langlands Conjecture

We prove the equivalence of two conjectural constructions of unramified cuspidal automorphic functions on the adelic group GL_n(A) associated to an irreducible l-adic local system of rank n on an algebraic curve X over a finite field. The existence of such a function is predicted by the Langlands conjecture. The first construction, which was proposed by Shalika and Piatetski-Shapiro following Weil and Jacquet-Langlands (n=2), is based on considering the Whittaker function. The second construction, which was proposed recently by Laumon following Drinfeld (n=2) and Deligne (n=1), is geometric: the automorphic function is obtained via Grothendieck's ``faisceaux-fonctions correspondence from a complex of sheaves on an algebraic stack. Our proof of their equivalence is based on a local result about the spherical Hecke algebra, which we prove for an arbitrary reductive group. We also discuss a geometric interpretation of this result.

Operads, Grothendieck topologies and Deformation theory

The idea of the work is to find an invariant way to pass from deformation theory to cohomology, which does not use any explicit cocycles. The appropriate cohomology theory is based on considering sheaves on a certain site. An advantage of the approach is that it enables one to give a simultanious treatement to all types of algebras. As an application, we prove the PBW theorem in cases where it is not yet known.
